We're back with a review of a classic movie, "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory." Sure, it's gotten another adaptation and a prequel, but this is the original 1971 version starring Gene Wilder. - Is Willy Wonka benevolent & eccentric or a psychotic child-murderer? Do the Geeks have an answer to the question, or is the movie successfully ambivalent on the matter? - What extreme impression did one of the Geeks get about one of the five golden ticket winners in the movie? - What did the Geeks think about the Oompa Loompas and the actors playing them? - Why does Grandpa Joe have a dedicated hate group against him online? - Did one of the Geeks have any favorite songs in the movie? - What are the different interpretations of what Snozzberries refer to? - Which American food company helped finance this film, why, and what product associated with the marketing...failed. - What's up with Hershey's chocolate? - Which Geek is convinced that four of the children in this movie were killed by the chocolate factory? - Does this movie have a good message in the end, or is it undercut by the mere possibility that Willy Wonka is a psychotic child murder? - Is the Golden Ticket contest rigged? Which Geek things so & why? - What mistake was one Geek making when remembering something about the setting of the movie? - What great things did one Geek have to say about Gene Wilder? - Which Geek was annoyed by the way Charlie Bucket's teacher was teaching fractions...badly? - What kind of candy-making trivia does one Geek convey? - Is the ending a good thing? Should we take the gift at face value? Or, if Willy Wonka is a child-killer, is he just trying to dump evidence? - And, what very different grades did the Geeks give this movie?Listen now for the answers to these and other sugary, flavorful, fizzy questions, as the Geeks present their Golden Tickets and hope to survive..."Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory."You can contact us at discerninggeeks@gmail.com. “You know I've smoked a lot of grass, Oh Lord I've popped a lot of pills…” – The Pusher Since before the dawn of heavy metal, RELAXERS have been a recurring theme in song lyrics. Whether revered with praise and appreciation or reviled through tales of tragedy and woe, one cannot deny the obvious power and impact RELAXERS have had on heavy music throughout the years. While there are an endless array of RELAXERS available in the world (both legal and illegal, natural and manmade), there are an equally endless variety of songs about them, so many in fact that we could do an entire episode called “Snowblind” although there's much more to metal than the not-so-secret South American plant powder for which Black Sabbath “unofficially” named their 4th album and John Pemberton “officially” used in his refreshingly stimulating soft drinks at the turn of the 20th century. We finally made it to “Nosober November”. Time to get ready to become “unfiltered & unredacted” as you “pass the shortest straw” and follow the bouncing 8-ball while embracing “the darkness inside you” and preparing your blotter for the dropper after you “go and pound some Molsons”. It's time to understand the “Indica vs Sativa” analogy and be ready to “go do some ayahuasca in the jungle” and “taste the rainbow” while congratulating your Ohio friends for finally “making it legal” when you JOIN US as we reflect on the various blessings and curses inherent in a variety of songs about RELAXERS. Today on Appalachian Vibes, we feature the soul folk artist Rebekah Todd, who is performing at Floyd Fest July 21-July 25. In her episode she discusses what it's like to be expected to be pretty and nice versus being seen and treated the full human that she is. My second guest is a Venezuelan American educational singer-songwriter, Carol Joy. She's made an incredible journey from Chemical engineering in Venezuela to neuroscience research in America. Combining music and neuroscience to teach children how their brains work so they can make healthy decisions. My third guest is Asheville's high energy psychedelic rock band, the Snozzberries. The Snozzberries recently and suddenly lost their drummer. Ian and Ethan discuss the loss of their friend and we talk about how they develop their sound. Something Mongo said yesterday about the choo-choo makes Bart pause. He asks Mongo if he knows why Hedley cares about the where the choo-choo is going? Mongo replies with a deeply philisophical, "Don't know. Mongo only pawn in game of life." Bart is convinced that he and Jim need to head out the railroad and do a little snooping. We transition to the site of the rail line being built. As the camera moves, Charlie comes into frame and heads to what looks like a large oak barrel. When he is not practicing law, he can be found turning back the clock at the gym or pretending to be a sommelier. His book, Reflections in Muddy Water, can be found online and many other regional bookstores. He claims the stories are all true but the names have been changed to protect the characters from themselves. Finally, he believes the snozzberries DO taste like snozzberries. We continue today with Bart reviewing the writ sent by Hedley Lamarr for Mongo's release. He determines it's legal and goes to wake him up. He comments how those schnitzengrubers can really wipe you out. He then throws a bucket of water at Mongo, waking him. Mongo yawns, breaking all of the chains holding him in place. Bart tells Mongo he is a free man but Mongo won't go. He says Sheriff Bart is the only man to ever whip Mongo. The Waco Kid says it looks like Mongo has taking a liking to Bart. Mongo looks sheepish and then declares, "Mongo straight!" Attorney and author, Brad Stephens grew up in Cassville, GA. Pop open your finest bottle of fizzy lifting drinks for GleeKast's very special coverage of Funeral, wherein innocent characters are sacrificed to the gods of plot and rushed characterizations. We'd love to tell you more about the episode, but even the slighting inkling in these show notes may cause Erica to have terrifying flashbacks to a certain 1971 classic children's film. It's intense. Almost as intense as John 'Dr. Car'l Stamos playing a reproductive rapist on Law & Order: SVU. But tell us just HOW intense by sending feedback to gleekast@gmail.com or entering the candyland that is our forums over at palavr.com. We'll be back in two weeks with our belated finale episode, where we hope to hear your top 6 musical performances of season 2 because after all, WE are the music makers and therefore WE are the dreamers of dreams. So dream big.
