"Hey Lifeguard, are there sharks out there?!" Dr. Chris Lowe, a distinguished figure in marine biology and the Director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach. He brings over 35 years of expertise in studying sharks, rays, and bony fishes, focusing on their behavior, physiology, and ecology. For the past 15 years, he and his students have delved into the world of juvenile white sharks along the southern California coast. How a mathematician placed in the top 10 three times in Draft Kings Million Dollar Challenge. Adam Burns is the creator and founder of DFS Army's Shark Lab and the acclaimed Shark Chronicles. He got his start in the Daily Fantasy Sports industry during the 2011-2012 NFL season. Since the end of the 2015 NFL season, he has been a DFS Army staff member. During this time, he originated the site's Research Station for MLB and NFL, the WR vs. CB, and the O-Line/D-Line charts. In Season 10: Episode 8 of Beach Weekly, host Lei Madrigal covers the latest stories on campus and around the world. The Center for Equitable Higher Education on the Long Beach State campus works to reduce homelessness among CSU students through their Rapid Rehousing program which provides short-term assistance before helping students find permanent housing. To learn more about assistance programs offered through the university, students can visit the Student Basic Needs Center on the first floor of the student union. This year's intense storms have had some serious impacts on the Long Beach State University campus. The Shark Lab, a research group on campus that studies white sharks, lost $76,000 worth of equipment. The Walter Pyramid also experienced damage from the severe weather. A leak in the pyramid's roof is expected to cost $55 million to repair. The governor of Tennessee recently signed a bill that bans drag shows in public spaces. The new law will go into effect on April 1 right before Pride month in June when outdoor Pride activities are usually held outside because of the summer heat. After a 6-year-old boy in Virginia used his mother's handgun to shoot his teacher on Jan. 6 of this year, authorities have determined that the child will not be facing criminal charges for the incident. Four Americans from South Carolina were kidnapped when they accidentally got caught up in cartel violence in Mexico. Two of the four were killed in this gunfire. After the FBI located the Americans in an outskirt city, the two survivors along with the bodies of those who were killed were brought back to the U.S. Russia is now hitting Ukraine with much stronger missiles than ever before called hypersonic missiles that are nearly unstoppable. Ukraine is struggling to defend itself against these new weapons. So far, the missiles have caused at least 6 civilian deaths in the western region of the country. A Long Beach aerospace company is looking to launch the world's first 3D-printed rocket into space. While the company's original rocket launch was planned for Wed., March 8, it has since been rescheduled because of problems with the rocket's liquid natural gas fuel. A man from Huntington Beach has set a new world record for most consecutive visits to Disneyland by going to the park every day for 8 years, 3 months, and 16 days. This episode of the Podcast is a conversation with Tristan Guttridge a biologist with a passion for sharks, in fact he describes himself as a shark fanatic. With a PhD in Behavioural Ecology, based on research he undertook at the Shark Lab in Bimini, Bahamas, Tristan has many strings to his bow as he advocates for greater understanding and protection of sharks. In addition to continued shark research, Tristan has become a well-known presenter on Discovery Channels, and I worked with him in March 2021 for a programme for Discovery Shark Week 2021. With his wife, Annie, Tristan has also founded a non-profit called Save the Blue, which enables volunteers to learn more about shark research aswell as providing education programmes for schoolchildren in the Bahamas. Much of his work is based in the waters around Andros Island in the Bahamas, a uniquely pristine barrier reef environment with a trench of very deep water, the Tongue of the Ocean, directly alongside and a huge area of protected marine reserve. We had a very intense shoot schedule, including multiple night shoots and dives, but we were able to have a conversation on the final day while we were packing to leave. It was a really fantastic experience to do an interview live and face-to-face for the first time. I learnt a lot about sharks and Tristan's enthusiasm is infectious. Support this podcast

Can a drone help better understand sharks? Jay Seidel is a journalism professor and media adviser at Fullerton College. He also oversees the Fullerton College Drone Technology program and is the coordinator of the Fullerton College Drone Lab. The Fullerton Drone Lab teaches students to become better and safer pilots, prepares them for the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification exam and provides hands on learning opportunities on the use drones in various industries.  In 2019, the Lab partnered with the Shark Lab housed at California State University in Long Beach to capture and provide data by drones on sharks. The goal of the Shark Lab’s study to quantify recreational water use along Southern California beaches, advance the knowledge of white shark-human interaction behaviors, and assess the risk associated with marine recreation. Prior to becoming a teacher in 2005, Jay worked for 12 years as a writer and editor for various publications, including the Los Angeles Times and Popular Hot Rodding. He earned his master’s degree in communications from Cal State University, Fullerton.  And he served 11 years in the U.S. Army and California Army National Guard where he worked as an engineer and photojournalist.  In this edition of the Drone Radio Show, Jay talks about the Fullerton College Drone Lab, collaboration with the Shark Lab to help better understand marine habitats.
