Creating connection has always been important, but in today's world with virtual communication it's especially relevant. Do you ever take the time to think about the impact of your words? Is making every conversation count a priority for you? I have a guest today that is an expert communicator who values the importance of creating intentional connections through meaningful conversation.    Riaz Meghji is the author of Every Conversation Counts: The 5 Habits of Human Connection that Build Extraordinary Relationships. He is an accomplished broadcaster with 17 years of television hosting experience. His on-camera experience taught him the power of candid conversation and how to put it into practice. He has hosted for MTV Canada, CTV News, TEDxVancouver, and more. He's also a human connection keynote speaker.   In today's conversation, we get to learn what Riaz is excited about now. He also shares his five proven methods for making people feel famous or heard and valued. He values the opportunity to explore and learn something new when having conversations with others. We talk about how to make someone feel appreciated and the importance of building trust.   Riaz shares the importance of documenting conversations and how that information can be a valuable tool to further the relationship when building intentional connections. This entire conversation is a valuable reminder on how to treat people and make them feel special and the rewards that are received by both parties in the conversation.    And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Riaz Meghji thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. He's going to focus on intentional connection as opposed to being on autopilot while going about his daily life.  [04:58] We talk about taking the opportunity to explore and discover something new through conversation and intentional connections.  [05:31] Riaz wants to understand the impact he has and be open to learn from others. He was fortunate enough to do this in broadcasting for 17 years. Now he's lucky enough to spread his ideas by writing about them.  [06:38] Most of us are now learning how to create a profound connection while looking into a web camera.  [07:00] Skills that have served Riaz include knowing to forget about himself. Turn the camera off and look into the lens like you are speaking to one person. He asks how he can cultivate a service mentality.  [09:28] Speak in singular in a virtual world or on stage.  [11:19] There's an opportunity to create a deeper connection in a virtual space, because every audience member has a front row seat to what you are saying. [12:26] Engage with people right out of the gate with a question.  [14:57] People want candid moments through the camera.  [17:32] Always make people feel famous. Riaz has interviewed thousands of guests over the years. Everyone wants a champion in their corner. People want to feel recognized, appreciated, and valued. [18:14] Making someone feel appreciated comes down to the power of praise. Make it specific.  [20:32] Riaz has five tips to make people feel famous. The first one is to document their details. People give you clues as to who they are. Documenting and remembering something important about a person creates respect and trust.  [25:01] Take notes and write down three things about the person that you can reference later. [27:11] Tip number two is remember their name. Riaz shares a story about the importance of remembering people's names. A tip is to focus, comment, and employ. Use their name three times in the first conversation. [31:20] Give them access. People love the behind the scenes things the best. Use social media and pull back the curtain.  [37:34] Show unsolicited appreciation. Surprise someone with appreciation when it's not expected.  [39:48] Shift your brain with the three words I get to. Start your day with three things that you are grateful for. Operate from a place of gratitude not obligation. [44:03] We have the power to teach, inspire, or destroy a person. It's a choice what we do. [44:51] Riaz absolutely rocks the Rapid Round.    Guest Contact –   Riaz Meghji Every Conversation Counts: The 5 Habits of Human Connection that Build Extraordinary Relationships Riaz Meghji Twitter Riaz Meghji Instagram Riaz Meghji YouTube #EveryConversationCounts: Riaz Meghji at TEDxSFU   Contact Jeffrey – Website Coaching support My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! Renowned speaker and author Mark Sanborn shares his leadership wisdom to inspire every employee to deliver extraordinary customer experiences, every time. Leadership is not just for leaders...or followers! Leadership has always been a tricky subject, but being a customer-centric leader today is not for the weak of heart. Just knowing what needs to be done and telling your people to do it is far from enough. In fact, leading this way leads to disengaged employees, high turnover, and ultimately, poor customer experiences. “Indifference is the number one killer of relationships.” -Mark Sanborn Great customer experiences come from a team that not only knows what to do and how, but why. They know it’s not about what happens in the customer journey, but how the customer feels about it. And they need to be empowered to take the lead on behalf of customers positive emotions highlight the experience, no matter what. This is how extraordinary customer experiences are created from ordinary roles! “You don’t manage Customer Service. You lead it.” -Mark Sanborn That’s why we’re proud to welcome renowned speaker and bestselling author Mark Sanborn to the show! Mark has written several books about leadership, and he is here to help you connect the dots between leadership and outstanding customer experiences. He outlines what makes a great leader, and how extraordinary leadership inspires employees to own their piece of the customer experience, instead of just going through the motions associated with their job titles. Here are some highlights from the interview: Can’t people just show up and do their jobs without making waves? Mark explains why these “neutral” employees lead to poor outcomes, along with some tips to help you turn that around. [4:00] How can leaders stop leaning on their titles and focus more on creating relationships that inspire true commitment to the customer experience? [7:22] Who is Fred, and how does he turn an ordinary job into an extraordinary experience for customers? More importantly, how can anyone do the same? [9:50] While intentions are good, the customer experience can still suffer. Mark outlines three things leaders and their teams must excel at to close these gaps. [16:10] Mark has another book coming soon! So what is it about? We finish up this interview with key takeaways and some information to help you get your copy. [19:00] About our guest Mark is the president of Sanborn & Associates, Inc., an idea lab for leadership development.  He has written or co-authored 8 books and is the author of more than two dozen videos and audio training programs on leadership, change, teamwork and customer service. He has presented over 2400 speeches and seminars in every state and a dozen countries. Mark holds the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) from the National Speakers Association and is a member of the Speaker Hall of Fame (CPAE). How incidents in your life can turn into a creative photography project with Pia Parolin.   This episode is sponsored by:   HoneyBook - Win Clients. Book Faster. Get Paid. Stay Organized. https://bit.ly/2sAyZIv Dr. Pia Parolin has a Ph.D. in biology but her passion for photography has started at the age of 9. After moving to Southern France in 2005 and going through difficult times, she became more serious about creative photography as her therapy. The terrorist attack in Nice in July 2016 lead to her photo project “Promenade Moments” that helped her and some of the traumatized victims to regain a positive look at the beautiful scenery of the promenade that seemed to have lost its untroubled beauty after the horrible attack. The creative photo project “Promenade Moments” has won Pia many awards, was published in magazines, and shown in exhibitions.   Pia picked Croatian photographer Olga Karlovac as the PPN inspirational photographer of the month. Olga is an emerging photographer from Zagreb and her work has been displayed in many galleries all over Europe. Pia picked Olga because of her most recent photo book project called “Before Winter” - a series of blurry and grainy B&W images that perfectly transport the “before Winter” mood that many of us experience in the Northern Hemisphere right now. You can check out Olga’s work here: https://www.olga-karlovac-photography.com/site/   In the main part of the show, Pia and Marco discuss how How incidents in your life can turn into a creative photography project. Many photographers struggle to come up with ideas for a photo project. Often they seem to be under the impression that it has to be something stunning and that you have to travel halfway around the world for it. But sometimes the great projects are very accessible and right in front of your door. Your photo project “Promenade Moments” is a great example of that. And Pia shares how the project ended up to be displayed in exhibitions, magazines, and in a book. Here are the links to Pia’s work and social media accounts: Web: https://www.piaparolin.com Promenade Moments: https://www.piaparolin.com/PortfolioFolder/Promenade-Moments/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/piaparolinphoto/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/promenademoments/ Inspirational Photo Book Pick of the Month:   “Promenade(s)” or “Promenade Moments”   Publisher shop: http://www.baiedesanges-editions.com/catalogue/promenades-rencontres-ephemerides-de-passants-pia-parolin/ Quote from Pia’s website: “PROMENADE MOMENTS” are ephemerid encounters of people passing by, instants of joy and relax for family and friends. Tourists enjoy the spectacular colours that even the rain cannot delete. Soldiers have become part of the prom’ where children play happily. People stop to look into the infinity of the blue sea. Moments and movements surround us in a place where the evil tried to take grip, but the freedom of everyday life full of ease and light prevail.” Links to Marco Larousse: Web: www.MarcoLarousse.com Twitter: @HamburgCam Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marco.larousse/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MarcoLarousse1   Links to PPN: Web: www.PhotoPodcasts.com Twitter: @Photopodcasts Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/photopodcasts/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWaUn2M1BBoecISFEOJGRCg Please support our show by using our B&H affiliate link (click here) that will not cost you a penny more than when you are buying at B&H without our link. Determining the “why” before the “how” in photography is essential to understanding your subject better and create stronger images. In each episode, they introduce you to an inspirational photographer of the month and also share an inspirational photo book of the month.

Welcome to Episode 147 of the Sheep Dressed Like Wolves Podcast. In this show I share 6 Life-Affirming lessons I've learned in my first year working as an undertaker. On New Year's eve 2014 I started the job. It has been ideal for me. As a multipotentialite it has given me meaning and variety, and it has importantly allowed me to alleviate the pressure on building my online business too fast (with the wrong stuff!) This year I've attended somewhere in the region of 350-450 funerals. I couldn't quite believe it when I worked that one out! It's been quite the learning experience in many ways. Practical, emotional, and philosophical insights. And I tell you what...I've learned more about life and its value this year than at any point in my life. For example: 1. There is Great Power in the Mundane and Every Day When we come face to face with loss it is the simple, ordinary in-between habits that we miss the most. Don't underestimate the importance of those things you take for granted. 2. Don't Live For Legacy How do you want to be remembered? What matters most to you? What impact do your decisions have on the people that matter most? 3. Life Can Turn on a Sixpence I have come face to face with some very sad situations where people have been taken unexpectedly. The overriding philosophy that people seem to respond with is 'live your life with the knowledge that you have no idea what's around the corner'. 4. The Meaning of Our Lives is Defined by the Way Others Experience Us Our own life's meaning is simple - it is found wherever we have an impact. 5. You Don't Need to Wait for a Crisis to Appreciate and Change Life They say 'you don't know what you've got till it's gone' but we all have the power to know. We just need to look around for a moment and be grateful. 6. Time is Short but We Have Loads of It When We Actually Use it Develop a Eulogy Perspective. Life is a gradual accumulation of experiences, relationships and moments over a long period of time. You can do anything you want but you can't do everything right now. Hurry Sickness: Is Our Quest to Do All and Be All Costing Us Our Health? (Psychology Today)   ...The podcast will be back again in 2016. What it Takes to Be Extraordinary in All You Do We often accomplish more by doing less. Activity is the anesthesia of the modern person. When we stay insanely busy we think we are accomplishing something but we are just staying insanely busy. Ask yourself, what’s important and am I accomplishing it! "We all have same number of hours and minutes in a day. It’s what we do with those that determine if we have an ordinary or extraordinary life." - Mark Sanborn Mark Sanborn was recently named to the Top Leadership Experts to Follow in 2015.  His best selling book The Fred Factor: How Passion in Your Work and Life Can Turn the Ordinary into the Extraordinary reveals a clear path to an extraordinary life How do you define extraordinary? It is something that stands out. Ordinary is unremarkable. We don’t remember the ordinary. Sameness is a bad business and life strategy. Savor what you are able to create and do. Mark explains that we are in one of three places in our lives Stuck Struggling Successful – We run the risk of becoming stuck, just stuck at a higher level. When stuck you need a push and a plan. You need to do the work yourselves but we can encourage others and find encouragement for ourselves. Your plan should define what success looks like but we often lack clarity on the outcome we want.  We assume that people without clarity haven’t taken time to define what they want. It could be the case that you just don’t know what you want. You might need to do more things, try more things and it would give you perspective. Don’t get into a state where you don’t move forward until you have perfect clarity. Sometimes people are afraid to aspire to more. Successful people are not afraid to aspire higher. It’s about aiming a little higher so you get more than you would have gotten. Live life fully!  Try a lot of things and be intentional about what success looks like.
