Beaches around Australia are at risk of disappearing with climate change resulting in severe weather systems that lash up and down the coastline and erode the landscape. From Newcastle in New South Wales, to Wyomi on the Limestone Coast in South Australia, to Inverloch in Victoria - are all trying different ways to hold back the power of the ocean. So what can be done about it? And who is responsible for fixing a growing problem. And importantly who is responsible for footing the bill? 

The story of wealth across Britain has, until recently, been a straightforward one – decades of rising prices, benefiting those lucky enough to own assets. But that story has been upended in the past few years as interest rates rocketed off their historically low levels in response to the highest inflation in decades. Britain needs to look again at the size and distribution of household wealth, and people's ability to become wealthier. What happened to household wealth during the pandemic? What has that meant for wealth inequality? Were some families financially vulnerable even before the cost of living crisis? To what extent do people become more or less wealthy over time? And how does wealth mobility – or the lack thereof – affect people's lifetime living standards? We're at an interesting and dynamic point in time for immigration law, with Supreme Court rulings and presidential executive orders reshaping the field and challenging the system's status quo.  The administrative area of immigration law is especially difficult for legal professionals. In an immigration hearing, the judge is essentially on the same “team” as the prosecutor, and because immigration policies are largely under the federal executive branch, the rules seem to shift every four years with a new presidential term.  Guest Nikki Mehrpoo is a former judge, a scholar, and the first and only California dual certified legal specialist in immigration and Workers' Compensation law. She is a lawyer as well as a professor of law at West Los Angeles College. But beyond ready-made images of exoticism and squalor, we know surprisingly little about its history and the people who call it home. Shifting Sands is about that other Sahara, not the empty wasteland of the romantic imagination but the vast and highly differentiated space in which Saharan peoples and, increasingly, new arrivals from other parts of Africa live, work, and move.
