In this conversation Laura Williams shares the importance of connecting with others, agile classrooms, and the Authentic Learning Alliance. Some of the other topics that we discuss.Emersion is important in figuring out what you want to doAsk yourself: Are learners connecting to experts to further their learning in an experience or project? Are you producing or creating something for someone beyond the classroom? Are students using or engaging in a real process that helps them develop skills and knowledge? How do experts engage in this (processes) Look to learn from othersLook to solve problems in your communityConnect your school to your communityBe part of the solution in making our communities betterWin - Win - Win : Students are learning, businesses are benefitting, and teachers are having funLearn about industries practices - how do real businesses create processesFour thingsSafety a prerequisite Deliver value continuouslyMake People Awesome Experiment and learn rapidlyTwo things - Daily Stand Up (share out what they have been working on, what are they working on today, what are my impediments) Scrum board -Sticky notes with physical board ( To do, doing, and done) map out and plan, this is how I'm going to do it, chunk it, ) Teachers can see who is working on what and when Making it visible makes it easier for students We're constantly getting feedback from our environment all the time. Reflect on it.It's important to know what you want, it is also important to know what you don't want. You don't know what you don't know. Learn from others. How do we get kids comfortable with new ideas, new propositions. How can we help them find joy in living, learning, and working.Help students learn how to identify action steps.Network, talk to people who have already been there. No business has ever said know, look to connectConnections that lead to opportunities that can lead to changing trajectories for kids.Lauara Williams bio:Laura Williams (MAT, MA- ELPS) is your resident authentic learning expert, facilitates the Iowa Authentic Learning Network, and is the founder of the Authentic Learning Alliance. This week we present two stories from people who were faced with barriers to their education. Part 1: Eager to succeed in her Physical Chemistry class, Shaniece Mosley is thrown off by a professor's attempt at a compliment. Part 2: Lelemia Irvine struggles to get through his PhD program as he's constantly told that his identity as a Native Hawaiian is incompatible with academia. Shaniece Mosley has been a teacher for eight years, and currently teaches chemistry, AP Chemistry, and science research at Midwood High School in Brooklyn. After attending Northeastern University and SUNYAlbany, where she received a B.S. in Chemistry, she attended Pace University where she earned an M.S. in Secondary Science Education. A former New York City Teaching Fellow, Shaniece is now an MƒA Master Teacher. She enjoys spending free time with her husband Dan and their 2 year old son Greyson. Lelemia Irvine, PhD, EIT, is kupukaaina, a lineal descendant from the aboriginal families that sprouted out of the land of Waiʻanae, Oʻahu. Dr. Irvine is an Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Hawaiʻi at West Oʻahu. He is now at his dream job as a professor but the road to get there was not a breeze. Dr. Irvine is the first Kāne Kanaka ʻŌiwi (Native Hawaiian male) to earn a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 2019. In his doctoral research, he studied the physics of stormwater within a bioswale using predictive and computational approaches. As far as we know, presently there are less than 10 Native Hawaiians with a PhD in any engineering discipline in the world. Dr. Irvine is a self-described Rain Farmer, a term he coined, when his father, who has dementia, ask him “boy, what you studying in school?”. As a rain farmer, he seeks to connect sky to aquifer thru the physics of fluids and indigenous engineering ways of knowing. Dr. Irvine shares his personal journey as an empowerment tool for others to co-navigate and constellate the village of higher education systems. Learn more about your ad choices. My name is Stephanie Leonard and it is my honor to serve as principal of this wonderful school. Each year it is a priority of mine to build relationships with students, parents and staff. I have been in education for 20 years and began my career as a high school science teacher. Since that point I have been an Assistant Principal at two elementary schools and have worked in the Curriculum Department for the district for 5 years before coming to McGee's. I am originally from Four Oaks and graduated from South Johnston High School. After attending UNC Chapel Hill (B.S. in Biology) and NCSU (B.S. in Secondary Science Education), I returned to South Johnston to teach science. While teaching, I obtained my National Boards for Science Education. I returned to school a few years later for my Masters in Administration from ECU through the Principal Fellows Program. My husband Brian and I have been married 22 years and we have three wonderful daughters, ages 20, 17, and 5. In my free time, these three keep me very busy spending time with them and attending their activities. I believe teachers and school staff have the power to change the lives of students each and every day, and we want to make sure we are a positive influence that they can carry with them throughout their lives. "Carolina Bays and Younger Dryas Impact?" Episode #77 Today we sat down with Chris Cottrell who runs the Dabbler's Den youtube channel focused on researching the Carolina Bays and other impact sites possibly connected to the "Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis". We will discuss how the Saginaw Bay Impact site might have been ground zero with the fallout creating the Carolina Bays. Was Saginaw Bay which was covered by the Laurentide ice sheet struck by an object from the Taurid meteor stream? We will also touch on the work and research of Graham Hancock, Randall Carlson, George Howard, Antonio Zamora, and Michael Davias. *Chris' Youtube Channel Dabbler's Den: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJ8v7TydVhPpXGGi0XqCBpg *Chris Cottrell's Education Credentials: B.S. in Secondary Science Education from Valdosta State University (2001) *Minor in Geology *Minor in Environmental Geography M.S. in Foundations of Education from Troy State University (2006) M.S. in Geoscience from Mississippi State University (2015) *Check out our new channel at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKCf7SAPYav74Mnk7612Wuw *If you enjoy our podcast and want to help us grow, check out our Patreon account and enjoy the exclusive episodes and interviews. This week on IAQ Radio we welcome May Dooley, Principal of EnviroHealth Consulting, Inc. of Hummelstown, PA. May started her career as a secondary science teacher prior to going into home inspection and indoor environmental health consulting in the mid 80's. She has now completed over 3,000 residential and commercial IEQ inspections in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US. May is one of those people that never stops learning and the list of seminars, conferences and meetings she has attended is impressive. She has dealt with both routine and unusual IEQ issues and we look forward to discussing her interest in what she refers to as electrical pressure and much more. May has an MS in Secondary Science Education from Hofstra University and an MA in English from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

To date, there has been very little work done or literature available on the stories, the narratives of experience, of those Aboriginal individuals who have journeyed through post-secondary, Eurocentric paradigm-based Western education successfully. This is a critical missing (qualitative) piece in the literature. So much quantitative data and attention around the issues of Aboriginal success focuses on the lack of success, on Western education, on the negatives or deficiencies, on how poorly Aboriginal students do relative to non-Aboriginal students. Seldom do we hear how they have excelled, what has enabled them. In understanding the post-secondary experience of Aboriginal students, it is important to hear the story from their voices and from their perspective such that it will lead a better understanding of success rather than always focusing on the deficit. The speaker's research entailed collecting and evaluating the oral, educational, experiential narratives of perceived both “successful” and “unsuccessful” Aboriginal individuals who journeyed through post-secondary Western education. These narratives served as the raw data around her research, focused on answering the questions: 1) How did those Aboriginal individuals journey through post-secondary education, with focus on science, and succeed when most do not? 2) What worked for them? 3) What were their challenges? 4) How did they manage that space between paradigms? 5) How did they turn the “space between” from a “gap, border or roadblock” to a liminal place of possibility? 6) How do they exist in that space now? 7) How does their story, their experience serve to inform, enable and mentor others embarking on such a journey? 8) How can such success enable the voice and subjectivity of Aboriginal people for the future economic milieu and globalization? Speaker: Michelle Hogue Ph.D. Dr. Michelle Hogue is the Coordinator of the First Nations Transition Program at the University of Lethbridge and teaches as well, in that program. A Métis from Saskatchewan, her recent Ph.D. from the University of Calgary, focuses on the success of Aboriginal students in Post-Secondary Education, with a passionate focus on the sciences. Michelle believes post-secondary education is critical for Aboriginal students and it is the “New Buffalo”. She also believes the young Aboriginal populations are going to be the next leaders and professionals because, unlike the non-Aboriginal population, they live in and between both worlds which will be advantageous in this time of globalization.
