Making good on our promise from yesterday that TODAY'S show would be worth listening to, Skye Wallace popped by the Cabin for a chat and a few tunes ahead of playing The Oddball tonight at Snowking XXX!
EP 135 Skye Wallace This episode has been sitting in the bunker for a couple weeks. Way too much going on right now and I partially explain at the end of the video, but that is seriously just a droplet of what all has gone on. Top it off I was a little unsure about some of the things we spoke about, but regardless here it is. I don't think I really edited anything out including the ad read for the knife show. Alas we are back at it and have another great epiaode with a knife maker from France coming up next week! Skye was a pleasure to chat with and I'm now constantly listening to the DND podcast that she is a part of. Highly suggest checking out @planetarcanapod @skyewallacemusic and I spoke about some cool stuff that I'm sure many of us in the blacksmithing industry will find a relation too. Art comes in many forms and she is no stranger to that. Funny how someone who doesn't work with metal posting a Bob and Doug video ended up becoming a guest on a blacksmith show. Oddly enough she has actually moved hot steel on an anvil before. Listen and find out more! Hope yah hosers enjoy eh! Good day! Sean Barrette is an author who has since written a book "Heartstrings - First Guitars" Heartstrings – First Guitars, is a collection of memories from a variety of musicians, famous, semi-famous, up and coming, anonymous, or otherwise, about the guitar they learned on, the first guitar they bought with their own money, the first “good” guitar they owned, or the beloved first-line guitar that accompanied them on first songs, first shows, first tours, or first recordings. These short, narrative pieces, tied together with first-time author Sean Barrette's memories of a life and career spent immersed in music, tell a story that demonstrates that, no matter the guitar player, they all have this first guitar story and love to tell it. It's the thread that ties all guitar players together, but these stories also provide insight into the very beginnings of many of the musical artists we love. It may even provide insight into the guitar player who lives with you. Or encourage someone to pick up a guitar and get playing themselves. With first guitar stories by: Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, David Knopfler, Colin Linden (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Johnny Hickman (Cracker), Rob Baker (Tragically Hip), Paul Langlois (Tragically Hip), Gord Sinclair (Tragically Hip), Tom Wilson (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Kevn Kinney (Drivin & Cryin), Liona Boyd, Leeroy Stagger, Moe Berg and Kris Abbott (The Pursuit of Happiness), Blair Packham (The Jitters), Rik Emmett (Triumph), Finny McConnell (The Mahones), Ron Hawkins (Lowest of the Low), Dave Genn (54-40), Skye Wallace, Alun Piggins, Mark Stuart, Stacey Earle, Chris and Eleanor Masterson (The Mastersons), Preston and Alan Glass, Barney Bentall, Sean Kelly (Crash Kelly), Mr. Zero (The Kings), Jaimee Harris, Andrew Hyatt, Terry Draper (Klaatu), Dan “Chewy” Mongrain (Voi Vod), Sal Costa (My Darkest Days, Bonds of Mara), Michael Mckenzie (Lowest of the Low), François Lamoureux, Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker the Star), Ed Ringwald (Gordon Lightfoot), Joel Plaskett, Neil Osborne (54-40), Carl Harvey (Toots & the Maytals), Don Ross, Mike Turner (Our Lady Peace), Darrell Scott, Stephen Fearing (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Ethan Ives (Car Seat Headrest), Jeffrey Trott (Sheryl Crow), Julian Taylor, David Pulkingham, Brian Howes (DDT), Gary Lee Connor (Screaming Trees), Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde), Pete Yorn, Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar), David Baerwald, Pete Droge and Elaine Summers (The Sinners), Serena Ryder, Myles Zuniga (Fastball), Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo), Hayes Carll, Stuart Cameron (Crash Test Dummies), Myles Goodwin (April Wine), Brian and Bruce Good (The Good Brothers), Adrian Eccleston (Drake, The Weeknd), and many more. Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with @SkyeWallace With a skill in carving melodies and shreddable moments from rock foundations, Skye Wallace is also an expert at proving herself in every room, at every turn. The guitar-slinging Canadian road warrior has honed a visceral and honest sound, permeating equal parts Courtney Barnett, Patti Smith, and Neil Young's Marshall Stack era. A live show from Skye and her band is guaranteed to make you let loose and feel something. Shaped by an upbringing of constant motion, and a career that has seen her tour the country endlessly with respected acts such as Matt Mays and Crown Lands, Wallace is at home with the idea that change, especially in oneself, is a constant. This truism, equal parts empirical and emotional, has shaped these new songs, finished during lockdown but dealing with a time when staying in one place was wishful thinking. For Wallace, there's both comfort and conflict in remembering and reconciling the versions of herself formed at the many stops along the way. 00:00 Intro featuring Skye Wallace - Tear A Piece (Bite Me) clip 00:31 Interview with Skye Wallace 29:49 Skye Wallace - The Doubt from Terribly Good Subscribe to @eastcoastdna for music scene chats and live performances. Friends - it's been a minute! But I'm back at the podcast helm to enliven your minds with a few red-hot-and-ready musician interviews in the magical hopper, and I can't wait to share them with you. I had the chance to chat with Skye Wallace a few nights after I saw her and her magical band perform a stellar show at the Bronson Centre in Ottawa. Skye Wallace is what happens when a trained singer with folk roots discovers punk rock in their youth and creates the rock & roll show you've always wanted. Wallace's new self-titled album embodies rock-fire Canadiana. From living on BC's west coast, to spending time at residencies from Norris Point, Newfoundland to Dawson City, Yukon, the Toronto-based artist has been inspired by every corner of the country. Having production on past albums with Jim Bryson and many other collaborators, Skye is a positive-fire-force to be reckoned with.
