This week, Shamash Alidina guides us through a practice focused on the calming power of belly breathing. In our fast-paced world, stress can easily take hold, and this meditation offers a simple yet powerful way to find relaxation and ease. Belly breathing, or deep diaphragmatic breathing, encourages a full breath that engages the diaphragm and helps activate the body's relaxation response. By consciously slowing your breath and focusing on the expansion and contraction of your belly, you can send signals to your nervous system that it's safe to relax, lowering stress levels and promoting a sense of calm. Don't miss out on our upcoming Community Connection Meditation Series from August 26th to 30th, 2024! This live virtual event brings us together in the spirit of mindfulness, connection, and growth. This week, Christopher Willard and Olivia Weisser bring us a mediation inspired by the Japanese concept of ma, which refers to “the spaces between everything.” This practice invites us to take the opportunity to explore the empty spaces that exist all around us and inside us.  For instance, we might think of the space between the plants in the garden, or between the notes in a song. It can also be emotional space, like the silences in a conversation. Or the little gaps between our thoughts and emotions.  Often, we don't even notice these empty spaces—but bringing our awareness to them can reveal new meaning and beauty. By exploring the space in-between through this mindfulness practice, we also enhance our creativity, noticing skills, and awareness.  We're also thrilled to announce our upcoming Community Connection Meditation Series, taking place from August 26th-30th, 2024! On today's episode of Doing Divorce Different, I have Divorce Goddess, Tosh Brittan joining me. Tosh is such a bright light and I really enjoyed my conversation with her learning about what led her down the path of divorce coaching and her advice on choosing yourself. Tosh discusses how to create a choice of empowerment during divorce by being your own lighthouse. She talks about how cold plunging has helped her build her resilience, and finally what it's like to be an empty nester. Tosh shares so many amazing nuggets during this episode, so make sure to tune in!  In this episode: [2:14] What led Tosh down her path of work? [6:10] Did Tosh's ex spouse want to go through their divorce the same way she did? [8:16] How to create a choice of empowerment in your divorce. [15:16] What about when you are going through divorce with a narcissist or abuser? [18:33] Tosh discusses her cold plunges and how they've helped her build resilience. [25:32] How has Tosh dealt with being an empty-nester? [31:48] Why is writing out your feelings so purposeful and why does it work? Key Takeaways:  You have a choice, you can be in your lighthouse, be in power, do the work on yourself, or you can be a person who gets drawn down and gets lost in the mess and drama. You get to choose where you are coming from regardless of where your ex-spouse is coming from. Kindness is clever because you are taking ownership. Change the mindset from kindness being weak to being something you own. Be a better person. Your actions will speak and you'll feel better about yourself, rather than stooping to their level of negativity. When becoming an empty-nester, explore who you are, what do you like about yourself? Self care is so important. There are four things that you can do if you are feeling lonely that will make you feel better.  Quotes:  “If you come from an authentic, honest, kind, place with yourself your operating at a really high vibration, authenticity is the highest  vibration we can offer and operate from, and what we can do is be there for ourselves. And what I realized is when I didn't look after myself I got myself into a bit of a state.” - Tosh Brittan Guest Bio:  Tosh Brittan has been a thought changer around divorce since 2014. Believing in a more integrated approach to this difficult, painful, and challenging life event.  As a divorce coach, MBSR mindfulness teacher and Reiki master teacher Tosh's client work focuses on emotional and mental well-being and she has created her unique divorce coaching brand - Kindness for Conflict®.  Her blog began in 2014 at her kitchen table, to emotionally and mentally support others going through divorce. In 2019 she started the Divorce Goddess podcast  (which ranked #41 in the US and #16 UK Relationship charts). The @divorcegoddess Instagram page is a testament to others seeking a kinder approach to divorce, with many positive, inspiring messages sent from followers worldwide. Her book Kindness for Conflict is out January 2023 and she co-authored #1 Amazon Best Seller Category Personal Health Mindfulness for Challenging Times with Shamash Alidina and Ceremonies - The Art of Ritual Living with Holistic Fashionista and is a columnist for Expert Magazine. Tosh loves cold water swimming and often takes a client for their first dip experience! Loves dancing (ex-clubber at heart) and is an empty nester Mum of two young amazing adults. Shamash Alidina is a mindfulness and ACT trainer. And is also the author of mindfulness for dummies. ACT stands for acceptance and commitment therapy and in this episode of the podcast Shamash shares some of the principles of ACT and how they can help us cultivate more resilience and self-compassion in our lives. In summary the key principles of ACT are: Be present Open up Do what matters By following these principles we're more able to make conscious choices and overcome any challenges we face because of them. Most of the time there are no wrong or right choices. There are just choices and repercussions. If we believe that we're able to deal with any repercussions then it becomes much easier to make choices. It's when we find ourselves unable to make choices that we get stuck. We also talk to Shamash about how pain and purpose are two sides of the same coin. And how doing something meaningful usually mean that it's also going to be challenging. We talk about how achieving goals and living our values affect our sense of happiness and meaning. As well as the pressure we put ourselves under to always be happy, particularly in our community. Being happy all the time isn't really the point. Particularly if we criticise ourselves for not being so. If you're an entrepreneur or you're starting a new project or venture and you're wondering if you'll be able to overcome all the difficulties and challenges that will inevitably come your way then I recommend you listen to this episode. Because there are a few nuggets of wisdom that Shamash will share with you that will help you cultivate the resilience and resourcefulness you need. The approach is highly evidence-based, with early studies going back 40 years. ACT is particularly well suited for our currently global challenge, as it often states ‘we hurt where we care'. And the hurt many of us are experiencing is because we do care about health, connection and our way of living. In this talk and workshop, I'll offer an introduction to ACT, how it was developed, and why increasing psychological flexibility, the main aim of ACT, is arguably the most well-researched measure of resilience and wellbeing in all of psychology. You'll discover the six core flexibility skills, the evidence-base of ACT and how to develop those six skills to be clearer about your values and take action on them, using mindfulness, compassion, acceptance, and even tuning into your transcendent self, to flourish and stay psychologically flexible in these challenging times. Shamash is one of the UK's leading professional mindfulness teachers. He is the international bestselling author of Mindfulness For Dummies and The Mindful Way through Stress. This episode is the audio recording of the live webinar that Laurence and I have committed to broadcasting every Friday during the lockdown period in the UK. We were joined this time by one of the funniest and kindest people we know. His name is Shamash Alidina and is the author of Mindfulness for Dummies as well a being an ACT trainer and a keynote speaker on wellbeing and resilience. ACT, also known as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or Training, was around before mindfulness became a thing. It's a highly flexible evidence-based model that can be used by everyone from coaches and consultants to school teachers to therapists and doctors. At it's core ACT is about feeling the feelings rather than pushing them away. As Shamash says during the webinar the more we try to push unpleasant feelings away the more they'll grow. If we're able to accept these feelings and give them space the less likely they'll hijack our actions. Understanding how this works is essential for first time entrepreneurs. When you're launching a business fear and self-criticism are your worst enemies. By applying some of the principles in ACT we believe you'll be better equipped to deal with the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. I hope you enjoy this episode, particularly the little meditation Shamash shares towards the end.

In a world full of negative news compounded and inflated by politicians, the media, and online trolls—we all need to slow down, stop, and just be from time to time. To reconnect and yes, be happy. This week’s guest Shamash Alidina is that ray of light, that beacon of hope. Author of Mindfulness for Dummies and Relaxation for Dummies,Shamash has many years’ experience as a mindfulness teacher, trainer, coach, and worldwide speaker—having trained with Jon Kabbat Zinn, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Mattieu Ricard. In this wonderful and joyous episode Shamash talks of Kindfulness, the discovery and cultivation of kindness towards your own self and the difference it has on your life, and The Museum Of Happiness that he co-founded with Vicky Johnson to help everyone find deep happiness through experiential adventure. This may well be the most important podcast you ever listen to. This is Your London Legacy.  “The idea is to help social enterprises and other businesses remember that values come first. Yeah, you do need to make a profit but if that becomes too much of the focus then you kind of lose your way.” 7:00 Shamash had a bit of a revelation his first summer while attending university. He was excited to be working as an engineer and making money, actual money he could spend on things and be happy. Then the moment came when he went shopping in Oxford Street, and there was just a sense of emptiness, no fulfillment at all. Funnily enough, he saw a poster on the tube with a quote from Socrates and decided to jump into a philosophy class—and Shamash has never looked back, and now tries not to stare too far into the future either. He practices mindfulness and living in the moment.  “Right now is the highest spread of wealth in the world, lowest chance of dying of disease when young—violence on the planet is at the lowest level it’s ever been…however, the worst time to be born for mental health challenges is right now.” 20:30 While visiting his brother in NYC, Shamash came about googling books on mindfulness and didn’t find hardly any at all. After a quick fill in contact form with the “Dummies” series of information books, he quickly found himself contracted to write Mindfulness for Dummies. This launched a point where he switched to teaching and writing about mindfulness for a living – a journey that started on a one-on-one basis all the way to his “pop up” Museum of Happiness going viral on Facebook and kicking off a whole series of events focused on happiness.  Shamash is focused on spreading his teachings of mindfulness and Kindfulness—a concept that focuses on discovering and cultivating kindness towards yourself and the difference it has on your life. There are a wealth of resources on Shamash’s website such as ebooks and trainings, and I highly encourage you to head over to Twitter (https://twitter.com/London_Podcast) and you’ll be entered to grab a copy!  Links Mindfulness for Dummies (https://www.shamashalidina.com/books) ACT Training (https://www.shamashalidina.com/act) Support this podcast

*****TRIGGER WARNING ***** - we talk about Nikki's traumatic start to motherhood at the beginning of the Podcast. About Nikki Nikki left her job as CEO at the London-based charity Wings for Life UK to set up 10 of zen. She also began to explore the role of meditation in her life, finding inspiration in Raja Yoga Meditation and the practitioners Thich Nhat Hanh, Tara Brach, Mark Williams and Kristin Neff. Her commitment to a regular 10-minute daily meditation practice started when she became a mum in 2014, a transition she found very tough. Fondly known by her family as her ‘10 of zen’ time, she started to develop a style of meditation more tailored to the highs and lows of being a mum. Bringing together classic meditation skills, an underpinning knowledge of psychological theory plus personal experiences of therapy and life coaching, Nikki started to record meditations for other mums while on maternity leave for a second time in 2017. She then went onto the train as a certified mindfulness teacher with author, coach and lecturer Shamash Alidina. In 2018 she set up 10 of zen as a business with the goal of bringing the proven benefits of her own mindfulness practice to fellow mums around the world.  In this Episode we discuss Nikki’s journey into to Motherhood and her diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. 30% off all women experience some level of birth trauma Within 2 weeks of birth couldn't leave her room without panic attack. Her diagnosis was not available on the NHS as Nikki didn’t fit into the clinical 'box'. Nikki’s condition was only diagnosed when she was thinking about having a second child. Nikki is part of ‘Make Birth Better” - taking systematic approach to prevent this from happening and diagnose birth trauma quicker. If anyone is experience these symptoms, this should be their first point of call. The website has all the information Nikki started daily meditation of 10 mins meditation. She practices mindful tools for mums: with a focus on stress less and love more. Started from a You Tube video. Mindfulness involves applying conscious awareness to our day to day tasks. Brings together the practice of various teachers and undertook training with Shamash Alidina. What is mindfulness: present moment awareness. Becoming more aware of what is around us and from within. Concept: Mirror Neurons. Children will mirror the parents emotions. How deeply interconnected we are, especially through children. Explicit or implicit - children pick up on these cues. Nikki’s fIrst degree is in cognitive neuroscience Having tools to build up a more friendly approach to yourself. Manage emotions with more gentleness or kindness. As mothers, we are really tuned into our care giving capabilities - brain does not know the difference if you, or someone else, hugs you - release of oxytocin Ten of Zen squad: Two ways to start - (1) Practice of mindful meditation (2) mindful living, little changes in day-to-day life. Hard to form a habit. Do this by creating community/accountability, and to start really small. Live call every Sunday night - gets you accountable. Library of meditation on website to tap into anytime. Next Zen Squad: End of May - looking out on Instagram Nikki taught her eldest to breathe when overwhelmed/angry. Nikki’s next programme launch is Teach Ten - teaching 10 min mindfulness practice to women health professionals such as doulas, midwives, etc. Piloting program in April.
