Brandon Butler and Nathan “Shags” McLeod sit down with freshwater fishing hall of fame and fly fishing guru Mark Van Patton at Big Rock Candy Mountain to discuss the Missouri Trout Opener.Every year thousands of die-hard anglers line the banks at one of Missouri's trout parks for the opening day of catch-and-keep trout season. In years past, anglers have faced frigid winter temperatures, snow, sleet and ice, as well as sunshine and springlike weather all in the attempt of catching an elusive lunker. This Missouri tradition not only creates memories, but some of the biggest fish stories you've ever heard! The opening of the catch-and-keep trout fishing season on March 1 is an important Missouri tradition, marking the beginning of a season that runs until Oct. 31. The season officially begins at 6:30 a.m. at Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon, Montauk State Park near Salem, and Roaring River State Park near Cassville. In addition to premier trout fishing, visitors to the state's trout parks can enjoy miles of hiking trails, lodging and camping options, and on-site dining facilities. For more info:Big Rock Candy Mountain WebsiteSpecial thanks to:Living The Dream Outdoor PropertiesSuperior Foam Insulation LLCDoolittle TrailersScenic Rivers TaxidermyConnect with Driftwood Outdoors:FacebookInstagramYouTubeEmail:info@driftwoodoutdoors.com

On May 21, 2023, Dr. John Forsyth, a 49-year-old ER doctor, was due to work the evening shift at Mercy Hospital in Cassville, Missouri. He had already worked the overnight shift the day before and finished up at 7 am. After that he went to crash for a few hours before starting his next shift that night.  This was a normal day for John. He had a habit of pulling long shifts and working between 80 and 100 hours per week. But John never showed up for work that night, and it wasn't long before his family and colleagues realized that he had disappeared. John Forsyth was a hard working, well respected doctor and a father of eight children, but he also had a complicated personal life, one that he kept compartmentalized. One that involved an expensive divorce, a new fiancée, and a crypto company that he co-founded with his brother that had been involved in some shady dealings. What happened to Dr. Forsyth? Was he kidnapped by someone with bad intentions? Did he walk away on his own? Could he have been living a double life? If you have a case you'd like Catherine Townsend to look into, you can reach out to us at our Hell and Gone Murder Line at 678-744-6145. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Who do you look at as someone that has helped form who you are?  Well, other than my Dad and family, Col James Bowers comes to mind first for me. As a sophomore in high school I meet Col Bowers, he amazed me with his career and high expectations. I was a little surprised how I reacted when I heard the news of his passing.  Mad at myself for not staying in touch with him. However very grateful to have known him and learned from him.  RIP Col. Colonel (Airborne Ranger) James M. BowersU.S. Army RetiredJim Bowers, also known as "Ranger Jim" and "Cowboy Jim", was born in a coal mining camp named Cassville, in West Virginia on August 14, 1930. The Angels recruited Jim for their “Ranger Patrol” on October 1, 2022 at his home in Spring Harbor, Columbus, Georgia. He was 92.Jim was a strong and dedicated family man who was blessed with a sweet, beautiful and totally dedicated Army wife, Kathryn Gee Bowers, affectionately known as "Kacky". Jim and Kacky were married at Fort Riley, Kansas in 1956, and together they raised two exemplary sons, Jim Junior and Clarke. After graduating from the University of West Virginia where he received a regular Army commission from ROTC, Jim served thirty proud years on active duty and commanded at each level from Platoon through Brigade. He served with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. He was immensely proud of his Airborne Wings and Ranger Tab, and his favorite and most rewarding assignment was Director of the Ranger Department from 1973-1977.During his military career Jim received many service awards to include the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal "V" with 24 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star, the Ranger Tab, the Combat Infantryman Badge and Master Parachutist Badge. Jim also attended numerous military schools during his career to include the Army War College.Upon retiring from active duty, he taught JR ROTC at Hardaway High School in Columbus, Georgia for ten years and then moved to Florida in 1993. He returned to Columbus in 2006.In addition to his love for his family and country, Jim had a passion for the great outdoors and had a special adoration for animals. Some of his favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing, playing and hunting with his dogs, riding and driving his horses, water skiing and flying small airplanes.Jim is survived by his two sons James Bowers, Jr. of Henderson, Nevada and Clarke Bowers of Dawsonville, Georgia.Jim Junior and Clarke are planning a wonderful, uplifting Celebration of Life, for both Jim and their mother Kacky, which will be announced in the near future. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Paws Humane, 4900 Milgen Road, P.O. Georgia has a long history, and towns tend to come and go.  Auraria in Lumpkin County was the thriving center of the Georgia gold rush for a time, now it's really just a memory.  White Sulphur Springs in Hall County used to be a tourist destination.  One of my favorite subjects to research so far has been the town of Cassville in Bartow County, which ended it's existence as a different town in a different county.  Names are important.

To find out more about the Wisconsin Great River Road please check out the website www.WiGRR.com to find out about Stonefield Historic Site visit https://stonefield.wisconsinhistory.org/https://www.facebook.com/stonefieldhistoricsite/Susan: You know, there is something about the Mississippi River that just makes such a connection with people from all over the world. And we do get visitors from all over the world. We are just like in the heart of this beautiful area. We love to be a part of the Great River Road, and we are happy that we are one of the Interpretive Centers on the highway.Bob: The Wisconsin Great River Road Podcast. This time, [I’m] speaking with Susan Caya-Slusser. Susan is with the Wisconsin Historical Society. I visited the Stonefield historic site, and I’ll tell you what: That place was history alive. Susan, that place is amazing.Susan: It is. Yes, Stonefield is one of 12 historic sites operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society. It’s kind of a hidden gem down in Cassville, Wisconsin. It’s located right on the Great River Road. If you want to get to Cassville, there are so many things to do. There is even a car ferry. Yes, we need to get more people down there because there’s so much to see and so much to do once you get in the area.Bob: When we were walking through Stonefield – and there are a bunch of old farm implement in there – to be that close to some of that stuff and to look to see how big it was and to know what it does, that’s pretty cool. The little placard told me the story.Susan: Yes. So how Stonefield came to be is, it started in 1948. There was a great renewal and interest in our farming history. Folks were moving off the farm [and] they were moving into the cities. We wanted to make sure we didn’t lose this rich history, so that was what started it all. And Stonefield opened up for the first time in 1953.Bob: I couldn’t believe how cool the Stonefield site was. Was that the original Cassville where all the buildings are and the main street and you’re walking around the schoolhouses?Susan: When you come into Stonefield, there are different components that you’ll get to go on tour. There the homestead of Nelson Dewey. There is an entrance into what was Governor Nelson Dewey’s barn – this large, beautiful stone barn. There’s the State Ag [Agricultural] Museum. There’s a 1901 progressive farmhouse. But then you walk through this beautiful covered bridge that was built in 1964, and it takes you into a recreated village. The cool thing about it is a lot of the buildings that you’re seeing are old schoolhouses from across Wisconsin that have been repurposed. To recreate a village, what would it have been like for a farmer in 1900? This is the recreation in the people’s minds of the Wisconsin Historical Society and UW Extension what a farming village would have been like in 1900. If you visited the schoolhouse, that was actually the Muddy Hollow schoolhouse that was just up the road from where we sit today.Bob: I was thinking if my kids were in there, they’d be like. ‘How do you get Wi-Fi in here?’Susan: We are thrilled and we are fortunate that we get school visitors from not just Wisconsin, but also Illinois and Iowa that come and visit us in Stonefield. It is wonderful to be able to compare and contrast how things have changed over time, even to the boys sitting on one side of classroom and girls sitting on the other, even to the point where the boys and girls have to use separate doors. It’s just a way to take the kids back and make them think, and also hopefully make them appreciate what they have today.Bob: You mentioned just a minute ago about appreciating things that you have. I’m guessing anybody that walks through the State Agricultural Museum that looked at the old metal tires [and] the old iron tires, they would appreciate immediately the rubber tires we get to drive on today.Susan: Oh, yes. You kind of see a progressive change over time as you move through the State Agricultural Museum, even to one of the first that we have, we have a 1932 Allis Chalmers tractor parked way back in the corner. If you look at it, it actually has tires from an airplane.Bob: Is that why they’re bald?Susan: Yes. That is why they are big and bald the way they are. One of our claims to fame is that we have America’s oldest tractor. We have the McCormick Auto-Mower. The tractor we have is one of two prototypes made to exhibit at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1900.Bob: Besides the beauty of seeing Stonefield in its natural state, I’m assuming you guys probably have different events going on through the year.Susan: Yes. In June we do Agricultural Appreciation Day, tying in with June Dairy Month. In September we have our annual Great River Road Fall Fest. This one is a favorite of mine because it really brings the village to life – the sounds, the smell, the horse and tractors. It just really takes you back to a different time. One of our most popular events is in October, and that is what we call our “Safe and Spooky Event.” This is put on by the Friends of Stonefield and Nelson Dewey State Park – it’s our volunteer group. What happens is the whole village is transformed. Different volunteer groups come into the village, and all the buildings get transformed to be a little more spooky and eerie for Halloween. You will see everything and anyone at “Safe and Spooky Halloween.” All costumes are welcome.Bob: Susan, how do people find out more about Stonefield, the Wisconsin Historic Site?Susan: There are two ways I would recommend. The first is just our webpage, which is stonefield.wisconsinhistory.org. The second is we have a very active Facebook page, which is just Stonefield Historic Site. That’s where you can find out more information about our events. There’s something for everyone when you come and visit Stonefield.

Something Mongo said yesterday about the choo-choo makes Bart pause. He asks Mongo if he knows why Hedley cares about the where the choo-choo is going? Mongo replies with a deeply philisophical, "Don't know. Mongo only pawn in game of life." Bart is convinced that he and Jim need to head out the railroad and do a little snooping. We transition to the site of the rail line being built. As the camera moves, Charlie comes into frame and heads to what looks like a large oak barrel. Bart tells Mongo he is a free man but Mongo won't go. He says Sheriff Bart is the only man to ever whip Mongo. The Waco Kid says it looks like Mongo has taking a liking to Bart. Former Springfield News-Leader columnist Mike O’Brien wrote in May of 2001 that in 1946, a publishing house in Kansas put out a 32-page booklet called “True Stories of Peculiar People and Unusual Events in the Ozarks.” It was written by former Kansas City newspaper reporter William R. Draper. Among the topic included were: the guy in Arkansas who wanted to build an Egyptian-style pyramid, and the lady from Cassville who was once dubbed “The Witch of Roaring River.” But the story that caught Mike O’Brien’s eye was about a character known as “The Angel of Ava.” It told, said Mike O’Brien, “of mysterious mailings of money to residents in and around the Douglas County community” early in 1940. If you want an unsolved mystery, this is one of the best: a man or woman who positively impacted the lives of a handful of people for unknown reasons, who to this day has remained anonymous, with few if any clues pointing toward the person’s identity. Much like the story fascinated Mike O’Brien, the

Born in Cassville, Georgia in 1928, Lamar Weaver moved with his mother, a nurse, to Birmingham when he was in elementary school. The family lived in a downtown neighborhood where he played with Italian, Jewish and Black children, often getting into trouble. By the time he graduated from high school, Weaver had become a Christian. He decided to enter the ministry and the Civil Rights Movement, which was getting underway in Birmingham. In addition, Weaver ran for public office against Bull Conner in the City of Birmingham. In order to pay the bills while he was in Bible College, he worked as an ambulance driver and metallurgist for Tennessee Coal & Iron (TCI). Weaver's employment came to an end in early March of 1957 after he accompanied Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth and his wife, Ruby Shuttlesworth, to the Union Terminal Station in downtown Birmingham where the three shared a bench in the "Whites only" waiting room. Listen to Lamar Weaver describe the scene at Terminal Station and the reaction of an angry White mob to his involvement in the Shuttlesworth's attempt to desegregate that public facility.
