Stan Bowles, arguably the greatest player ever to wear the blue and white hoops of Queens Park Rangers, died just over a month ago on 24 February 2024. It's no secret that QPR, and Bowles, have a special place in the FOTM universe – hence not just Alex's A Season on the Med but one of our special, not-really-on-the-Med editions in the form of QPR v West Brom. Alex was there for a match that as poignant as it was action-packed, but this week's episode sees him in more reflective mode. Listen for musings on the Meaning of Stan, and whether 58 is ‘old', as John puts the questions amid the tranquil 80 (or is it 400?) boats in the Port du Garavan, Menton. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/footy-on-the-med/message

This week Dun and Andy welcome QPR NYC OG Paul Curtis to talk about a pair of heart pounding results for the Rangers, a 2-1 win over Leicester and a 2-2 draw with West Brom as well as pregame tributes to Stan Bowles and Paul's appearance on the Tik Tok.
The great Stan Bowles passed away on 24 February 2024, making QPR v West Brom a must for Alex. This was the first home game for the Rs since the death of the club's talismanic, legendary number 10, and Loftus Road was duly packed to the rafters. QPR went into the game on the back of a run of good form but, relegation-threatened as they are, in need of a win, while victory would help the Baggies in their promotion challenge. It was all to play for in W12 as Alex and guests (including pod guest Ricardo, Film London Josh, C-Block Simon and Jack from The Upshot) watched a belter. QPR 2 West Brom 2 – a special edition of FOTM in tribute to Stan the Man – was recorded at Loftus Road on 7 March 2024. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/footy-on-the-med/message

Footy on the Med's final game of the 2021-2022 season was on the Med, but not as John and Alex have come to know it. Alex's obsession with QPR and Stan Bowles saw him travel solo to Greece for AEK Athens v Olympiacos, by way of a reprise of the Rs' great UEFA Cup run of 1977. "I'm sorry, what UEFA Cup run? Anyway I can't make it, I have to watch some paint dry," said John, but he missed a treat. Playing their last game in the Olympic Stadium before next season's return to their spiritual home (the new Nikos Gomas stadium), AEK confounded a poor season and their furious fans with a decent display against Olympiacos, this year's Greek Super League champions. Thanks to the wonderful Paola Menachem, it wasn't all Greek to Alex. Recorded at the (rather tired) Olympic Stadium in Athens, with varying sound quality, Tuesday May 17th 2022. It ended AEK Athens 2, Olympiacos 3. More info at FootyOnTheMed.com
It's taken all season but, at last, John finds his vocation on a trip to Cagnes-sur-Mer. There, on a sunny Mediterranean day while watching AS Cagnes-Le-Cros take on FC Carnoux, all becomes clear. John 'Entertainer' O'Hare has always existed, but now exists formally. Informally, too. To be fair, despite Carnoux winning 4-2, this wasn't the most exhilarating game Footy on the Med has seen. John's entertainment skills were much needed, as Alex burbled on about QPR, Stan Bowles and how Heineken can refresh the anecdotes other beers cannot reach. A book, too, and how his forthcoming A Season on the Med will feature... an Entertainer. Who raps. Cagnes-Le-Cros 2, FC Carnoux 4 was recorded at the Stade Pierre Sauvaigo on Sunday 15 May 2022. In this episode I speak to Angelica, a University Professor who teaches Film Analysis and Journalism in Mexico. Angelica read in an interview Robert Smith of The Cure, talking about being a QPR supporter. Not knowing anything about the club at the time, she asked her father about it. "That's Alan McDonald's team," he said. With that she started to research the club and its history and began to follow them. Never thinking that she could ever watch them. She discovered the QPR Podcast - Open all R's, which was the first time she felt very much a part of the QPR Family. Not able to watch the games, but following the club via the podcast. She immersed herself in the history of the club and developed a deep passion for the club. Visiting London in 2017 to watch them play. Initially disappointed when the team went down to the Championship, Angelica is now happy with how competitive the league is. Her earliest memory of football is being placed in front of the TV by her mum to watch the 1986 World Cup and told me how crazy she has been about football ever since. Alan Mcdonald and Stan Bowles are her club legends. She talked to me about players Jamie Mackie, who missed out on being called a legend and how Josh Scowen, deserved a bit more praise for his time at the club. We also talked about the young players at the club, Ilias chair and Eberechi Eze. The QPR ground was always known as Loftus Road. In 2019 it was renamed The Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loftus_Road) . A foundation started to honor former QPR youth player Kiyan Prince, who lost his life while intervening to prevent the bullying of another boy. We discussed the renaming, the role the club has played in the community, and their support to the victims of Grenfell Tower fire. She got to experience first hand how QPR appreciate their fans, when she was invited to spend the day at the training ground. She told me all about that day and the cherished friendships she has with the QPR family. We discuss her collection of over 50 scarves, a funny story with James Walsh of Starsailor and her connection to Northern Ireland and her dream of wanting to live there one day. Angelica shares the heartwarming story of her journey as a QPR fan, having been able to find a community to belong to, being able to share her interests with a far away family and developing the most rewarding friendship. First up is Gary Roberts and Francis Joseph - a footballing double act if ever there is one. Theres two guys were hilarious. Forming a lethal striking partnership back in the 80s playing in the team with the killer midfield of Stan Bowles, Terry Hurlock and Chris Kamara, you could see that the Roberts/Joseph bond was still there 30 years later. They had the audience in stitches - cracking joke after joke. Gary Roberts claimed that he had invented the Cruyff turn - years before the master of the Cruyff turn Johan Cryff had actually coined the phrase. Francis Joseph told the audience how he was ‘tapped up' (allegedly) by Brentford in the bar after a match at Griffin Park after just destroying The Bees - scoring two goals in Wimbledon's comeback which saw them win 3-2 after being 2-0 down at half time. They talk about Stan Bowles' dodgy entourage - some sort of West London mafia. Three months later he was playing football down at Griffin Park With the summer fast approaching, 90 Brentford fans joined the Dave Lane and Billy Grant from Beesotted and a bunch of Brentford legends - Gary Roberts, Francis Joseph, Billy Manuel & Graham Benstead - at the fabulous Drayton Court Hotel in Ealing to see the season off in style at their end of season Pride of West London Bees-Up. Following on from the Christmas Bees-Up at Fullers Brewery with Carl Hutchings, Richard Cadette and Paul Gibbs and the first Bees-Up at The Globe with Terry Evans, Marcus Gayle and Ijah Anderson, this do was set to be a proper laugh. And it didn't fail to deliver. It was an evening packed with entertainment that went on until the early hours- a magician (a Fulham-supporting magician at that), Tim Clarke the Brentford-supporting comedian, DJ Pricey on the ones and twos as well as two Brentford legends sessions. Even ex Bee Chris Kamara made an appearance to tell a tale bout his ex team-mates. There was also an auction - raising over £1k for two charities (we're still collecting the money as we speak) - Brentford Community Trust and CALM - the campaign against living miserably fighting male depression with prized very kindly donated by Brentford Football Club, The Globe and Fullers'. CiTR radio is in the middle of their annual Fundrive (their fundraising telethon to help keep the station producing the great shows it does). This is our first year of taking part in it, so we wanted to do something a little special and something a little bit different from our normal shows. Our Wavelength feature on football songs has proved to be popular, so we're bringing you another whole show of them! Our first Wavelength special was back in September 2015, Episode 129. That was on songs about and by football clubs. For the second special, the theme is songs about footballers, with all but one of the tracks also named after the player himself. We've got songs for you on Peter Beardsley around his time as a Vancouver Whitecaps players; Manchester United and Welsh legend Ryan Giggs; current Scotland manager Gordon Strachan; Another Scottish legend, Kenny Dalglish; former Trinidad and Tobago striker Jason Scotland; a couple of punk songs about Diego Maradona and Bobby Moore; how QPR cult hero Stan Bowles brought two friends closer together; and an interesting track about Man City's former Georgian playmaker, Georgi Kinkladze, and rounding it off, a bizarre lounge session from Tony Adams and the Arsenal team, well kind of. Have a listen and don't forget to let us know your own favourites for future shows.
