Citizens' Climate Lobby

In this episode of Citizens Climate Radio, hosts Horace Mo and Erica Valdez bring together diverse voices to discuss current efforts to address climate change. Horace Mo speaks with Ann E Burg, a celebrated author known for compelling historical novels for young readers, about her newly published novel “Force of Nature–A Novel of Rachel Carson” which opens a new door for readers to experience the life of Carson, a well-known environmental pioneer in the US, by reading her field notes and Ann's innovative writing. Erica Valdez discusses the American fossil fuel divestment movement, highlighting the work of younger generations. She has a conversation with Aly Horton, another student taking the initiative to promote the fossil fuel divestment movement on their campus at Northern Arizona University. In the Resilience Corner, Tamara Staton speaks on mastering the banjo and how this uniquely relates to addressing climate change. Finally, we have a Good News story from Peterson Toscano regarding South Africa's energy supply. Ann E Burg Explores Rachel Carson's Life In this episode, author Ann E Burg dives into her latest work, “Force of Nature.” This novel is inspired by Rachel Carson's groundbreaking environmental book Silent Spring. It is beautifully illustrated by Sophie Blackall. After World War II, DDT became a common pesticide in neighborhoods and farms; however, it had dire consequences for ecosystems, entering the food chain and harming various species. This alarming situation inspired Rachel Carson to write and publish her now-famous book, “Silent Spring”, in 1962. Ann E Burg tells us how Carson's book "explored DDT but also started with a fable for tomorrow. It suggested what life would be like if spring came and no birds were there to sing."   Ann E. Burg considers Rachel Carson a role model for her scientific rigor and environmental advocacy. Carson's ability to illuminate the beauty and complexity of nature-inspired Burg to see the world differently. This novel, “Force of Nature,” is not merely a recounting of Carson's life but an immersive experience of her world. Burg hopes readers will see the world through Carson's eyes and appreciate the interconnectedness of all life. About Ann E Burg Ann E Burg's debut novel, “All the Broken Pieces,” was named an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, a Jefferson Cup award winner, and an IRA Notable Book for a Global Society, among its many honors. Her subsequent novels in verse have garnered multiple awards and starred reviews. “Serafina's Promise” was named an ALA Notable, a Parents' Choice Gold Award Winner, and an NAACP Image Award finalist. “Unbound” won the New York Historical Society Children's History Book Prize, the Christopher Award, and an Arnold Adoff Poetry Honor. “Flooded–A Requiem for Johnstown” was a Bank Street College Claudia Lewis Award winner, a Bank Street College Best Children's Book (with outstanding merit), and a Junior Library Guild selection. Before becoming a full-time writer, Burg worked as an English teacher for ten years. She lives in Rhinebeck, New York, with her family. To learn more about Ann E Burg, visit her online at anneburg.com The Student-Led Drive for Fossil Fuel Divestment Erica Valdez discusses the fossil fuel divestment movement, highlighting the efforts on her campus, Northern Arizona University (NAU). Climate change is a human-caused phenomenon in which the fossil fuel industry plays a significant role. Erica dives into what divestment is and how it may be one of the most effective steps that institutions can take to slow climate change. Erica invites Aly Horton, president of Fossil Free NAU, a student-led group demanding complete divestment. Aly explains the club's efforts and goals to hold the university accountable to its environmental commitments.  Aly and Erica also discuss recent pushback from the university administration. Nevertheless, Fossil Free NAU remains determined to continue its mission because it is just a small chapter of an international movement. Although it may be difficult, many institutions have already divested from fossil fuels. Aly shares inspiring advice to organizers worldwide who are working towards divestment. Resilience Corner For this month's Resilience Corner, Tamara Staton draws parallels between her desire to master the banjo and the overwhelming task of addressing climate change. When practicing banjo, she faces common emotional barriers like fear, perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and information overload. We also face these barriers when we talk about climate change. Tamara discusses why it is important to recognize these feelings, encouraging listeners to embrace imperfections and persistent efforts. To learn more about building resilience in the face of climate challenges, visit the Resilience Hub. You can also email Tamara at radio @ citizensclimate.org or text or leave a message at 619-512-9646. Good News! Peterson Toscano shares a good news story from Limpopo Province, South Africa, where earlier this month he was staying in a game reserve. He reflects on the progress in South Africa's energy sector since his previous stay, highlighting the severe scheduled power outages known as load-shedding issues caused by unreliable coal-powered plants. He notes that significant changes have occurred since President Cyril Ramaphosa raised the licensing threshold for private power generation, leading to over 1,000 registered renewable energy projects. These projects, primarily solar and wind, are now providing nearly 4,500 megawatts of new capacity, significantly reducing power outages and transforming the country's energy landscape. Hello #AmWriters, Jess here. When Rosalie Haizlett emailed to introduce me to her work, I was intrigued. At the time, I was working on the marketing section of a book proposal, trying to thick- and thin-slice the book's potential audience and explain why my fanbase as well as new readers might purchase this particular book I was describing. So when Rosalie emailed to tell me about her forthcoming book, Tiny Worlds of the Appalachian Mountains: An Artist's Journey my head exploded. How do you convince a publisher to let you write about such tiny worlds, no matter how beautiful your art and eloquent your writing? Rosalie generously answered my questions in the spirit they were asked: with a genuine love for small presses, books about very specific subjects, and wonder for her process and her end product. As a bonus, I found out about some of the most incredible fellowship opportunities for writers and illustrators, ones I'm tempted to apply for myself! I hope you enjoy this episode as much I did. We've produced almost 300 episodes of the podcast Light Hearted in the past five years. Most of the interviews we've done have been a half hour to an hour. We realize that listening to an hour-long podcast is not something everyone wants to do, so we're introducing something we call Light Hearted Lite. In this new series, some favorite interviews from the past five years have been edited down to around 10 to 20 minutes. We'll still keep posting the longer episodes as well. For this first edition of Light Hearted Lite, we're going back to episode one from June 2019. The person interviewed is the award winning writer and illustrator of children's books Sophie Blackall. Her books have won many awards, and her children's book Hello Lighthouse, which she wrote and illustrated, won the 2019 Caldecott medal.

It's an extraordinarily original story about finding home, power, truth and above all love. About The Beatryce ProphecyA magical medieval tale from two masters, Newbery Medal-winning Kate DiCamillo and Caldecott Medal-winning Sophie Blackall - a fantastical meditation on fate, love and the power of words to spell the world. We shall all, in the end, be led to where we belong. We shall all, in the end, find our way home.In a time of war, a mysterious child appears at the monastery of the Order of the Chronicles of Sorrowing. Gentle Brother Edik finds the girl, Beatryce, curled in a stall, wracked with fever, coated in dirt and blood and holding fast to the ear of Answelica the recalcitrant goat. As the monk nurses Beatryce to health, he uncovers her dangerous secret - one that imperils them all.And so it is that a girl with a head full of stories must venture into a dark wood in search of the castle of a king who wishes her dead. But should she lose her way, Beatryce knows that those who love her - a wild-eyed monk, a man who had once been king, a boy with a terrible sword and a goat with a head as hard as stone - will never give up searching for her. Hello, and welcome back to the 20th episode of my podcast! Today on The Series Review I will be reviewing the series Ivy and Bean, written by Annie Barrows and illustrated by Sophie Blackall. The Ivy and Bean books are funny and perfect for early chapter book readers. Ivy and Bean never meant to like each other, but when Bean's prank on her older sister goes wrong, Ivy helps Bean hide. They become best friends and have so many cool adventures, like making a camp, treasure hunting, and more! I love this series! Thanks to the people who have sent in voice messages, email, and who have left reviews in apple podcasts. If you have a book or series for me to review on the show, please email me at: theseriesreview13@gmail.com. Have a great week! Send me a voice message on anchor: https://anchor.fm/riya-b13/message

An interview with Farida Zaman, author-illustrator of I Want to Be: A Gutsy Girl's ABC, and illustrator of more than a dozen picture books and early readers. Hear about her love of fractured fairy tales, her dedication to creating a signature style, and her own experience of being a gutsy girl when she chose a life in the arts. 20 minutes. All ages. A full interview transcript is available at CabinTales.ca. Show Notes [0:00] Intro [1:10] Interview with Farida Zaman FZ: I illustrate and write now. I used to only illustrate. … my debut author-illustrator project with Second Story Press came out in spring 2020 called I Want to Be: A Gutsy Girl's ABC. CA: … Do you have projects that you're writing and illustrating both right now? FZ: Yes. … I'm illustrating a picture book written by my daughter, Layla Ahmad. …And I'm … finished a manuscript that I'm fleshing into a book dummy. …   [2:10] CA: …Do you work on more than one book at a time? FZ: Very much so. … I also do educational work … schoolbooks and book covers …. I used to do much more editorial and design and advertising…. I'm working on a collection of jigsaw puzzles … I wear a couple of different hats.   [2:50] CA: …. Is there a place where you get your best ideas from? FZ: My best ideas come from what I see around me. I take a lot of notes. …. I like trying out new things. … So my audience will see something different in my work. But I try and keep my look as unique as possible.   [3:40] CA: Are there some favorite projects? FZ: …Years ago I did a … on Moghul emperors, and the author was Rina Singh. [The book is The Foolish Men of Agra.] And it was really really exciting to research the history of these people. I'm drawn to textures, textiles, and cultures…it kind of gave me the opportunity to study and to decorate the book. …   [4:15] CA: Have you ever based a story or illustration on your own childhood? FZ: … Emotions perhaps. The Gutsy Girl came out from a place of shooting for the stars. …That was always my goal growing up. … My parents originally wanted me to study something way more academic. … I wanted to show the family thatyou can make a living doing what you love. …   [5:30] CA: …Have you ever been inspired by another artist's work? FZ: … Jane Ray -- she's a British writer -- she's always inspired me. …She has a great knack of retellings … her work just looks like tapestry to me. …   [6:30] CA: Have you illustrated fairy tales or classic myths or anything like that yourself? FZ: … Jack and the Beanstalk…. It's sort of like a fractured fairy tale…. It can be really exciting that way.   [6:55] CA: Have you ever written or illustrated anything spooky, scary? FZ: I've done things about anxiety…. Like monsters … versus a little girl. … But nothing really kind of out of the box scary….   [7:15] CA: Do you do school visits? FZ: I do. I illustrated up book on yoga…by Kathy Beliveau. … that was a very fun book to work with students … The art component is really fun, drawing your favorite pose.   [8:00] CA: … What would your journal look like? Like, is it messy? Is it organized? FZ: … I'd like to be the person that shows it on Instagram page by page and it looks so delicious and beautiful. Not my sketchbook. … I have a sketchbook for picture book ideas, where I do storyboarding, …stick figures and …notes. I think that's really important. …When you get stuck with the words, it really helps that you can draw because then you see where the gap might be and how melds together ….   [9:30] CA: Do you have any recommendations to young artists or young writers for getting or keeping or organizing ideas? FZ: I think keeping a sketchbook is crucial. … Find inspiration in where you are and, you know, what you like to do also.   [9:50] CA:... Are you a planner? Or do you just see what you're going to come up with? FZ: … I'm not a planner. I do things spontaneously. … And then I start tweaking. … When you plan too much, you can lose certain components of the story. …It's really interesting to look at the older version of a story that may be becoming a book… It's so exciting when you see that happen.   [11:30] CA: Do you have any favorite plot twists… or surprises? FZ: I like a good giggle. … something different, something that changes something old to something new.   [12:15] CA: Do you have any techniques for making an interesting middle? FZ: The pacing of the story is so important. …. Sometimes we tend to come to a climax a little sooner in the book…. It's like a jigsaw puzzle … And sometimes the clicking takes a long longer than you think it might. … It really helps if there's some kind of twist in the middle … It is important to look at the story in different ways….   [13:45] CA: …Do you have a favorite first line…? FZ: I like a direct beginning and something that takes you straight into the story. …introduce your character. … who is it and what does she want? …. I like going straight to the point.   [14:30] CA: Nice. Do you have a favourite … ending? FZ: For picture books, I think circular stories work the best… For a child, it's a nice warm cozy feeling.   [15:05] CA: Do you have a favorite POV to write from? FZ: A child's point of view. I tend to work … in present tense… I find that kids relate to that. It's happening when they're listening to it. …   [15:30] CA: And what scared you as a kid? FZ: The dark. As a kid, I was a very anxious child …. People are more open to talking about it now. … In the past, people like myself growing up, it wasn't easily dealt with….   [16:30] CA: Did you tell stories around the campfire as a kid? FZ: … Later on maybe, as a teenager…. But not as a child. CA: You don't like scary stories. FZ: Not particularly. …. I think monster stories are really cute, but I like friendly characters. I'm not into developing mean personalities. CA: Do you have a favorite sweet monster or funny monster? FZ: I love Cookie Monster. I love Grover. Sesame Street. I like that kind of monster. … Maurice Sendak's monsters. The classic. CA: Yes, he said he based those on his relatives who ruined every Sunday dinner. FZ: I can relate to that.   [17:30] CA: Do you collect anything? FZ: I love collecting things. I collect bowls. … I collect toys. … that are little retro. … I love collecting children's picture books. … CA:I think it's a shame that so many people never touch a picture book once their kid's over 5. …   [18:10] CA: What would you say is the hardest thing about illustrating or writing a good book? FZ: I think word count can be quite challenging. …How do you make that work within 500 words or, tops, 700 words? How do you make it really interesting and stylized and rich, visually?   [18:45] CA: … What do you do to prepare to make a setting? … FZ: … I'll go online and look at furniture and … what she should wear, her neighborhood….. I think layouts are really important. … And the perspective …. To create drama, I think it's really important. And creating a sense of contrast. Big and small. I think you can do that in your illustrations and you can do it in your words as well.   [20:05] CA: Do you have any favorite fictional characters? FZ: … The Big Red Lollipop. … by Rukhsana Khan. It's illustrated by Sophie Blackall. It's a lovely book. Personality really shines through. …. The eyes just tell you a story…   [20:50] CA: Do you have any exercises you would recommend for developing the character? FZ: I think it's important to know what your style is… have a sketchbook filled with sketches of realistic, and then pare it down to something more simple. … it's good to have different styles, but there should be a limit to it. Otherwise people will never know you. …   [22:00] CA: That's great. … Thanks so much. …   [22:15] Farida Zaman introduces herself FZ: Hi. I'm Farida Zaman. I'm an author and an illustrator. I illustrate picture books. And I'm writing picture books as well now. I've been doing this for the past three decades now, and I just love what I do. In my early years, I used to do a lot of editorial work as well, and I used to print and design. In between writing and illustrating, I also run workshops and art classes, too, for mainly adults.   [23:00] Find out more about Farida Zaman You can hear more creative writing advice from Farida Zaman on Cabin Tales Special Episode X: “Picture a Story.” You can find out more about Farida Zaman and her books from her website at FaridaZaman.com.   [23:45] Thanks and coming up on the podcast I'll be back next week with leftovers from my interview with Kate Inglis, author for all ages. The Creativity Project, edited by Colby SharpThis collection of prompts and responses from dozens of well-known children’s authors is the brainchild of teacher and literary advocate Colby Sharp (5 Questions with Mr. Sharp), who invited some of the best storytellers in Kidlit to share a prompt. Then the artists swapped prompts and let their imaginations run wild. The results appear in The Creativity Project book in the form of stories, drawings, poems, and comics. A section titled Prompts for You, is a call to action at the end that encourages readers to create their own awesome works of art. In the first episode, Jeremy and Cindy talk about the origins of navigation in early society, and there's a trivia question with prizes to be sent to the first two listeners with the correct answer. Entries should be emailed to jeremy@uslhs.org, and it should be specified that the entry is answering the trivia question in Light Hearted episode 1. The featured interview is with Sophie Blackall, the award winning author and illustrator of the children's book "Hello Lighthouse." The charming book, winner of the 2019 Caldecott Medal as the most distinguished American picture book of the year for children, opens with the lines, "On the highest rock of a tiny island at the edge of the world stands a lighthouse. It is built to last forever." Co-host Cindy Johnson, operations manager of Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses We hope you enjoy this new podcast. There will be new episodes every Monday, with extra episodes some weeks. Future episodes will include interviews with lighthouse preservationists, historians, and authors from around the U.S., and even from other countries. If you have ideas for features, you can email Jeremy at jeremy@uslhs.org.

It just seemed to make sense to do a book this week that could kill two birds with one stone. Betsy and Kate haven't done any picture books by Muslim-American (or, in this case, Muslim-Canadian) authors. So Betsy took a look at New York Public Library's 100 Children's Books, 100 Years list and selected Big Red Lollipop. And who did the illustrations? The latest double Caldecott Award winner, Sophie Blackall. Of course, this is a sister book. Betsy is the older sister. Kate is the little sister. So how exactly are they going to take this book of younger sister brattiness? The two also consider what ungodly suburban mom came up with the idea of goodie bags in the first place, Betsy gets to yell, "REVENGE!!!" several times, and Kate keeps bringing up Ariana Grande. Show Notes: - Correct us if we're wrong, Canadians. Are your goodie bags called "loot bags". And when, gentle readers, did gift bags become a standard presence at birthday parties? - This the video of Rukhsana Khan telling this story from her (the little sister's) point of view. You have to watch this. Heck, skip listening to this podcast and just view this instead. Then let's find places for her to speak publicly here in the States, because we want to see her talk NOW. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8UQWdhhy8s - Betsy believed that her mother said that the odd board game she remembered from my youth was called Count Your Chickens. We have since discovered that this is not true. It was actually called (and you can understand why none of us remembered the name) A Chicken in Every Plot. It was sold by a company called Animal Town which specialized in these odd little games that had names like "Madison Avenue", "Dam Builders", and "Save the Whales". Remember, this is why we invented the internet, people. - A cookie to anyone who can name me a villainous elephant in a children's book. Go! - For the complete Show Notes please visit: http://blogs.slj.com/afuse8production/2019/02/05/fuse-8-n-kate-big-red-lollipop-by-rukhsana-khan
