You may have heard about the health benefits of being kind. Not only can it lower blood pressure, and boost immunity. It can also positively alter your relationship with yourself, which piqued my interest for those of us who've spent decades driving ourselves relentlessly. Is kindfulness a solution to feelings of not-enoughness?  Dr David Hamilton is a speaker, columnist, and author of twelve books, including his most recent, The Joy of Actually Giving a F*ck. He's delivered kindness sessions for Google, Bank of England, the NHS, and many others.  In this episode, David and I discuss “kind genes”, how mindfulness doesn't help everyone to be kinder, and rethinking what success can feel like. Join us as we explore the transformative power of "Big Picture" thinking in relationships, emphasizing how it brings freedom, energy, and confidence. We challenge the outdated notion of putting "work" into relationships and advocate for redirecting focus towards investing "energy" into connections. Any relationship tip or activity, such as a date night, is not a fundamental piece of human relationships- it's a detail which allows you to personalize your relationship based on what fills up your unique CAKE pieces—Communication, Affection, Kindfulness, and Energy. The CAKE acronym serves as a guide, breaking down essential elements of human connections. Communication involves the exchange of messages, Affection focuses on the giving, receiving, and growth of love actions, Kindfulness emphasizes being mindful and kind in interactions, and Energy addresses the importance of managing and replenishing energy in relationships. Tune in to discover how these big picture ideas and the CAKE framework can enhance your relationship dynamics and foster a more fulfilling connection.

Welcome to The Academic Life. You are smart and capable, but you aren't an island, and neither are we. In this episode you'll hear about: the importance of listening to yourself—even if that means leaving one grad school program to enter one in a totally different field, the difference between meditation and mindfulness, why silent meditation can be so challenging, and how to develop a meditation practice that has enough flexibility to work for you. At the end of this episode, Lori leads us in a 10 minute guided meditation. Our guest is: Lori Snyder, a meditation and yoga teacher, and a professional writer who founded the Writers Happiness Movement. Lori lives with her husband and her cat near the beach outside LA, all of which she loves. Your host is: Dr. Christina Gessler, a historian of women, gender, and sexuality. He replied that he wanted to know how to manipulate atoms at a distance, with thought alone. It was then that I woke up to muse on how to do this in a safe and non-telekinetic way.

This week, we join up with the lovely Gemma Sandwell to see how mindfulness with kindfulness helps us access and grow our resilience. I first met Gemma a few years ago, not in person but over the speaker in a large auditorium in the centre of the city in London - she was leading a Resilience Shot for a group of financial services leaders - a short mindfulness exercise, introducing the art of focussing on the present moment, to help build resilience. So, who could be better placed to talk to us today about how mindfulness helps us build resilience?!The next time I met Gemma, we were both coaching leadership teams and happened to have been put into joining rooms - that conversation is what led to me realising how lovely she is & I'm so delighted to welcome her onto the podcast.Gemma is a Mindfulness Teacher, Positive Psychology Practitioner, ICF accredited coach and TEDx speaker. She's been on a journey of personal self-discovery through these tools and they lead her to setting up the Happiness Branch, helping people to flourish. Gemma uses the practice of mindfulness combined with Positive Psychology. She sees them as core tools to help you be at your best and perform at your best, building on what works for you already, in a non-judgemental way, decreasing stress and anxiety. In this session, you'll hear more of the work Gemma does and why it's so beneficial - and you'll be led through a beautiful mindful meditation, which almost relaxed me so much that I couldn't complete the recording! At the end of the session I share a wonderful piece of film I first came across a few years ago, when on retreat with Soulshine. A recording of Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues, talking about the importance of Loving Your Tree. When you hear Gemma's session, you'll understand why it resonated. I've included a link to it below - I think you'll enjoy it!I hope you enjoy this recording - you can watch or listen to it as a podcast, links below. In a world full of negative news compounded and inflated by politicians, the media, and online trolls—we all need to slow down, stop, and just be from time to time. To reconnect and yes, be happy. This week’s guest Shamash Alidina is that ray of light, that beacon of hope. Author of Mindfulness for Dummies and Relaxation for Dummies,Shamash has many years’ experience as a mindfulness teacher, trainer, coach, and worldwide speaker—having trained with Jon Kabbat Zinn, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Mattieu Ricard. In this wonderful and joyous episode Shamash talks of Kindfulness, the discovery and cultivation of kindness towards your own self and the difference it has on your life, and The Museum Of Happiness that he co-founded with Vicky Johnson to help everyone find deep happiness through experiential adventure. This may well be the most important podcast you ever listen to. This is Your London Legacy.  “The idea is to help social enterprises and other businesses remember that values come first. Yeah, you do need to make a profit but if that becomes too much of the focus then you kind of lose your way.” 7:00 Shamash had a bit of a revelation his first summer while attending university. He was excited to be working as an engineer and making money, actual money he could spend on things and be happy. Then the moment came when he went shopping in Oxford Street, and there was just a sense of emptiness, no fulfillment at all. Funnily enough, he saw a poster on the tube with a quote from Socrates and decided to jump into a philosophy class—and Shamash has never looked back, and now tries not to stare too far into the future either. He practices mindfulness and living in the moment.  “Right now is the highest spread of wealth in the world, lowest chance of dying of disease when young—violence on the planet is at the lowest level it’s ever been…however, the worst time to be born for mental health challenges is right now.” 20:30 While visiting his brother in NYC, Shamash came about googling books on mindfulness and didn’t find hardly any at all. After a quick fill in contact form with the “Dummies” series of information books, he quickly found himself contracted to write Mindfulness for Dummies. This launched a point where he switched to teaching and writing about mindfulness for a living – a journey that started on a one-on-one basis all the way to his “pop up” Museum of Happiness going viral on Facebook and kicking off a whole series of events focused on happiness.  Shamash is focused on spreading his teachings of mindfulness and Kindfulness—a concept that focuses on discovering and cultivating kindness towards yourself and the difference it has on your life. There are a wealth of resources on Shamash’s website such as ebooks and trainings, and I highly encourage you to head over to Twitter (https://twitter.com/London_Podcast) and you’ll be entered to grab a copy!  Links Mindfulness for Dummies (https://www.shamashalidina.com/books) ACT Training (https://www.shamashalidina.com/act) Support this podcast

The ancient meditation known as the ‘the magical practice of taking and giving’ is a profound method to:   transform our suffering into a tool to help others purify our negative karma make our mind strong and resilient  develop universal compassion eventually attain enlightenment   In this episode, we learn how to do this practice formally, seated, as well as in daily life. This practice can be done with our eyes open, whenever we see someone suffering. It can help us make our own suffering meaningful and easier to bear, and even purify the karmic causes of it.    Practicing what one shouldn’t,  Not practicing what one should,  Having abandoned the goal,  Clinging to what is dear,  One comes to envy those who practice. To bring more joy and lessen the stress in our lives, we can turn to the practice of kindfulness. Mindfulness, the conscious awareness of our thoughts and intentions, tuned into ways to be kind to others is ‘kindfulness.’ First coined by the monk Ajahn Brahm, kindfulness is a gentle way to more align our life with the law of karma. According to the law of karma, every act of kindness creates the cause for our own future happiness. Being kind usually makes us feel pretty good in the moment too!  Research also indicates that kindness has many good effects on our heath and even slows the aging process! Dr David Hamilton, author of The Five Side-Effects Of Kindness, says, “Being kind generates the “kindness” hormone oxytocin, which also happens to be a major cardiovascular hormone. It keeps the arteries clear and lowers blood pressure by reducing levels of harmful free radicals and inflammation, which cause disease. These are also the main culprits for causing ageing to our cells, so you could also say that kindness slows the ageing process.” Tasting the flavor  Of solitude and peace, One becomes free of distress and evil, Drinking the flavor of Dharma joy. (Verse 205) —Buddha, The Dhammapada References Buddha. The Dhammapada, translated by Gil Fronsdale. (2011). Shambala, pp. 54. Carlyle, R. (2018, May 20). Kindfulness: It’s the new twist on mindfulness — being consciously kind to others. The best thing? It’s good for you, too. Caroline Millington and I have been friends for 20 years. We studied for our postgrad in Features Journalism together in London, and since then she gone to write for some of the best known magazines to grace the shelves of the newsagent, before moving behind the scenes in television. Most recently Caroline's become an author. Her first book, Kindfulness, is about recognising that you're not a robot but a gloriously imperfect human. Her second book, which was published recently, is The Friendship Formula, and is all about… friendship. We got together for a catchup, to talk about writing books, finding yourself, and lots more besides in this rambling episode of my podcast. We go all over the place with this one, so I hope it's as much fun to listen to as it was to record. Her books, published by Head of Zeus, are in any decent bookshop or on Amazon.
