On this special edition of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by film director Sean Mullin to discuss the highly acclaimed and sensational Yogi Berra documentary "It Ain't Over" that's currently airing on Netflix. When we say "It's Not Over' has been one of the most highest scored documentary reviews of all-time, that's quite literally not an exaggeration. It has a Tomatometer score of 98% and audience approval rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Patrick talks about stumbling upon the film on Netflix and putting it on with the intention of working background noise before being pulled into just minutes in. Sean spends some time talking about his life and career, including growing up in Indiana, going to West Point, living in New York and doing comedy and why he ultimately moved out to the west coast. They then get into the documentary and Sean talks about the process of getting the film made, how he went about getting some of the key talking heads, key parts of the film and the incredible reception it's received. I would say if you're a New York Yankees fan or even a fan of the history of baseball, this is a must-watch film. It certainly is but's also so much more. This is a film about one of the great American success stories and goes way beyond sports. Hell, there's even Oscars buzz floating around "It Ain't Over" and it's a honor to have Mullin on to discuss it all. Go check out "it Ain't Over" on either Netflix or Amazon Prime. You can read several reviews of it on Rotten Tomatoes. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter: @PatMoranTweets. Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra is one of baseball's all-time greatest superstars. He amassed 10 World Series rings, three American League MVP awards and 18 All-Star Game appearances. He caught the only perfect game in World Series history in 1956. Yet for many observers his prolific accomplishments on the diamond were overshadowed by his remarkable and unique appeal as a pop culture personality. Long before athletes endorsing products became commonplace, Yogi was starring in TV commercials and connecting with fans from every demographic. His groundbreaking TV commercial appearances and unforgettable "Yogi-isms," which initially appeared to be head-scratching philosophical nuggets, became fashionable catch-phrases that made him a national treasure and an endearing figure on the American pop culture landscape. In telling the complete story of his extraordinary journey, It Ain't Over chronicles Berra's life as a savvy, commanding, bad-ball-hitting-catcher with a squat frame but also a D-Day Navy veteran, coach and manager, loving husband and father and, yes, product endorser and originator (mostly) of his own brand of proverbs now ingrained into everyday life. First person accounts include granddaughter Lindsay Berra, Yogi's three sons (Tim, Larry, and Dale), plus a legion of former Yankee greats, including Derek Jeter, Joe Torre, Mariano Rivera, Willie Randolph, Don Mattingly, Tony Kubek and Ron Guidry. Also featured are Billy Crystal, Bob Costas and Vin Scully, plus photos and eye-opening archival footage on and off the diamond. Berra famously said, "I'd be pretty dumb if I started being something I'm not," and It Ain't Over lovingly makes clear he stayed who he was for the benefit of baseball and everyone else. Berra was born on May 12th, 1925 in St Louis, Missouri in a neighborhood known as "The Hill." He spent his entire professional career playing in New York with the Yankees and briefly with the Mets, before retiring in 1965. Montclair, New Jersey was home for Yogi and his wife, Carmen. In 1972 he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. That same year his iconic uniform No. 8 was retired by the Yankees. In 1988, the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center opened its doors on the campus of Montclair State University. He passed away at the age of 90 in 2015

We know more about Mars than we do the bottom of the ocean, yet what's down there is keeping us all alive. In this episode, we ask why a scientist who's spent his life studying tiny microorganisms on the seafloor would head to Washington and work in government. Is it humans vs. bacteria? Is it science vs. a government? Should we send Sean Mullin to Washington, or back to the bottom of the ocean? More importantly, there's a threat to the human race that might kill us all, and the question is, are you ready? We've got answers.

We celebrated our eighth birthday with our annual comedy night - here are four stories from the event: Malachi O’Doherty gets to grips with the Bishop; Bob Salisbury gets some funny looks in Seskinore; Helen McClements gets the goat on a Paradise holiday; Sean Mullin gets a selfie and a whiff of something from Boris Johnson. Paul is your host. Tenx9 is a monthly storytelling event where nine people have up to ten minutes to tell a true story from their own life on a particular theme. It began in Belfast in 2011, started by Pádraig Ó Tuama & Paul Doran, and as well as filling the main venue in the Black Box, it has spread to Scotland, England, USA, Canada, Netherlands & Australia. While it draws on the tradition of oral storytelling, we also encourage the shy, the nervous & the reticent - some people are confident speakers other use notes or the full text. We work with people via email or workshops to edit and improve their stories, to help them find their voice.

KINGS OF BEER features behind-the-scenes interviews with Budweiser’s top Brewmasters and experts, along with cameos by beer aficionados Aisha Tyler, Michael Voltaggio and Jay Chandrasekhar. KINGS OF BEER is a fun and thoughtful deep dive into the world of brewing and what it takes to really be at the top of your game. It’s depicted through the eyes of Budweiser’s most highly-skilled Brewmasters, whose job is to maintain the consistency of the American Lager, which is widely regarded as the single hardest beer to brew. While the relationship between brands and filmmakers is nothing new, this film marks a sharp (and welcome) turn because now, with a film like KINGS OF BEERS, brands are doing more than just making a sales pitch -- they’re working with filmmakers to tell stories via the feature film format and they’re letting the storytellers take the lead. Director Sean Mullin joins us for a frothy conversation on the art and science of brewing the world’s oldest adult libation. For news, screenings and updates go to: kingsofbeer.com

ListenEN_Interview_2-20180622-WIE20 Refugees around the world, refugees in Canada Canada received 47,800 refugee claimants in 2017, more than twice the number in 2016. (Paul Chiasson/The Canadian Press/Aug. 4, 2017) War, internal conflicts, and environmental disasters in 2017 drove over 16 million people from the homes worldwide according to the United Nations. In terms of countries receiving refugees, Canada was listed as ninth with over 47,000 asylum claims last year, more than double from the year before. Lynn spoke about the situation with asylum seekers internationally and in Canada, with Petra Molnar lawyer and researcher with the International Human Rights Program at the University of Toronto. Supreme Court of Canada rules against an evangelical Christian University The Supreme Court decision in the Christian university case has left some experts scratching their heads. (Albert Couillard-CBC) An evangelical private university with accepted high standards wished to expand by offering a law school to potential students. The university, as a Christian institution, says students must agree to a covenant on behaviour such as no cheating, lying, no alcohol on campus, and sex can only be between a married heterosexual couple. Some provincial law societies said the covenant discriminates against lesbians and gays and so wouldn't accept graduates to the bar in their provinces. The university took the case to the Supreme Court of Canada which ruled in a split decision in the law societies favour. Marc spoke with civil and constitutional rights lawyer John Carpay of the non-profit Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms who says he's troubled by the SCC decision which he says seems based more on a political agenda than on the law itself Teaching the youngest generation to be digitally literate Coding was a priority in the Liberal government's 2017 budget with $50 million allocated to help teach students from kindergarten to Grade 12 how to code. (Teghan Beaudette/CBC) Canada does fairly well when it comes to digital literacy in the general population but there are concerns about falling behind in coming years.
