“Service … it's a great healer for a broken heart. It helped me a lot through our fight for our son, and the difficulties and the challenges of fighting for him and then losing him,” says Gary Sinise. An Emmy Award-winning actor, producer, director, and musician, Sinise has dedicated his life to supporting America's active-duty military, veterans, first responders, and their families. The Gary Sinise Foundation has raised over $500 million in support of these communities, and Sinise has won many awards for his humanitarian contributions, including the Presidential Citizen Medal, the second-highest civilian honor in the United States. In this episode, Sinise reflects on his three decades of service, from building dozens of specially modified homes for wounded veterans and first responders to playing nearly 600 concerts with the Lt. Dan band (named after his Forrest Gump character) at military bases across the United States and overseas.Sinise's son McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise died last year at age 33 after a five-year battle with a rare bone cancer called chordoma. Before he passed, he was able to record an entire album of music that he'd begun in college. It's titled “Resurrection & Revival.”Mac's story and his father's full tribute to his son can be found here on the Gary Sinise Foundation website: https://www.garysinisefoundation.org/mac-tribute
“Brothers After War” is a documentary film directed by Jake Radenmacher in partnership with the Gary Sinise Foundation. Brothers After War debuted in 140 movie theatres nationwide. I strongly recommend both Veterans and civilians see this film. Between 2005-2007, Jake risked everything, including his life, to tell the story of his brothers serving Iraq. He embedded with multiple units, filmed numerous combat engagements, and interviewed more than forty combat Veterans in the warzone. The result was the award winning “Brothers at War” documentary. In “Brothers After War” Jake reconnects with some of the soldiers and Marines featured in his first film. It is a poignant, often sad and something humorous look at their lives after war. An underlying theme of the film is the idea that sometimes one of the hardest parts of being a warrior is returning home. Jake says, “I started Brothers After War broken.” From 2016-2018 he had a two-year international custody battle. In a meeting with Sinise, Gary told him “Jake, sometimes I think the way to heal a broken heart is to help someone else.” Jake's two brothers are central characters in both films. Between them, his brothers deployed a total of sixteen times. He also included a number of spouses in both films and considers it a unique aspect of the production. After producing Brothers At War, Jake and a team began conducting resiliency workshops sponsored by the Gary Sinise Foundation. Jake and a team of three Veteran trainers visit various communities to use the film as a catalyst to open discussion with Veterans. If you would like to have them visit your community, visit their website to schedule an event. TAKEAWAY: After seeing the film, one of the Veterans told Jake “Brothers After War made me feel like I wasn't alone, that I'm not broken, that it's okay to be vulnerable. It gave me hope for my future.”

Joe Mantegna grew up around multiple family members who were combat veterans of World War II. He tried to become a pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War but was dismissed due to poor eyesight. But for more than 20 years, Mantegna has been a very active supporter of our active duty military, veterans, and families of the fallen. Since 2002, he has been a part of the National Memorial Day Concert, serving almost all of those years as a host or co-host alongside fellow veterans advocate Gary Sinise. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Mantegna shares his story from growing up in Chicago to becoming a successful actor on stage and screen. He also explains how his understanding of Memorial Day changed drastically once he was asked to be a part of the concert. Mantegna also tells us how the powerful stories that get presented each year are chosen and what it is like to share such emotional moments in front of the families who lived it and often lost their loved ones.

While not a veteran himself, actor and director Gary Sinise is now synonymous with devotion to our active duty military, our veterans, and their families.Sinise turned 18 years old shortly after the U.S. withdrawal of forces from Vietnam. However, hearing the stories of service in Vietnam from his wife's brothers instilled a deep appreciation for those who served and a desire to help them - especially those who struggled after coming home to a hostile public and had difficulty returning to civilian life. That passion grew even more after Sinise was cast as "Lieutenant Dan" in the movie "Forrest Gump". He describes going through training for the role and connecting deeply with the arc of Lieutenant Dan's story - from a proud officer to a double amputee spiraling out of control to recovery in both his personal and professional lives.Sinise also walks us through how "Forrest Gump" led to the creation of the Lieutenart Dan Band, which played countless shows for troops at home and abroad. He tells us how his work with the band eventually led him to co-host the National Memorial Day Concert at the U.S. Capitol. And he shares how his work serving military and veteran families prompted the creation of the Gary Sinise Foundation, which is extremely active in serving our heroes in many way throughout the year.Don't miss this conversation with one of the military community's most steadfast friends.

It is based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Winston Groom and stars Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Mykelti Williamson and Sally Field. The story depicts several decades in the life of Forrest Gump (Hanks), a slow-witted and kindhearted man from Alabama who witnesses and unwittingly influences several defining historical events in the 20th-century United States. The film differs substantially from the novel. Principal photography took place between August and December 1993, mainly in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Extensive visual effects were used to incorporate Hanks into archived footage and to develop other scenes. The soundtrack features songs reflecting the different periods seen in the film. Forrest Gump was released in the United States on July 6, 1994, and received generally favorable reviews for Zemeckis's direction, performances (particularly that of Hanks and Sinise), visual effects, music, and screenplay. The film was an enormous success at the box office; it became the top-grossing film in America released that year and earned over US$678.2 million worldwide during its theatrical run, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 1994, behind The Lion King. The soundtrack sold over 12 million copies. Forrest Gump won six Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Hanks, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, and Best Film Editing. It received many award nominations, including Golden Globes, British Academy Film Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Varying interpretations have been made of the protagonist and the film's political symbolism. In 2011, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[3][4][5]

John Mayer – actor, director, and chair of the Theatre Department at Cal State Stanislaus – has written Steppenwolf Theatre Company of Chicago: In Their Own Words, the (so far) definitive chronicle of Chicago's groundbreaking theatre ensemble. A high school friend of two of the company's founders – Gary Sinise and Jeff Perry – John interviewed dozens of artists and administrators who were instrumental in Steppenwolf's evolution, and reveals such tidbits as Sinise's early fundraising efforts (which involve a hubcap); the greatest summation of Steppenwolf ever; shout-outs to amazing influential teachers; what an MFA really gives you; tensions between art and commerce; memories of John Malkovich's landmark production of Balm In Gilead; and, most importantly, how passion, chutzpah, drive, and the ability to adapt and change creates long-term artistry. THE BOYS ARE BACK TOGETHER AND WOKE YANNI IS LIVING THROUGH HIS OWN CHRISTMAS CAROL. Yannis Pappas is back in the studio after fighting The Hilary! In 325 ACE, Roman Emperor Constantine I brought together leaders of the Christian faith to resolve the controversy of Arianism and establish the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Now make no mistake, there were many Councils of Nancia and in one of them, they decided that Jesus had a birthday sometime in December. What does a true advocate for America’s service members look like? Look no further than Gary Sinise. What began in the early 80’s with his support of Vietnam Veterans groups and the creation of Vets Night, a program offering free dinners and performances for veterans at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, his commitment continued into working on behalf of the Disabled American Veterans organization. Since the attacks of September 11th, 2001, his dedication to our nation’s defenders, veterans and first responders has become a tireless crusade of support, service and gratitude to all those who protect our freedom by serving our country. All this was birthed by Gary’s “never think you can’t do it” attitude, which he developed at an early age. His portrayal of disabled Vietnam veteran Lt. Dan Taylor in the film Forrest Gump formed an enduring connection with servicemen and women throughout the military community. Sinise also formed the “Lt. Dan Band” in early 2004 and began entertaining troops serving at home and abroad. The band now performs close to 30 shows a year for military bases, charities and fundraisers supporting wounded heroes, Gold Star families, veterans and troops around the world. In recognition of his humanitarian work on behalf of our nation’s defenders, Sinise has earned many distinguished awards including the Bob Hope Award for Excellence in Entertainment from the Medal of Honor Society, the Spirit of the USO Award, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Doughboy Award, the Sylvanus Thayer Award, and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Award from the National Defense Industrial Association. In 2008, he received the Presidential Citizens Medal, the second-highest civilian honor awarded to citizens for exemplary deeds performed in service of the nation. In 2012, Sinise was presented with the Spirit of Hope Award by the Department of Defense, was named an honorary Chief Petty Officer by the United States Navy and in 2013 was pinned as an honorary Marine by General James Amos, commandant of the United States Marine Corps. In 2011, to expand upon his individual efforts, Sinise established the Gary Sinise Foundation. Its mission is to serve and honor our nation’s defenders, veterans, first responders, their families and those in need by creating and supporting unique programs that entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen and build communities. Of its many outreach efforts, the Gary Sinise Foundation is building custom Smart Homes for severely wounded veterans, serving hearty meals to deploying troops and hosting spirit-boosting festivals for patients, families and medical staff at military hospitals. Giving back to those who sacrifice for our nation and encouraging others to do the same has become Gary Sinise’s personal quest and what he hopes will endure as a legacy of service to others. “Freedom and security are precious gifts that we, as Americans, should never take for granted,” says Sinise. “We must do all we can to extend our hand in times of need to those who willingly sacrifice each day to provide that freedom and security. While we can never do enough to show our gratitude to our nation’s defenders, we can always do a little more.” Support the show.

Apollo 13 Liftoff Force Fed Sci-Fi fans, we have a problem ... as we look back at the Apollo 13 film, go over the Apollo 13 movie summary, the cast of Apollo 13 the movie, and more. Join us as we go over our Apollo 13 movie rating and review. Failure is not option this time! (Too corny? Probably, but I had to). Finally, we just want to mention that we wanted to step away from sci-fi just for this episode to help commemorate the Apollo astronauts and the Apollo 11 50th anniversary of the moon landing! Read on and/or listen to the podcast episode and enjoy! The Apollo 13 Movie Summary Photo by Georges Biard The Apollo 13 movie summary goes a little something like this according to us here at Force Fed Sci-Fi ... During the Apollo program, we have the launch of Apollo 13. Prior to this mission, Apollo 11 and 12 were able to land on the moon and Apollo 13 was slated to do the same. Astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert are eager to make it to the moon, but an explosion occurs as a result of one of the liquid oxygen tanks sparking. Now, NASA has to frantically work to bring the crew home safely as there are many issues that arose because of the explosion (power consumption upon re-entry to earth and even having to build an extra carbon dioxide filter out of whatever the astronauts had on board). After a sling shot after the moon, it takes a while for the crew to return home safely, but with the great minds working on all of these issues, these three astronauts survived against all odds. The Cast of Apollo 13 the Movie Tom Hanks as commander Jim Lovell We at Force Fed Sci-Fi argue that while Hanks had his best roles in the 1990's (Apollo 13 included), Hanks does a phenomenal job at any role he plays, honestly. In Apollo 13, he takes on the great and historic role of astronaut Jim Lovell during the Apollo 13 mission. Hanks, other than the film calling for a bit of dramatization of the historical events, embodied Lovell perfectly. In addition, John Travolta was originally offered this role. Luckily we did not get him as portraying Lovell and were happy to learn that the role went to Tom Hanks. Kevin Bacon as command module pilot Jack Swigert Another great actor included in the Apollo 13 film was Kevin Bacon who played the command module pilot of the Apollo 13 mission, Swigert. Again, a great performance by another great actor taking on this type of role. We'll get into it a bit later, but the way the filmmakers wrote Swigert into the film isn't entirely accurate. Like many other things, dramatization of the film is necessary for a Hollywood film. Bill Paxton as lunar module pilot Fred Haise While we miss Bill Paxton, we have to talk about how wonderful he was in this film as well. Fred Haise had the unfortunate mishap of developing a urinary tract infection while on the Apollo 13 mission. While it's not an actor's dream to act out being sick (especially after taking off in a rocket and throwing up), Paxton did a fine job as Fred Haise. Gary Sinise as Ken Mattingly Gary Sinise had to play the astronaut who was grounded for the Apollo 13 mission (Swigert taking Mattingly's place). The film portrays Ken Mattingly as being pivotal in the role of getting the crew of Apollo 13 mission back home. While we weren't sure that he was the sole person at NASA to come up with the re-entry sequence for the capsule, he was a part of that group. Interestingly, Ron Howard let Sinise pick which character he'd like to tryout and read for, and he chose Mattingly. Ed Harris as flight director Gene Kranz Gene Kranz was portrayed by the great Ed Harris. Kranz was the daytime flight director during the Apollo 13 mission. We think Ed Harris captured the emotional composure that Kranz would have had to have during this time, but at the same time, you see him worried in the film a bit, especially as the initial explosion occurred on the spacecraft. With all of this, Ed Harris was nominated for best supporting actor...

In September 1993 actor Gary Sinise, fresh off of the triumph of directing his film adaptation of Of Mice Men, was being fitted for a long-haired wig to shoot scenes as the disabled veteran Lt. Dan Taylor in the movie Forrest Gump. The film’s runaway success, both at the box office and the Academy Awards of course brought Sinise acclaim as a performer, but he found that when he visited veteran’s groups they naturally identified him with the inspiring figure of the wounded Marine officer. Less than ten years later, in the aftermath of the 9-11 attacks, Sinise cast around for a way to connect to and contribute to the sacrifices of US fighters on the front lines — and the journey into a thoroughgoing commitment to the work of supporting veterans and active duty service people is the through line of Sinise's brand new memoir Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service. He sat down with us on the eve of publication to talk about the path from founding Chicago’s Legendary Steppenwolf Theater Company to his career in film and television — and his current work helming the many projects of the Gary Sinise Foundation.

Sean and Matt discovered something of the highest form of Snob during this one. A new mission! It is time to write Forrest Gump Fan Fiction. Gump is a wonderful Hanks film directed by Bob, Steve’s friend. It covers thousands of years of world history, revealing that Forrest is the most important person in the world. Sean and Matt are a bit baffled by this movie. They particularly wonder, why was it made? It is universally loved, well-made, and incredibly iconic. Yet, its purpose seems a mystery. Perhaps, it was all about Sinise. Well listener, open up your box of chocolates, grab your paddle, and lace up those sneakers, something is about to bite you!The General is ready to take you on a ride through history, filled with many, many Hanx yells!
It's December, which means we have an excuse to watch movies that people say are Christmas movies, but aren't actually Christmas movies. And we're starting with the action film everyone always insists is a Christmas movie, Reindeer Games. Featuring Ben Affleck's eyebrows, Sinise at his most Sinisiest, and Theron giving more depth to her character than she deserves, this case of mistaken identity is one for the ages. As always, this episode is edited and produced by Riley's podcasting company Podigy, who have put out a Complete Guide to Podcast Editing which will get your podcast sounding phenomenal for free!Or if you want us to take your podcast to the next level, come see why people love Podigy's podcast editing This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
What's the first thing you'd do if you just got out of jail? Would it be to pretend to you are your dead cellmate so you could date his jailhouse fiance? Would it be to plan a heist with thugs who think you are your dead cellmate? Well, if you thought those were good ideas, boy do we got the movie for you. Despite its silly premise Reindeer Games (2000) has an impressive lineup of actors starring in this action, holiday flick. Ben Affleck takes the lead alongside Charlize Theron, Gary Sinise, and Danny Trejo with the incredible John Frankenheimer directing! That's a lot of Oscar nominated or winning talent right there. Invasion of the Remake gets into their best Santa costumes to unwrap this bizarre action film and try to pull out the best of it to rethink, and theoretically remake Reindeer Games. Won't you join us? No one is left out of our Reindeer Games! This week on Alcohollywood, Ele Matelan of WildClaw Theatre joins us as we continue our March full of Mars movies with the companion piece to last week’s Red Planet, Brian De Palma’s Disney-produced Mission to Mars! Telling the same story of a group of astronauts taking off for the Red Planet (Gary Sinise, Connie Nielsen, Tim Robbins and Jerry O’Connell) to investigate Don Cheadle’s doomed first mission, De Palma’s 2001-lite slog takes some hard left turns amongst its Disney-caliber safeness, and we’ll take you through them along with our custom cocktail and drinking rules! (Thanks to our sponsor Jackbox as part of the Chicago Podcast Coop!)
A movie hated as much as it is loved occupies T100P #115. This flick shouldn't make us love it so much, but Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis sell it beautifully at (nearly) every turn. The cast is fine, the F/X are still impressive and the soundtrack is one of the best ever. Prepare yourself for a record number of Gumpian impressions, then order yourself some Sparkplug Coffee while hearing all we have to say about that!
Listen as Sergeant First Class (retired) Mike Schlitz brings us up to date on the 70th Anniversary of D-Day and the Gary Sinise Foundation; and Jonnie Clasen tells us about a grass-roots effort to get August 10, 2014 designated as National WW II Merrill's Marauder Day. Also included are updates on Rangers Cory (Run Ranger Run) Smith and Cory Remsburg.
Prantsuse ajaloolane Michel Pastoureau (snd 1947) on rahvusvaheliselt tuntud Euroopa visuaalkultuuri ajaloo uurija, kelle kitsam huvi on olnud sümbolite ja värvide ajalugu. (Michel Pastoureau. Sinine: ühe värvi ajalugu. Toimetab Küllo Arjakas.)
