This is now the 38th time President Trump has proclaimed a “great deal” with Iran. Is this one finally real? And if so, does it vindicate his strategy of escalating tensions to force Tehran back to the negotiating table?Based on the details leaked so far, the proposed agreement amounts to a 60-day ceasefire designed to create space for further negotiations. Yet the benefits for Iran appear to come first: sanctions relief and access to frozen assets before any final agreement on uranium enrichment or the nuclear program is reached. If that proves accurate, it is difficult to see where the Trump administration can claim victory. The deal risks looking less like a breakthrough and more like an agreement to reward Iran in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.Has Trump abandoned his own red lines? And if the end result resembles the framework negotiated under Obama, what exactly has changed? Finally, where does Israel fit into this agreement—and what could derail it before the ink is even dry?Become a Munk Donor ($50 annually) to get 72-hour advanced access to the full length editions of Friday Focus and Munk Dialogues. In this blistering commentary segment, the host unloads on Donald Trump's involvement in South Carolina state politics, arguing his early endorsements have cleared the field for establishment liberals while cutting down true conservative fighters. Turning to foreign policy, the host reacts to Trump's recent social media warnings to Iran, blasting the administration for letting Tehran cross 38 separate red lines while putting U.S. troops in direct danger. Finally, the host highlights critical legislative standoffs, celebrating a $70 billion federal funding victory for ICE and Border Patrol. The host warns that federal election protection like the SAVE Act is urgently needed to stop radical, progressive election strategies from turning solid-red states purple!
Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Editor David Horovitz joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Israel and Lebanon agreed on Wednesday to renew their fragile ceasefire and create a number of “pilot” security zones inside Lebanon from which Hezbollah terrorists would be banned. This comes as the US House, for the first time, approved a war powers resolution that would halt the US military action against Iran, even as the US is still negotiating a permanent ceasefire with the Islamic Regime. Horovitz unwinds the storm of headlines from the US and speaks about the relationship between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Dozens of ultra-Orthodox extremists smashed windows and caused property damage while trying to break into Supreme Court Deputy Chief Justice Noam Sohlberg’s house during a riot Wednesday night, in the latest such violent demonstration targeting law enforcement over the arrest of Haredi draft dodgers. Sohlberg’s wife, Meira, said to reporters outside her vandalized home. “Look at this devastation; it’s a pogrom. What is this, Kristallnacht?” Horovitz weighs in on what led up to this smashing of a societal red line. Lawmakers voted 61-57 in the Knesset on Wednesday to elect Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s personal lawyer, Michael Rabello, as state comptroller in a controversial do-over vote marred by accusations that illegal pressure tainted the election. Can Rabello freely criticize the government of his former client? We get Horovitz's take. And finally, Horovitz narrates a troubling conversation he held this week -- with AI. Gordon Chang discusses China's "red lines" as tools for diplomatic intimidation. He argues China is fundamentally weak due to demographic collapse, a failing economy, and a military that lacks operational leadership for major invasions. (5/16)1940 CALDWELL ID
Tensions escalate inside the political and media ecosystem as hardline commentary, battlefield rhetoric, and diplomatic negotiations collide over policy toward Iran. The conversation centers on conflicting approaches inside the Trump orbit—ranging from deal-making diplomacy to calls for maximum military force—while critics warn of escalation risks and strategic miscalculation. ⚡ Cold Open (Hook) “Some are calling for negotiations… others are openly demanding total war.” A heated breakdown of competing visions inside U.S. foreign policy circles raises the question: is diplomacy with Iran still viable—or is the situation already past the point of negotiation?
PREVIEW for Later Today: Gordon Chang advises against being intimidated by China's aggressive rhetoric toward Taiwan. He argues that China lacks fixed principles, often shifting its diplomatic "red lines" based on their assessment of relative global strength.1906 PEKING STREET IN SHANGHAI

In this special series, Max shares why we're hosting and preserving the Unbounded archive at Ungovernable Misfits. In the third re-release of the series, Seth For Privacy — educator, builder and VP at Cake Wallet joins TBD. Seth brings a candid, practical nuance to the state of Bitcoin and Monero, the realities of social media and education, and what “good enough privacy” means for everyday people versus targeted dissidents. Seth and TBD dig into saving in Bitcoin, spending in Monero, the impact of the Samourai Wallet case, why PayJoin V2 and silent payments matter, and how adoption—not tribalism—will determine the future of digital sovereignty. Seth shares a pragmatic optimism: we're winning in usability and tooling, but only if we keep building, learning and refusing false binaries. We explore the current crossroads for Bitcoin privacy, the legal chill from Tornado Cash/Samourai prosecutions, Nostr versus X for reach, and Monero's resilience amid delistings. If the Trump administration adopts Israel's “red lines” in the negotiations with Iran, the talks are doomed, argues Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. Parsi tells host Steve Clemons that Iran is willing to reach a deal on its nuclear programme, as it did in 2015 with then-President Barack Obama. But a lot depends on “whether the US is willing to push back against Israel or not”. Israeli officials were “very upset” that the United States has so far chosen diplomacy over war, and demand that the US add new issues – especially Iran's ballistic missiles – to the agenda. AI isn't just evolving faster than we can regulate. It's crossing lines many assumed were universally off-limits.This week on Future-Focused, I'm unpacking three very different stories that highlight an uncomfortable truth: we seem to have completely abandoned the idea that there are lines technology should never cross. From OpenAI's move to allow ChatGPT to generate erotic content, to the U.S. military's growing use of AI in leadership and tactical decisions, to AI-generated videos resurrecting deceased public figures like MLK Jr. and Fred Rogers, each example exposes the deeper leadership crisis.Because, behind every one of these headlines is the same question: who's drawing the red lines, and are there any?In this episode, I explore three key insights every leader needs to understand:Not having clear boundaries doesn't make you adaptable; it makes you unanchored. Why red lines are rarely as simple as “never" and how to navigate the complexity without erasing conviction. And why waiting for AI companies to self-regulate is a guaranteed path to regret.I'll also share three practical steps to help you and your organization start defining what's off-limits, who gets a say, and how to keep conviction from fading under convenience. If you care about leading with clarity, conviction, and human responsibility in an AI-driven world, this one's worth the listen.Oh, and if this conversation challenged your thinking or gave you something valuable, like, share, and subscribe. What if the most powerful technology in human history is being built by people who openly admit they don't trust each other? In this explosive 2-hour debate, three AI experts pull back the curtain on the shocking psychology driving the race to Artificial General Intelligence—and why the people building it might be the biggest threat of all. Kokotajlo predicts AGI by 2028 based on compute scaling trends. Marcus argues we haven't solved basic cognitive problems from his 2001 research. The stakes? If Kokotajlo is right and Marcus is wrong about safety progress, humanity may have already lost control.Sponsor messages:========Google Gemini: Google Gemini features Veo3, a state-of-the-art AI video generation model in the Gemini app. Sign up at https://gemini.google.comTufa AI Labs are hiring for ML Engineers and a Chief Scientist in Zurich/SF. Across two explosive segments, Tara dissects the rapidly unfolding geopolitical crisis involving the U.S., Iran, Israel, and China. From President Trump's chilling directive to evacuate Tehran and his refusal to negotiate, to the growing threat of Iranian-backed attacks on U.S. assets and political figures, the message is clear: war is no longer hypothetical—it's underway. Tara contrasts past military missteps in Iraq and Afghanistan with today's high-tech, high-stakes environment, warning that the Democrat Party's alleged alignment with foreign adversaries like Iran and China is endangering national security. With U.S. munitions dwindling and partisan alliances shifting, she urges immediate action before it's too late.
Today, Morgan, Martha, Les, and Jess discuss Israel's launch of Operation Rising Lion—a sweeping strike against Iran's nuclear infrastructure, long-range missile sites, air defenses, and senior IRGC leadership. As the U.S. pulled personnel from the region, raising questions about prior coordination, President Trump claimed he had warned Iran of the consequences of refusing a deal. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the U.S. was not involved, calling the Israeli strikes a unilateral action. With the situation still unfolding, is the region now on the brink of a broader war? What does this strike mean for U.S. influence in the Middle East—and for the safety of American personnel on the ground? And has diplomacy with Iran reached a final breaking point, or is there still time to pull back from escalation?Check out the answers to these questions and more in this episode of Fault Lines.Check out the sources that helped shape our Fellows' discussion: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/us-embassy-iraq-preparing-ordered-evacuation-due-heightened-security-risks-2025-06-11/ https://time.com/7293392/us-embassy-iraq-iran/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/06/11/us-israel-iran-attack-fears/ https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c629yk5z07vo Follow our experts on Twitter: @morganlroach @marthamillerdc@lestermunson @NotTVJessJonesLike what we're doing here? Today, we continue our discussion of how to pin down Republicans and conservative media to commit to specific goals. They are all in agreement about abstract ideas, but then when it comes to the specific issues and leverage points that will determine the outcome, they fall apart. I list a number of fault lines that reveal who is real and discuss the need to lay down those markers before the trifecta GOP control begins. I do this by reading through the transcript of Trump's Time magazine article to identify some concerning messaging points. Things like actual spending cuts of entire programs, legal immigration, and some social issues are concerning, and we need to get ahead of them. As always, rather than just criticizing the status quo, I offer up what I would pitch to Trump in the Oval Office. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
