What if the key to personal growth wasn't radical transformation—but tiny, consistent experiments? In this full-spectrum conversation, neuroscientist and Ness Labs founder Anne-Laure Le Cunff joins me to explore how to rewire our brains for curiosity, resilience, and sustainable growth. We talk about how our brains are hardwired for safety (and why that gets in the way of change), why embracing uncertainty is a learnable skill, and how to overcome the “insight trap”—where we understand a concept but still fail to appl y it. Anne-Laure shares tools from her book Tiny Experiments, including how to approach daily life more scientifically, balance structure with flexibility, and develop an identity rooted in exploration - not perfection. We also touch on creativity, burnout, goal-setting, and the neuroscience behind procrastination and decision-making. In this solo episode, I dive deep into two key topics: why leaders need embodiment and how embodiment differs from mindfulness. Drawing on 20+ years of experience in the field, I break down why embodied presence—not just information or emotional intelligence—is the make-or-break factor in modern leadership. We explore how embodiment shapes trust, impact, and co-regulation in teams, and why practices like mindfulness, while foundational, aren't the full picture. I also look at the historical and cultural roots of both embodiment and mindfulness, how they overlap, where they diverge, and how to use them skillfully as a coach or leader. ----------------------------------------------- As a special gift for you, our loyal listeners, we are offering $200 off our flagship course, the Certificate of Embodiment Coaching when you use code: CECPOD More info here: https://embodimentunlimited.com/cec ----------------------------------------------- Check out our YouTube channel for more coaching tips and our Podcast channel for full episode videos Uplevel your coaching with a free copy of Mark's latest eBook, The Top 12 Embodiment Coaching Techniques Join Mark for those juicy in-person workshops and events Fancy some free coaching demo sessions with Mark? In this vulnerable and practical episode, I sit down with my colleague Dr. Helen Machen-Pearce to unpack what burnout looks like before it gets dramatic. We talk about the “yellow flags” I've been noticing in my own life, how coaches and leaders can miss early signs, and why it's not just about working less - but working smarter with the nervous system in mind. We also bring in a third voice - ChatGPT - to help spark insights, name patterns, and reflect back what might be hard to see in the moment. It's a fresh format: equal parts real talk, personal story, and practical tools for anyone coaching others or managing their own well-being. If you work with people, teach resilience, or just feel “on the edge” a bit too often—this one's for you. ----------------------------------------------- Our new two-year membership program, Embodied Flourishing, is a supportive and pressure-free space to explore well-being, boundaries, embodiment, and more. We also explore how trauma, belief systems, and even your environment play a massive role in whether your clients follow through… or fall off. Dr Helen Machen-Pearce and I sat down for what we half-jokingly called a “Two Humans and a Robot” episode - because like many of you, we're using AI tools like ChatGPT in our coaching work. But today's real topic is something very human: burnout. We dig into what burnout really looks like, not just the textbook symptoms. Between us we've got decades of coaching, yoga, and life experience, and in this episode, we try to make sense of what's useful out there (including from AI), and what still needs good, embodied, human insight. We cover the signs, subtle stages, and recovery strategies for burnout - and how AI can help (or totally mislead you) when researching this kind of stuff. This one's part real talk, part reflection, and part practical advice for anyone running low on fuel. ----------------------------------------------- Our new two-year membership program, Embodied Flourishing, is a supportive and pressure-free space to explore well-being, boundaries, embodiment, and more. I caught up with my mates from Austin, Brian Robertson and Graham Pilger, the founders of a psychedelic church that defies all the usual stereotypes. We talked about creating spiritual connection without dogma, and how their community uses psychedelics to foster healing, transformation, and real human connection - with a healthy dose of humor. I've done their journeys twice, and they're not culty, not therapy, and not just a trip. We dive into what actually happens at these events, how they're integrating embodiment and trust, and what shifts when you bring your mum along for the ride. Helen brings her background as a psychiatrist and embodiment teacher into the conversation, and we explore how boundaries impact everything from trauma recovery to the ability to live a life aligned with our values. As someone who has lived all over the world, I've had plenty of cross-cultural experiences that shape how I see things. I talk about migration, embodiment, and the nervous system—not just from a personal perspective, but also how these ideas play out in society. Since moving here, a lot has come into focus for me, and this episode is a chance to unpack some of that. ------------------------------------------------------ Check out our YouTube channel for more coaching tips and our Podcast channel for full episode videos Uplevel your coaching with a free copy of Mark's latest eBook, The Top 12 Embodiment Coaching Techniques Join Mark for those juicy in-person workshops and events Fancy some free coaching demo sessions with Mark? Breathwork teacher Jamie Clements joins me for an exploration into the real power of breath. We get into why most people are breathing badly, the science and dogma around breathwork (hello Buteyko and James Nestor), and how breath can be both a tool for healing and a doorway into altered states. We talk trauma — what breathwork can do, what it can't, and the fine line between deep release and emotional performance. There's some solid discussion on men's mental health, breath and sleep, psychedelic breathwork, and the difference between reaching in and reaching out. I'm joined by author and men's work coach Jack Donovan for a deep, honest chat about modern masculinity. We get into why strength matters, how weakness is being sold as virtue, and why the idea that we're all "blank slates" might be doing more harm than good. We talk martial arts, the value of tactical virtues, and what honour really means in a world that often dismisses it. Jack also breaks down the meaning behind “far right” labels, internet culture clashes, and how Nietzsche's ideas can actually help when you're trying to raise strong, grounded boys today. Lots of practical wisdom in this one—whether you're a dad, a mentor, or just figuring out what it means to be a man in 2025. His latest work, Fire in the Dark, dives into mythic masculine roles and introduces his evolving philosophy of Solar Idealism. Christian Pankhurst joins me to pick apart the art of emotional intelligence, group dynamics, and embodied leadership. We explore what it really means to live from “the heart,” how safety and coherence shape authentic connection, and why shadow work (especially the uniquely British kind) is essential for transformation. Christian unpacks the four directions of the heart, the relationship between narcissism and emotional range, and the subtle dance between intensity and connection. From trauma and village-making to mastery, martial arts, and the pitfalls of consumer spirituality—this conversation is both soulful and refreshingly practical. Whether you're a coach, a seeker, or just heart-curious, this one's full of grounded wisdom you can actually use. Ex-Dutch special forces operator turned breathwork coach Wouter Huizer joins me to discuss masculinity, elite performance, and mastering the nervous system. This week's show is with Mark Walsh. Mark has spent the last 20 years helping people get out of their heads and into their bodies—sometimes gracefully, sometimes not. He's the author of The Body in Coaching and Training and Embodied Meditation, and hosts The Embodiment Podcast, which has over 3 million downloads. He also ran The Embodiment Conference, ambitiously featuring 1,000 teachers and half a million attendees, which happened to be the world's largest Zoom event. As the founder of Embodiment Unlimited, Mark has trained over 2,000 embodiment coaches across 40+ countries (some of which still let him back in). His latest project, Feral Philosophy, is a deeper, more unfiltered look at embodiment, free from the usual wellness clichés. His work has taken him from an alcoholic to a psychology graduate; from war zones to boardrooms; from teaching yogis and coaches to working with police and military personnel. He also co-founded Sane Ukraine, now run by Ukrainian professionals to provide trauma and embodiment training for therapists, trainers, and coaches. With a background in psychology, aikido (black belt), and various movement practices—including yoga, meditation, dance, bodywork, and improv comedy—Mark blends deep expertise with a refreshingly direct, down-to-earth style. He's worked with companies like Google, Unilever, and Shell, though he's much happier when he's not wearing a suit. He swears more than most coaches, dances worse than he thinks, and isn't a fan of fluffy self-help talk—but he is passionate about helping people reconnect with themselves in a real, practical way. In this potent and timely conversation, Lian journeys with Mark into the heart of the crisis facing young men today. Together, they explore the four profound disconnections at the root of modern suffering - body, social, ecological, and spiritual - and how restoring these essential connections can guide young men from isolation to purposeful living. Reflecting on Mark's own transformative journey from troubled youth to mentor, they discuss the critical role of strength and embodiment in building resilience, character, and spiritual depth. Mark shares how genuine community and meaningful rites of passage can fill the void left by our culture's forgotten initiations, nurturing the very soul of young men. Drawing from mythological truths, ancient principles, and real-life experiences, Lian and Mark highlight how reconnecting with nature and spirit can profoundly heal both individual lives and wider cultural decay. They illuminate practical pathways for guiding young men back to themselves, toward greater meaning, joy, and wholeness. Ultimately this conversion shines a light on how we might help young men return to themselves, reclaim their inherent value beyond societal expectations in our fractured modern world. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: Physical strength is not merely a superficial pursuit; it is a foundational virtue that creates resilience, self-awareness, and deeper character in young men, providing a doorway to emotional and spiritual growth. In a culture that has largely lost authentic initiation rituals, young men face isolation and confusion - yet re-establishing community, connection to nature, and meaningful mentorship can profoundly alter their trajectory. The modern meaning crisis arises from deep disconnection - body, social, ecological, and spiritual. To heal this, each of us must consciously reconnect, embracing practices that nurture the soul, restoring a sense of genuine meaning and purpose. The Warrior Philosopher joins me for a dive deep into the intersection of philosophy, masculinity, and the struggle for meaning in the modern world. Drawing on Nietzsche, Mishima, and the ideals of the warrior poet, we explore how strength, aesthetics, and discipline shape a life of purpose. We also discuss the alienation of modern men, the consequences of comfort and decadence, and why rediscovering struggle might be the key to a deeper existence. What does it mean to live with virtue? How do we balance strength and beauty? And is there still a place for aristocratic values in a world obsessed with mediocrity? Ep. 171 (Part 2 of 2) | An emotionally powerful and deeply inspiring conversation with renowned embodiment and trauma educator Mark Walsh from the U.K. and Ukrainian psychologist and trauma trainer Kristina Obluchynska, where we learn about effective ways of treating trauma in the middle of an ongoing war, what trauma therapists are left holding, and how beautiful is the human spirit when it embraces right action. When Russia commenced its full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago, Mark went to Ukraine, located willing psychology students, educated them in body-oriented trauma therapy and training, and with Kristina and several other trainees co-founded Sane Ukraine, with the urgent mission of preventing an epidemic of trauma disorders in Ukraine. Beginning with applying trauma first aid and teaching resilience skills in places like the local railroad station where people were coming in from the front lines, and in bomb shelters, Kristina and several other psychologists have now educated thousands of people about trauma—active duty soldiers, veterans, survivors, wives of combatants, and first-line responders such as doctors, teachers, and social workers—and trained hundreds of them to become trauma trainers themselves. It is an honor to bear witness to Mark's courageous actions and the humble heroism of Kristina and her team in the face of the devastation being leveled on Ukraine and Ukrainians. “We don't grieve,” Kristina tells us, “because grief comes after safety. We don't even use the word safe anymore,” she continues, “only relatively safe.” Mark points out that modern warfare is not just running around with guns—drones hunt civilians and if you move, they kill you. “Do we all have PTSD?” the soldiers ask. With Sane Ukraine, there is someone to answer their questions and teach them what they can do to help themselves and each other. Resilience comes from relationship—from connection to self, others, nature, and spirit. Does the concept of post traumatic growth even apply considering the intensity of this war? co-host Roger wonders. Today I welcome two previous guests from earlier this season to share their unique experiences and expertise on the topic of vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue. Mark Walsh, an embodiment coach, trauma trainer & host of The Embodiment Podcast, and Christian Branscombe, a restorative justice facilitator and coach. Together we dive into the intricacies of vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue, especially in the contexts of working in prisons and war-torn Ukraine. The two of them share experience to help us delve into the ways self-awareness, self-compassion, and structured self-care practices are crucial for managing compassion fatigue. The conversation also touches on the psychological impacts of trauma, the importance of maintaining boundaries, and the role of spirituality and humor in coping with intense and challenging work settings. This conversation on managing the impacts of trauma in high-stress careers and situations may come as some comfort for you as the world around us changes. 00:00 Introduction to the Guests and Episode Overview 01:39 Discussing Vicarious Trauma and Compassion Fatigue 03:02 Personal Experiences and Coping Mechanisms 07:13 Training and Self-Regulation Practices 17:32 Spirituality and Self-Awareness in Trauma Work 23:27 Challenges and Strategies in Prison Environments 32:13 Exploring Somatic Models 32:44 Understanding Emotional Resonance 34:28 Challenges in the Prison System 35:10 Trauma and Re-traumatization 39:26 The Power of Ideas and Hope 47:09 Connection and Well-being 54:01 Self-Care and Boundaries 55:01 Conclusion and Contact Information
Ep. 170 (Part 1 of 2) | An emotionally powerful and deeply inspiring conversation with renowned embodiment and trauma educator Mark Walsh from the U.K. and Ukrainian psychologist and trauma trainer Kristina Obluchynska, where we learn about effective ways of treating trauma in the middle of an ongoing war, what trauma therapists are left holding, and how beautiful is the human spirit when it embraces right action. At the end of this extraordinary, heartfelt conversation, when asked what we could do to help, Kristina advises, “Help the army. We are talking here about healing, but what we really need is to survive.” Recorded January 9, 2025.“There is nothing that can prepare human psychology for modern warfare.”Topics & Time Stamps – Part 1Introducing Mark Walsh, trauma trainer, author, founder & CEO of Embodiment Unlimited, and Kristina Obluchynska, clinical psychologist & trauma therapist, who together co-founded Sane Ukraine to provide training in trauma therapy and resilience skills to professionals, soldiers, combatants' families and more (01:03)What compelled Mark to get involved in Ukraine and found Sane Ukraine? Philosopher Nancy Sherman joins me to unpack Stoicism - what people often misunderstand about it, and what's really worth taking away. We dive into Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and how ancient wisdom still speaks to modern practices like CBT. Nancy shares insights on moral injury, PTSD, and the dynamics of resilience in relationships, alongside Aristotle's virtue ethics and the golden mean. We also talk about the tension between academics and popularisers, why wisdom isn't just something you study but something you practice, and the lasting influence of figures like Ryan Holiday and Jim Stockdale. It's a lively conversation full of fresh perspectives and deep dives into what philosophy means in everyday life.
