In a special episode of What Next?, best-selling author of Can't Sell, Won't Sell: Advertising, Politics and Culture Wars, Steve Harrison returns to discuss his new book which is about an unsung hero in the history of advertising: Howard Gossage. As you'll discover, Gossage got to “interactive advertising” in 1964. Back then, he was also pioneering the publicity and unpaid media-generating stunts that dominate our award shows today. But Steve says his hero's biggest lesson for us is this: if you want to attract, involve and engage your audience you must realise you are in showbusiness. After a decade dedicated to soulless data and po-faced purpose, Gossage teaches us that advertising works best when it is entertaining. And, as Steve suggests, in him you have an entertainer who wrote the most imaginative, irreverent, funny - and effective ads you'll ever see. This week we sent off a coupon to catch 1960s advertising copywriter, Howard Gossage, through the eyes and work of Steve Harrison and Dave Dye. As a copywriter, Steve tamed more Cannes Lions in his discipline than anyone else in the world. He's been on the show twice before, once guesting, once hosting, and is a great friend of …Gasp!. Dave is the true “art director's art director”. Through his career he's won everything, worked for the best agencies in the business, and the visual techniques he uses to squeeze every ounce of juice from an idea are frankly unparalleled.  The pair have joined forces to pen and produce ‘The Howard Gossage Show', a fitting celebration of the fun and fame peddling ad man; one of the industry's lesser known greats. We gossip on Gossage's showmanship, breaking conventions, having half an interesting conversation through his ads, writing to somebody, stunts, fame, and so much more. At a time when advertising is disliked and avoided by most people, his legacy feels even more important now than it was 60 years ago. Howard Gossage - often dubbed the "Socrates of San Francisco," revolutionised advertising in the 1950s and 60s with his unconventional and humanistic approach. So it took two equally unconventional and humanistic creatives - Steve Harrsion and Dave Dye, to write - no, craft - a book documenting some of the most captivating and exemplary pieces of Gossage's short but prolific career, producing a form of advertising so ahead of its time that we're only now catching up with it. The problem is, that, like the man in the river surrounded by crocodiles, we've forgotten that the original objective was to get to the other side. We've forgotten the point of advertising - and that is to entertain. Gossage was a born showman and it lived and breathed in his work, which is what makes it sadly unique. If you've never been Gossaged before, I suggest you start here. If you have, then I hope you'll appreciate this podcast and an opportunity to reminisce on a lost period of advertising that we still have a chance to reclaim and make advertising great again. Thank you to Steve Harrison and Dave Dye for a memorable podcast. If it sounds a bit jumpy, I apologise and hope that it doesn't spoil your listening enjoyment. In this episode of PhotoWork with Sasha Wolf, Sasha is joined by photographer John Gossage to discuss John's long and storied life in photography. John talks at length about his encounters, both positive and negative, with some of photography's towering historical figures from Lisette Model to Edward Steichen. John discusses the origins of his renowned work, The Pond, and how getting the book published was a real challenge. http://stephendaitergallery.com/artists/john-gossage/ John Gossage (1946- ) born in Staten Island, New York is an artist who has, more than most contemporary photographers, become noted for his intellectually engaging, subversive and well-crafted artist books and other publications. In them the artist utilizes under-recognized elements of the urban environment: unused and abandoned patches of land; refuse and detritus; barbed wire; graffiti and the like, to explore themes as disparate as surveillance, memory and the relationship between architecture and power. “ Gossage is always about the luxuriance of what goes unnoticed, what goes unseen until his pictures call your attention to it,” wrote Gus Blaisdell in The Romance Industry, ( Nazraeli Press, 2001). Gossage photographs that which has just occurred, from markings on a wall to a table after a meal, to remind us that we may have already forgotten it happened or that we were there. By asking us look at what we have misplaced or abandoned he brings us face to face with the present as it becomes history. Throughout the 1980s Berlin became Gossage's overriding focus. Berlin, with its Wall, and unwanted histories – both forgotten and remembered – became the place where Gossage first explored the ideas that have come to symbolize his very personalized style of photographic storytelling. BERLIN IN THE TIME OF THE WALL was published by Loosestrife Editions in 2004.In 2010, Aperture re-issued and updated The Pond, a groundbreaking visual meditation on Thoreau's stay at Walden Pond. This week, we pushed a creative fledgling out of the agency nest to lure and catch author of ad land's how-to guide, Junior, to teach them to fly. Long overdue, it's Thomas Kemeny.  Junior is a book that should be instantly useful for people starting out. Unlike most marketing books, Thomas packs it with proper, practical advice on navigating hallways, not ballsing up presentations, and the virtue of pushing in your chair after meetings. Thomas chirps to us on tonnes of topics, including his first job taking a crowbar to beautiful furniture, what might've been if he'd never read Hey Whipple, writing the book he wished existed, bus stops that smell like cookies, writing 100 terrible lines to get to a great one, AI, what to do with a dud brief, his arch rival Andrew Boulton, the Tom he'd float with in a barrel down a river, and a whole lot more. Brian Cobb, Creative Director at Opengear, shares his thoughts on how AI tools can streamline the creative process. We go beyond the social media “sound bites” about the evils of  ChatGPT and DALL-E (!) to talk about real world applications in marketing design. What are some ways that AI can be integrated into existing tools and processes that Creatives and Designers currently use? [04:45] How can we tap into the power of AI to optimize the higher-level thinking, and automate some of the repetitive tasks to free up more time for creativity? What does this mean for the concept of an Organizing Idea? [10:12]It looks as though Adobe are taking a thoughtful approach, releasing a beta version of Firefly and incorporating AI tools into the Cloud Experience Suite. They focus on “Creators First” – offering their tools as a “Creative Copilot” – and are being careful to consider copyright issues, and respecting their core audience of professional designers and creators. [15:18]Brian's varied career has taken him through a number of agency roles, and in-house or corporate marketing roles. He compares the skill sets and mindset needed for each, and talks about the constant need to be “selling” during the agency creative process. [23:52]And of course, Brian shares his favorite cocktail: a Dark and Stormy made the traditional way. Do you know July of each year is Disability pride month? 32 years ago, on July 26th, the Americans With Disability Act was signed into law, and since then, discrimination against people with disability was prohibited, and more and more people with disability find advocacy and support from society. To celebrate this important month in the history of disabled rights, we are honored to have a very special guest with us today, Mr. Gossage, the director of the Ann Arbor center for independent living. Mr. Gossage will share with us… the history of the independent living movement, its driving philosophy, and what it takes for people with disabilities to be independent. If you are interested in the independent living movement and want to know more about this history, Mr. Gossage recommended a documentary: CRIP CAMP: A DISABILITY REVOLUTION, that he thought would be a good introduction to this topic. We would love to extend our gratitude to the Fifth Avenue Studios in Ann Arbor Public Library, who helped us connect with Mr. Gossage and many wonderful guest interviewees in future episodes.
