Argument for the existence of God
POPULARITY
In this episode, we continue our deep dive into the question: How do we know God exists? Today we will give an overview of various popular arguments for the existence of God, including the Kalam Cosmological Argument, the fine tuning of the universe, William Paley's Watchmaker Argument, the argument from aesthetic experience, and Pascal's wager. "The Cosmological argument is a family of arguments that seek to demonstrate the existence of a Sufficient Reason or First Cause of the existence of the cosmos... The kalam cosmological argument traces its roots to the efforts of early Christian theologians who, out of their commitment to the biblical teaching of creation ex nihilo, sought to rebut the Aristotelian doctrine of the eternity of the universe." The argument is extremely simple: 1. Everything that begins to exist has a cause. 2. The universe began to exist. 3. Therefore, the universe has a cause. This is part 2 of our apologetics study as we work through "The Blackwell Companion to Natural Theology." James Sinclair, co-author of the chapter on the kalam cosmological argument with William Lane Craig, joins the show to discuss the scientific evidence in support of premise 2. We look at the FRW mode, astronomical evidence for the Big Bang, the Hawking-Penrose singularity theorems, the BVG theorem, quantum gravity approaches, and the exceptions to each of these approaches. Come join the conversation and bring your questions! James D. Sinclair (MS Physics Texas A&M, BS Physics Carnegie-Mellon) is a senior anti-air warfare analyst for the United States Navy with a specialty in the constructive (digital only) modeling of air-to-air combat. Some career accomplishments include analytical support for the fielding of the AIM-9X Sidewinder missile, combat utility evaluation of the F-35 Lighting II, and presentations at public symposia such as the Military Operations Research Society (MORS) and the Combat Identification Systems Conference (CISC). He began to interview cosmologists in the early 2000s on the topic of the beginnings of the universe, bringing Navy knowledge integration methods to the formulation known as the Kalam Cosmological Argument. This ultimately led to a collaboration with philosopher William Lane Craig and two co-authored articles: “The Kalam Cosmological Argument,” in The Blackwell Companion to Natural Theology and “On Non-Singular Spacetimes and the Beginning of the Universe,” in Scientific Approaches to the Philosophy of Religion. He also co-authored the article "Fine-Tuning and Indications of Transcendent Intelligence" with Robert Spitzer.
Episode 117Does the universe have a beginning? If so, does it require a cause? In this episode, we explore the Kalam Cosmological Argument, a powerful philosophical and theological case for the existence of God. Originating in Islamic philosophy and championed in modern times by thinkers like William Lane Craig, this argument follows a simple yet profound structure: (1) Whatever begins to exist has a cause, (2) The universe began to exist, (3) Therefore, the universe has a cause. We'll break down each premise, discuss objections from skeptics, and examine how contemporary science—like Big Bang cosmology and thermodynamics—intersects with this ancient argument. Whether you're a believer, skeptic, or just curious, this episode will challenge your thinking on the origins of everything.Find our videocast here: https://youtu.be/4olNCURgX94Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/reakt-music/deep-stoneLicense code: 2QZOZ2YHZ5UTE7C8Find more Take 2 Theology content at https://take2pod.wordpress.com/

Send us a textJoin us for an exciting conversation with renowned Christian theologian Dr. William Lane Craig as we explore his foundational book, Apologetics: An Introduction. Originally published in 1984, this work remains deeply relevant for Christians today. In a world filled with philosophies that challenge the Christian faith, Craig offers a clear, rational defense of two central pillars: the existence of God and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We'll dive into how these themes equip believers to stand firm in their faith and respond thoughtfully to critics. Dr. William Lane Craig is known for his work in Christian apologetics, philosophy of religion, and his defense of the Kalam Cosmological Argument. He is a professor of philosophy and a leading voice in debates on the existence of God, the resurrection of Jesus, and philosophical atheism. His expertise and contributions make his book Apologetics: An Introduction especially valuable, as it provides historical context and philosophical rigor in defending Christianity, which remains crucial for believers today. His depth of scholarship enriches any discussion of these timeless theological topics.Apologetics: an introduction: https://a.co/d/eBpOARY

My third argument for God's existence is the Kalam cosmological argument. In this 1-N-Done episode, I summarize the argument. I will explore the argument in-depth starting next week. The essence of the Kalam cosmological argument is that temporally finite things require a cause for their existence. Since the universe began to exist in the finite past, it also requires a cause. An examination of the properties required of such a cause match the properties of the theistic God.Web: ThinkingtoBelieve.comEmail: ThinkingToBelieve@gmail.comFacebook: facebook.com/thinkingtobelieveTwitter & Gettr: @thinking2believParler & Truth: @ThinkingToBelieve
Philosopher Trent Horn offers some revisions to the Kalam Cosmological Argument.
There's a common objection to the Kalam Cosmological Argument that goes something like this: we never actually experience anything beginning to exist, we only ever experience new arrangements of pre-existing material. Hence, since we don't experience things really beginning to exist, the Kalam's causal principle is left unsupported. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Justin Mooney, a philosopher specializing in mereology (the study of part-whole relations) to discuss whether this objection has any merit. We take a deep dive this week into the concept of belief in the paranormal! Josh and Scott return to discuss the difference between faith-based approaches versus more scientific fact-based standpoints. Josh presents the Kalam Cosmological Argument, which is a framework for allowing the possibility of God to exist. And we use this framework to then discuss how this can possibly explain the supernatural world and things like ghosts, Bigfoot, UFOs, and other paranormal phenomena. Come down the rabbit hole with us as we break down why belief in the paranormal may not be as far-fetched as some would have you think! #paranormal #supernatural #bigfoot #ghosts #ufos #god Links! Many have attempted to discredit the Kalam Cosmological Argument for God. Have they succeeded? Join Frank for this special midweek podcast episode as he hosts not one, but TWO of the most accomplished Christian philosophers, Dr. William Lane Craig and Dr. Stephen C. Meyer. Both guests present their own approaches to the argument and answer the main objections to it. And during the second half of the show, they tackle a long list of thought-provoking (and sometimes mind-boggling) listener questions! Including: If God created the universe, who created God? How is math the product of a mind? What does "began to exist" mean in the Kalam cosmological argument? How do we know the creator is the Christian God? What is the Borde-Guth-Vilenkin (BGV) theorem? Is it possible to reconcile young + old earth creation views? If God is timeless, how did He create time? To view the entire VIDEO PODCAST, be sure to join our CrossExamined private community. Atheists are motivated to show the Universe did not have a beginning! The Big Bang • Alexander Friedmann used Einstein's theory of general relativity to propose an expanding Universe• Catholic priest and professional astronomer Georges Lemaitre proposed what would later be called “the Big Bang theory” in 1927 using Einstein's theory of general relativity and Friedmann's expanding model• This basic model is still being tested and tweaked today• In 1929, Edwin Hubble discovered that far-away stars are “red-shifting” in every direction• This only makes sense if the Universe is expanding• If we extrapolate backwards, we end up with a fixed point at the beginning of the Universe!• Atheists were quick to propose an alternative solution: what if the Universe was expanding, but matter is continuously created to keep the average density the same?• This is called the “steady state” hypothesis• This would allow for an infinitely old Universe• In the 1960s, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson discovered the “cosmic microwave background radiation”• If you point a radio telescope at the space between stars, you will hear faint interference• This demonstrated that the Universe was formerly more dense than now, which refutes the steady state hypothesis In basic terms, what does the Big Bang theory say? • The Universe began approximately 13.7 billion years ago• Space and matter have been expanding and cooling since then What is the current state of the Big Bang? • We will never be able to travel back in time to observe the beginning• Physicists used high-energy collisions to test hypotheses related to the Big Bang• There is a physical restriction on understanding the first moment of the Big Bang Are there viable alternatives to the Big Bang? • Oscillating universe — Universes expand and contract until the right one pops out• Multiple Universes — Infinite number of Universes exist beyond our ability to observe them• Inflationary models• Hawking's theory William Lane Craig on Alternatives Oscillating Model: • Violates the laws of physics (a beginning singularity is inevitable according to general relativity)• Not enough density in the universe to contract the universe (pg. 114)• The universe is actually speeding up in its expansion• Some estimates say that only 100 universes could have existed before this one (does not resolve the problem for atheists) (pg. 115) Multiple universes (especially one with an eternal mother universe): • Cannot explain the beginning of the model (a quantum sea of energy is something, not nothing)• Eventually, all universes would collide together (pg. 117) Inflationary models: • One cyclic model is inconsistent with the string theory that it is based on• Another chaotic inflation model does not resolve the problem of a beginning (pgs. 116-117) Hawking's theory: • Uses imaginary numbers in the equations to describe the universe• Essentially an attempt to game the equations to remove the origin of the universe (pg. 120)
Episode 56– Show NotesWe're delighted to welcome SkyDive Phil back on the show. Not on vegetarianism as we'd trailed (please be patient) but on his recent work on the Kalam Cosmological Argument. The most prominent form of the argument, as defended by Christian apologist and philosopher William Lane Craig, states the Kalam cosmological argument as the following syllogism: Everything that begins to exist has a cause. The universe began to exist. Therefore, the universe has a cause. The conclusion is then used to fit God to that cause. Phil has released a long video based on interviews with scientists, philosophers and mathematicians. It covered various ways the premises have been defended. Craig subsequently responded to the video using his podcast YouTube outlet and then Phil prepared a second video to reply to William Craig. Here's the links to the Phil videos: https://youtu.be/pGKe6YzHiMEandhttps://youtu.be/femxJFszbo8 This was a massive amount of work by Phil and his team and the results are brilliantly helpful. "Everything that begins to exist has a cause." So begins the classical argument for God's existence known as the Kalam Cosmological Argument. Contemporary sciences of the heavens have, at least for the time being, confirmed that the universe we currently inhabit did indeed have a beginning. But what caused our universe to come into existence? The secular literature on the origin of the universe mentions God only in passing, or often merely to claim that theists are arguing about a god of the gaps. But if God did not create the cosmos, what did? When you read through the contemporary theories, they start to sound not a little like "invisible attributes" of God. Whatever created the universe in a naturalistic worldview has to be powerful beyond description, employing laws of physics heretofore unknown to man (as the current laws known by scientists 'break down' at the beginning), beyond space, beyond time, not made of anything physical or material, and either infinite or eternal. On part two of our discussion with Christian and astrophysicist Dr. Leslie Wickman, Dan explores some of these questions in more detail. Whatever you may think of the Big Bang, it certainly can be a point of discussion upon which you can build a conversation with your skeptic or atheist friends. From Leslie's website at Azusa Pacific. Leslie Wickman is a research scientist, engineering consultant, author, and inspirational speaker. Why does it look like philosophers get stuck in mundane and trivial details blowing it out of proportions? For instance, do you think that if you were to 'imagine/conceive' in your mind Dora the Explorer popping into existence from thin air in your room that she could actually appear out of thin air in your room? No right!? But philosopher J L Mackie thinks so. We look at Mackie's absurd position, miracle-denier philosopher David Hume's point of agreement on the Kalam and more in this latest episode.Links and citation:Record a question and stand a chance to be featured on SAFT Podcast: https://www.speakpipe.com/saftpodcastWatch the video podcast here (https://youtu.be/y9Kgbwjvz4E)Interested to join our voluntary team as Graphic Designer? Or has it existed from eternity past? If it DID have a beginning, this raises a question: Did the universe have a Creator? In PART 1 we explored this question scientifically. Now, let's look at it philosophically. Aristotle believed the universe was eternal in the past. But Al-Ghazali disagreed. He pointed out that if the universe did NOT have a beginning, then the number of past events in the history of the universe is infinite. But that's a problem because the existence of an actually infinite number of past events leads to absurdity! It's metaphysically impossible. Why? Mathematical entities like numbers, sets, and equations are non-physical and abstract. They can't cause anything. Yet, for some reason, the physical universe operates...mathematically. As Galileo put it, “The book of nature is written in the language of mathematics.” “Scientists do not use mathematics merely as a convenient way of organising the data. They believe that mathematical relationships reflect real aspects of the physical world. Science relies on the assumption that we live in an ordered Universe that is subject to precise mathematical laws. The Kalam has been one of the "introductory" apologetics arguments, and as a result, has been a topic of intense discussion. Today, I go back into the catalogues and bring up an old video that Zac and I made a few months back. I felt it would be helpful to share this video with you and hopefully you can find it helpful. --------------------------To check out more about my content feel free to go to my YouTube Channel Philosophy for All to access clips and extra discussions
Learn how to answer the common question "Who made God?" and learn one of the oldest and best arguments for the existence of God - the Kalam Cosmological Argument. Remember: Atheists believe that the entire universe came into existence from NOTHING. This takes more blind faith to believe than any miracle recorded in the Bible! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mensalliancetribe/support

Dr. Richard Firth-Godbehere PhD is one of the world's leading experts on disgust and emotions. He is an independent researcher and consultant in the history, language, science & philosophy of emotions & an honorary research fellow at the centre for the history of the emotions, Queen Mary University of London. Richard's first book, "A Human History of Emotions" (also known as "Homo Emoticus") will soon be published in over a dozen languages in countries ranging from Japan to the USA, from Australia to Brazil. In Sentientist Conversations we talk about the two most important questions: “what's real?” & “what matters?” Sentientism is "evidence, reason & compassion for all sentient beings." The video of our conversation is here on YouTube. We discuss: 00:00 Welcome 01:27 Richard's Intro - The history of human emotions - Academia & public engagement - History "never talked about feelings" but wars start "because someone gets annoyed" - You can't really separate emotion & rationality "You cannot make a decision unless you feel something" - Interdisciplinary 06:00 What's Real? - Lapsed Catholic mother & an "its all bloody rubbish-arian" father - Scientific family; Doctors, engineers, nurses. "We didn't go into the seminary" - Joining mum in a spiritual phase. Tarot, mediums, psychics... - Realising you could "read people" without tarot - "Yeh - this is a load of rubbish" - "Firmly atheist". The incoherence of "god". "If it's timeless it doesn't exist anywhen, if it's spaceless it doesn't exist anywhere" - "Every answer... has come down firmly not on the side of the supernatural" - "In a world where we have a billion HD cameras... why do we only see blurry photographs [of ghosts]?" - Hume's scepticism - The Kalam Cosmological Argument "doesn't get you back to god... it could have been a farting space pixie!" - "People assume emotions mean 'irrational'" - Science is driven by excitement, wonder, passion & curiosity - "The idea that science is people in lab coats with no feelings is completely wrong" - "Emotion is a driver & part of decision-making" - "The Stoics didn't suppress their emotions, they used them!" 19:10 What (& Who) Matters? - Ethics comes from us being an evolved group animal. "If we all went around stabbing each other we wouldn't be here" - The Golden Rule - Secular Humanism - Well-being for humans & beyond - "I have a real problem with 'everyone must be happy!'" - Negative emotions (e.g. appropriate fear) can help wellbeing - Good/bad forms of hate & love - The harm of "toxic happiness." Hey everyone welcome back to another season of "The Christian Apologist". Today I want to point out that the Kalam argument isn't an argument that takes you straight from no God to a God. What it does do is point put that there's a cause for the universe. We can then take that cause and use arguments to deduct all other explanations and get back to a God. Hume claimed the fact we can conceive of something coming into existence without a cause shows it is possible. He's wrong not only about his conclusion but his premise as well. https://www.jstor.org/stable/43301996?seq=1#metadata_info_tab_contents (Note: Wolfson is incorrect about the argument from design not being used in Jewish philosophy as an independent proof to the existence of G-d. Question Time Stamps for Quick Reference: 0:00 - Introduction 1. 1:20 [Kalam Cosmological Argument] When using the Kalam Cosmological Argument, how can I convince skeptics that this argument should lead to belief in the God of the Bible specifically, and not just "a creator" in general? 2. 7:58 [About the Antichrist, Antiochus, & Daniel] Is there any biblical support for the idea that Daniel 11: 36-45 is talking about the antichrist instead of Antiochus IV? 3. 16:08 [Old Ages in Genesis – Literal?] How do you address the advanced ages found in the book of Genesis? My wife and I were discussing this last night. She takes them literally, while I view them more symbolically. How do you view it? 4. 23:15 [Is Tradition as Authoritative as Scripture?] I was speaking with Orthodox Christian friends about tradition, and they said John 21: 24-25 was the best example of the Bible mentioning oral tradition as being as authoritative as itself. Thoughts? 5. 27:52 [Mark & Revelation – Passage Comparison] Are Mark 13: 24-27 and Revelation 6: 12-17 describing the same event? 6. 31:37 [How to Tell when Scripture Directly Applies] How do we determine the difference between text in the Bible that only relates to the cultural context of the time vs. text that is trans-cultural and relevant for all time? 7. 37:41 [“The Restrainer” / Eschatology] When the restrainer is removed, will non-believers lose their compassion and morals? (See 2 Thessalonians 2:6-7) 8. 41:40 [Should Atheist Philosophers Shake our Faith?] Are you ever shaken by why there are brilliant philosophers of religion, like Graham Oppy, who are atheists? I sometimes feel like I must be missing something. 9. 48:39 [The “Sinner's Prayer”] I was wondering, what is a good alternative to the “sinners prayer”? How should we lead someone to salvation? 10. 49:46 [Molinism, Free Will, Circumstances] In Molinism (or your soteriology), is people's choice to believe only dependent upon the circumstances God places them in? If so, why doesn't God make circumstances that makes everyone believe? 11. 53:44 [Difficult Passages – Deut. 22, Rape] A friend of mine points to the law on women and rape in Deuteronomy 22: 23-24 as an example of "flawed teaching" in the Bible. How should we understand this verse? 12. 59:19 [What is the point of the book of Esther?] Why is Esther in the Bible? I see no moral purpose, no mention of God anywhere, and the last two chapters have dangerous implications. 13. 1:04:02 [The Significance/Importance of Baptism] A friend who is a recent Christian hasn't chosen to be baptized yet. He seems to not understand the importance of baptism. How can I explain the importance of baptism without being pushy? Ultimately, it's his decision. 14. 1:06:57 [What does it Mean to "Wait on the Lord"?] What does it mean to "wait on the Lord," and how (in general) would you counsel someone who's in that season? 15. 1:08:53 [How to Differentiate between Our Mind and the HS] Can you speak to how to tell the difference between the Spirit burdening your heart & just being obsessive about something? A friend broke contact with me during great pain a long time ago, and I still worry. 16. 1:12:54 [Is it O.K. to Accept a Trial Instead of Praying?] My unborn baby has a serious birth defect. Several friends are praying for a miracle. Is it o.k. if we don't? I do believe God could heal that way, but I'm just trying to live with what's real right now. 17. 1:15:45 [1 Corinthians 5: 11, Family Gatherings] What is your perspective on the application of the “Do not even eat with them…” passage when it comes to family (1 Corinthians 5: 11)? Do you think this includes not going to family gatherings? 18. 1:19:48 [How to Help Someone who Doesn't “Walk the Talk”] How do I talk to my wife, who believes in Jesus & prays “In Jesus Name, Amen,” but doesn't read the Bible or know the true meaning & story behind Jesus Christ? Her lifestyle doesn't add up with the script. 19. 1:21:10 [Do Politics Bel

Hello and welcome to Focus, the Catholic Answers podcast for living, understanding, and defending your Catholic faith. I’m Cy Kellett, your host. The Kalam argument has become very popular in recent decades, actually after some neglect. It has done so as you’ll hear in this podcast because it’s been promoted by a certain apologist, part…
An atheist offers what he sees as the best arguments against God. I admit ahead of time that this is mostly low hanging fruit. But I also would say that this sort of atheist reasoning is so prevalent that it needs to be addressed. That being said, this stuff is pretty bad. I want to offer a breakdown of this atheist's article which is perhaps a pretty serious commentary on some of the problems in pop-atheism. All in all, there are 4 really bad arguments, and 1 really tough one. I'll try to get to all of them, but when I did this for my small group yesterday I was only able to get to the first four. We'll see how it goes. This video is in lieu of the Mark series which will pick up in TWO weeks. Time Stamps: 1. 6:23 We Are All Atheists2. 24:46 Religion Only Exists Through Indoctrination3. 44:42 Atheism Is Instinctual4. 48:06 Religion Is Desperation5. 1:00:58 The Problem of Evil Links and more links to stuff you probably want to see: The original article I'm responding to is HERE. You're about to get a crash course on evidence for God! And we will deal with a bunch of objections to it as well. I'm joined today by Braxton Hunter from Trinity Radio (his channel here https://www.youtube.com/user/braxhunt ) and we are teaching you the Kalam Cosmological Argument for God's existence. This is supported by philosophical and scientific arguments and evidence. In this video we intend to give you a simple version of the argument as well as a more careful and complex explanation of it.
