Le jury ayant démissionné la veille de l'ouverture, refusant d'évaluer les artistes de pays accusés de crimes de guerre, soit Israël et la Russie. Cette année, 111 artistes sont réunis dans l'exposition centrale autour de laquelle se déploient une centaine de pavillons nationaux. Le Sénégal en fait partie. Il a pris place dans un palais vénitien, le Palazzo Navaggero, le long du Grand Canal, non loin des Giardini, le cœur battant de la Biennale. La cinquième édition du Salon du livre africain de Paris s'ouvre à Paris samedi 21 mars. 150 éditeurs et 400 auteurs africains et afro-descendants seront présents pour défendre une littérature et un écosystème littéraire en pleine croissance. Souleymane Gueye, éditeur jeunesse sénégalais, fondateur des éditions Saaraba, est le grand invité Afrique de RFI. RFI : On s'aperçoit que les gens lisent de moins en moins en France. Aux États-Unis, seuls 40 % des Américains lisent un livre chaque année. Est-ce le cas au Sénégal ? Constatez-vous de la part des Sénégalais un engouement pour la lecture ? Souleymane Gueye : Le Sénégal n'échappe malheureusement pas à ce phénomène qui est mondial, avec l'attractivité des écrans. Ce combat se traduit chez nous par la volonté de réussir à produire de la qualité et à organiser des activités autour du livre pour maintenir les gens attachés au format papier. Mais nous avons ces mêmes difficultés. Surtout dans un pays où la lecture a souvent été associée à la contrainte et à l'obligation de la lecture scolaire. Nous menons un combat pour que le plaisir de la lecture revienne au premier plan. La plaisir de la lecture se développe-t-il dans le public et notamment le jeune public sénégalais ? Je pars toujours du principe qu'avant de tirer des conclusions, il faut se poser la question. Que faisons-nous en faveur du livre ? Que faisons-nous pour que ce livre soit à la portée de tous, accessible aux populations et surtout qu'il ait un attrait ? Cela veut dire faire de beaux livres et les faire vivre. Il ne suffit pas de faire des livres, il faut des animations, que les auteurs puissent rencontrer le public, développer les bibliothèques, les clubs de lecture. Tous ces lieux, ces endroits où le livre peut être vivant, vont favoriser l'adoption de cette pratique. Le développement des bibliothèques est quelque chose d'important. Cela dépend souvent des politiques publiques. Existe-t-il une politique publique du livre au Sénégal ? Est-elle suffisante? Bien sûr, il y a une politique publique du livre, qui est portée par le ministère de la Culture via la direction du livre et de la promotion de la lecture. Elle œuvre notamment sur le réseau des Clac, les centres de lecture et d'animation culturelle, qui sont assez nombreux et permettent un maillage du territoire. On peut toujours estimer qu'il faut aller plus loin. Mais en tout cas, ils font déjà ce travail, qui est à saluer. Maintenant, il faut le compléter, l'État tout seul ne peut pas tout faire. Il faut que les initiatives privées viennent s'additionner en complément. Dans quelle langue lit-on au Sénégal ? Le jeune public lit-il toujours en français ou a-t-il accès désormais à des livres en wolof ? Le jeune public lit majoritairement en français aujourd'hui, mais le wolof – et les langues nationales de manière générale –, sont en train de se développer. Il y a une prise de conscience au niveau du grand public et aussi au niveau des institutions et des organisations, qu'il faut écrire et lire correctement le wolof. Depuis quelques années, les langues nationales ont été introduites dans le système scolaire en phase de test. Le combat désormais, c'est au delà du scolaire, de faire toute cette production qui va accompagner le reste de la vie. Parce qu'il ne suffit pas d'apprendre la langue à l'école, il faut en dehors, dans le cadre de la lecture-plaisir, avoir du contenu, de la production. Des maisons d'édition se sont spécialisées dans les livres bilingues en français – wolof, en français – pulaar. Nous sommes en train de sortir des imagiers pour les un à trois ans, Mes premiers mots en wolof. Il faut offrir au public de quoi adopter la lecture et faciliter la lecture dans les langues nationales. Les éditeurs font face à des équations économiques compliquées. Comment faites-vous concernant la question économique des intrants, le prix du papier, les frais de distribution? Est-ce une équation économiquement viable, aujourd'hui, au Sénégal ? C'est une équation compliquée. La distribution, c'est un problème. D'un côté, nous avons ceux qui produisent, qui sont les éditeurs. De l'autre, les libraires qui commercialisent. Entre les deux, il manque un pont qui est celui de la distribution, qui facilite la circulation des œuvres. Aujourd'hui, c'est quelque chose qui n'existe pas ou qui n'est pas développé comme en France. Les publications dont vous en avez parlé ont subi, sur tous les continents et dans tous les pays, le prix du papier, le prix du transport. Ce qui fait que l'impression locale est chère et ce qui implique aussi des prix de vente qui sont relativement chers et inaccessibles au public. Nous essayons de trouver des moyens de baisser les prix, dans le choix des ouvrages, dans les choix de fabrication. Faire un livre souple coûtera beaucoup moins cher qu'un livre cartonné. Nous réfléchissons à la manière dont le livre soit le moins cher possible et le plus accessible aux clients, mais en maintenant aussi cette équation, à savoir qu'il faut que cela reste économiquement viable aussi pour la maison d'édition. La maison d'édition Saaraba est adossé à un grand groupe – Editis, pour ne pas citer. Une petite maison d'édition qui s'associe à un grand groupe, un schéma que l'on connaît bien en France. Pour vous, c'était le chemin obligatoire pour réussir ? Dans le projet Editis, ce qui m'avait séduit – par rapport à d'autres projets de ce type –, c'est qu'ils avaient fait le pari de faire des livres adaptés au contexte africain, produits par une équipe locale. Souvent, ce qui se fait, ce sont des livres qui sont produits ici en France et qui sont exportés vers l'Afrique. On ne peut pas trouver mieux pour justement restituer les histoires qui vont vraiment parler au public cible. Être adossé à un grand groupe, ça permet beaucoup d'avantages. Cela permet de bénéficier d'une certaine expertise, des services supports qui sont en France. Lorsque nous rencontrons une  difficulté, on sait qu'on peut se tourner vers d'autres personnes qui ont des années d'expérience. Il y a une expertise, un conseil, un accompagnement. Et, quoi que l'on puisse dire, il y a aussi une assise financière, une trésorerie qui permet d'aller beaucoup plus vite qu'on ne le ferait en étant seuls. Mais vous êtes indépendants sur le choix éditorial. Vous publiez les auteurs que vous avez envie de publier sans que la décision soit prise à Paris pour vous. Exactement.
