Send me a Text Message.Welcome, everyone! Today, the old jarhead, Dennis Guzik, is back with some great career advice, focusing on an important concept in workplace dynamics—silos.Key Highlights:Introduction to Silos:Silos are structures on farms used to hold grain, where nothing gets in or out without effort. In a business context, silos refer to divisions within a company where information flow is limited unless active efforts are made.Examples of Silos in Businesses:Internal Divisions: Different departments not sharing information about projects, purchases, etc.On-site vs. Remote Workers: Lack of communication between those who work on company premises and those who work remotely.Personal Experiences:The speaker saw numerous silos during his tenure in the defense world, particularly at the Pentagon.Efforts to break down silos were only marginally successful, often requiring continuous effort to maintain communication.Impact on Employees and Companies:Silos can hinder employee awareness, professional growth, and overall company productivity.Breaking down silos fosters cross-division work, enhancing skills and professional experiences.Advice for Managers and Employees:Identify and Break Down Silos:Managers should actively look for silos and work to dismantle them.Promote information sharing and cross-division collaboration.Engage in Volunteering and Social Functions:Activities like team sports and company events increase communication and awareness.Example: Mary, who organized a company picnic, gained recognition up to the CEO level. The Importance of Breaking Down Silos:Essential for both organizational success and individual employee growth.Efforts should start from the bottom and reach all the way to the top.Call to Action:Think about how you can apply these strategies to your own career. For more career insights, check out the Dennis's book, "Find a Job that Fits Your Life."Thank you for listening!

Dennis is a Marine veteran and former corporate executive who shares valuable career advice. He guarantees that following his advice will lead to a better career• In honor of Mother's Day, he reflects on lessons learned from his mother and how they relate to career success.• Lesson 1: Cooking - You don't have to be a master chef or have a big budget to eat well, just be organized and stick to a routine.• Lesson 2: Organization - His mother was able to host large family gatherings with only one oven and pen and paper organization skills; use electronic tools available now for even more efficient organization.• Lesson 3: Don't whine - His tough mother taught him not to complain about tough situations; either solve the problem or learn to live with it.
Dennis Guzik is back for another episode of the Be the Ultimate podcast• He always tells his listeners what they need to hear, not necessarily what they want to hear• Dennis was watching the first round of the NFL draft and noticed a pattern among the families of chosen players• These players have worked relentlessly and put in countless hours of training to reach their goals• In the Marine Corps, hard work and discipline are essential for success and promotion to leadership positions• While movies may depict super-powered individuals, in real life hard work and dedication lead to success• If you want to get promoted in your career, you must be willing to put in extra effort and constantly learn new things about your profession• This mindset can set you apart from your coworkers and help you progress in your career faster• Remember, careers are a competition and it's important to always strive for improvement• As Vince Lombardi once said, "The man at the top of the mountain didn't just fall there"
The Old Jarhead is back with career advice on Non-Compete Agreements.• Non-compete agreements are contracts that restrict an employee's ability to work for a competitor after leaving a job.• Employers use them to protect their trade secrets and investments in employees, but they can limit job opportunities for workers.• The US Federal Trade Commission recently ruled that non-compete agreements are no longer legal, sparking debate and potential legal challenges.• The Old Jarhead has experience on both sides of the issue and offers his thoughts on the ruling.• He believes the FTC exceeded its boundaries, and the impact may be minimal for junior and mid-level employees but could be detrimental for small businesses with valuable trade secrets.• Ultimately, lawyers and lobbyists will likely profit from this decision while it is being sorted out.• Business owners shouldn't panic yet, and employees still constrained by non-compete agreements shouldn't celebrate prematurely.• To keep growing professionally, he recommends checking out his podcast, "Be the Ultimate," and giving his book, "Find a Job That Fits Your Life," a read.
Dennis Guzik is the host of the Be the Ultimate podcast, where he shares valuable career advice.• One of the most common questions he is asked as a former corporate leader is whether to go to grad school.• The first factor to consider is if grad school is necessary and if it will benefit your career.• If the answer is yes, then it's important to think about whether you enjoy the field of study and can handle the time and cost.• While going to grad school while working full time may take longer, it provides a steady income and potential employer support.• Full-time grad school offers a more immersive experience but requires financial investment without a salary.• Another option is going straight to grad school after obtaining a bachelor's degree, which may be beneficial with more experience under your belt.• Ultimately, the decision should be based on personal preference and weighing the factors of liking the field, needing it for your career, and being able to handle the commitment.
Career Insights with the Old Jarhead: Why Attitude Matters in InterviewsIn his insightful podcast episode, the seasoned career coach, known as the Old Jarhead, emphasizes the importance of having the right attitude during job interviews. With experience spanning the Marine Corps, corporate America, and career coaching, he offers a fresh take on navigating the interview process.According to him, a positive attitude can trump skills at the interview stage. He reasons that by the time you're called for an interview, your skills have already been assessed favorably; what sets candidates apart is their enthusiasm for the role and the company. Instead of rehashing your resume, the interview is your opportunity to showcase your interest in the company and the position, demonstrating that you've done your homework.Positive attitude aside, he also advises showing you're thinking long-term with questions about career progression within the company and its future prospects. However, he cautions against seeming too needy as it may suggest that you're likely to jump ship at the next best offer. His final takeaway? Bring a good attitude to your interview, and it could lead to more job offers. And for further wisdom on finding the perfect job, he suggests picking up his book, "Find a Job Fits Your Life," claiming it could be a game-changer in your career search.Boost your interview game and discover more pearls of wisdom by tuning into the Old Jarhead's podcast and checking out his book for comprehensive guidance.[Listen to the full podcast episode and get a copy of "Find a Job Fits Your Life" for in-depth tips on successful job hunting.]

When preparing for an interview, presentation is key:Dress the Part: Ensure your clothes are clean and professional. Making a polished impression is crucial, particularly when meeting higher-ups.Know the Field: Go beyond the job description and understand the company you're hoping to join. Your research demonstrates both commitment and enthusiasm.Engage with Questions: Showing up without questions can imply you're not fully invested. Ask insightful ones to reflect your knowledge and sincere interest.Communicate Clearly: Offer sharp, focused responses. Waffling may be perceived as unclear thinking or poor communication skills.Exit Strategically: If the conversation strays off-course, find a tactful way to steer back and close with confidence.Finish Strong: Have a powerful closing ready. Highlight your key strengths, articulate your value, and thank the interviewers for their time.Remember, interviews are as much about delivering your message as they are about the content of the message itself. Stand tall, speak clearly, and let your preparation pave the pathway to success. Go get that job!
Dennis discusses two contradictory findings regarding working remotely or in-office during Covid. Companies that force employees back into the office see lower morale and higher turnover. However, remote workers were promoted 31% less frequently. The first piece of advice is to decide what you want from your life and job - promotions or remote work. Choose based on your life goals, not just your job's demands. This may mean parting ways if they conflict. The second advice is to have an open dialogue with your boss. Explain your situation and thinking. Often, a compromise can be found that satisfies both your life needs and the business's, but this requires communication. Not all situations can be resolved, but communication is key to finding potential solutions the speaker may not have considered. Getting everyone's needs met leads to the best outcome.

· Dennis Guzik discussed defining small successes and focusing on achievable goals to measure progress.· Doing what you love is not enough; one must also be good at it and ensure there is a market for it.· Admitting what you do not know and seeking information is better than bluffing.· Sharing information with others strengthens teams and prevents problems caused by withholding critical details.· Plans should be suitable, feasible, and acceptable to determine if they can realistically accomplish the goals.· Publicly thanking others builds rapport and recognition for their contributions.· Dressing professionally commands more respect and avoids missing opportunities due to an unpolished appearance.· Creating contingency plans called "branches and sequels" prepares for unexpected issues. Something being common or popular is not justification if it is unwise or against policy, rules, or principles.
Dennis Guzik discusses his four f's for submitting a resume: fire, follow up, file, and forget. The first step is to "fire it off" by sending in the resume as soon as possible after becoming aware of an open position. The second step is to "follow up" within a couple of days by contacting the hiring manager or HR to confirm they received the resume and asking if they have any other questions. The third step is to "file it" by systematically organizing all application materials and follow-up notes for future reference when applying for other roles. The final step is to "forget it" and move on to pursuing new opportunities rather than obsessively waiting for a response, as many job postings may not result in an actual hire.

Welcome to the career podcast with Dennis Guzick, also known as the Old Jarhead. In today's episode, we'll be discussing the importance of work and offering valuable advice based on my nearly 20 years of experience in the corporate world. But before we dive in, let me mention that I'll be having oral surgery today, so let's make the most of it and get started. Now, you might be wondering why we're talking about work in a career podcast. Well, there are a couple of reasons. Firstly, finding work can be challenging, especially if you lack the necessary education or experience that the market demands. Secondly, many governments, particularly in Western Europe, have been passing laws that discourage people from working by providing generous benefits. This begs the question - why work if you can comfortably survive solely on what the government provides? Here's where my advice comes into play. I believe it's important to be a productive member of society and not rely solely on others for your needs. While it may seem appealing to sit around the house for a while, it ultimately does a disservice to your personal growth and fulfillment. But what if finding work is proving difficult? Here are two pieces of advice. Firstly, consider taking a job that may be below your desired status or education level. This will help pay the bills while you continue to search for something better. Don't be afraid to relocate or explore new opportunities - many people in Western Europe have found success by being flexible and taking on challenging or less glamorous jobs. Remember, this is just a temporary solution while you work towards your goals. Secondly, instead of solely focusing on finding that dream job, concentrate on becoming a great candidate. Invest in education and training, network with others, read up on industry trends, and ensure your resume and cover letter are always up to date and impressive. Finally, I want to emphasize that relying on government assistance until you land your ideal job is not a viable long-term solution. It's important to avoid the soul-crushing period of unemployment for an extended period of time. That's it for today's podcast with the Old Jarhead. I hope you found this advice valuable. Don't forget to spread the word about our podcast, as it comes with a money-back guarantee to help boost your career. And if you're in need of further guidance or a career change, consider checking out my book "Find a Job That Fits Your Life" on Amazon. It's an easy read that can be delivered right to your doorstep. Thank you for listening, and best of luck on your career journey!

Welcome, listeners! The Old Jar Head is back with another podcast to help you achieve the best career possible. By simply following my advice, you're guaranteed to see significant improvements. Today, we're discussing valuable career lessons we can learn from a bankruptcy situation. Now, if you've been following recent news in the United States, you may be familiar with Yellow, a large trucking company that faced bankruptcy due to excessive debt and the impact of COVID-19. However, this discussion isn't about the company itself or the effects of the pandemic, but rather what we can learn about our own careers. When Yellow declared bankruptcy, over 20,000 employees were suddenly locked out and unable to work, even if they had loads ready to haul. This serves as a reminder that no matter how much you enjoy your current job or how well you've been treated, you could be just days away from losing it. Economic conditions or decisions made by senior management may lead to unexpected job loss. So, what can you do to avoid a career catastrophe if you find yourself in a similar situation? Here's some valuable advice: Start setting aside money from each paycheck to create a financial cushion. The amount you save should depend on your marketable skills. Those with high-demand skills may only need to save for a month, while others with less in-demand skills should aim for about six months. Continuously improve your skills to make yourself more valuable to potential employers. Consider learning new skills or staying updated in your industry. For example, truck drivers could benefit from developing coding skills. Build a strong professional network within your field and keep it active. This network should extend beyond your current coworkers. Engage with people from social or religious organizations and broaden your connections. This network can provide valuable advice or even job opportunities. Keep your resume up to date at all times. If you unexpectedly lose your job, having a polished resume ready will give you an advantage when searching for new opportunities. Competitors of companies experiencing closures often seek to hire the talent that was let go, so you want to be prepared and not miss out due to an outdated resume. Consider this situation as a potential opportunity to explore new career paths. While you may have enjoyed your previous work and company, it could be the perfect moment to make a change. Don't be afraid to think broadly and consider if there's something else you've always wanted to pursue. To recap, take immediate action by saving money, continuously improving your skills, building a diverse professional network, keeping an updated resume, and embracing the possibility of a new career path. If you feel that a career change is the right move for you, my book "Find a Job That Fits Your Life" will be an invaluable resource. It's available on Amazon, so be sure to check it out and read it. Welcome to Be the ultimate podcast with Dennis Guzick, the Old Jar Head himself. I guarantee that if you follow my advice, it will greatly benefit your career. So why wouldn't you give it a listen? Today's episode is titled "Say Thanks." The inspiration for this topic came from a quote by Hemingway: "Be prepared to work without applause." In the Marine Corps, a simple "thanks" is given when you do something well. But what about in your workplace? Sometimes you might not receive the appreciation you deserve for a job well done. It could be because your boss is insecure, too busy, or just a poor leader. While you should expect a simple verbal thanks, relying too heavily on it can lead to problems. So what should you do if the recognition doesn't come? My advice is to continue doing a great job, at least in the short term. Don't let the lack of thanks affect your attitude or your performance. Going down that road will only harm your career and prevent you from getting recommendations or job security. However, if the lack of recognition truly bothers you, it might be time to have a conversation with your boss. Approach it in a non-confrontational manner and ask for feedback on your performance. You might discover areas where you can improve and understand why your efforts aren't being acknowledged. Alternatively, if your efforts are consistently being overlooked, it may be worth considering a transfer or finding a new job. Don't waste your time and energy in a place where you feel undervalued. Remember, not every leader will thank you for your work. It's just a fact of life. But if you find that your good works are consistently going unnoticed, it might be time to make a change. And when someone does something for you, even if they're being paid, remember to say thank you. It's one of the simplest and most effective ways to motivate and appreciate others. By expressing gratitude publicly, you also elevate yourself as a leader. That's all for today, folks. Thanks for listening. And if you're considering a career change, be sure to check out my book for helpful guidance and exercises. Thank you and goodbye. Thank you for listening! Welcome back to the "Be the Ultimate" podcast with Dennis Guzik, your go-to for guaranteed career advice. Today, we're diving into a topic that I hope you never have to face, but it's important to be prepared just in case. I'm talking about how to respond when someone accuses you of something at work, whether it's a colleague or a superior. We've all been there when someone throws a false accusation our way and it ignites our anger. Instead of immediately reacting, which could jeopardize your career, here's what you need to do. First, take a moment to cool off. Don't respond right away. Allow yourself to transition from "hot anger" to "cold anger." This will help you tap into disciplined aggression and approach the situation rationally. Grab a pen and paper and write down exactly what was said to you. Be honest with yourself when analyzing if any parts of the accusation hold truth, if some are honest mistakes, or if there are intentional lies. Take your time to think through each accusation and craft a calm and well-thought-out response. It's often helpful to set it aside and review it the next morning for further edits. When you have your response ready, address the person or people who made the accusation in a cool and rational manner. This is the best way to handle the situation. If the issue persists, you may need to escalate it, but you'll have your well-reasoned response at hand. It's worth noting that emotional issues are not best addressed via email due to possible misunderstandings. However, if necessary, this technique can still be applied effectively. I personally have used this approach multiple times throughout my various careers, and it has always yielded positive results. Being able to come back the next day with a clear and logical explanation of your position is invaluable. So, while I hope you never have to use this advice, you now have a reliable way to handle accusations should they arise. That's it for today's episode of the "Be the Ultimate" podcast. If you found this advice helpful, be sure to share it with your friends who are looking to excel in their careers. And if you or someone you know is asking the question "what's next?" in their career journey, whether just starting out or nearing retirement, consider checking out my book, "Find a Job That Fits Your Life," available on Amazon. It's a great resource for finding the answer to that question. Thank you for tuning in, and remember, with the right approach, you can handle any challenge that comes your way.
