“I couldn't afford a Plan B. It was all or nothing.” In this episode, Michael Dargie sits down with Venezuelan-American filmmaker Joel Novoa, a passionate storyteller whose journey winds through political unrest, deep personal reflection, and a relentless pursuit of creative expression. This episode is sponsored by my new book BRANDJITSU, helping you find, shape, and share your story with the world. Joel shares how his early life in Venezuela shaped his worldview, teaching him to move forward even when everything around him felt stuck. With both a legal background and a master's in screenwriting, Joel brings a unique lens to storytelling, one that honours the personal as much as the political. His work in film and television, including titles like Arrow, The Long Road Home, and the indie gem Day of Reckoning, speaks to his ability to navigate big industry machines while staying connected to the heart of a story. The conversation gets real about what it means to be a “creative rebel”—especially when your identity doesn't neatly fit into Hollywood's boxes. Joel talks about the fear that comes with creating, the drive to prove your worth, and the decision to fully commit to storytelling as his only path forward—no backup plan, no safety net. From the emotional cost of writing from your core to navigating stereotypes in the industry, Joel's candid honesty pulls no punches. He encourages emerging creatives to embrace the discomfort and keep pushing, because resistance, as he puts it, is a sign you're on the right track. This episode is a must-listen for anyone feeling the weight of expectation, battling imposter syndrome, or trying to break through the noise while staying true to themselves. It's not just about writing scripts—it's about writing your own narrative. Cool Things Joel Says “Sometimes the resistance is just telling you this is the place you have to go.” — Joel Novoa “I couldn't afford a Plan B. It was all or nothing.” — Joel Novoa “The stories I tell are the stories I've lived, or fought to understand.” — Joel Novoa “You can be terrified and still do the thing.” — Michael Dargie “If I don't put my full identity on the page, who will?” — Joel Novoa Episode Highlights [2:15] Origins in Venezuela | Joel reflects on his upbringing and how political instability shaped his desire to tell meaningful stories. [5:42] From Law to Film | He talks about his academic background and how a shift to storytelling was a calling, not a decision. The political crisis in Venezuela is back in headlines after incumbent dictator Nicolas Maduro 'won' Venezuela's recent election — an unverified result that the vast majority of Venezuelans and Americans believe to be illegitimate. As protests worsen in the region, Sean and Rachel are joined by Rachel's sister, Latin America expert Leah Compos to discuss the long history of political corruption in Venezuela and how the social media platform, X, is playing a major role in revealing exploitation in the country that many around the world aren't aware of.   They also share their fascinating conversation with Venezuelan-American journalist, activist, and former Miss Venezuela, Carmen Maria Montiel from earlier this week, where she provides more valuable insight on this issue and draws alarming parallels between the erosion of democratic norms in Venezuela and concerning trends in the U.S.   Follow Sean & Rachel on X: @SeanDuffyWI & @RCamposDuffy Learn more about your ad choices. How do we build the world we are longing for in the here and now? This is the question that orients the work of my friend, Sól Gonzalez. Sol is an intuitive coach who understands their work with others as the act of holding and mirroring. Their bio is included here at the end. But right now I want to tell you that I have learned and grown a lot through my relationship with Sól. While our friendship is fun, loving and personal. They also hold an archetypal energy. A way of being and sensing in the world that can feel quite different than how I go about the same effort. There is something rich and revelatory when I meet Sól at this juncture. You will appreciate this conversation. We cover lots of grounds. Some of Sól's story. Their approach to coaching. Their commitment to justice and how they contend with the intensity of living in a world that includes horrors such as what is happening in Gaza. While remaining connected to the good, the true and the beautiful. Definitely let me know what you take from this conversation. More About Sól: Sól (they/them), of solstice healing, is a white and indigenous Venezuelan-American intuitive process holder, space facilitator, and energy worker. They are a Certified Healing, Justice and Liberation life coach, culture worker, anti-oppression organizational consultant, and lifelong grief and love apprentice. They believe it is imperative to be building the world we are longing for in the here and now, in our relationships, “for our survival's sake”. That the differing collective crises we are living through, if midwived with intention, have the capacity to bring us towards the liberatory futures our descendents deserve. Sól is an aspiring abolitionist, a steadfast lover of possibility, and a student of the land. They relate to life, grief, love and justice with reverence, creativity and devotion. Their approach and gifts are best suited for those ready for personal and/or collective change. Sól is a descendant of the Carib/Karinha Indians of the Northeast region of Venezuela, a descendant of people from the Levant region as well as from Southern Spain. They have their own practice under solstice healing as well as are a co-founding member of the worker cooperative, Facilitate Change. Is this because of some deficiency in the education levels of the current voters? Ponniah argues that the left has paid too little attention to material, financial inequality during the past several decades, focusing more on cultural differences within a given society, and that it is highly desirable now to re-prioritize. When you compare and contrast the similarities in what took place in Venezuela to what is transpiring here in the United States, it should be a wake-up call and warning that the beacon of liberty is at risk. Debbie D’Souza was born in Venezuela and moved to America as a young girl. What she has witnessed through her family and her own eyes is incredibly alarming. We will discuss Debbie's move to the United States, her love and passion for liberty, and in greater detail⏤the perfect recipe for socialism that is brewing right here in the USA. When polls show that Democratic voters view socialism in a more favorable light than capitalism, then we have some serious soul searching. The questions we need to be asking are; how real is the danger that America is turning socialist? Will Americans still see the beacon of liberty shine at our 250-year mark? In fact, polls show that Democratic voters view socialism more favorably than capitalism. How real is the danger that America is turning socialist? Will we see the beacon of liberty still shine at our 250-year mark? In this special episode of Viewpoint This Sunday, we will explore the signs of socialism with experts in their field, with an emphasis on healthcare, our faith, and bold thoughts for a more desirable outcome. Socialized Medicine | Government-run mandated single-payer health insurance has been at the top of the list for Democrats. What are the biggest differences that people should know between socialized government-controlled medicine and free-market healthcare? What factors do pre-existing conditions play into the process? What are the biggest drivers in the cost of healthcare? And more importantly what about the quality of care, how is this compromised with a single-payer system? President Biden last week signed a series of healthcare-related directives to revitalize Obamacare; he described these actions as reversing "the damage" done by former President Trump, "I'm not initiating any new law, any new aspect of the law," Biden said. What does the future of healthcare in America look like? Dr. Jane Orient is Executive director of the AAPS, Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, President of Doctors for disaster preparedness, and a general internal medicine specialist in Tucson Arizona. Knowing the Signs of Socialism | We often hear the comparisons between what took place in Venezuela and what is happening in the US today, are these comparisons exaggerated, or might they predict a future that most Americans would object to? Debbie D’Souza was born in Venezuela and understands the variables that changed Venezuela from a once-promising future to a third-world country run by dictators. Katty Kay and Carlos Watson discuss whether American democracy is in crisis, and what its future may hold. They are joined by Julius Krein, of the journal American Affairs, and award-winning Venezuelan-American journalist Mariana Atencio. Mariana argues that America risks descending into a crisis similar to that of her native Venezuela if its democracy is not shored up and valued by its citizens. Julius outlines how the nation’s widening polarisation is damaging for its democracy. Today I am talking with my friend Andrea DeLeon. Over the course of 6 years, Andrea earned her degree in holistic nutrition, competed in fitness competitions, became a health coach and worked as personal trainer, hoping one of these avenues would be the solution to what seemed like an endless, vicious cycle of yo-yo dieting and binge eating. However, it wasn’t until Andrea began to do the internal work, focusing on psychology, emotions and self-love that her life truly changed. Once she accepted that she was an emotional eater and was taught various coping strategies and self-soothing tools for dealing with emotions, she finally achieved the freedom she had been seeking. Freedom from food, body, mind, and self. In addition to earning her body image and self-love coaching certification, Andrea has been working side-by-side with Tony Robbins’ personal trainer, Billy Beck III, which has taught her the science and evidence-based tools behind exercise and the psychology of nutrition. She now has the privilege of using what she's learned to coach amazing women in her Ditch the Scale Academy, helping them fully transform their lives at a deeper level by letting go of their past stories and beliefs and stepping into their power, letting go of their food and body struggles and unleashing their ultimate feminine potential. Tune in to hear how Andrea’s moves to the Unites States with her mom, brother and sister was a bit traumatic, how she learned English and what it was like making friends at an early age in multiple cities. Andrea also shares her favorite Venezuelan dishes as well as her favorite holiday after Christmas. We also get into the cultural expectations of getting the best grades and having the best career and how Andrea went from Bio Medical Engineering to becoming a Nutritionist. This is such a great story. Andrea also shares her very personal breast implant story with us today. Why she got them and what happened after a decade of having them and her thoughts on the whole process now. All this and more on the Venezuelan culture, which Andrea shares is the friendliest on today’s show! STEVE WILCOX is a Venezuelan born actor who had early success in American Me. It was rap icon Tupac Shakur's favorite movie and he sampled one of Steve's lines in Death Around the Corner. Working on the film was a watershed experience that still keeps Steve pursuing his dream 25 years later. (36:35)        EPISODE NOTES: The 1992 film “American Me” was Edward James Olmos’ directorial debut. But the movie also marked the professional acting debut for STEVE WILCOX who played teenaged J.D., the white kid who becomes a member of a Chicano gang in 1950s East LA. William Forsythe was cast as the adult J.D. and Steve had to adopt some of Forsythe’s mannerisms and physical attributes. As Steve tells me in VENEZUELAN-AMERICAN ME, he was fitted with an unwieldy dental prosthetic that gave him an unintended lisp, which he had to learn to speak without. A few years later, Steve worked with rap icon Tupac Shakur in “Gang Related” who told him that he’d actually – unbeknownst to Steve -- sampled some of his dialogue from “American Me” on his track “Death Around the Corner.” Tupac promised to give Steve a copy of it the next time he saw him, but was shot and killed a few weeks later. Playing a white kid in a Latin culture came naturally to Steve. Born and raised in Venezuela to a Canadian father and a Venezuelan mother, Steve says he was always the whitest kid he knew. To make matters worse, his mother dressed him in nothing but white clothing (shoes and boots, too) for five years as part of a pact she’d made with patron saint Jose Gregorio Hernandez who, she believed, answered her prayers to save her young son who was dying of spinal meningitis. Steve is a survivor, and for 25 years has been a mostly-working Hollywood actor. Given his particular look (he’s been compared to Tom Waits, Nick Nolte and Ron Perlman) he often plays bad guys, which he loves to do. Thanks to his connections in LA’s growing Venezuelan artistic community, Steve has recently appeared in a number of Venezuelan movies, including “La Hora Cero” and “Libertador.” BTW: Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is a friend. The charismatic maestro used to call Steve “Gringo” but now has a new nickname for him: “Creepy.” And it has nothing to do with the kind of roles he plays.
