Scott McKain is my guest today. Scott's matchless experiences have continued throughout his life. They range from playing the villain in a film that Roger Ebert called one of the 50 “great movies” in cinema history to being booked to speak by Arnold Schwarzenegger for an event on the White House lawn with the President in the audience; from being the author of business books named among the “year's ten best” to membership of multiple Boards of Directors. The tapestry of Scott McKain's distinctive experiences have blended to create the inimitable content that makes him one of the world's most in-demand business experts and speakers Scott first became interested in business — and creating Ultimate Customer Experiences® — while helping in the family business, the grocery store in his hometown of Crothersville, Indiana. By age 21, Scott had chatted with the President in the Oval Office, lunched with the President of Brazil, had a private meeting with the Chairman of General Motors, and dined with the real-life Colonel Sanders. These unique experiences as a youth inspired both a passion for the platform and a fascination with business and leadership that continues to this day. Scott has delivered over 2000 presentations in 36 countries across six of the seven continents helping audiences create more compelling connections, provide ultimate customer experiences and stand out personally and professionally. Scott shares his distinctive ideas and iconic speaking style to the most important events in the world and has been honored with the following: Currently “Corporate Educator in Residence” at High Point University, named by U.S. News & World Report as the nation's “most innovative” university. What it Takes to Be Extraordinary in All You Do We often accomplish more by doing less. Activity is the anesthesia of the modern person. When we stay insanely busy we think we are accomplishing something but we are just staying insanely busy. Ask yourself, what’s important and am I accomplishing it! "We all have same number of hours and minutes in a day. It’s what we do with those that determine if we have an ordinary or extraordinary life." - Mark Sanborn Mark Sanborn was recently named to the Top Leadership Experts to Follow in 2015. His best selling book The Fred Factor: How Passion in Your Work and Life Can Turn the Ordinary into the Extraordinary reveals a clear path to an extraordinary life How do you define extraordinary? It is something that stands out. Ordinary is unremarkable. We don’t remember the ordinary. Sameness is a bad business and life strategy. Savor what you are able to create and do. Mark explains that we are in one of three places in our lives Stuck Struggling Successful – We run the risk of becoming stuck, just stuck at a higher level. When stuck you need a push and a plan. You need to do the work yourselves but we can encourage others and find encouragement for ourselves. Your plan should define what success looks like but we often lack clarity on the outcome we want. We assume that people without clarity haven’t taken time to define what they want. It could be the case that you just don’t know what you want. You might need to do more things, try more things and it would give you perspective. Don’t get into a state where you don’t move forward until you have perfect clarity. Sometimes people are afraid to aspire to more. Successful people are not afraid to aspire higher. It’s about aiming a little higher so you get more than you would have gotten. Live life fully! Try a lot of things and be intentional about what success looks like. Live from San Diego in front of an actual audience, host Craig Price has another speakers round-table! This year, the National Speakers Association invited Craig to do his podcast as part of their annual convention. Craig loaded this speakers round-table with past guests like Judson Laipply, Jessica Pettitt, Avish Parashar as well as welcoming hall of fame speakers Mikki Williams and Dale Irvin to the show. The big announcement of the convention was the new branding of the association now called Platform. The group discusses the pros and cons and then gets into questions about being a speaker. Where do you find mentors, how do you balance speaking with also having a partner (or not having a partner!) and much more. You can learn more about all of these great speakers at their websites: Judson - http://www.mightaswelldance.com/ (@JudsonLaipply on twitter) Jessica - http://www.jessicapettitt.com/ (@jesspettitt on twitter) Avish - http://www.avishparashar.com/ (@avishp on twitter) Mikki - http://www.mikkiwilliams.com/ (@mikkiwilliams on twitter) Dale - http://www.daleirvin.com/ (@ProSummarizer on twitter) APP BONUS: Avish, Craig, Judson and Jessica stick around to answer audience questions like how do you approach potential clients when you have a heavy topic, what was your worst gig and more! Host Craig Price celebrates the 100th episode with a speakers roundtable. A collection of past guests (and a new one) talk about being a speaker, their mistakes and why they do it. During the National Speakers Association convention this past July, Craig gathered Avish Parashar, Robert Bradford, Steve Rizzo, Jess Pettitt and new friend Patrick Maurer to talk about the ups and downs of being a speaker. What is a professional speaker? Is it just the check that makes you a professional or is there more to it? What do other speakers do that irritates you? What monumental mistakes have you made (this is where the explicit tag comes into play!)? Why do you do what you do? Get ready for a fun, enlightening discussion as Craig juggles 5 guests at the same time! Some huge thanks go to Ed Rigsbee with the Cigar PEG for the location. Finding a place for 6 people to record was a daunting task but Ed made it easy peasy. Please go to CigarPEG.com and learn about this great charity and how you can contribute. Also thanks to past guest Chip Lutz for being the bouncer at the speakers roundtable. He was the sole audient (is that a word? it is now) and kept the riff-raff out of the room while the podcast was being recorded. One of the cool things about the convention was that so many past guests were in attendance so Craig commissioned a quick group photo to commemorate the occasion.
