Ex-Dutch special forces operator turned breathwork coach Wouter Huizer joins me to discuss masculinity, elite performance, and mastering the nervous system. We get into counter-terrorism, ethics, high-performing teams, anger, discipline, military identity, the “off switch,” up-regulation, insecurity, and refusing the shot. A punchy, masculine, and insightful chat with plenty of laughs and hard-won wisdom. Read more from Wouter here: www.Magniful.nl www.swartgym.nl www.BaseQamp.com ------------------------------------------------------ Wouter Huizer has had a distinguished career in elite military units, including the Marine Corps and the Royal Marechaussee, spanning 24 years. Seeking healing, Wouter turned to breathwork and cold exposure, which alleviated his pain and restored his emotional awareness. This transformation led him to study embodiment practices, blending science, ancient traditions, and modern techniques. Now, as a stress regulation specialist at SwartGym, Wouter helps individuals—from elite operators to civilians—enhance resilience, self-awareness, and well-being. He also works with defense units, teaching stress management to optimize physical and mental performance. This week's show is with Mark Walsh. Mark has spent the last 20 years helping people get out of their heads and into their bodies—sometimes gracefully, sometimes not. He's the author of The Body in Coaching and Training and Embodied Meditation, and hosts The Embodiment Podcast, which has over 3 million downloads. He also ran The Embodiment Conference, ambitiously featuring 1,000 teachers and half a million attendees, which happened to be the world's largest Zoom event. As the founder of Embodiment Unlimited, Mark has trained over 2,000 embodiment coaches across 40+ countries (some of which still let him back in). His latest project, Feral Philosophy, is a deeper, more unfiltered look at embodiment, free from the usual wellness clichés. His work has taken him from an alcoholic to a psychology graduate; from war zones to boardrooms; from teaching yogis and coaches to working with police and military personnel. He also co-founded Sane Ukraine, now run by Ukrainian professionals to provide trauma and embodiment training for therapists, trainers, and coaches. With a background in psychology, aikido (black belt), and various movement practices—including yoga, meditation, dance, bodywork, and improv comedy—Mark blends deep expertise with a refreshingly direct, down-to-earth style. He's worked with companies like Google, Unilever, and Shell, though he's much happier when he's not wearing a suit. He swears more than most coaches, dances worse than he thinks, and isn't a fan of fluffy self-help talk—but he is passionate about helping people reconnect with themselves in a real, practical way. In this potent and timely conversation, Lian journeys with Mark into the heart of the crisis facing young men today. Together, they explore the four profound disconnections at the root of modern suffering - body, social, ecological, and spiritual - and how restoring these essential connections can guide young men from isolation to purposeful living. Reflecting on Mark's own transformative journey from troubled youth to mentor, they discuss the critical role of strength and embodiment in building resilience, character, and spiritual depth. Mark shares how genuine community and meaningful rites of passage can fill the void left by our culture's forgotten initiations, nurturing the very soul of young men. Drawing from mythological truths, ancient principles, and real-life experiences, Lian and Mark highlight how reconnecting with nature and spirit can profoundly heal both individual lives and wider cultural decay. They illuminate practical pathways for guiding young men back to themselves, toward greater meaning, joy, and wholeness. Ultimately this conversion shines a light on how we might help young men return to themselves, reclaim their inherent value beyond societal expectations in our fractured modern world. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: Physical strength is not merely a superficial pursuit; it is a foundational virtue that creates resilience, self-awareness, and deeper character in young men, providing a doorway to emotional and spiritual growth. In a culture that has largely lost authentic initiation rituals, young men face isolation and confusion - yet re-establishing community, connection to nature, and meaningful mentorship can profoundly alter their trajectory. The modern meaning crisis arises from deep disconnection - body, social, ecological, and spiritual. To heal this, each of us must consciously reconnect, embracing practices that nurture the soul, restoring a sense of genuine meaning and purpose. The Warrior Philosopher joins me for a dive deep into the intersection of philosophy, masculinity, and the struggle for meaning in the modern world. Drawing on Nietzsche, Mishima, and the ideals of the warrior poet, we explore how strength, aesthetics, and discipline shape a life of purpose. We also discuss the alienation of modern men, the consequences of comfort and decadence, and why rediscovering struggle might be the key to a deeper existence. What does it mean to live with virtue? How do we balance strength and beauty? And is there still a place for aristocratic values in a world obsessed with mediocrity? Ep. 171 (Part 2 of 2) | An emotionally powerful and deeply inspiring conversation with renowned embodiment and trauma educator Mark Walsh from the U.K. and Ukrainian psychologist and trauma trainer Kristina Obluchynska, where we learn about effective ways of treating trauma in the middle of an ongoing war, what trauma therapists are left holding, and how beautiful is the human spirit when it embraces right action. When Russia commenced its full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago, Mark went to Ukraine, located willing psychology students, educated them in body-oriented trauma therapy and training, and with Kristina and several other trainees co-founded Sane Ukraine, with the urgent mission of preventing an epidemic of trauma disorders in Ukraine. Beginning with applying trauma first aid and teaching resilience skills in places like the local railroad station where people were coming in from the front lines, and in bomb shelters, Kristina and several other psychologists have now educated thousands of people about trauma—active duty soldiers, veterans, survivors, wives of combatants, and first-line responders such as doctors, teachers, and social workers—and trained hundreds of them to become trauma trainers themselves. It is an honor to bear witness to Mark's courageous actions and the humble heroism of Kristina and her team in the face of the devastation being leveled on Ukraine and Ukrainians. “We don't grieve,” Kristina tells us, “because grief comes after safety. We don't even use the word safe anymore,” she continues, “only relatively safe.” Mark points out that modern warfare is not just running around with guns—drones hunt civilians and if you move, they kill you. “Do we all have PTSD?” the soldiers ask. With Sane Ukraine, there is someone to answer their questions and teach them what they can do to help themselves and each other. Resilience comes from relationship—from connection to self, others, nature, and spirit. Does the concept of post traumatic growth even apply considering the intensity of this war? co-host Roger wonders. At the end of this extraordinary, heartfelt conversation, when asked what we could do to help, Kristina advises, “Help the army. We are talking here about healing, but what we really need is to survive.” Recorded January 9, 2025.“It's not reasonable for young women to be talking about mass rape and torture in dark bomb shelters . . . Why do so many men feel like they're dead inside? Modern life is crushing men, disconnecting them from their purpose, their power, and their bodies. In this hard-hitting episode, I sit down with embodiment expert Mark Walsh to explore how men have lost their way—and how they can reclaim their masculine energy, confidence, and sense of meaning. We dive deep into the impact of modernity on men's mental health, the numbing effects of disembodiment, and the simple but powerful practices that can bring men back to life. If you've ever felt lost, uninspired, or stuck in your head, this episode is a wake-up call you won't want to miss. Join me, Mark Walsh, for a deep dive into meaning-making, taken from The Embodiment Festival in January 2025. In this session, I explore why so many of us feel lost in modern life and why meaning seems to be slipping through our fingers. We'll tackle the big questions—how did we get here? Why are birth rates plummeting? Why does hedonism leave us empty? And what did Nietzsche mean when he said, “God is dead”? I'll unpack the four horsemen of the meaning apocalypse—nihilism, narcissism, consumerism, and distraction—and why so many people today struggle to find purpose. But it's not all doom and gloom. I'll also share practical solutions for reconnecting with what really matters—your body, your community, nature, and a deeper sense of purpose. Whether you're questioning everything or just looking for a fresh perspective, this session will challenge your thinking and (hopefully) offer a way forward. ------------------------------------------------------ Check out our YouTube channel for more coaching tips and our Podcast channel for full episode videos Uplevel your coaching with a free copy of Mark's latest eBook, The Top 12 Embodiment Coaching Techniques Join Mark for those juicy in-person workshops and events Fancy some free coaching demo sessions with Mark? A Supreme Court case on medical care for transgender youth could have major ramifications – not only for children who have gender dysphoria and their families but also for how other statutes are reviewed under the Equal Protection Clause. In this episode, Amanda and Holly examine the oral arguments in U.S. v. Skrmetti, breaking down key moments in the heated courtroom exchanges, examining the specific constitutional question in this case, and discussing the broader implications of the possible ruling. While the specific question in this case involves the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment and not the Religion Clauses of the First Amendment, religion and religious arguments often loom large in cases that involve sexual orientation or gender identity. SHOW NOTES Segment 1 (starting at 00:38): The stakes of Skrmetti and the specific question presented For more on the atmosphere surrounding the case, read this piece from Mark Walsh for SCOTUSblog: Inside the Supreme Court arguments on transgender care Visit the website of the National Archives for more information on the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Segment 2 (starting at 07:17): The heated oral arguments The U.S. Supreme Court heard U.S. v. Skrmetti on Dec. 4, 2024. The Supreme Court's website has links to listen to the oral arguments or read a transcript of the arguments. We played four clips from the courtroom: The opening argument of Elizabeth Prelogar, Solicitor General of the United States (from 00:00:10 in the oral argument) A question and statement from Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson (from 01:41:25 in the oral argument) The opening argument of Matthew Rice, Solicitor General for the state of Tennessee (from at 01:45:26 in the oral argument) An exchange between Matthew Rice and Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson (from 02:10:17 in the oral argument) Holly mentioned the Bostock v. Clayton County decision from 2020, which interpreted Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Holly and Amanda discussed the decision in episode 17 of season 1, titled “A landmark case for LGTBQ rights: What's next for religious liberty?” Segment 3 (starting 39:57): Thank you to our listeners Our most-listened to episode in 2024 was episode 21 of season 5, titled “But … is it Christian nationalism?” Respecting Religion is made possible by BJC's generous donors. Jonathan sits down with Fraser Jackson, White House Correspondent for France24, to discuss how French leaders are preparing for Trump's return to power. Plus, in his newest book The Social Paradox, social psychologist William Von Hippel explores the tension between our need for autonomy and our need for connection. Professor Mark Sedgwick joins me for a profound exploration of Traditionalism and its many facets. We dive into the primordial and perennial traditions, unpack why humanity isn't headed for a "Star Trek" future, and discuss key concepts like Kali Yuga, Rene Guenon's influence, and the ongoing meaning crisis. Our conversation touches on Sufism, the sacred underpinnings of modernity, and the often-overlooked roles of racism, caste, and materialism. We also explore New Age beliefs, the pitfalls of ideological extremes, gender dynamics, and the contrast between exoteric and esoteric knowledge. An in-depth, illuminating conversation that challenges modern assumptions. Description: The Embodiment Coaching PodcastA twice-weekly conversational offering for coaches, embodiment teachers and anyone who sees the body as more than a hunk of meat.Embodiment Unlimited hosts Mark Walsh, Karin Van Maan and Christina Dohr interview leaders and innovators from embodied disciplines. Mindfulness, trauma therapy, martial arts, meditation, somatics, yoga, and movement practices generally, are all discussed, with educators, academics and experts from around the world. The flavour is usually light-hearted and practical.Website:www.embodimentunlimited.comTakeaways: The podcast review emphasizes the importance of knowing your podcast's purpose and audience. They mentioned networking but later said they would judge their success by gaining more business. Audio quality is crucial; a muddy introduction can deter potential listeners significantly. All the pre-recorded spots needed improvement. Networking through podcasting can be as valuable as achieving high download numbers. Hosts should strive for engaging dialogue rather than a formal question-answer format. Clear calls to action are essential for directing listeners to your offerings effectively. Using storytelling effectively can enhance listener engagement during interviews and discussions. We both thought things "picked up about 13 minutes when you got to a topic that inspired a little more passion in the guest, and the conversation became a little more conversational and casual. The courage to talk about some topics that people may shy away from was a positive step. People love opinions, and living of fear of upsetting people is no way to live. There is a name for those people, "Not your target audience."The website would look better with the newer version of the Libsyn player. The follow buttons could be a bit more uniform and update date. The website has a lot of options and was organized in a way that kept some white space. There are a fair number of options for navigation, and you might consider moving some of those to a sub-menu to avoid paralysis by analysis.
