Naomi Wolf : 'A Woman's Place' (1)Even the best of revolutions can go awry when we internalize the attitudes we are fighting. The class of 1992 is graduating into a violent backlash against the advances women have made over the last 20 years. This backlash ranges from a Senator using "The Exorcist" against Anita Hill, to beer commercials with the "Swedish bikini team."Today I want to give you a backlash survival kit, a four-step manual to keep the dragons from taking up residence inside your own heads. My own commencement, at Yale, eight years ago, was the Graduation from Hell. The speaker was Dick Cavett, rumored to have been our president's"brother" in an all-male secret society.Mr. Cavett took the microphone and paled at the sight of hundreds of female about-to-be- Yale graduates."When I was a graduate," I recall he said, "There were no women. The women went to Vassar. At Vassar, they had nude photographs taken of the women in gym class to check their posture. One year the photos were stolen, and turned up for sale in New Haven's red-light district. His punch line, "The photos found no buyers."I'll never forget that moment. There we were, silent in our black gowns, our tassels, our brand new shoes. We dared not break the silence with hisses or boos, out of respect for our families, who'd come so far; and they kept still out of concern for us.Consciously or not, Mr. Cavett was using the beauty myth aspect of the backlash: when women come too close to masculine power, someone will draw critical attention to their bodies. We might be Elis, but we still wouldn't make pornography worth buying. That afternoon, several hundred men were confirmed in the power of a powerful institution. But many of the women felt the shame of the powerless: the choking on silence, the complicity, the helplessness. We were orphaned from the institution.I want to give you the commencement talk that was denied to me.Message No. 1 in your survival kit: redefine "becoming a woman."Today you have "become women."But that sounds odd in ordinary usage. What is usually meant by "You're a real woman [sic] now? "You"become a woman" when you menstruate for the first time, or when you lose your virginity, or when you have a child. These biological definitions are very different from how we say boys become men. One"becomes a man" when he undertakes responsibility, or completes a quest. But you, too, in some ways more than your male friends graduating today, have moved into maturity through a solitary quest for the adult self.

Tipp 1: Stellen Sie gute Fragen.

Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

If you ever run into Dick Cavett, don't call him an intellectual. He'll explain and reprimand me for even suggesting that. Cavett was a popular TV talk show host. He interviewed all of the big names of the time. Lucille ball, Marlon Brando, George Harrison, Richard Burton and hundreds more. He'll talk about some of his best and worst conversations. Cavett was also a writer for Jack Paar and came up with his famous line, “Here they are, Jayne Mansfield” when introducing the well-endowed actress. Dick also wrote for Merv Griffin and Johnny Carson on the “Tonight Show.” Clips from Cavett's TV show have been used in the films “Annie Hall,” “Forrest Gump” and “Apollo 13.” You may have seen him on “Saturday Night Live”, “Kate & Allie and “Cheers.”   Dick was on television in the United States for five decades.

Christmas came early for me this year as I got to talk to Dick Cavett about Groucho Marx. The occasion is the December 27 premiere of American Masters "Groucho & Cavett"  on PBS.  Dubbed "the thinking man's talk show host," Cavett emerged as a clear alternative to Johnny Carson's Tonight Show while on ABC from 1969 through 1975. (Other networks kept him busy into the '90s). His series set the bar for conversation and inquiry and featured such 20th century icons as Marlon Brando, Muhammad Ali, Woody Allen, Katharine Hepburn, Norman Mailer, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, George Harrison, Orson Welles, Judy Garland, Bette Davis, Truman Capote and too many other names to drop. One was Groucho Marx. As he tells it on this podcast, Cavett met the most famous Marx brother by "sheer accident." It happened in 1961 as they were coming out of a funeral service for famed playwright George S. Kaufman. Before you could say the secret word, the two became fast friends. Cavett was 25 at the time, Groucho 70. Later, as he was closing in on 80, the comedian appeared many times on Cavett's shows, often wearing a ridiculous golf hat with three balls on it. He killed, especially on the early episodes, singing and cracking wise and owning every inch of Cavett's stage.I was 12 or 13 at the time and saw much of it live. It was great, historic television and such fun to re-visit on the American Masters episode. The story has a Canadian angle, though not a happy one. In his last few years, the aging comedian fell under the spell of a young woman from northern Ontario named Erin Fleming. Cavett, who had them both on his show, shares his thoughts. Cavett remains witty and robust at 86. He talks about his early gigs writing jokes for Tonight Show  hosts Jack Paar and Johnny Carson. He confirms getting to know another one of the comedy gods, Stan Laurel. We even touch on one of the Yale grad's proudest achievements: getting on Richard Nixon's enemies list. Ladies and gentlemen, my guests on this episode in alphabetical order: Dick Cavett.ZWABkzvLXjZRdEItFNV3

Robert's most recent book is entitled Speaking of Harpo, co-authored with the late Susan Fleming Marx, Harpo's widow.  Susan appeared in three Broadway shows and twenty-eight films before she turned her back on a show business career she never really enjoyed or wanted. The role of her lifetime came when she married Harpo Marx in 1936. Together, they raised four adopted children and enjoyed one of Hollywood's happiest and most successful unions. But their twenty-year age difference made Susan a young widow in 1964.   Speaking of Harpo is Susan's account of her more than thirty-year adventure with Harpo including encounters with people like Charlie Chaplin, William Randolph Hearst, Salvador Dalí, Joan Crawford, Howard Hughes, Helen Keller, Bugsy Siegel, Sam Goldwyn, Ginger Rogers, and of course, the Marx Brothers. The book provides an inside look at the family and pulls no punches when discussing her brothers-in-law, who weren't always her favorite comedians.   The book was released in July 2022 and would make an excellent gift for that Marx Brother's fan or golden age film buff on your list. Terry Brock's bio Today, more than ever, you need to know what is happening with technology and business and how to benefit from the changes.   Today's guest is ideally suited to help you understand what is happening and take advantage of the opportunities. Terry Brock is a Communications and Marketing Advisor who works with clients around the world (44 countries and counting!) showing them how to present in a video to get the results they want.  He's a member of the Speaker Hall of Fame, has earned the Certified Speaking Professional designation, and has received the highest award given by the National Speakers Association (1 person per year), the Cavett. He recently was asked by Ace Hardware to be their Chief Retail Advisor training their retailers around the world in video. He was asked by Skype to be their Chief Enterprise Blogger and worked with them to serve their 43 million monthly customers. His clients include sole proprietors to Fortune 10 companies.  Building relationships For Terry, the meetings industry is all about communicating, building relationships, and connecting with people. He enjoys speaking to many different kinds of organizations, from Fortune 10 companies to solo practitioners, and showing people how to leverage technology to build relationships. He is always open to learning something more and something new. Terry's career journey Terry has been a professional speaker since 1983. He started speaking in the third grade when he stood up in front of his church to read the Christmas story. After college, he worked in radio and newspaper, and then went on to get an MBA in Marketing. After completing the MBA program, Terry taught himself to use a computer. He started using spreadsheets to help people invest in real estate. After that, he started doing spreadsheet training.  Then, Terry found a company in Atlanta looking for someone to do training on the very same spreadsheets with which he had been working, so he started working for them.  Training CPAs Terry met someone from the Georgia Society of CPAs and started training CPAs to use spreadsheets. From there, things started growing. The National Speakers Association After speaking for five years, Terry landed up speaking to CPAs in New York City. One of the speakers told him about the National Speakers Association. He decided to join the organization and also got involved with the local chapter.  Getting involved  Getting involved in the National Speakers Association made a big difference for Terry and opened many doors. It gave him training and motivation and taught him all he needed to build relationships, help others solve their problems, and become a great speaker. He initially became the Co-chair of a speaker's school that the NPA was offering, then VP of Finance for the Atlanta chapter, and eventually President of the Atlanta chapter.  Technology Technology has always been a vital part of what Terry has been doing. He loved being around people, so he also started talking about relationship marketing and blending technology into that. Blockchain and cryptocurrency Lately, Terry has become excited about speaking about Bitcoin, blockchain, and cryptocurrencies at conferences because they open up possibilities for people everywhere. Video Terry considers video to be one of the most powerful business tools today. He believes that video has some distinct advantages. If you do not know how to communicate effectively using video, you will hamper your career. The future Terry thinks that in the future, we will be using both video and in person. Having good audio  You need to have excellent audio when using video. If people cannot hear you or you cannot hear them, they will go somewhere else. Make sure that you have an external microphone positioned so that you are looking into the webcam. The background Be aware of what you have in the background and what is going on behind you when you do video.  Video messaging If done right, video can be a valuable tool for connecting because it can humanize the virtual experience. Send a video of yourself rather than a letter or text to connect or give someone a message. You communicate your emotions better that way because people can see your facial expressions and how you react. A shift Business owners will need to make a shift in the future when managing their teams and client relations. Many people prefer working remotely. They focus better and can get more done in that way.  Managers Managers need to understand that we are going into a new world. They should learn to adapt, be flexible, focus on results, and assign tasks based on objectives rather than on the number of hours that get put in.  Using technology in the right way Technology should be used appropriately and to its best advantage, focusing on getting the best results. Technology problems Many problems caused by technology can get solved by using time-honored non-technological principles like filtering emails and using time-blocking. Successful people Terry knows many successful people who got ahead by being kind, gracious, giving individuals, and treating people with decency, honor, and respect.  Connect with Eric On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website Connect with Terry Brock On his Website

In Western culture, self-actualization and “success” have become such important idols that many will pay any price to get them. We believe that if we have enough education or experience and work hard enough, it doesn't matter who we step over (or on!) to climb the ladder. But the reality is that skill and knowledge can only get you so far: Fifteen percent of the reason [people] get a job, keep that job and move ahead in that job, is determined by [their] technical skill and knowledge – regardless of their profession…. What about the other 85 percent? Cavett quotes Stanford Research Institute, Harvard University and the Carnegie Foundation as having proved that 85 percent of the reason people get a job, keep that job, and move ahead in that job has to do with [their] people skills and people knowledge. What this quote shows is that, Christian or not, we must learn to value the people that God has brought into our lives, especially in the workplace. Not surprising, what these institutions discovered is actually a biblical principle. The Scriptures teach us that no matter who we work for or with whom we work, we should treat them, and the situation, as though we were serving Jesus himself (Colossians 3:23). We do not get to push people aside, but rather we honor them, as though we were serving Jesus. In so doing, we combat the fear and competition that so easily sets in, as we strive to keep up in the workplace. Instead of seeking our own way forward, we learn to seek one another's best, and in so doing honor our Lord, Jesus.Relationship: Messy and Marvelous | Coworkers & Teammates | Leviticus 19:13, Colossians 3:23

In this amazing episode, Tony and Gary spend time with the one-and-only DICK CAVETT, perhaps the most erudite and clever TV talk show host ever. In a wide-ranging and very funny conversation, Cavett talks about interviewing the greats on his late-night ABC show, like Groucho Marx and Katharine Hepburn; he gives insight into show guests like David Bowie, John Lennon, and William F. Buckley, Jr.; and he talks at length about his good friend and late-night competitor, Johnny Carson. And, opinionated and sharp as ever, Cavett weighs in on Donald Trump and the current political scene!   Also: Tony and Gary grab a bagel, and Gary gets some new employment opportunities.   This episode is truly one of a kind.
