America's housing affordability crisis is a well-documented reality not just in gentrifying cities but in virtually every corner of this nation. The persistence of the problem is particularly frustrating because we have proven policy solutions in hand, largely generated by nonprofits and community leaders. What is lacking is full-on political will at the federal level to break through barriers and make housing an accessible and affordable resource. Community Land Trusts, which have deep roots across the globe, were put on the map in the United States by civil rights icons Charles and Shirley Sherrod. Their founding of New Communities in Albany, Georgia, motivated by the violent displacement of Black farmers from their land and informed by their time on kibbutzim in Israel, galvanized a modern movement for the communal stewardship of land and housing whose affordability is permanent. In this episode of Power Station, Tony Pickett, CEO of Grounded Solutions Network, a powerdul cohort of CLT leaders, shares his own experience in the field and calls on philanthropy and government to make robust investments in a model, based in shared equity, that uplifts all communities. Hear him. His work and words are compelling and hopeful.

Shirley Sherrod has been advocating for civil rights since 1965. This week, our host Ron gets help from Michael Sligh, longtime friend and fellow farm advocate, in interviewing Shirley about discrimination in ag. The second part of this episode features Shirley at the 2017 Domestic Fair Trade Conference. She discusses 52 years of work, including black land loss, the connection between civil rights and food justice, and the importance of racial justice in creating fair and sustainable agricultural supply chains, and more. Shirley was born in Baker County, Georgia, in 1947 to Grace and Hosea (Hosie) Miller. Her father was murdered by a white farmer reportedly over a dispute about livestock. No charges were ever returned against the shooter by an all-white grand jury. The tragic murder of her father when she was 17 years old had a profound impact on her life and led to her decision to stay in the south to work for change. She attended Fort Valley State College for two years and then transferred to Albany State College. There she studied sociology while also working for civil rights with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). During this time, she married Reverend Charles Sherrod, one of the founding members of SNCC and the leader of SNCC's work in southwest Georgia. During the 1960s, Shirley and her husband helped form New Communities, Inc. The organization acquired 6,000 acres of land and became the first community land trust in the U.S. The project encountered difficulties in the opposition of area white farmers who accused participants of being communists, and also from Georgia's segregationist governor, Lester Maddow, who prevented the federal government's development funds from entering the state. A drought in the 1970s, fertilizer suppliers selling inferior products to the organization, and the inability to get timely government loans led to the project's ultimate demise. Shirley went on to work for the Federation of Southern Cooperatives in 1985 to help black farmers keep their land. In July 2010, she was forced to resign her position at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) after conservative blogger, Andrew Breitbart, posted video excerpts on his website of an address she gave at a NAACP event. According to Breitbart, her comments showed how a federally appointed executive racially discriminated against a white farmer. The video set off a storm of controversy and criticism of Shirley. Subsequent events showed that the posted video was taken out of context and part of broader comments that conveyed a completely different meaning. The NAACP apologized for critical comments and her boss at USDA also apologized while offering her another job, which she later declined. The interview was conducted on Dec. 15, 2017. Today's episode looks at changes and pressures being felt in Montana communities, and the importance of community involvement in navigating how this change can occur in a sustainable way. Changes are nothing new for Montana communities, but as you listen to residents from around the state, they know that the changes currently taking place, are a bit more ramped up than before. Trends of folks with higher, out-of-state incomes, moving into Montana have been on the rise for decades, but with the pandemic, these trends are amplified. As housing prices skyrocket, working class local residents are unable to afford to stay, making many towns, large and small, feel pressures in their own sustainability. We will hear from Pat Baltzley of Gardiner, MT, who joined other community members to be proactive with the felt pressures of rapid growth, we will speak with Hermina Harold, Executive Director of Trust Montana, about the community land trust model as a way of ensuring long-term, housing and farmland affordability, and finally we will hear from the Program Leader of MSU Extension's Community Development Program, Tara Mastel, who is working on a different type of change occurring in Montana's towns and who explains why we should rethink the narrative of “rural decline”. Shirley Sherrod, Executive Director of the Southwest Georgia Project for Community Education discusses her life-long experiences as an advocate for farmers, the outcomes of the Georgia runoff elections, and the successful work completed by the Southwest Georgia Project. Sherrod is quoted in an article that appeared in the Washington Post on Sunday, January 17, regarding Tom Vilsack’s nomination as agriculture secretary by the Biden Administration. She states: “He has to create a culture of racial and social justice across the agency to even begin to undo the harm that has occurred,” (see link Below) www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/01/14/vilsack-usda-black-farmers/ Shirley Sherrod is a Baker County Georgia native who grew up on her family’s farm. In March 1965, her father was murdered by a white farmer who was not prosecuted. The tragic murder of her father when she was 17 years old had a profound impact on her life and led to her decision to stay in the south to work for change. Shirley helped to start the civil rights movement in Baker County and later married Charles Sherrod, one of the founding members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and leader of SNCC’s work in Southwest Georgia. With her husband and others, she helped to form New Communities, Inc., the first Community Land Trust in the United States. New Communities serves as a laboratory and model in the movement toward the development of community land trusts (CLTs) throughout the country. There are more than 200 CLTs today. Shirley has a B.A. in Sociology from Albany State University in Albany, Georgia and a M.A. in Community Development from Antioch University in Yellow Springs, Ohio. In 2015, she was awarded a Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Sojourner-Douglas College in Baltimore, Maryland. She has received many awards for her work in civil rights, and as an advocate for farmers and rural residents. In 2009, Shirley was appointed by the Obama Administration as USDA Georgia State Director of Rural Development. She became the first person of color to hold the position. Shirley was forced to resign her position in 2010 after conservative blogger, Andrew Brietbart edited a speech she made at a NAACP banquet, to make it appear that she discriminated against a white farmer while serving in her federally appointed position. Subsequent events showed that Brietbart’s edited video was taken out of context and was part of broader comments that conveyed a completely different meaning. This month Shirley Sherrod joined us on The Stories Behind Our Food to talk about the half century she's spent seeking justice for Black farmers. New Communities Inc. in Georgia was the first community land trust in the United States. Weathering discrimination, drought and outright sabotage, this organization has worked nonstop to build a better life for farmers. As the members of New Communities celebrate their 50th anniversary this year on land once owned by the largest slaveholder in the state, they're looking to the future, planting new trees and bringing younger people into agriculture. Many of the challenges discussed in this episode are specific to Black farmers due to the racism they've faced from their white neighbors and from government entities. But there is a lot they have in common with small-scale family farmers around the world. And as New Communities grows, Ms. Sherrod says, “we'll bring everyone else along with us.” We feel lucky to have had this chance to host Ms. Sherrod who, in addition to her work as an organizer and as former Director of Rural Development for the state of Georgia, is a storyteller with a powerful vision. This episode was produced by Gary Goodman with hosts Kate Chess and Danielle Robidoux. The struggle for Black economic independence: Not a lot of people, particularly people of color, have had a chance to design a new community, to be different and equal, co-owned by its residents. In 1969, Shirley Sherrod co-founded a collective farm in Lee County, Georgia. At 6,000 acres, it was the largest tract of black-owned land in the United States. What happened to the New Communities land trust they planned? Let's just say they were way, way ahead of their time but their time just might be coming back. Shirley Sherrod is a long time civil rights organizer, and trainer. You may remember the scandal when right wing propagandist Andrew Breitbart doctored a tape of her and got her fired from her appointed post as Georgia State Director of Rural Development for the U.S. Department of Agriculture . Today, Sherrod sits on the executive committee of the Southern Rural Black Women's Initiative for Economic and Social Justice, a collective of women leaders in the South. All that and a commentary from Laura on America's scapegoating of our poorest residents.

It's a fight that has included devastating racism, the biggest class action lawsuit in the history of the United States, and a high-profile firing from the USDA.  But Shirley's story taps into a much bigger one; she and her family are just some of the tens of thousands of black farmers who have been victims of institutional racism. This is a story about how those farmers lost ownership of millions of acres of land in the U.S., in part because of USDA discrimination. It's also a story of how Shirley Sherrod and others have kept fighting back—and, in some surprising ways, winning.

Gannett's Civil Rights in America: Connections to a Movement website helps tell the complete story, with rich context provided from Gannett newspapers and TV stations that were there at the movement's height in communities all over the South. The web portal is updated continually and features news stories, personal stories, records and more about the movement.

Tonight we did a review of This Week in Post Racial America. It was a sorry week for the country in my opinion. It's not possible to do a winners and losers segment this week, as everyone involved in the Shirley Sherrod episode was a loser. It was a great pleasure to welcome Stephanie Davis back to the studio for the full hour. She provided some great insights and perspective to the conversation. What is Pundit Review Radio? On Boston’s Talk Station WRKO since 2005, Pundit Review Radio is where the old media meets the new. Each week we give voice to the work of the most influential leaders in the new media/citizen journalist revolution. Called “groundbreaking” by Talkers Magazine, this unique show brings the best of the blogs to the radio every Sunday evening from 6-8pm on AM680 WRKO, Boston’s Talk Station.

This is the latest episode of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast with DJ Fusion & Jon Judah for the week of July 21, 2010 with some new and classic Hip-Hop & Soul Music, news and commentary. This week's show commentary focused on the utterly ridiculous mini-drama of the forced resignation of USDA worker Shirley Sherrod after false accusations of racism during an old NAACP speech via the right-wing news media (and how pitifully the Obama Administration, national NAACP and other news outlets fell for it without doing their own research), news of podcasts currently making up 1/2 of the 'net radio listening audience, not being able to trademark different names for weed/pot/marijuana in the United States and some other things here and there. Besides this week's brand new Black Agenda Report segment on the FuseBox Radio Broadcast, we also have a special 40 min. interview segment from Dr. Jared Ball & the "Jazz & Justice" Show from WPFW 89.3 FM in Washington, DC (gained via VoxUnion.com). The interview segment features Professor Houston A. Baker (author of the book "Betrayal: How Black Intellectuals Have Abandoned the Ideals of the Civil Rights Era") discussing his viewpoint about the ways in which leading Black intellectuals have “abandoned the ideals of the Civil Rights era” along with Pres. Obama’s impact in the United States, viable Black political and/or intellectual leadership in the public sphere, what's missing from the perspective of political organizations and more!
