In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Michael Denehey interviews Dave McQuillen, the founder of Sufferfest (wahooX), discusses building his cycling app into a $20M enterprise with 45 team members. He details the tough transition from digital downloads to a subscription model and the importance of staying close to customers. Host Michael Denehey explores McQuillen's journey, from managing growth to achieving work-life balance, and the valuable lessons learned along the way. Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here.   Michael delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice.   And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions:   What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to Dave McQuillen, the hardest thing in growing a small business is choosing what not to do. He emphasizes the importance of focusing on what truly drives success and avoiding distractions from bright, shiny objects that can divert attention and resources. What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? Dave McQuillen's favorite business books are "Why We Buy" by Paco Underhill and "Setting the Table" by Danny Meyer. He values "Why We Buy" for its insights into consumer behavior and merchandising, and "Setting the Table" for its lessons on customer experience and leadership. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Dave McQuillen didn't find podcasts to be particularly influential during his time with Sufferfest, but he mentioned enjoying cycling podcasts now that he's out of the industry. For growing a small business, he emphasizes the importance of tools that facilitate meaningful conversations with customers, rather than just quantitative surveys. Prototyping ideas and getting feedback directly from users is also crucial. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Dave McQuillen recommends using tools that facilitate direct, meaningful conversations with customers. He emphasizes the value of prototyping ideas and gathering feedback through interactive discussions rather than relying solely on quantitative surveys. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Dave McQuillen advises that he might not give himself any specific advice on day one. He believes that if he had known how challenging and consuming the journey would be, he might have been too scared to start. Embracing the unknown and adapting as things progressed was, in his view, advantageous to his success. Book a 20-minute Growth Chat with Troy Trewin to see if you qualify for our upcoming course. This week on the HappyCast, the crew ramble on about a variety of topics as they all prepare for a very busy next few weeks. In the first segment, Dylan and Stephanie do a check-in with returning guest favorite, Regina Massingill, as she describes the comedy of errors that ensued during her Muleshoe 60k night race over the weekend. Her new favorite thing just might be racing in the middle of the night without any hydration and only a flashlight guiding her. Her experience helps shed light on how some of us are able to overcome adversity and still have some fun with it, and that even experienced runners are still prone to epic mistakes. For the second segment, Andrew hops on as the crew all talk about their upcoming goals and some training updates. And, of course, the importance of running with professional grade “poop bags”, since that's apparently a requirement at Badwater 135, a race that Stephanie talks about preparing to crew for. Dylan provides some updates for his return to racing, with Sufferfest just a few weeks away, and Andrew gets candid and honest about his struggles and concerns about recovery and some doubts about his health with Bigfoot 200 just a few weeks away. It's a hodgepodge this week as the HappyCast provides a little bit of everything, from overcoming struggles, to embracing new ones, and all that lies in between. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. It's just with, like, you're fully immersed in it... It's the contrast of the whole thing of getting ready for the river beforehand, then you do the crazy thing and you're in there and you're scared and it's thundering, and it's like wet and cooled. And then afterwards, you get off the river, and now it's baking hot, and you take your dry suit off and your love and life, and you're there with your best friends."— Russell Henry 00:08:3300:08:47 The Love for Individual Sports: "Once you're done with your high school sports days, it's like you gotta figure something else out and that's when I really started falling in love with just getting out and, you know, running and hiking and camping and mountain all these sort of individual sports that I still really love."— Max Seigal 00:09:2300:09:41 Trail Running Shoes: "And this new lineup of, their ATRs is is just released this year. And so -- Wow."— Max Seigal 00:37:0000:37:24 Adventuring with Friends: "We just wanted to do something together. We wanted to meet up and go on an adventure. And my new Max was a crusher in the mountains, so I think if I can't remember me or him found the race, but then we just said this is perfect. Let's like because also when we were working together on the ship, week on this polar tourism ship together. Last thing, Max was helping me train for an adventure race that I did in May. I was like, here we are. Just chit chatting and walking and biking and having a good time. And, like, that to me made it just so much more fun..."— Max Seigal 00:47:2100:47:34 Adventure Race: "Honestly, it was like, one of the best weeks of my life, you know, just you're discovering things about yourself. You're discovering, like, how hard you can push yourself? How hard you can go without sleep? how long you can bike and run in the mountains. And, you know, chemistry with a person, like, for that much time, it's just so much discovery, and it's a really good feeling to finish up and be like, wow. I just learned a lot about myself."— Max Seigal Suggestions or advice for someone wanting to do their first adventure race or get into adventure racing Max: I'd say go for it. Adventure race. This was my first one. Russell had done a couple and he's like, dude, let's try this. I had no idea what to expect, but honestly, it was like one of the best weeks of my life. Russell: Just look it up. And I think once you look it up, you see that there's actually lots of races around. You can sign up for something small to start. You can do something small to see if you like it. Favorite piece of Outdoor Gear under $100 Max- the most important things I think are like a good pair of shoes that you can run a lot of miles in and then not get blisters that fit your feet. David Owen—You may know David as the current editor of TitaniumGeek, the home of the first all-inclusive Zwift User Manual and its journey through gadgets, cycling, and virtual cycling platforms. David is an early adopter of Zwift and RGT and has extensive knowledge of the others, like Sufferfest, TrainerRoad, Rouvy, SYSTM, VirtuPro, and MyWhoosh. A cycling coach and founding member of the Kiss Racing Team, he credits virtual cycling and the community for helping him conquer melanoma. Oh yeah, he's also a self-proclaimed subject of the independent state of Derbados!?! Si Bradeley—You love his informative and entertaining Zwift Racing League recons found on his Si Bradely YouTube channel, but that's only the tip of his virtual cycling iceberg. At age 15 Si became the youngest Spin instructor in the UK and joked with his school friends, “I led your Mum's Spin class last night.” In 2001 Si set the Guinness World Record for indoor cycling with a grueling 58 consecutive hours in the saddle. His authoritative knowledge of multiple virtual cycling platforms and passion for the virtual cycling community, in which he is fully immersed, make him a perfect guest. Check out this great The ZOM interview with Si! Clip-in and take a conversational ride with us as we explore the many facets of the bombshell announcement and look to the future. Zwift has a massive headstart, but Wahoo/RGT is primed to cover the gap as all platforms prepare for a photo finish to a race that never ends, we hope!

Even though we haven't really taken a break, we're calling this Season 2. That makes this episode, episode 1 of Season 2. Thanks for carrying us through to another season. Okay, so I wanted to share with you a heat and drought scenario that unfolded with me, my horse and dogs recently. It definitely pushed against the ‘what is safe whilst riding in the heat' protocols. Even though it was forecast for hot and dry, for a moment it got overcast and windy and it seemed like it'd be like that for several hours. I saddled up and headed out with my horse, Barry, and two dogs. I took two liters of water, snacks, and a book. We were headed to the river where I'd hobble Barry to graze and the dogs and I could chill for a few hours before heading back. It'd be a 12-mile round trip. Listen to learn more.  Okay, so for Episode 1 of our new season, we welcome Ben Longwell of True West Horsemanship. Ben and his wife, Natalie, live in New Zealand where they run lessons and clinics and produce an online video library. They also come to the States most years to do guided ranch tours – it's pretty neat, a trip for New Zealanders to ride on working ranches, learn horsemanship and apply some stockmanship, and even to shop at stores like IFA and Big R – where you can get gear and clothes that you just can't get in New Zealand. We thank Pharm Aloe Equine and Lucerne Farms for their continued support. Pharm Aloe offers aloe pellets and gel and other products to support horses' GI health, immune system, and other processes. When you are looking for aloe products, the high quality and effectiveness of active ingredients are really  important. Pharm Aloe's got that in spaces. Check out the research and the compelling back story at Pharm Aloe Equine.  Lucerne Farms is a forage company based in Northern Maine. Lucerne has an array of products, with timothy or alfalfa or timothy and alfalfa, with a touch of molasses, or not, for feeding your horses.  Feeding forage is wwaayy better than feeding grain. That's research based, but of course, your horses will tell you, too.  Find Lucerne Farms at your feedstore and ask for it by name. You can also find links to all our sponsors here.   We also thank Redmond Equine, Kate's Real Food, and Patagonia WorkWear for their continuing support. Please follow these brands and buy their stuff as they support us and what we're doing. This month, we're giving away a Patagonia WorkWear item to two lucky listeners. Check it out here. Thanks for listening y'all!

“The best entrepreneurial ideas are when someone solves their own problem and then realizes there are other people out there that have the same problem.” Think about a product you use weekly, then think about every way you could make it better. Then figure out how you could turn that into a product even without a the budget. That's exactly what David McQuillen did when he launched The Sufferfest, a digital download series of cycling trainer videos that's grown into a streaming app with exclusive rights to UCI race footage and global audience. While he may have lucked into a better distribution method, he made something infinitely better than the alternatives of the time, and has continued to improve it to stay at the top of his game and remain relevant amongst a slew of new virtual and digital competition. Here's his story, full of lessons for any entrepreneur!
