Send us a textUnlock the potential of Project Based Learning (PBL) and its impact on the future of education with Matt Navo of the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence. Our conversation peels back the layers of educational policy and its intersection with PBL, providing an enlightening perspective on how we can reimagine learning. As a former eighth grade English teacher, my own classroom transformation through PBL led to notable improvements in discipline rates and attendance, a testament to the methodology's effectiveness. With standards at the forefront, we discuss the balancing act between real-world problem-solving and the rigidity of state testing, aiming for a harmonious blend that advances student performance.Exploring the terrain of instructional frameworks that support PBL, we question the adequacy of a single test to capture the breadth of a student's educational journey. We highlight the critical role of universal design for learning (UDL) in cultivating environments where diverse learning styles can thrive through PBL. Additionally, we address the importance of advocacy in educational policy changes, underlining the power of community involvement in ensuring PBL's longevity. Each chapter of our dialogue paints a picture of the evolving landscape of educationāfacing challenges, seizing opportunities, and striving toward a future where every classroom is a hub of inspiration and innovation.CONNECT WITH MATT NAVOmnavo@ccee-ca.orghttps://ccee-ca.org/Twitter: @MatthewNavoJOIN THE ONLINE PBL COMMUNITYhttps://magnifypbl.mykajabi.com/pmocSIGN UP FOR THE MAGNIFY LEARNING NEWSLETTERhttps://www.magnifylearningin.org/newsletter-sign-upSHARE A PBL WIN!www.pblshare.com ORDER THE BOOK PBL SIMPLIFIEDhttps://amzn.to/3VLsBtGSCHEDULE A PBL TRAINING WITH MAGNIFY LEARNINGhttps://resources.magnifylearningin.org/onsite-workshopsCHECK OUT RESOURCES MENTIONED ON THE PODCASTPBL Simplified Podcast LinksASK RYAN A QUESTION FOR THE PODCASThttps://www.magnifylearningin.org/ask-ryan-your-pbl-questionsFOLLOW RYAN ON TWITTERhttps://mobile.twitter.com/ryansteuerBOOK A MAGNIFY LEARNING DESIGN DAYS WORKSHOPhttps://www.magnifylearningin.org/design-days-sign-upSome of the links above are affiliate links which means we get a small commission on anything you purchase using that link (at no more cost to you).

Sarah Hunt, M. Ed. has more than 20 years of classroom instructing and school leadership expertise. She has implemented, led, and built an entire school-wide experiential learning program. Additionally, as an experienced Project-Based Learning (PBL) educator, her students learned by working on real-world, personally relevant projects.Ā She also has served on countless strategy teams and school boards tasked with evaluating, implementing, and launching new school initiatives.Ā Sarah is also the recipient of the 2019 NSEE Outstanding Leader in Experiential Education: K-12 award.Ā In this episode, Sarah talks to us about Authentic Learning, and how this approach to education not only enhances the ability to engage student voice, but it is also a great strategy for engaging and motivating students. It isn't easy, but Sarah gives some steps on how to incorporate it into your classroom practices. There is no doubt Sarah is passionate about Authentic Learning and she would love to talk to any interested educator about their ideas. Sarah and I talk about how authentic learning developed for her as an educator. She noticed that it felt more relevant to give students opportunities to connect what they were learning to the real world. Her students became more invested and their learning was on a deeper level.Ā Since starting she has known that project-based learning and authentic learning were more valuable, and she has worked with some great educators, to understand the research behind the benefits.Ā Sarah is always trying to find ways to give students voice and choice in the classroom. One of the best things we can do as a teacher is to put ourselves in our student's shoes and try to remember what it was like for us to be seen and valued and heard.Ā As a consultant, she shares how she works with educators to shift the way that they're teaching, and add more authenticity to their curriculum. She dispels the idea that authentic learning is an approach in which kids can learn whatever they want, and learning doesn't really matter. Authentic learning has standards we want them to meet. There's flexibility in how you get there.Ā Sarah shares that the most critical aspect of teaching is creating a relationship, so her students feel like she cares about who they are as an individual, more than she cares about who they are as a student.Ā Ā Sarah shares resourcesĀ Another colleague who's also trying it. This season, we're asking the question: What does an extraordinary education look like for every student? We're hosting conversations with the most innovative, equity-minded leaders in education from all across the country ā and that includes young people. In our fifth episode, we'll explore what it looks like to elevate relevance in the student experience. What does it look like for young people to access real world learning during the school day? What happens when they are in the driver's seat of their learning such that what they learn is relevant to them? We don't just want to hear from folks with innovative schools. We want to hear from you, too. In every episode on this season of The Hummingbird Stories, we'll pose a question and ask you to weigh in through our Telbee. This week's question asks you to think about your own community. Given your community's strengths (like local organizations, businesses, cultures) and/or needs (maybe you wish your community had a bike shop, like Jenny does!): what learning experiences or school would you build, with an unlimited budget? Visit sayhi.chat/hummingbird to chime in. As teachers and school leaders ourselves, we always knew relevance was critical to learning. What we didn't always know was how to bring it to life in our classrooms or across our schools. As principals, we tried training from the Buck Institute to implement Project Based Learning (PBL). The training was fantastic and useful, but we didn't have the structures in place for strong implementation. We also had a staff with varied levels of readiness. As a result, some teachers leaned in heavily and developed PBL units regularly, and we did our darndest to get them ongoing coaching and support. For some teachers, they did the one project unit minimum, because that's what they could give at the time. We were glad to customize based on teacher needs and readiness, but it was really challenging to authentically make a schoolwide shift to change how we planned and executed learning experiences. Ultimately, we have come to believe that to create authentic real world and relevant learning experiences with students and teachers, we must reimagine many other parts of school. But what are those other elements that need to shift? We believe we might start to answer this question by looking and listening to leaders who design innovative school models exuding relevance. On this episode, we hear from two of those Hummingbirds, Miguel Gonzalez of Embark Education and Dr. Tyler Thigpen of The Forest School. We'll also hear from Quinn and Luke, two students at Embark, the school. We are huge fans of the work of Miguel and Tyler are doing. At Embark, students learn to create their own schedules each week with the guidance of an educator. Included in their choices of how they spend their time is an Integrated Shop Project. Embark has two North Denver businesses embedded in their school: Pinwheel Coffee and Framework Cycles. Students choose to spend time in either shop to learn and practice skills through projects. At The Forest School, learners in grades 9-12 design their own high school experience. They even get to build the courses they themselves take. How we wish we had an experience like that as young people! We know a lot of āHummingbirdsā who are no longer waiting for change in a system on fire, but rather choosing to do something. We hope they'll inspire you to take real action, no matter how small, toward redesigning schools. An extraordinary education for all young people is possible. But it's going to take all of us to make it happen.

During today's Teacher Tips, the boys discuss Project Based Learning - what it is, how it works, and why it's important for all content areas to consider working on right away! Ā What is it?Ā Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge. (Buck Institute for Education) Best practices for implementation:Ā use chart of tasks so students can self pace while you monitor, answer a big question that engages a variety of skills (e.g.: identify a problem in your community and create a robot that can solve said problem), award credit to students for steps in the process, have them do several iterations of project with peer/teacher feedback along the way, use a clear rubric for each of the several skills students incorporate. Pitfalls to avoid: itās not an all or nothing grade; consistent monitoring of student progress is essential, and if necessary pull students into small groups to work with the teacher. For students who are excelling at current skills or who finish early: have them research and incorporate new skills or ideas you have not yet covered. Ā Ā
