Do you know, for example, why they are more interested in selling you a phone at the end of each month than in the beginning? Or why when you see a low price for a nice phone, there's usually a catch? Or why tables with tester-models are always in the center of the store? Interested? Let's find out the whole truth! Seth and JJ look into the labor and safety concerns at the factories of Apple's primary supplier, Foxconn, in China. After giving a high-level view of Apple and Foxconn, they dive into their problems with Excessive Overtime, Suicides, Low Wages, Illegal Student Labor, Riots, Strikes, and Hazardous Environments. While recognizing that Apple puts a lot of effort into their corporate social responsibility efforts, Seth makes the case that Apple can and should do more. On each episode, I’ll talk about recent tech news, recommend apps that I use myself and leave you with a great tech tip. Tech News Global smartphone sales have not been firing on all cylinders for several years now but Gartner’s latest figures record the first ever decline since the analyst began tracking the market all the way back in 2004. (Though it’s not the first analyst to call a decline.) Gartner’s figures peg sales of smartphones to end users in Q4 2017 at nearly 408 million units — a 5.6 per cent decline over its Q4 2016 figure. It says No.1 ranked smartphone maker Samsung saw a year-on-year unit decline of 3.6 per cent in Q4, while sales of Apple’s iPhones fell 5 per cent in the holiday quarter, though it says Cupertino stabilized its second-place marketshare. Google is choosing to release its new smartphone, the Nexus 4, exclusively in developed countries such as the US, UK, and Australia. The phone will be sold at cost, meaning revenue will come only through content sales such as music and video services. Content providers, however, have been reluctant to release digital content in developed countries due to piracy fears. Therefore, Nexus 4 sales are not expected to impact sales of major manufacturers such as Samsung and Nokia.
