Welcome to the Purple Patch podcast! In this week's episode, IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon shares valuable insights on maximizing the benefits of indoor bike trainers to improve outdoor performance. While many of us use an indoor trainer to save time, escape weather conditions during the winter months, and develop fitness through interval training, Matt goes a step further by providing practical tips and tools to upgrade your speed, enhance your outdoor riding experience, and unleash your full potential as a rider. Matt shares effective ways to access a deeper and more focused training session on the indoor bike trainer. He delves into specific strategies, skills, and techniques like leveraging gear usage, cadence, pedal stroke, posture, specificity of intervals, terrain management, and other elements that can help you optimize your bike training well beyond boosting your fitness profile.  Most coaches tend to avoid the topic of skill set acquisition because it is challenging to coach remotely, or they are not familiar with how to approach it. However, this is precisely what we specialize in. It is the backbone of our bike program and our reputation for helping to build stronger and faster riders. Matt reveals the secrets behind our success so that you can connect the dots on how your effort inside applies to you becoming a better bike rider outside.  For even more detail beyond the podcast, attend our Workshop on Wheels and access your chance to get LIVE, real-time coaching on the bike from IRONMAN Master Coach and Purple Patch founder Matt Dixon. Today's episode is a very special one. My guest for this episode was fired in 2009 by the Home Secretary for his inconvenient views on drug policy, famously stating that ‘taking the drug ecstasy is no more dangerous than riding a horse.' He really does stand up for what he believes in, and I'm fascinated by, and in awe of, his brilliant mind. Professor David Nutt is a neuropharmacologist, and Director of the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London. He has published over 500 original research papers, 8 government reports, 35 books and his latest book on cannabis came out last month. I felt so honoured to speak with Professor Nutt today. Expect conversations around psychedelics, how psychedelic treatment can lead to breakthroughs in mental health, and the impact of drugs such as cannabis and alcohol. We are in a mental health crisis, and opening our eyes to new fields of research and treatments can be so beneficial for us. Keep an open mind, and enjoy my discussion with Professor Nutt. The food we eat isn't always the magic bullet, but if we don't eat correctly it can cause destructive effects. Signed at the age of 15 to a professional football contract, Thomas ‘Hal' Robson-Kanu struggled with persistent injuries in the subsequent years. Robson-Kanu played in the premier league, and internationally for Wales. He battled with continuous injuries, while he watched other players his age progress. After two years of being in and out of hospital, battling serious injuries and hitting dead ends with the healing process, he and his father decided to tackle it themselves. As a nutritionist, I'm forever amazed by the lack of awareness and education around nutrition in the sporting world. Nutrition is one of the main foundation and pillars of performance. In today's episode: we explore just how far nutrition can go in its healing power. Last month, Vital MTB had the opportunity to head to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to meet with the crew from RockShox and get a first-hand look at their all-new automatic suspension system, Flight Attendant. We sat down with RockShox Brand Manager, Jon Cancellier and Rockshox Software Engineer, Joe Schoolcraft, to discuss what it took to develop Flight Attendant. We talked about why RockShox originally set out to create an automatic suspension system, how the mechanics of each Flight Attendant component functions, what factors were considered when developing the Flight Attendant algorithm, and we finally touched on where RockShox sees this new technology going in the future.  Our time in Colorado was filled with some awesome riding and provided the perfect opportunity to gain insight into what RockShox's goals were when developing Flight Attendant. We also experienced the trails and terrain that the system was tested on. Ultimately, we left with a great initial impression of how Flight Attendant can transform the pedaling efficiency of our mountain bikes.

Simon spends some time amongst this well-informed and enthusiastic crowd asking two questions: What’s Zwift doing well and where could it improve? Elsewhere in this episode there’s a nice long chat with The Girl, Ray’s life partner and now business partner, on how the family and the blog is settling into life in Amsterdam. Simon, Shane and Ray discuss the implications of Ray’s scoop story about Zwift starting its own hardware division and Ray gets to join the Zwiftcast’s Guessing Club on Peak Zwift. The trio discuss just how much work remains to be done for eSports on Zwift to be successful and, after an interview with Peter Lago from Elite on whether the Italian company is a bit behind the pack in the Smart Bike race, the episode wraps up with Simon talking about his recent big decision: to get an e-Gravel Bike. Shane and Nathan lend a little objectivity to the discussion. Simon, Shane and Nathan discuss the ever-changing and vibrant happenings in Zwift. It’s trainer season so the manufacturers are busy with new launches, upgrades – and keeping up with demand. The Zwiftcast trio assess the “world’s first Smart Bike” from Wattbike, in the shape of the Atom. Verdict: looks pretty tasty but with availability limited to the UK initially, Zwifters in other parts of the world are going to have to be patient. There’s news on the action Elite is taking to stem the shortage of their popular and highly-rated new trainer, the Direto and some interesting chat from the Zwiftcast hosts on the relationship between Smart Trainer ownership and the likelihood of staying subscribed to Zwift. The podcast has a new regular feature starting which should help Zwifters with their nutrition questions. Professor Asker Jeukendrup is exceptionally well-qualified – and a bike rider and triathlete to boot. We meet Asker this episode and look forward to how he can help Zwifters fuel training. A new update has just landed, and Simon, Shane and Nathan discuss its merits – as well as looking forward to what they believe will be a transformative arrival. Group Workouts are due soon and all three Zwiftcasters are very excited. Next the chaps move on to discuss what’s shaping up to be a runaway success – the Zwift Academies. With 10,000 riders now enrolled in both Academies, the Zwift exec charged with keeping everything on track, Tom Hargreaves, talks about the challenges – and discusses what might be coming next in this area. The Zwiftcasters polish off this episode with a discussion of “shenanigans” around the wild card entry for the Aussie e-crit final and the thread on Reddit which discusses Zwift – from a perspective beyond the boundaries of the mainstream Zwift community.

Thanks for making the last two episodes the most downloaded ever! And we’re back with more Zwiftchat and features. Simon, Shane and Nathan kick off with a short discussion on whether too much Zwifting makes you rusty once you get back outside. Then it’s onto dissect the implications of the rider who slipped through a glitch in the matrix and made it onto the obviously unfinished London course extension. The chaps briefly chat through the merits of the Volcano extension then move on to analyse an intriguing statement from the boss of Tacx, Simon Tacx, on their possible plans for a Smart Bike. Is Zwift becoming less social as it grows? The trio are pretty much agreed that it is and wonder if the growth in teams on Zwift is the community’s way of countering the “big city” feel that Zwift can assume at times. Damon McKay from Team TFC talks to Simon about the community benefits that team membership can bring. Simon has the first of his features from his visit to the Tacx factory – and inevitably, given some of the early difficulties with the Flux trainers, there’s a big focus on the company’s QC processes. Finally, veteran Zwifter Chad McNeeese explains his seemingly counter-intuitive decision to “downgrade” from a smart trainer to a dumb turbo – and offers hope to Zwifters who may feel shut out of the full experience if they can’t run to an expensive smart trainer. The chaps finish off with a look ahead to upcoming highlights on the burgeoning ZwiftCommunityLive channel hosted by Nathan.
