382 Images of Ourselves It's a sad fact of life that we internalize narratives that are made for us at an early age, we are told we are too emotional, that we're too bossy, that we're too big, and if we do not actively try to reframe or unlearn these narratives made for us, we are forced to live out a story someone else made up for us. It is our duty to reach out and take the power back for ourselves, to wield the pen as a mighty sword, and write our own narrative for the sake of our growth and inner peace. In today's episode Sarah Elkins and Lindsey A. Lee, discuss the importance of becoming the person you want to be, showing up for yourself and those you love, and how vital it is for our growth as human beings to sit with the narratives we have about ourselves and decide for ourselves if these narratives are our own genuine thoughts and beliefs or if they were a planted idea. Highlights Is the person you became, the person you wanted to be or the person you needed to be to survive? How do you show up for the people who need you? What stories and perceptions from others are you still holding onto? Quotes “My greatest performance was pretending to be okay.” “There was emotion in my home, it just didn't look like mine. It looked like yelling, fighting, and shutdowns.” Dear Listeners it is now your turn, The thing that I want to ask you, you remember every time at the end of these conversations I'm asking you to consider something for yourselves. My dear friend Netty Owens asked me one time: What is the object in your image of yourself that you would like to hold on to? And I talked about the Hanukkiah, the Jewish candelabra that we use for Hanukkah. And there's one candle that's separated from the rest, so there are 9 holders, 8 for the 8 nights of Hanukkah, and the one is the leader candle or the Shamash. That candle is the one we light first, we say the first prayer and then we light all the other candles with that candle. And I like to think of myself as a Shamash, someone who knows that by lighting other candles I am in no way diminishing my own light and that when we light other candles we bring more light. And for that brief moment when we connect like Lindsey and I did, for two and a half minutes our flames were together which made that an entwined hyper bright flame, even for that one moment, and it changes the energy and dynamic in a room. Guaranteed. So I am asking you listeners, what is your image of yourself? Just like Lindsey wants to be radiant and exudes that radiance when she owns that language, what will be yours? And, as always, thank you for listening. About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Storytelling For Professionals Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!

Hanukkah is Hebrew for "dedication" – and dedication as service to God and to Humankind is role-modeled for us by Messiah Yeshua, who was "The Light of The World" – and urged us as His followers to live as "lights to the world" and to "shine in the darkness."
Hanukkah reading for the believer Hebrew Roots helps us to place the candle in the position reserved for the Shamash (the servant candle which is set appart from the other eight candles by being elevated.) Place another candle in the holder on the far right of the menorah. Light the Shamash and as you do say: "Yeshua said: I am the light of the world." Recite the following: "Blessed are you O Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified our lives through His Commandments, and has allowed us to kindle the Hanukkah lights." Numbers 7:1-17, Genesis 1:1-5, 14-18, Psalm 30, John 10:22-42

halacha
Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
The Shulhan Aruch rules (671:5) that one must light an additional candle, called a Shamash, alongside the other Hanukah candles. This insures that any benefit one may receive from the light of the Menorah, in essence, is derived only from that extra candle, and it is therefore permitted. However, the Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) cites the Kab HaYashar who holds that even the Shamash may not be benefitted from. Hacham Ovadia adamantly rejects this and explains that the entire purpose of the Shamash is to benefit from its light. The Be'ur Halacha (Rav Yisrael Meir Kagan of Radin, 1839-1933) brings Rashi's explanation that a Shamash is lit for a "HeKera"-to distinguish. That is, it is designed to demonstrate that the candles are lit for the Misva, and the other candle, the Shamash, is for light. Even if he does not need to use the light of a candle, he must show that he has other options if the need would arise. Accordingly, he continues, since the Menorah is no longer lit on the table, but rather by the windows or doors, it is clear that the lighting is for the Misva. Therefore, technically, there would be no need for the Shamash. All the more so today, the use of electric lights shows that the Hanukah lights are only for the Misva and not for light. Nevertheless, he concludes that the prevalent custom is that everyone lights an additional candle. There is a significant difference between the way Ashkenazim and Sepharadim use the Shamash. The Ashkenazim use the Shamash to light the other candles, and since it is used to serve the other candles, it is clearly not one of the Hanukah lights. Sepharadim, on the other hand, use candles to light the Shamash, and therefore it is not evident that the Shamash is not one the Hanukah candles. Therefore, one should put the Shamash higher, lower or off to the side of the other candles to show that the Shamash is not part of the Hanukah candles. The Be'ur Halacha (Siman 673) points out another difference between the Sepharadim and the Ashkenazim. According to the Sepharadim, even though the Shamash is lit, one may not benefit from the candles; he may only use the light of the Shamash. Per the Ashkenazim, the Rama rules that through the lighting of the Shamash, all the candles become permitted to benefit from. In any event, it is best to refrain from benefiting from the Menorah. Benefit refers to practical uses such as reading and counting money, but it is permitted to gaze at the candle to derive aesthetic pleasure. SUMMARY One must light a Shamash, even if he has electric lights. One should refrain from benefiting from the Menorah but may benefit from the Shamash. The Shamash should be placed in a different position than the rest of the candles.

The Moon is in a sort of cosmic balance tonight. It's passing through Libra, the balance scales — the only constellation of the zodiac that doesn't represent a living thing. But the scales are associated with two living things — Virgo, which represents a goddess, and Scorpius, the scorpion. In various cultures of the Mediterranean, the stars of Libra were attached to one or both of those figures. In ancient Babylon, the stars represented a scale held by Shamash, the Sun god. He was also the god of truth and justice. The scales helped him maintain a “balance” on Earth and in the heavens. And there may have been an astronomical reason for thinking of the stars of Libra as “in balance.” Until about 2700 years ago, the Sun passed across those stars at the fall equinox — a time when day and night are roughly the same length — they're in balance. Libra also was identified as the claws of the scorpion, which is on the opposite side of the constellation. The names of Libra's brightest stars still reflect that heritage: Zubeneschamali, the northern claw, and Zubenelgenubi, the southern claw, which is quite close to the Moon tonight. The Greeks maintained the connection to both the gods and the scorpion. Libra wasn't depicted as a separate constellation until a couple of thousand years ago, in Rome. Yet it maintains the links to its heritage — the scales of justice, and the claws of the scorpion. Script by Damond Benningfield

Part 1: The Remarkable Shamash Who Impressed Baruch Considerably
Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
The Halacha states that a Beracha of Shehakol recited on a beverage will continue to exempt the drinking of that beverage throughout the day. For example, if a person is sitting in the Bet Midrash with a cup of coffee or tea, sipping the drink as he learns, occasionally refilling his cup, the one Beracha of Shehakol recited in the morning will cover the drinking of the entire day. The Poskim discuss whether this is true even if he waits "the time of digestion"-i.e. 72 minutes (or 90 minutes) in between drinks. Does such a hiatus sever the connection to the original Beracha, or is the Shehakol still "alive"? The Magen Abraham (Rav Abraham Gombiner, Poland, 1637-1682) rules that the original Beracha has expired, and he must make a new Beracha. The Kaf HaHayim testified that this was the custom in the Yeshivat Mekubalim Bet El.On the other hand, other Poskim such as the Ginat Vradim and the Erech Hashulhan disagree. They hold that the time lapse does not nullify the original Beracha, as long as the person did not mentally decide to stop drinking. The Saba Kadisha Alfandari concurred with this position and argued that the fact that the practice in Yeshivat Bet El was different does not mean that this is the conclusive Halacha. There is at least a "Safek Beracha"-uncertainty in the Halacha, which is resolved by not saying a new Beracha. The custom used to be that during a Ta'anit Dibur, in which the Tehilim is recited three times, the Shamash would bring coffee before beginning chapter 119, which is the longest chapter. After drinking the coffee, they would continue saying Tehilim until, two hours later, they would reach chapter 119 again. According to the Magen Abraham, they would need to recite a new Beracha on the second round of coffee, whereas, according to the Saba Kadisha, they would not.Hacham Ovadia rules in accordance with the Saba Kadisha that one should not make a new Shehakol if a long time elapsed, since it is a Safek Berachot. Rabbi Bittan suggests avoiding this uncertainty by leaving the building briefly before the next cup. This generates a Shinui Makom and requires a new Shehakol according to all opinions. This is not considered making a "Beracha She'enah Sriha"-unnecessary Beracha- since it is done for the legitimate purpose of alleviating a Halachic doubt. Alternatively, one can employ "Negative Kavana" and explicitly intend that the original Shehakol only exempt the first cup. In that case, he would need to make a new Beracha on a second cup, even before an hour and a half.SUMMARYThe original Beracha of Shehakol remains in effect, even if a long time elapsed between drinks, and no new Beracha is needed.

The Ninevite version of the epic begins with a prologue in praise of Gilgamesh, part divine and part human, the great builder and warrior, knower of all things on land and sea. In order to curb Gilgamesh's seemingly harsh rule, the god Anu causes the creation of Enkidu, a wild man who at first lives among animals. Soon, however, Enkidu is initiated into the ways of city life and travels to Uruk, where Gilgamesh awaits him. Tablet II describes a trial of strength between the two men in which Gilgamesh is the victor; thereafter, Enkidu is the friend and companion (in Sumerian texts, the servant) of Gilgamesh. In Tablets III–V the two men set out together against Huwawa (Humbaba), the divinely appointed guardian of a remote cedar forest, but the rest of the engagement is not recorded in the surviving fragments. In Tablet VI Gilgamesh, who has returned to Uruk, rejects the marriage proposal of Ishtar, the goddess of love, and then, with Enkidu's aid, kills the divine bull that she sends to destroy him. Tablet VII begins with Enkidu's account of a dream in which the gods Anu, Ea, and Shamash decide that Enkidu must die for slaying the bull. Enkidu then falls ill and dreams of the “house of dust” that awaits him. Gilgamesh's lament for his friend and the state funeral of Enkidu are narrated in Tablet VIII. Afterward, Gilgamesh makes a dangerous journey (Tablets IX and X) in search of Utnapishtim, the survivor of the Babylonian Flood, in order to learn from him how to escape death. When he finally reaches Utnapishtim, Gilgamesh is told the story of the Flood and is shown where to find a plant that can renew youth (Tablet XI). But after Gilgamesh obtains the plant, it is seized and eaten by a serpent, and Gilgamesh returns, still mortal, to Uruk. An appendage to the epic, Tablet XII, relates the loss of objects called pukku and mikku (perhaps “drum” and “drumstick”) given to Gilgamesh by Ishtar. The epic ends with the return of the spirit of Enkidu, who promises to recover the objects and then gives a grim report on the underworld.

Shamash Alidina is a mindfulness and ACT trainer. And is also the author of mindfulness for dummies. ACT stands for acceptance and commitment therapy and in this episode of the podcast Shamash shares some of the principles of ACT and how they can help us cultivate more resilience and self-compassion in our lives. In summary the key principles of ACT are: Be present Open up Do what matters By following these principles we're more able to make conscious choices and overcome any challenges we face because of them. Most of the time there are no wrong or right choices. There are just choices and repercussions. If we believe that we're able to deal with any repercussions then it becomes much easier to make choices. It's when we find ourselves unable to make choices that we get stuck. We also talk to Shamash about how pain and purpose are two sides of the same coin. And how doing something meaningful usually mean that it's also going to be challenging. We talk about how achieving goals and living our values affect our sense of happiness and meaning. As well as the pressure we put ourselves under to always be happy, particularly in our community. Being happy all the time isn't really the point. Particularly if we criticise ourselves for not being so. If you're an entrepreneur or you're starting a new project or venture and you're wondering if you'll be able to overcome all the difficulties and challenges that will inevitably come your way then I recommend you listen to this episode. Because there are a few nuggets of wisdom that Shamash will share with you that will help you cultivate the resilience and resourcefulness you need. Nowadays we tend to give Shamash, the Mesopotamian sun god, a bit less respect than he is probably due. After all, for modern folk, the category of "sun god" is the height of pagan foolishness. After all, why would anyone worship an object which has been held in common by all humans throughout all of history, whose power is so great that even with modern advanced science we still can't touch it, and which is literally the ultimate source of all life on the planet? But even among sun gods, Shamash takes on a character of his own, becoming more than just a guy carrying a big ball of fire, or maybe just being the big ball of fire, and becoming a stand in for the cosmic order itself, something that was hugely important in the ancient world. Today we look at how he was worshipped, mostly in the words of his actual worshippers. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/oldeststories/message

Shamash, who was also known as Utu, was a Babylonian sun god who was regarded as the god of justice, truth, and morality. He was also the twin of Inanna, who was the Queen of Heaven. Shamash had several temples in the cities of Sippar and Larsa. According to Babylonian mythology, the god rode through the heavens in the Sun Chariot and was an enforcer of divine justice who was believed to see all that happened in the day. He was also believed to have appeared to Ziusudra after the Great Flood in the epic Giglamesh.Throughout The Epic of Gilgamesh, Utu/Shamash is noted for his kindness and diligence in watching over the hero and, for this reason, came to be regarded as the patron god of travelers and vagabonds. He also became associated with the highest of the gods and even the benefactor of the gods, who provided them with a home.In the Babylonian literature, Shamash was described as having a long beard and was depicted as an old man with a long-arm. In art, he is shown emerging from Heaven at dawn and riding across the sky in his chariot. He was also believed to go back to the interior of Heaven through the western doors at night.Shamash is shown as wielding his weapons such as the pruning saw and a double edges saw with jagged teeth which represented his role as the god of justice. Shamash also had a solar disc, which had four cardinal points and four parallel lines originating from the centre.Read more at https://mythlok.com/shamash/

In this episode, Sima shares how she was able to both be aware of, and awaken from her suppressed feminine self. She discovered how an awakened masculine can allow a feminine to heal. She cites her personal thoughts, experiences, and learnings about the community's mentality that feminine normally means submissive and subtle. So much came up to the conversation and it shows that when the masculine can show up in a way of holding space for a woman to feel protected and provided, that woman blossoms. And when a woman blossoms, that wisdom, love and nourishment in turn blossoms a man. Understanding better what needs to be healed makes the process becomes enjoyable. The truth is we live in this world of many differences, and the test for us will be how we learn how to get to love and grow out of those differences.
