And how much will the No. 10 Bulldogs need that confidence this week vs. No. 1 Stamford? Our other 2A team still alive is Bremond, which actually finished out of the top 10 in the final regular season poll. Clare Sealy currently works as the Head of Education Improvement for the states of Guernsey. Prior to this, she was the Headteacher of St Matthias Primary School in Tower Hamlets for 22 years. In 2018, the Times Education Supplement named her as one of the 10 most influential people in the world of education. In 2022, Clare was awarded an OBE for services to education. Oracy – in case you're unfamiliar with the term – was coined in 1965 to put spoken language firmly on the map, giving it equal status to written literacy and numeracy. Fast forward nearly 60 years, and we're still having this conversation. Just last month, the Oracy Education Commission published a report suggesting that oracy should be recognised as the ‘fourth R' – alongside reading, writing, and arithmetic. It's a sentiment I wholeheartedly support. These days, oracy is often thought of as having three dimensions: learning to talk, learning through talk, and learning about talk. If that idea intrigues you, the Oracy Cambridge website is full of thought-provoking blogs. Recently, the Oracy Cambridge team published a collective response to the Oracy Education Commission's report, offering this updated definition: ‘Oracy is the ability to use the skills of speaking, listening, and non-verbal communication for a wide range of purposes.' Oracy is very much in the spotlight at the moment, especially here in the UK. The Labour government has repeatedly signalled a renewed emphasis on spoken language and communication skills, and we're already seeing this shift in schools and classrooms. I think it's an incredibly welcome change – though, as with any policy, not everyone agrees. Clare and I get into some of these differing perspectives in this episode. Clare and I also discuss a fascinating blog she wrote, titled ‘Talking floats on a sea of write' – a clever inversion of James Britton's famous statement that ‘writing floats on a sea of talk'. I found her ideas so compelling that I asked her to join me for this conversation – and, well, here we are! The injuries were extensive and resulted in a partial arm amputation. Artemis Live - Insurance-linked securities (ILS), catastrophe bonds (cat bonds), reinsurance
There are an increasing number of insurance-linked securities (ILS) and collateralized reinsurance formations in Bermuda that have a focus on areas of the property and casualty (P&C) market outside of natural catastrophe risks, Damian Sealy of PwC Bermuda explained in a recent interview. Our latest Artemis Live interview is with Damian Sealy, a Director and the Actuarial Leader for Bermuda and PwC in the Caribbean. Sealy leads the delivery of actuarial services for PwC Bermuda and the Caribbean's audit and advisory engagements. During his 18 year actuarial career he has worked with most insurance entities, from captives, to large global property and catastrophe reinsurers, as well as collateralized reinsurance and ILS structures in Bermuda. During our interview, Sealy pointed to the health of the ILS market and expanding use of alternative capital sources in lines of insurance business outside of the more typical property cat. He explained that the ILS and collateralized reinsurance market is "actively growing" and that this is leading to an increasing number of engagements for actuarial work related to newly established structures. "For my team specifically, we're certainly seeing an increase in the number of new formations requesting our actuarial support, whether that's directly providing advisory support, where we are independent of the new vehicle, or as the actuarial team member within the overall audit team," Sealy said during the interview. Going on to say that, "What I've seen recently are a number of structures, collateralized insurers and reinsurers, sidecars, where the underlying coverage relates to casualty business, and some also providing coverage across the market, in property cat, casualty, specialty. "We, of course, focus our assistance in helping clients, or in the case of audit where the audit team is essentially my client, we're trying to help them to understand the sensitivity and the variability of that result." Asked whether he believes casualty ILS and other P&C lines are a growth area, Sealy said, "I certainly do, especially as the industry and as the market, with the support of actuaries, continue to explore the impact that tail-risk and that longer-term variability can have, it can be positive, if understood. "So I do think that this is a particular growth area, and I'm glad to see the market giving it consideration and expanding the support that it can lend to the industry." The recently held earnings call for Tempur Sealy International, Inc. shed light on the company's performance in an unpredictable market. CEO Scott Thompson encapsulated the current market conditions quite accurately - without overselling the situation, he pointed out that the signals are mixed, but the company is managing to hold its steady course. How Tempur Sealy has managed to stay atop these waves of uncertainty is primarily due to its intentional focus on launching new products and expanding its production capabilities. This strategy has helped the company maintain a distinct edge over its competition by capturing a larger share of the market and propelling growth in sales. Some of the products that have kept Tempur Sealy in the forefront include timber mattresses, TEMPUR-breeze, and the Stearns & Foster portfolios. Another important part of Tempur Sealy's success lies in its strategic diversity and growth investments. By expanding its collection of products and launching innovative solutions, the company has been able to create mass appeal among a variety of consumers, paving the way for an increase in sales. One more contributory factor to Tempur Sealy's growth is its hefty investment in direct-to-consumer channels, along with its strong online presence. In an era where online shopping is the norm, the company's emphasis on e-commerce has helped to significantly expand its target audience, thereby boosting sales. Tempur Sealy appears to have a clear vision moving forward. Its plans include decreasing its financial leverage while finalizing the acquisition of Mattress Firm, aiming to fortify its standing in the market even more. What's more, there's anticipation around the introduction of the next-generation Adapt products in 2024, a clear indicator of the company's dedication to staying ahead through innovation. In conclusion, it's clear to see that the financial strongholds of Tempur Sealy can be traced back to its tactical focus on new product launches, diversification, and expansion of its manufacturing capacities. Moreover, the company's unwavering investments in growth initiatives have continuously stamped its authority as a global leader in the bedding industry, able to navigate through and adapt to the ever-changing market trends. In this episode I speak with Set Decorator, Larry Dias and Production Designer, Paul Austerberry. They talk about the intricate process of creating the musical film version of the beloved book “The Color Purple”. From selecting locations in Georgia and building sets in a swamp and a waterfall to antiquing and creating his own prop house of period dressing. We also discuss not just the color purple but the significance of color and palette, specifically the use of the color red as a symbol of Shug's passion and its impact on Sealy's perspective. This film dives deeper into some of the other minor characters which gives the opportunity to see one of my favorite sets of the film, Shug's house. Loved hearing their creative process and how that brought the film to the screen. Are you a fan of TV and film production?
