Last summer marked the first time in six decades that Hollywood's actors and writers went on strike simultaneously. They hit pause on production over pay and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the film industry. The strikes brought the industry to boiling point, but wider issues were simmering for some time. They caused a multi-billion economic toll on those who work in film and television - from crew members to caterers. Businesses burned through savings and piled up debt. This edition of Business Daily unpicks the plot of one of Hollywood's biggest dramas.(Picture: The Hollywood sign is viewed during a clearing storm, January 2024. This episode is for anyone who has asked themselves why they're so invested in what is clearly outrageous, manipulative, and phony "reality" television shows. I watch Real Housewives every weekday on my lunch break, and as I've gone through phases of watching with both fascination and disgust, I've asked myself: why do smart people love dumb tv? What is it that we're drawn to? Why do we get so sucked into the drama? Is it aspirational or escapism or something darker or is it just not that deep? And so I decided to explore that topic with the perfect guest: Matt Marr, cohost of the Reality Gays podcast. In this episode, Matt and I talk about our history of reality tv watching (starting with the Real World in the 90s), and we talk about how we think reality TV has changed culture, why we're so invested in the lives of these reality TV personas, and so much more. We talked for over an hour and didn't even scratch the surface of all that we could have discussed. FULL SHOW NOTES HERE We do have an extended cut version of this episode over on the Secret Stuff patreon page, where Matt and I talk about our shared Oklahoma roots and I'll also be releasing a personal episode over there this week about my time working in reality television in the early 2000s. We. Are. Back. And by that, I mean that the Hollywood strikes have ended as SAG-AFTRA has agreed to a tentative agreement with the AMPTP, effectively meaning Hollywood is back in business. I am definitely referencing the strike ending only and not the fact that we took an unannounced 2-month hiatus because that no longer matters! We are here now to discuss the latest in film and tv news including the recent rumors surrounding Marvel Studios and their plans to revive the MCU. We'll also discuss the absolute avalanche of tv and movie trailers that dropped following the announcement of the strike ending. And, I guess we'll take a bit of time to address that hiatus and what we've been up to. At any rate, thanks for joining us and be sure to share your thoughts on everything we discuss in the comments. This episode is for anyone who cares about tv and movies. I have 10 things to tell you about the historic Hollywood strikes of 2023. The Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild have been fighting for wage increases, protection against artificial intelligence, and more. Think it doesn't affect you? Think again! Here are the 10 Things I talk through in this episode: What are the basics of the strike? What is the history here? What exactly do Hollywood writers do? How do they get paid? So why are they striking? (And what does striking mean? Can they not work at all?) What does mandatory staffing mean? What is the AI threat? Some notable things that happened during this strike. What was finally negotiated? How does this all affect the viewer? I want this show to be about connection, conversation, and sharing our stuff. The Hollywood strikes are something our family cares about, so I'm sharing it here with you. If this episode teaches you something, please share it on social media or with a friend. What if a SAG strike could shake up LA's luxury real estate market? What does the US's cooling inflation mean, and can it reach the Fed's target rate? Let's unpack these questions together. As we delve into the implications of the recent SAG strike, we will explore how it has forced LA's real estate agents to reconsider their strategies, especially within the luxury housing sector. The entertainment industry plays a major role in LA's economy, and any disruption within it can send waves through different sectors. Switching gears, we'll also pull apart the current state of US inflation. It seems to have cooled off, but reaching the Fed's target rate is a daunting task that we'll dissect. By focusing on the core inflation, we'll attempt to understand the challenges that lie ahead in meeting the Fed's target. And as if that was not enough, Elon Musk's potential surgery might cause a ripple in his various executive roles and even postpone his much-anticipated cage fight with Mark Zuckerberg. From the digital duel between Musk and Zuckerberg to the launch of Metta's new tech-based social media site, this episode promises an in-depth look into the business world.
