Everton is one of the grand old names of English football. Founder members of both the Football League (1888) and the Premier League (1992), Everton have the second-longest run in the top-flight of English football after Arsenal, with seven decades without a relegation - although they have come close.  I discuss Everton's history with author Rob Sawyer and the club's legacy in South America with Jimmy Milner from The Ruleteros Society, focussing on the friendship between Everton in England and their namesake in Chile, Everton de Viña del Mar.

They chatted about his latest book, Broken Dreams: Everton, the War and Goodison's Lost Generation about the 1938/39 championship winning side which was denied the chance to defend its title and perhaps build a period of lasting success by the outbreak of the Second World WarRob described his long-standing family ties with Everton Football Club, how he got into writing about the Toffees with his first book on Harry Catterick in 2015 and what drew him to focus the late 1930s team. And, of course, they talked about the modern day Blues, where the team goes from here after the last few tumultuous years and the looming departure from Goodison Park at the end of the coming season. We admit that when our friends at Liverpool's deCoubertin Books reached out recently with an advance look at their upcoming title devoted to the history of one of England's most venerable top-flight soccer clubs, we weren't immediately sold on the premise, nor its applicability to our (admittedly) odd brand of sports curiosity. But after just a few minutes with the meticulously detailed "Toffee Soccer: Everton and North America," we became not only intrigued by the rich, storied saga of Everton F.C.'s 143-year journey into what is now known as the English Premier League - but downright fascinated with its surprising contributions to the development of the game in North America. Toffee co-authors David France and Rob Sawyer join the podcast this week to shine light on the little-known, but undeniable connection between the "Blues" and the rise of the modern-day pro game in the US & Canada. From the club's unexpected 1961 runner-up finish in the influential International Soccer League, to its subsequent supply of dozens of top players to the foundational North American Soccer League of the 70s/80s, to its recent embrace of world-class American players like Landon Donovan and Tim Howard - the "People's Club" has been an unwittingly integral part of soccer's Stateside history - far beyond Goodison Park.

Thinking Texas during the mid- to late-1800s more likely conjures images of tough cowboys, fierce comanches, and dusty cattle drives than epic turn-of-the-century waterfowl hunting. Today's guest forever changes that. Rob Sawyer has authored 3 incredible books on the Lone Star State's colorful waterfowling history. Even in the halcyon days of waterfowling, sport hunters began emerging as conservationists.  Saying "everything's bigger in Texas," Sawyer describes events that are truly hard to fathom by today's standard. What were the Canvasback Wars?  Prize hunts? Ox hunts? What other migratory bird species were hunted for food and sport? What attracted so many sharks along Matagorda Island? What Texas town began when an out-of-state visitor shot 1000 ducks? When did snow geese begin using the Texas prairie? Many Texas listeners asked us to feature Rob Sawyer and for excellent reason. Sawyer's anecdotes range from humorous to jaw dropping, all so extremely interesting that you'll not want the episode to end.
