Send us a textWhat happens when the guns fall silent? When a director embarks on a journey to understand his brothers' experiences in war, he discovers a story far more complex than he anticipated—one that spans 15 years and follows the profound transformation of men who went from young soldiers to veterans finding their way home.In "Brothers After War," documentary filmmaker Jake Rademacher reconnects with his two brothers and ten other veterans he embedded with during the Iraq War. The film weaves together past and present, creating a tapestry that shows these warriors as they were—young, idealistic, and thrust into the chaos of combat—and as they are now—seasoned adults navigating the challenges of civilian life with humor, wisdom, and sometimes, deep pain. The documentary doesn't flinch from difficult truths. In perhaps its most powerful moment, Jake's brother Joe reveals he once sat with a gun in his mouth, half a pound of pressure away from ending his life—something he'd never told his family before. This raw confession illuminates the epidemic of veteran suicide that has claimed 35,000 lives since the War on Terror began. Yet the film isn't defined by darkness. We watch as veterans forge new paths—building businesses, raising families, supporting fellow veterans, and finding purpose beyond their military service. From a former sniper turned commercial banker to a lieutenant colonel who discovers joy in forestry management, these stories illustrate the remarkable resilience of those who've served. What distinguishes "Brothers After War" is its intimate perspective, possible only because of Jake's unique position as both filmmaker and brother. The camera captures unguarded moments of brotherly love, conflict, and healing that transcend the typical war documentary. When one veteran says his most memorable moment from the past two decades is "right now—knowing someone still cares," we understand the film's true mission: to ensure veterans know they're not forgotten, that their stories matter, and that the bonds forged in war can help build bridges to civilian life. Executive produced by Gary Sinise, this is more than a documentary—it's a reminder that while war ends, the journey of the warrior continues, deserving of our attention, understanding, and support.
“Der europäische Idealismus ist ein bisschen verloren gegangen“, sagt der Schriftsteller und Journalist Cay Rademacher, der mit seiner deutsch-französischen Familie in Salon-de-Provence lebt. Das Hin und Her in Europa sei längst so selbstverständlich, dass man fast vergesse, was für eine Errungenschaft es doch sei. "Das ist das gelebte Europa, nicht das der Sonntagsreden." Von Cay Rademacher.
Watch This Episode On YouTubeOne of the things that fascinates me about filmmaking is the concept of authenticity. That is, the filmmakers either have to put in the time to do research for a particular film genre (veterans, ethnic films, etc) or they have to live it. For the new film BROTHERS AFTER WAR, my guest Jake Rademacher lived it. It's in his blood -- literally, as many of his siblings serve in the military. I felt honored to talk with a director who told veterans' stories so eloquently. Keep checking the BROTHERS AFTER WAR social media on when it'll be available for screening near you. And I hope you enjoy this episode with one of the most authentic voices for military veteran stories you'll ever hope to meet. In this episode, Jake and I discuss:how he created such a unique and genuine film series about his "brothers" -- both familial and military;how he created such an authentic film about war and after war;what made him decide to get into filmmaking and how he had the resilience to go into war zones with just a camera;advice he has for other documentary filmmakers -- "don't make a film during a global pandemic"; they were the first film back in Italy; "get a pen out, a piece of paper out, and ask yourself why you want to make yourself this film? and why do they need to see it?;his thoughts on the political response to Matthew Heineman's film RETROGRADE and how he handled his relationship with the DoD -- "I always have final cut";what did he leave out? where does it go too far for a cinéma vérité documentary filmmaker?would he consider making a narrative film? is documentary the best way to share veterans' stories?if he wants to turn it into a Richard Linklater BEFORE type series and what's next for him;how Christian filmmakers have inspired a model for veteran films.Jake's Indie Film Highlight: FIGHTING SPIRIT: A COMBAT CHAPLAIN'S JOURNEY (2024) dir. by Richard Hull; Justin RobertsLinks:Follow @brothersafterwar on InstagramBROTHERS AFTER WAR WebsiteSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

Thriving Adoptees - Inspiration For Adoptive Parents & Adoptees
Do you long to belong? Could belonging help you heal? Listen in as transcultural adoptee Nicole shares her profound insights to help you along your healing curve. Here's a bit about Nicole from her website:"I was born to one set of parents and adopted by another set. I grew up always knowing that I was adopted, yet I knew very little about my roots. Consequently I lived in the fantasies that only children can invent––as an adoptee from a closed adoption, those fantasies were always a plausible reality. The influence of my adoption and reunion (with my biological family) feature prominently in my studio practice where I explore concepts of intimacy, identity, and belonging through visual work as well as in community-based works. In 2021, I received my MA from Loyola Marymount University in Marital & Family Therapy with a Specialization in Clinical Art Therapy. I came to that program as I began more decidedly to do work with the community, specifically my community of the adoption constellation.Proudly, I was awarded an Adoptees for Awareness Grant, Individual Artist Fellowship (California Arts Council), and a Creative Corps Grant (Arts Council for Long Beach/California Arts Council) in 2023, received an Artistic Community Engagement Grant from the Rema Hort Mann Foundation in 2016, and I have collaborated and shown work internationally in Europe, Africa, Australia, Asia, South America, and North America (specifically the US, Canada, Mexico and Cuba).I currently live and work in Los Angeles."Photo credit: Jeff Forney @jefforney on Insta https://www.instagram.com/jeffforney/We Are Not Our Cruxes:https://bit.ly/wearenotourcruxesRSVP for first event of We Are Not Our Cruxes:https://bit.ly/cruxes-session-oneArtist website: nicolerademacher.comTherapist website: nicrrad.comhttps://www.instagram.com/nicrradhttps://twitter.com/nicrradhttps://www.facebook.com/nicrrad/
Eisenhower famously said “Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil and you're a thousand miles from the corn field.” That resonates with a lot of farmers who know the theory of farming doesn't always directly translate to the practice. Farmer and agronomist Frank Rademacher joins us to talk about what's working on his farm in East Central Illinois, and the work he does as a conservation agronomist with The Nature Conservancy. Frank discusses the theory vs the practice when it comes to soil health, what has worked and what hasn't worked on his farm, how they've arrived at some of their current practices, and a little bit on Frank's work with retailers on behalf of The Nature Conservancy. “What we kind of found is we were doing diverse mixes, kind of buying into some of that messaging that diverse mixes are always best. And again, I think that's kind of where the theory versus in practice discussion happens because we would have some harsh winters and no snow cover. And so some of those species would not overwinter. And so, we start off on a bad foot if we're really depending on cover crops and we can't get the consistency. So what we've really tried to build over time is a portfolio of cover crops that perform consistently.” - Frank Rademacher Frank found a passion for agronomy while in college, and started helping his father implement some conservation practices on their farm. Over the past 10 years, Frank and his father have gone 100% no-till and insecticide-free on their 600 acre farm. They've also ramped up their cover crop program which includes using a roller-crimper and high biomass cover crops. Frank also works as a conservation agronomist with The Nature Conservancy, where part of his focus is working with ag retailers and other farmer advisors to add conservation advice to their business models. “I understand what some of the environmental goals that Illinois has set out are and I also understand that some of these things are difficult to do at the farm level. And so, how do we scale conservation? That's a lot of what we look at now is not only shaping that cover crop mix to be a little bit more flexible, depending on spring weather, but also just understanding the operation as a whole.” - Frank Rademacher This Week on Soil Sense: Meet Illinois farmer and conservation agronomist Frank Rademacher Explore the balance Frank is finding between operational success and incorporating conservation practices Thank you to the Soy Checkoff for sponsoring this Farmers for Soil Health series of the Soil Sense podcast. Welcome to the Wildgoose Festival 2023, "Ignite"!One of my favorite parts of Wildgoose is the opportunity to connect with new and old friends, to be reminded of the importance of supportive relationships and to carry these connections home - long after the festival has wrapped up. Our first interview is with a new friend - Kate is the author of three books. Her newest book “Reclaiming Rest: The Promise of Sabbath, Solitude, and Stillness in a Restless World" is available now from all booksellers. In addition to her role as a writer, Kate is a consultant focused in international public health. She also is the leader of, Writing for your Life, a resource center for spiritual writers. This episode's prose piece comes from "The Celtic Daily Prayer - Book 1" adapted to gender inclusive language. It reads:“Their eyes, far-seeing, scan the horizon, the joys venturing of little boats. A torch burns clearly in their grasp, a faithful challenge to this generation -meeting, listening, heart-connecting. In their shadow is a place I covet, a challenge in a present time…While I live may I be the shadow of a Rock in a weary land, a shelter from the heat…"Questions for discussion:1. What does rest mean to you?2. Do you have a regular rest ritual or sabbath practice?3. What is it?4. Why did you choose this as your sabbath/rest practice/ritual?5. If you don't currently have a rest practice, how might you start one - what would i be?6. In this episode of Work in Progress, Ida Rademacher, vice president at the Aspen Institute, joins me from the Global Inclusive Growth Summit in Washington, DC, hosted by the Aspen Institute and The MasterCard Center for Inclusive Growth. Leaders from business, government, philanthropy, and nonprofits gathered at the Summit to discuss an important issue: How do we ensure that everyone has equal access to the opportunities created by economic growth, and how do we make sure that that growth is done responsibly? To quote the organizers: “It has never been more important to understand how constantly shifting demographics, circumstances, and technologies affect the growth, security, and prosperity of communities all over the world.” Rademacher and I touch on many of the same topics discussed at the summit: education, access to capital, jobs creation, and economic mobility and their roles in creating a more equitable society, one that becomes more inclusive in the face of massive growth. Here is some of what she tells me. The Definition of Inclusive Growth "When I think about inclusive growth, I think about more deeply shared prosperity. What does it look like when people are included? They have voice, they have agency, they have dignity, they have freedom. The places where I get really specific there are around how does a level of financial security enable that choice and dignity and freedom. That really becomes the bedrock for mobility." Education "(Education) is one of the fundamental building blocks. It's the equivalent of a public utility. When you think about what it takes to be a full participant in society and democracy, that is the fundamental role of education. What's the level of shared knowledge to navigate the systems in your life? The basics of education, the principles of education stay the same." Career Pathways "Our career pathways work is very substantive. The work we do is very much around thinking about how do you create the right incentives and peer groups within institutions so that you can accelerate learning and so that everybody can be focusing on the outcomes in terms of how are you equipping students today, no matter if they're K through 12 or in higher education, with the, both the hard skills and the soft skills to navigate a changing labor market." Good Jobs "The quality of job isn't just the wage and a very thoughtfully informed bundle of benefits, it's people's schedules. Somebody's limitations for being able to pursue night school or the changing demographic of who is a college student, it's just, it's radically different. But they might not be able to take classes because they work shift work or they're trying to juggle two jobs or they can't figure out the different ways to do that." Financial Security "People are dealing with huge amounts of financial shocks in their lives, lots of income volatility. I often say it's really hard for somebody to swing a baseball bat when they're standing in a canoe. The ability to even have a more forward-looking time horizon about the choices you're making comes from having some part of your day-to-day life feel manageable, feel understandable." What Inclusive Growth Looks Like "When more people can be producers, not just consumers in the economy, economy grows faster, it grows more sustainably, and it's in service of the broader ideals of a society. When you think about shared prosperity, if it doesn't show up on a household balance sheet at the end of the day, if the changes we're trying to make, if the ways that we're trying to make the economy work for more people doesn't show up in actual improvements in household net worth and the ability to manage your everyday life, then we're not there yet." This is just some of what Rademacher tells me in the podcast, which you can listen to here or wherever you get your podcasts. Today, we welcome author and Minnesota's 2014 Teacher of the Year Tom Rademacher to the podcast. Hosts Donnie and Kathleen talk with Rademacher about his two loves of teaching and writing. His books, It Won't Be Easy, An Exceedingly Honest (and Slightly Unprofessional) Love Letter to Teaching and Raising Ollie: How My Nonbinary Art-Nerd Kid Changed (Nearly) Everything I Know, combine both those aspects of Rademacher's work. Rademacher shares his reflections about the teacher shortage and what has and hasn't changed for today's new teachers compared to when he entered the classroom. He also discusses how he approaches diversity, equity, and inclusion in his practice as a white male and the need to continue learning. That learning often comes directly from students, he notes. He also mentions how he has learned to give space for others' sharing and to recognize the amount of time he is the one speaking. In closing today's episode, Rademacher talks about how diverse great teachers are and how they don't all fit the same make or model, but shares a vision for how joy, flexibility, and passion can combine to make a dynamic teacher. Identifying a disease early, no matter what it is, will allow you to take better care of the pigs. As a result, the sooner you identify those at-risk pigs, the sooner they will be treated. Decreasing swine mortality still tends to be the largest opportunity for farmers to increase overall profitability, which is why it is important that we understand all the factors that play into herd health. Dr. Chris Rademacher and I address this issue in today's episode and talk about methods that can increase disease preparedness and what is necessary to start your nursery pigs off properly. "We will always have some sort of disease status in our industry, so it's really more about coming up with ways to manage around that." - Dr. Chris Rademacher
