Welcome to Be the ultimate podcast with Dennis Guzick, the Old Jar Head himself. I guarantee that if you follow my advice, it will greatly benefit your career. So why wouldn't you give it a listen? Today's episode is titled "Say Thanks." The inspiration for this topic came from a quote by Hemingway: "Be prepared to work without applause." In the Marine Corps, a simple "thanks" is given when you do something well. But what about in your workplace? Sometimes you might not receive the appreciation you deserve for a job well done. It could be because your boss is insecure, too busy, or just a poor leader. While you should expect a simple verbal thanks, relying too heavily on it can lead to problems. So what should you do if the recognition doesn't come? My advice is to continue doing a great job, at least in the short term. Don't let the lack of thanks affect your attitude or your performance. Going down that road will only harm your career and prevent you from getting recommendations or job security. However, if the lack of recognition truly bothers you, it might be time to have a conversation with your boss. Approach it in a non-confrontational manner and ask for feedback on your performance. You might discover areas where you can improve and understand why your efforts aren't being acknowledged. Alternatively, if your efforts are consistently being overlooked, it may be worth considering a transfer or finding a new job. Don't waste your time and energy in a place where you feel undervalued. Remember, not every leader will thank you for your work. It's just a fact of life. But if you find that your good works are consistently going unnoticed, it might be time to make a change. And when someone does something for you, even if they're being paid, remember to say thank you. It's one of the simplest and most effective ways to motivate and appreciate others. By expressing gratitude publicly, you also elevate yourself as a leader. That's all for today, folks. Thanks for listening. And if you're considering a career change, be sure to check out my book for helpful guidance and exercises. Thank you and goodbye. Thank you for listening! Happy Thanksgiving! We have a special episode celebrating family – both two-legged and four – with Julia's cousin Kerri and her delightful pup Lucy. The pair met when Lucy was brought to the animal hospital where Kerri worked as a vet tech. In critical condition, with 2nd and 3rd degree burns, Lucy was not expected to survive. But she did and immediately captured the hearts of her caretakers, as well as Facebook groups and news organizations who were touched by Lucy's ability to survive such a terrible experience and still love the humans around her. Kerri and her sister brought Lucy home as a foster, beginning one of many what Kerri cheerfully calls her “foster fails.” Join us as we celebrate long laughs with family and reflect on what dogs can teach us about forgiveness and compassion.

Bishop Klufio taught from the book How Can I Say Thanks. Amongst other memorable lessons, he taught us that "Our Way of Saying Thanks to God, is to do what He says." Let it never be, that your personal ambitions stand in the way of God, a thankful person has no room for disobedience of God's word. May you give thanks in a meaningful way.
This beautiful book was written by Douglas Wood and illustrated by Greg Shed. It was published in 2005 by Simon & Schuster.

Thank you to The DoSeum for being a sponsor of this podcast! The DoSeum's newest holiday exhibit The DoSeum Express: Tiny Trains and Trolleys is open from November 6 – January 2, 2021. Ugly Crying, Being Kind, Saying Thank You and Soft Surroundings - what could these three things possibly have in common? Well - a loose theme of thankfulness. Starting this episode off is Alejandra with "Saying Thanks is Not A Bad Thing": I recently read a post that said manners shouldn't be forced on children, as in, “Don't force your kids to mutter ‘please' and ‘thank you'; instead, instill in them true gratitude.” While I'm all for teaching children to be truly grateful, I think it's an interesting approach to suggest that we not teach our children to repeat words of thankfulness. I'm not trying to stir the pot here. Let me explain. Then a bit about being thankful for arriving at a point in life where comfortable clothes trump any sense of reality in Ashley's "Soft Surroundings - My Magical Wonderland". I'm two seconds from turning 39, and I'm already digging the mature lady stores. My personal favorite? Soft Surroundings. Kathy shares why ugly crying is a good thing and why she hopes her daughter will do so whenever she needs it in "Dear Daughter: I Hope You Ugly Cry". And when all else fails and you simply just want to cry it out, accept my ears as a sounding board, my heart as a vault, and my shoulders as a resting place for your head. For there is no place I'd rather be than here for you. Kimberly implores her sons to "Please, Be Kind" and recounts how a third-grade memory shaped her definition of kindness. In a time when the world is in such a vulnerable place, why not just be kind to one another? The answer is simple: sometimes it's hard to be kind. When we disagree with one another or feel passionately about our views, it can be hard to show compassion to the other side.

Season 2 Episode 3 is all about SAYING THANKS MORE with children! I am giving you 20 minutes of how to teach little ones about the importance of gratitude and why it's so essential. Gratitude is an important part of living mindfully because when people practice gratitude and seek to “live gratefully” they are not worried about not having enough, are more accepting of others' differences, and less likely to act violently/in anger. I have come across studies that show when individuals regularly practice/express gratitude in a meaningful way, the pleasure centers in their brain are more active, their brains create more grey matter (which is helps to process information, improve memory, and better regulate emotions) , and cortisol production decreases (AKA less stress). One of the things I enjoy most about our church is something we call church without walls. Church without walls is a day where we meet at the church for a brief time on Sunday morning and then head out into the community to help people. We've done things like go to 3 different laundromats around town, hand out laundry supplies, and pay for the laundry for everyone for a few hours. We also go to some of the retirement homes around town and hand out flowers and chat with the residents, do yard work and other outdoor maintenance for a neighbor currently receiving cancer treatments, and doing interior repairs and painting for an elderly woman.
