As today's screenwriters and actors grapple with financial challenges in a rapidly changing showbiz landscape, combined strikes by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA have brought Hollywood to a standstill. Productions are stalled, press tours canceled, and the 2023 Emmys postponed. The economic impact is expected to far surpass that of the last writers' strike, which cost the L.A. economy more than 2 billion dollars. On this episode of “The Envelope,” hosts Yvonne Villarreal and Mark Olsen discuss the issues underlying this historic strike, pay disparities in streaming, and concerns over the rise of AI with L.A. Times film reporter Josh Rottenberg and actor Sarah Ramos — a member of the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee. Listen now wherever you get your podcasts.
For months, even after the WGA was forced to strike, Hollywood was looking to SAG, and that union's negotiations with the AMPTP. 'Would the actors strike? Could they?' Turns out they can. And they have. On Episode 12 of StrikeTalk, they tell us why. Happy fa la la la holidays everyone! That's right! It's officially the start of 2022's Christmas TV movie wrap-up season! Every week I watch all the made for tv Christmas movies on all the channels and recap them for you here and tell you if you should binge them or if they're cringe. We had five movies this week to start off the season. Noel Next Door kicked it off for Hallmark and it was just okay to me. We Wish You a Married Christmas was Saturday's Hallmark movie and it was a Nikki DeLoach movie but instead with Marisol Nichols that had me pulling out my hair by the end. And then Sunday's A Kismet Chrisfmas made everything better with a cute magical Christmas cookie story lead by Sarah Ramos and Carlo Marks. On Hallmark Movies and Mysteries they set their bar high with We Need a Little Christmas - it was so good and I cried five times. Lastly on GAC Family, the only other network to start in October, Destined at Christmas tried….they just tried a little too hard for me. If you're going to remake Serendipity at least have one over the top character like Eugene Levy. Find all that plus more now! And follow along on TikTok at Sockbunstudios to find all the movie reviews plus more Christmas talk daily. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Cities aren't meant to last, according to writer Annalee Newitz. In their book “Four Lost Cities: A Secret History of the Urban Age,” they explore the rise and fall of ancient sites. What can architecture tell us about how we live? What can urban planning tell us about our changing values? And ultimately, why are cities abandoned? Later, we also dive into the story of a scientist who helped us understand the very structure of our DNA. Plus, we get a voice message from actress Sarah Ramos (Parenthood). This week, Busy, Shantira and Caissie pre-record the pod because of Busy's busy schedule, but then a bunch of other stuff happens so they get in a time machine to go back to address further developments! Kinda. Busy discusses New Year's with her BFF Michelle and tells the shocking story of her dog Gina's dark tendencies. Shantira wants men to stop pretending that they don't know how to give compliments, and Caissie is on a quest to invent something that, honestly, could change the lives of women with sensitive heads. What do actress Sarah Ramos (Parenthood, The Affair) and writer/comedian Caroline Goldfarb (The Late Late Show with James Corden, Alone Together) have in common? They’re hysterical, devoted pop culture enthusiasts, best friends, and recently launched a podcast series called THE RENNER FILES. THE RENNER FILES, created, hosted and produced by the duo, is a new kind of true crime podcast - one that’s not a true crime at all. Instead, it’s about Jeremy Renner’s app. Why did Oscar nominated actor Jeremy Renner ever have an app? Why did he do it? Who made it? Who used it? And why did it shake the internet to its core? They set out to investigate the mystery of the app, but got so much more in return. THE RENNER FILES lays out a thrilling timeline of the app’s rise and fall through talking head interviews with key players, journalists, and unexpected Renner experts (like actor Seth Rogen). But it also tells a larger story: one about the dangerous side of celebrity fandom, the ethics of audience exploitation, the celebrity influencer complex, and the destructive power of ironic internet comedy. In this episode, we talked about their fan-filled childhoods, from Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen cruises to NSYNC concerts, to navigating the entertainment industry, and a behind the scenes look at what went into creating one of the mosts provocative podcasts out there right now. Starting September 24th, an episode of THE RENNER FILES will be released weekly on Thursdays for six weeks. It's only the second time ever that the BP Studios have been graced with two guests on one main episode, but it's a special occasion as we have Sarah Ramos (actor, filmmaker) and Caroline Goldfarb (comedian, writer) join us to tell us all about their new show, The Renner Files, and their block by the man who is famous for being friends with Kim Kardashian. It's a shameless Block Tale that will go down in the annals of show history as one of the best, and this episode is one of the best too, an "all-timer" in Stefan's words, as the Blocked Boys talk Peep This Out facemasks, getting old, and we learn more about how Stefan ended Jeremy Renner's vanity app. Plus, we get into the very upsetting RBG tributes, fizzy drinks, wet eggs in a bag, and Becca gets her very own theme song. Speaking of theme songs, our bonus episodes have some pretty amazing ones, and you can hear them (and the episodes) at https://patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every month. Last week, we released our latest edition of Word Up! with Taylor Lorenz, where we delve into the world of TikTok Cameos, and this week, we have the continuation of our BPD&D series, as Branson Reese and Jamie Loftus join us for a wonderful adventure in a mythical city. Plus, that $5 gets you access to our top-secret Discord server, all of our back catalogue of bonus episodes, and celebrations next month for our 100th episode that you won't wanna miss. JENNIFER GLYNN is a film and commercial producer. She's had her hand in many indie films, including one of my favorites, SOUND OF MY VOICE written by and starring my girl crush, Brit Marling. We gush over how Brit was destined for greatness. A practical nuts and bolts producer, she explains why the UPM and line producer roles are often confused on smaller projects. This particularly chat was recorded in October of 2018, so you may notice that I was still learning to not talk over people....Rough to hear, y'all, but such is life with caca. Gotta show you the progress! This week, we discuss knowing and owning your financial worth, the main differences between making commercials and films, and creating loyalty in Hollywood. Oh, there will not be an episode next week because I'll be at Sundance the premiere of my film, SYLVIE'S LOVE starring Tessa Thompson. Glad you're here and can't wait to hear your thoughts on my chat with Jennifer! She has since produced and line produced multiple award-winning films. One of her early credits also happens to be one of my favorite films, Zal Batmanglij’s SOUND OF MY VOICE, written by and starring Brit Marling. Speaking of Brit, who also created the short lived THE OA for Netflix, (Yes, I’m still bitter about the cancellation!), we gush over our mutual admiration for her. It's impressive and inspiring that she taught herself writing, created roles not being written for women, and carved out her own path. Since then, she has co-produced Neil LaBute’s SOME GIRLS starring Adam Brody and Kristen Bell which premiered at the 2013 SXSW Festival. She also produced BURN COUNTRY starring Dominic Rains, Academy Award Winner Melissa Leo, and James Franco. Additionally, she wrote and directed the short SMORGASBORD starring Academy Award Winner Brie Larson and Sarah Ramos as part of the prestigious American Film Institute Directing Workshop for Women. Jennifer has also produced a number of commercials, music videos, short films and digital campaigns. We compare short form vs long form content, and why she prefers commercials. She also does a great job of breaking down why the UPM and line producer roles are often confused on smaller projects. We explore finding and owning your financial worth in the marketplace. We commiserate on feeling stuck and the lack of loyalty that sometimes exists in Hollywood.

Mom and I break down nearly every branch of the Braverman family tree as we discuss her favorite TV show, Parenthood. We mostly focus on how the casting, writing, and even music of the show make it such a strong, emotional exploration of a variety of hardships and heartfelt moments in the life of a big family. We spend more time on the moments we can relate to more directly, and my mom shares a lot of insight on how the homemaker priorities of her generation and her mother's are examined in the show. Fans of the show will especially enjoy this ep, and non-fans won't be able to resist checking it out and sharing it with their families. Notes: We neglect to credit Sam Jaeger as Joel, Savannah Paige Rae as Sydney, Max Burkholder as Max, Joy Bryant as Jasmine, Tyree Brown as Jabbar, Sarah Ramos as Haddie, and Xolo Maridueña as Victor. I think we caught everybody else, but just because I couldn't rattle off these names doesn't mean they don't deserve some credit. This didn't make the mic, but Parenthood is a loose adaptation of the 1989 film of the same name and was preceded by a star-studded show that lasted a season in 1990. Thanks to Field Notes Brand for sponsoring and the Chicago Podcast Cooperative for providing sponsors and creating a podcasting community.
