Mike Ferguson in the Morning 02-09-24 Illinois State Rep. Brad Halbrook, who is part of the IL Freedom Caucus, talks about the illegal alien crisis in the state, especially in the Chicagoland area. He also discusses the proposed Democratic "traffic stop" bill that would limit the ability of the police to make proper traffic stops and would cause safety issues. House Bill 4603 would change the motor vehicle code to prohibit police stops for minor offenses like failing to display license plates or expired stickers, excessively tinted windows, defective mirrors, defective bumpers or excessive exhaust. The most controversial part of the bill involves stops for speeding that would not result in misdemeanors or felonies. In Illinois, that means speeding 25-35 miles an hour over the speed limit. He also talks about his proposal for an annual Religious Freedom Day and other legislative issues. On February 2, we'll see the 71st installment of an event that always raises eyebrows and makes news. The National Prayer Breakfast has been around since 1953, but what is it? Does it promote religious freedom, or is it yet another example of Christian nationalism? Amanda and Holly explore the legitimate questions it raises about faith in public life and the relationship between the institutions of government and religion. They also share their thoughts on what we should do about the National Prayer Breakfast and the key differences between it and the National Day of Prayer.   SHOW NOTES Segment 1 (starting at 00:47): Exploring the National Prayer Breakfast from various angles  You can email Amanda and Holly at RespectingReligion@BJConline.org Respecting Religion is made possible by BJC's generous donors. You can support these conversations with a gift to BJC. Listen to Amanda and Holly's conversation on the National Prayer Breakfast during the very first episode of Respecting Religion in February 2020 at this link. Their discussion of the event begins at 28:44 into the episode. Amanda and Holly mentioned this op-ed in The Washington Post by Albert Brooks, who was the keynote speaker at the 2020 National Prayer Breakfast: Trump and I disagreed at the National Prayer Breakfast. But we listened to each other Throughout its history, the National Prayer Breakfast has been hosted by The Fellowship Foundation, also known as “The Family.” You can visit their website at this link.  As mentioned, this year a newly-created nonprofit will be the official host of the National Prayer Breakfast. “The Family” will host a large event at the same time that includes a livestream. Read more in this Religion News Service article by Adelle Banks and Jack Jenkins: National Prayer Breakfast breaks from ‘The Family' with new organization Amanda and Holly mentioned this 2022 article by Jack Jenkins for Religion News Service: Sen. Chris Coons: This year's National Prayer Breakfast is a ‘reset'   Segment 2 (starting at 25:21): History, controversies, and the proper relationship between religion and government Amanda and Holly discussed the Johnson Amendment in season 2, episode 4: Grading the Trump administration on religious freedom (starting around 09:50 in that episode). You can also read more about BJC's work defending the protections of the Johnson Amendment  Journalist Jeff Sharlet wrote a book titled “The Family” in 2009 about the Fellowship Foundation, including the National Prayer Breakfast. In August 2019, Netflix released a 5-episode series called “The Family.” You can read John Fea's review of the Netflix series that ran in The Washington Post.    Segment 3 (starting at 32:12): What's the difference between the National Prayer Breakfast and the National Day of Prayer? It's Tuesday, January 17th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Biden's proclamation on Religious Freedom Day On Monday, President Joe Biden issued a Proclamation on Religious Freedom Day, 2023.  He took the opportunity to announce his appointment of Rashad Hussain, a Muslim, as Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom. Although the president mentioned the Rohingya people and the Ahmadiyya Muslim in his proclamation, recent news coverage has only mentioned the killing of nine Muslims at the hands of other Muslims in Burkina Faso, Africa. Radical Muslims kill 99% of martyrs Meanwhile, confirmed Christian martyrdoms came out to 5,898 in the last annual count according to the Open Doors 2022 report. And 99% of the martyrdoms occurred at the hands of radical Muslims, to include 4,650 in Nigeria, Africa, 620 in Pakistan, 100 in Burkina Faso, Africa, 100 in the Congo, Africa, 100 in Mozambique, Africa, 27 in Cameroon, Africa, 25 in Tanzania, Africa, and 15 in Indonesia. Gunman attacked mourners in London, injuring little girl A gunman attacked a Roman Catholic Church in London  over the weekend, leaving six wounded — including a 7-year-old girl fighting for her life, reports The Christian Post. The shooting occurred during a memorial service at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic church.  United Kingdom failed to solve over a million crimes The Epoch Times reports that the United Kingdom failed to solve over 1,100,000 crimes last year. The proportion of crimes in England and Wales ending with a charge was down to 5.6% in 2022, decreasing from a rate of 15 percent seven years ago. That's an over-all drop off of 65% in crime prosecution over seven years.   Two million criminal investigations in the last year led to no suspect being identified, a number including 300,000 violent crimes.  The Crime Survey for England and Wales estimated that 1.6% of adults, aged 16 years and older, were a victim of violent crime in the year ending March 2020. As of 2021, there were only 156,000 firearms certificates on issue in the UK. That's 0.2% of the population. One must have this certificate to possess firearms and ammunition.  That compares to 45% of U.S. households that own guns.  Romans 13:3-4 says, “Rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. For he is God's minister to you for good, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.” Shocking impact of inflation on savings How is inflation impacting Certificates of Deposit or savings accounts for retirees and other conservative savers in America? The average annual savings loss after inflation, over 12 years, for a three-month CD, stands at negative 2.26%. That means a retiree with $100,000 in savings would have lost $23,000 in value over the last 12 years. Over the same period of time, the Federal Reserve assets increased from $1 trillion to about $9 trillion.  Florida opposes the abortion “Kill Pill” Florida is taking a position against the recent FDA decision to allow local pharmacies to dispense the abortion “Kill Pill.”   Florida's Agency for Healthcare Administration issued a letter last week informing pharmacy chains, like Walgreens and CVS, the illegality of the sale of Mifepristone within the state. Oddly enough, in light of the state's stand against the Kill Pill, Florida allows the surgical killing of babies up until 15 weeks of gestation.  Christian colleges allowed to uphold God's sexual standards Good news here! A U.S. district judge has ruled in favor of Christian colleges which claim exemption on Title IX requirements on non-discrimination in the case of those who advocate sexual attraction to the same sex, reports Reuters.   The lawsuit came from disenfranchised students who were expelled or disciplined by Christian college campuses for their embracing of homosexuality.  The complainants were affiliated with Baylor University, Bob Jones University, Dordt College, and Union College. The lawsuit was aided by an organization called Religious Exemption Accountability Project.  Proverbs 21:1 reminds us that “The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.” John MacArthur had surgery to clear artery blockage And finally, Pastor John MacArthur is on rest recovery for a few weeks after undergoing a medical procedure to clear blockage in his arteries. The pastor fell ill on January 1st, and was unable to lead the second service. Please pray for Pastor MacArthur's complete recovery. Perhaps you and your kids can create and sign a get well card. Send it to Pastor John MacArthur, Grace Community Church, 13248 Roscoe Blvd., Sun Valley, CA 91352. They talk about decisions we're waiting for, cases the Court might still take, and cases the Court declined to hear. In segment three, Amanda and Holly discuss the recent hostage crisis at a Jewish synagogue in Texas that happened the day before Religious Freedom Day, highlighting the chasm between the promise and reality of religious freedom today.    SHOW NOTES: Segment one: Changes coming to the Court and a review of the Shurtleff v. Bremerton: Court will take up five new cases, including lawsuit from football coach who wanted to pray on the field You can also read about Kennedy v. Bremerton in this post on our website: Supreme Court to hear case involving high school football coach's post-game prayer on the field   Segment three: Respecting religious freedom for all, in the face of constant threats (starting at 33:22) You can read the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, signed January 16, 1786, at this link. Read President Joe Biden's proclamation for Religious Freedom Day at this link. On Religious Freedom Day 2022, Amanda Tweeted this: Today as we observe Religious Freedom Day, we are mindful of the ongoing threats to houses of worship across this country. We should be free to worship in synagogues, mosques, temples, meeting houses and churches without fear of violence and attack.I'm holding the people of Congregation Beth Israel in my heart as they heal from yesterday's attack, with a grateful heart that the hostages are safe. In solidarity with Jewish communities who live with these ongoing threats. We won't rest until there is faith freedom for all. BJC Board Member Sofi Hersher Tweeted this after news broke about hostages taken at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas, on January 15, 2022: Resist anyone and anything that seeks to position the hostage situation at Congregation Beth Israel as Jews vs. Muslims.  That kind of reductionist thinking is lazy, untrue, and helps no one. It protects the civil rights of people to express their religious beliefs without suffering discrimination. The U.S. Department of Education has issued guidelines explaining students’ religious liberties. The main message students need to hear is that they shouldn't feel like they have to be “undercover” about their religion – that somehow, they have to keep quiet about their family's beliefs.

Whether it is in word or deed, senior members of President Trump’s administration are proving to be strong advocates of the importance of religious liberty. Learn more at FirstLiberty.org/Briefing. Two public appearances by senior members of the Trump Administration show the Administration’s fundamental commitment to religious liberty.  And it’s more than just words. In answer to a question from a reporter, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pointed out the administration’s foreign policy when it comes to religious freedom.  He said, “Because it’s at the heart of all the freedoms that every individual should have, right?” Former Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker spoke at length about the importance of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act at the Heritage Foundation on Religious Freedom Day.  He explained, “RFRA promotes authentic tolerance—because RFRA makes a solemn promise to the people of this nation that we can find a place for them, regardless of who they are, and regardless of their beliefs.” Both of these agencies have backed those words up with action.  The Trump State Department hosted a “Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom” in 2018 and plans are underway for another in 2019.  The DOJ has issued guidance on religious liberty to all executive agencies, launched its “place to worship” initiative that protects houses of worship, and been active in litigating violations of religious liberty. Whether it involves matters of foreign policy or domestic relations, it is good to see an executive branch committed to defending religious liberty in both word and deed. It's another busy day in Trump's Amerikka. Before we get there, we turn our attention to the UK, where yesterday's Brexit vote was a disaster for PM Theresa May. UK Progressive's Denis Campbell joins in with an update. Then, today is Religious Freedom Day, but it's nothing like the name implies. Journalist and author Frederick Clarkson has been warning us about this for years, and joins us today to explain what's so dangerous about the "Christian" legislation these groups are pushing.

[Illustration from http://www.politico.com/story/2013/05/virginia-gay-rights-terry-mcauliffe-ew-jackson-91763.html] President Obama mentions "atheists and agnostics" in his annual Religious Freedom Day proclamation and there's hardly a peep from the conservative blogosphere. In year's past Obama has made occasional mention of "non-believers" so I guess an explicit mention is a step up. On the down side, the President is still schedule to attend the National Prayer Breakfast, sponsored by the secretive conservative religious organization The Family. On the gay rights front: Amazing what a few weeks can do. On New Year's Eve Virginia had a Republican Governor, Lt Governor and Attorney General. Now they've been replaced by Democrats. Virginia's newly-elected AG Mark Herring has said he won't defend the commonwealth's constitutional ban on same-sex marriages. Meanwhile, in Maryland, a mother is in jail, accused of murdering two of her children as part of an alleged exorcism. Tragic things can happen when mental illness and religion collide.

Another Tuesday night and I have two heavy hitters on the Tami Jackson Show*! In the first 1/2 hour I will be speaking with frequent guest, Rich Botkin. Rich, a retired Marine officer, served four years active, eleven in the reserves. Botkin is the author of Ride the Thunder: A Vietnam War Story of Honor and Triumph, a magnificent work of military history centered on the Easter offensive and the American and Vietnamese Marines. The tome highlights many brave men, including: Col G.H. “Gerry” Turley, Col John Ripley (“Skipper”), and Maj Le Ba Binh, who fought in a war demonized and undermined by the Mainstream Media and The Left. Ride the Thunder tells the story of American Marines, Covan, and the TQLC, a story not well-known by so many Americans, and made the USMC Commandant's Reading List (required reading for Marines). The 603 page book offers a sweeping view of the conditions throughout Indo-China prior to the Vietnam war, including the war between the Viet Minh and French forces, the Geneva Agreements begun in May 1954, the apportionment of the north as the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (Communist), the south as the Republic of Vietnam (non-communist). When people such as Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland spoke of Vietnam and the war, they never mentioned the bloody Communist purges between 1953 and 1956. Botkin's book recounts the history through the eyes of the American and South Vietnamese Marines and their wives, personalizing a much misunderstood conflict. Richard writes on page 17: No accurate details exist for the number of people disposed of during this period, nor was there a record of those eliminated during their attempts to leave or intimidated from moving to the south. As there was little in the way of press coverage, news of massive purges were only gathered by word of mouth when it reached the south and given scant attention in Western media. Ride the Thunder is the result of 5 years of writing and 4 trips to Vietnam, and was made into a motion picture in March of 2015. You can follow the movie progress at RideTheThunderMovie.com. Rich wrote an article in October 2017 titled, Will Ken Burns' Twisted Version of Vietnam War Endure? The article begins: “No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now.” Richard Nixon's 1994 post-war observation remains as prescient as ever. With the release of the Ken Burns/Lynne Novick epic 10-part PBS documentary on the war last month, it is safe to say that the misreporting and misremembering have only been compounded and exacerbated. Sadly, the American taxpayers have funded the Burns/Novick series which only continues The Left's distorted narrative of the Vietnam War. Click the picture to go to the Amazon video page! Botkin writes in his article: If nothing else, the release of the Burns/Novick work has ignited a firestorm of passionate response from those men who honorably served. And it was their stories, including those of our South Vietnamese allies, that went largely untold in 18 long, tortuous hours. Ride the Thunder movie is NOW available on Amazon video: the HD digital movie is free to Amazon Prime members (or can be rented or purchased by those who are not Prime members). In addition, Ride the Thunder movie DVDs can be purchased at Amazon. Our hope is that perhaps a backlash will occur, that thousands will obtain copies of the Ride the Thunder movie, and that the light of truth will reveal the Burns series to be a terrible misrepresentation of the war and those who honorably served. ******************* In the second 1/2 hour I will be talking to Michael Farris. Michael P. Farris is President, CEO, and General Counsel of Alliance Defending Freedom. In January 2017, he became only the second person to occupy that position in the organization's 23-year history. He brings to the role a remarkably diverse background as an effective litigator, educator, public advocate, pastor, and communicator, and wide recognition for his successful work on both the national and international stage. Farris was founding president of both the Home School Legal Defense Association (1983) and Patrick Henry College (2000) and continues to serve as chairman of the board of HSLDA and chancellor emeritus of PHC. He graduated from Western Washington State College, magna cum laude, with a bachelor's degree in Political Science, followed by a Juris Doctor from Gonzaga University (with honors). At Gonzaga, he was articles editor of the Law Review and winner of the Linden Cup Moot Court Competition. He also earned an LL.M. in Public International Law (with honors) from the University of London. Farris has specialized in constitutional appellate litigation. In that capacity, he has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, eight federal circuit courts of appeals, and in the appellate courts of 13 states. He is also the author of numerous amicus briefs before the U.S. Supreme Court. Farris also has substantial experience in international human rights advocacy. He served for nearly a decade on the board of Christian Solidarity International—a Swiss-based human rights organization. He served as International Vice President of CSI for a number of years and participated in missions to the former Soviet Union and Romania. He has also engaged in private diplomatic missions to China and the Czech Republic. Farris is nationally known as a pioneering leader of the modern homeschooling movement. His leadership of HSLDA has taken him to nearly every state and a growing number of other nations. As the founding president of Patrick Henry College, he helped launch a highly regarded Christian educational institution founded on a strong commitment to biblical truth and the classical liberal arts, the twin pillars of education for the founding generations of the United States. At PHC, Farris has taught constitutional law, public international law, and coached the Moot Court team to nine national championships between 2004 and 2016. Farris is the author of over 15 books, as well as law review and other scholarly articles, and countless pieces for the popular press. Michael and his wife, Vickie, have 10 children and 20 grandchildren. Listen in as Michael and I discuss the victory of the Trinity Lutheran Church v. Comer SCOTUS ruling: the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 in favor of ADF's client Trinity. Mike and I will talk about the repercussions of the ruling on, Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, and about President Trump's proclamation recognizing Jan. 16 as Religious Freedom Day. Farris commented: Americans have always treasured their ability to freely live out their faith. The president's proclamation of Religious Freedom Day today comes at a time when that freedom has perhaps never been more threatened, so we join him in encouraging all Americans to consider the importance of religious freedom—and to celebrate it. As the president's proclamation says, ‘No American—whether a nun, nurse, baker, or business owner—should be forced to choose between the tenets of faith or adherence to the law.' That's precisely why we recently argued on behalf of cake artist Jack Phillips before the U.S. Supreme Court. Americans should be able to peacefully live and work according to their beliefs without fear of punishment by the government.
