Six-Time James Beard Finalist, Cathy Whims, of Portland's Nostrana, on her new book.Welcome back to Pizza Quest! This week we welcome six-time James Beard Award finalist, Chef Cathy Whims, owner of Portland's beloved restaurant, Nostrana. which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. I first met Cathy when she was the chef and co-owner of Portland's celebrated fine dining Italian restaurant Genoa, where I enjoyed a memorable six-course tasting menu along with the famous bread book author, Carol Field (The Italian Baker). That was over 25 years ago. Genoa closed a few years later, and Nostrana emerged, but it's quite different from Genoa, serving wonderful rustic Italian food and Neapolitan pizzas to its large and loyal following. This month also marks the publication of Cathy's first book,The Italian Summer Kitchen, full of wonderful, easy-to-make recipes as well as the stories behind them.I felt like we were all so young when we first met (and Cathy is still far younger than I), but now it feels like we're like the surviving old timers. I remember reading the sobering news when Carol Field passed away eight years ago -- she was an esteemed mentor to many of us, and now we've inherited that same mentorship mantle for the next generation, which is why Cathy's new book is so important. We'll hear all about her long journey from Chapel Hill, NC on her way to becoming hailed, as one writer called her, the unofficial Doyenne of Italian cooking for the Pacific Northwest. It's all here in this week's edition of Pizza Quest.

Bunny chats to Nina Campbell in her London Garden. Nina is the Doyenne of Interiors and is an internationally renown Interior Designer. Nina won the American Fashion award for ‘the Women who has most influenced style Internationally' and works for many celebs such as Ringo Star and the royals. Nina is Godmother to Geri Halliwell's daughter. She was born on the day after World War II ended. Nina talks about her life and how she got into interior design. Nina she still enjoys running her business despite being 79 years old . Her wide business interests include having a shop and designing fabric collections. Nina has no intention of having an exit strategy, but enjoys working with young designers and creating new ranges for a wide range of price points. Nina talks about her design strategies and how she plays with scale and colour. In her tiny London garden she has played with paving sizes to create false perspective, has used mirrors and narrow but high containers to make the space look bigger but also softer. The palette of plants, the louvred fencing and the furniture are chosen with great attention to detail and together create stunning relaxing spaces from what was a narrow, dusty, roadside strip with no privacy from the public. For Nina's present, Bunny takes Nina a plant, Dianthus barbatus ‘Sooty' , a short lived perennial with beautifully deep maroon flower heads that last for months. It also has an exceptionally long vase life. This plant self seeds (and is true from seed) so although technically a short lived perennial, in affect it rarely needs replacing. In 1929, Bernardine Szold Fritz left Paris on a train bound for China. She was on her way to her fourth wedding, and her fourth husband: An American investment banker named Chester Fritz, who'd proposed after a whirlwind meeting earlier in Shanghai. Bernardine is then forced to find herself things to do in interwar China–and her husband isn't helping much. That's how Susan Blumberg-Kason's newest book, Bernardine's Shanghai Salon: The Story of the Doyenne of Old China (Post Hill Press: 2023), starts. The book charts Bernardine's life as she sets up a theater, and makes friends with such illustrious figures like Lin Yutang, Victor Sasoon and Anna May Wong. In this interview, Susan and I talk about Bernardine, her life, and why interwar Shanghai remains such a compelling setting for fiction and nonfiction writers. Susan Blumberg-Kason is also the author of a memoir, Good Chinese Wife: A Love Affair with China Gone Wrong. She is also the co-editor of Hong Kong Noir . Susan is a regular contributor to the Asian Review of Books, Cha: An Asian Literary Review and World Literature Today. Her work has also appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books, PopMatters, and the South China Morning Post. Margaret Atwood is best known for her mega-bestselling dystopian fiction, including the Booker Prize-winning novels “The Blind Assassin” and “The Testaments”, “The Handmaid's Tale,” and, most recently, the essay collection “Burning Questions”. The Canadian firebrand imagines future societies, specifically the worst scenarios in these future societies, worlds of genetic modification, pharmaceutical and corporate control, human-made disasters and theocracies where women's bodies are controlled by capitalist overlords. And this is the thing – her dark fantasies have a horrifying habit of coming true, Exhibit A: “The Handmaid's Tale”, a portent for the new abortion laws in the US, the erosion of American democracy, even the January 6 insurrection. However, at age 83 Margaret, dubbed “the prophet of dystopia”, is turning her vibrancy and wild care to creating… utopias. Or rather, she is trying to find a way to save the world via an online program where participants work with experts to develop solutions to all the wicked problems we've created. Today we discuss how the subordination of women and theocracies follow particular economic cycles, why she's not quitting Twitter (yet) and what hope will need to look like. We mention Rebecca Solnit's book Hope in the Dark and Paul Hawken's book Drawdown, as well as Martha Gellhorn: A LifeFollow Margaret on SubstackCheck out Practical Utopias here Hosted on Acast.
