Despite being on the back foot for the majority of the match, Jarrad Branthwaite's brilliant finish had Toffees worldwide hoping for our first win of 2024. Optimistic feelings were bolstered after Billy Gilmour was shown a straight red for a shocking challenge on Amadou Onana. Instead, it's now 4 draws in 5 matches for Everton, after Lewis Dunk's stoppage-time header brought the hosting Brighton level today at the AmEx Stadium. James and Ryan break down the match per usual, examining the relative weakness of Brighton's lineup, EFC's ongoing ineptitude from open play, atrocious refereeing (AGAIN), and the merits of "packing it in" to preserve a lead. As always, some insightful listener comments help drive the dialogue as the Blues finish the day 1 point outside the drop zone, still waiting for news on the points deduction appeal. Forest suffered a rare home defeat, but in reality Brighton were the better team. Had it not been for a penalty and an, ahem, interesting red card for visiting skipper Lewis Dunk, the Reds would probably have been dead and buried. As it is, they will rue missed chances, with both Morgan Gibbs-White and Ryan Yates wishing they had done better. Steven and Baz discuss the game, the team selection and the refereeing performance which dominated the post-match discussion; it's fair to say that both sides were pretty unhappy with the performance of Anthony Taylor. Joe Cole is often described as one of the most gifted players of his generation, and in recent years the former West Ham, Chelsea and Liverpool player has earned a reputation as a pundit worth listening to. What a joy it was to record this Thursday Club after a fantastic Tuesday night victory, under the lights, against an in-form and (until last night) undefeated Brighton & Hove Albion side. It was a fascinating tactical contest, which burst into life after our Serbian King, Alexander ‘can he do it in the Prem?' Mitrovic slid onto the end of a Neeskens Kebano cross-come-shot to put us 1 up early in the second half. The Whites doubled their lead thanks to an own goal from Brighton's centre back Lewis Dunk, who's tidy finish wrong-footed Robert Sanchez. Just moments later, A VAR penalty decision went against BDR, and Alexis Mac Allister slotted home to give us, and the neutral at home, a scintillating final 30. We call it game management, Brighton fans may call it time wasting - but whatever your persuasion, Fulham defended superbly to earn the 3 points. Currently 6th in the table. 5 in 5 for Mitro. What a time to be alive! Fulham are a joy to watch, at the highest standard of domestic club football. What a pod we have in store for you today. We'll analyse yesterday game, then in part 2 we'll answer your questions and look ahead to transfer deadline day… before wrapping up with a preview of Saturday's game against Spurs. Our friends in the north, Alastair and Nick, provide their views from Old Trafford as Albion were robbed of the best chance of a deserved result due to VAR's re-writing of reality to ManUre's benefit, pressuring ref Peter Bankes into sending off Lewis Dunk. So it's a case of same sh*t, different day for the good guys! Russ then popped on to have a mega rant! Stand or fall! UTA! Down with conscious bias! Down with unconscious bias! And down with backboneless or misled referees, whichever applies here! @BrightonRockPod brightonrockpodcast@gmail.com Part of the Sport Social Podcast Network that can be found in all their glory at this rather suitable address: www.sport-social.co.uk Please follow us for automatic downloads of new episodes and if you want to make us really happy please rate us five stars on Apple and any other platforms that provide the opportunity to do so! It's Brighton / P*lace time! It's not a derby, it's a rivalry!!! Quit your branding efforts, Media! In this precursive chat ahead of the big kick off, we invited the opposition on again to get a feel for the mood in the run up to Friday. On this occasion Russ was delighted to welcome on Amy Latter, a life long P*lace fan (boo, hiss), former Selhurst Park cheerleader (hooray!) and now mother to a little lady who at 3.5 months old becomes our youngest ‘guest', in her cameo role!!Under discussion: life as a P*lace fan, the crunch games v Albion including ‘that' game, the easy home wins for both sides, Russ's mate missing all three goals in the St Patrick's Day Massacre match, the pantomime villainy roll call starring Wilf Zaha, Neal Maupay, Lewis Dunk and soon likely to star Michael Olise. We also whinge at the derby branding attempts by outsiders, give our score predictions and welcome Amy's tiny tot Zara to the show! It got rowdy at the end!!! ;)Let battle commence!Stand or fall! UTA! How did a quick free-kick turn into a week-long saga? Lee Mason is probably asking himself exactly that after a weird mix-up at the AMEX saw Lewis Dunk's 'goal' for Brighton disallowed after two peeps of a whistle and a VAR review. You had to be there. In North London, Gareth Bale and Willian have started to show signs of life. The Welshman has developed a penchant for goals against weak sides and the Brazilian has become the master of the nearly-but-not-quite assist. You make your own luck in sport, unless you're the Welsh rugby team, who on Saturday had a lot of ref and TMO decisions go their way. So is it just that everything always comes up Wales, or are they a doughty, tough, mentally resilient and increasingly skillful side that deserves the Triple Crown and the now inevitable Grand Slam? We talk to Gerry Thornley and Shane Horgan about the series of Covid breaches in French rugby, if Fabien Galthie will get the sack, and what the French Government, the French rugby union and 6N should do about this. We ask if Ireland can continue to offload against the good teams, if Andy Farrell, with Kelleher, Furlong, Kilcoyne, Henderson, Ryan, Beirne, Connors and Stander, has found his best set of forwards for the Scotland and England games. Plus there's Rees Zammit's poker face and rugby analysis via Kevin Costner and Lewis Dunk.
Did Lee Mason's double whistle blow mistake that led to Lewis Dunk's free kick being disallowed, cost Brighton the game v West Brom? In this episode Straight Shootin' LJA discusses the controversy around Lee Mason blowing his whistle twice in quick succession, which led to mass confusion and a Lewis Dunk free kick goal being disallowed SSLJA discusses how bad Mason's mistake was and if the standard of refereeing has caused that sort of mistake. SSLJA also discusses Mason being taken off the Sheffield United v Liverpool match a day later as fourth official due to injury, and if this was Mason being protected from further scrutiny after his high profile mistake 24 hours earlier. Mark Chapman is joined by Micah Richards, Chris Sutton & Rory Smith for the Monday Night Club as we look back on perhaps the biggest refereeing controversy of them all since the introduction of VAR in the Premier League. We debate what should happen next to ensure better decisions are made - is it time for referees to be hooked up to microphones like other sports? Or should officials have to explain their decisions to the media? As Manchester United failed to score against a so-called "big-6" rival once again this season, is Bruno Fernandes in contention for player of the year accolades? Or does he need to have a greater impact in the bigger games? And after a starring role in which he scored twice in their four-nil win over Burnley, have Tottenham finally unlocked the Gareth Bale of old? TOPICS: 03:12: What on earth happened at the Hawthorns? Debate on Lee Mason's decision to disallow Lewis Dunk's goal against West Brom. 08:00: VAR in football, its impact, implementation and is it damaging football? 17:00: Should referees be recorded via microphone during games or have to explain their decisions? 25:30: Manchester United fail to score against a fellow "big-6" rival once again. 28:00: Debate on Bruno Fernandes in big games and his credentials for the Player of the Year awards. 38:37: Has the real Gareth Bale finally stood up for Spurs?

Son Heung-min reached a century of Tottenham goals as his team ended a four-game winless run in the Premier League, and Arsenal surged to a third successive victory that allays relegation jitters in a bright start to 2021 for the north London rivals on Saturday.Alexandre Lacazette scored twice in a 4-0 rout of West Bromwich Albion that took Arsenal up to 11th place.Tottenham is six points better off in third place after Son scored and got an assist in a 3-0 victory over Leeds.Sheffield United remains winless 17 games into the season after losing 2-0 at Crystal Palace. The most goals of the day came on the south coast with Brighton fighting back from a two-goal deficit to snatch a 3-3 draw with Wolverhampton.SON-KANE COMBOSon and Harry Kane equalled the Premier League record for most goal combinations in a season, levelling Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton's tally of 13 from 1994-95.This was achieved with another 22 games to go. After Kane had opened the scoring from the penalty spot, he teed up Son for his landmark goal. With all stadiums denied fans due to pandemic restrictions, the South Korean could only celebrate his 100th goal with teammates.Son returned the plaudits by setting up the third. Toby Alderweireld benefited from Illan Meslier's error as the Leeds goalkeeper allowed a header from Son's corner to squirm in for the third in the second half.It was the first time Spurs scored three times in a league game since they drew 3-3 with West Ham in October as the shackles finally came off after a month of sitting on leads."We could have scored more goals," Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho said. "We had good opportunities to score, and not just from the traditional Sonny and Kane."ARSENAL RAMPANTAfter snow was cleared from the Hawthorns pitch, Arsenal swept aside a hapless West Brom.Kieran Tierney curled in the opener from 15 yards (meters) after beating Darnell Furlong before cutting in.Bukayo Saka was part of a flowing move with Emile Smith Rowe and Lacazette before tapping in the second before halftime.Lacazette made it 3-0 after 61 minutes when Saka's cross caused chaos. His delivery was turned onto his own post by Semi Ajayi, Smith Rowe's follow-up was blocked and Lacazette fired in the rebound from 10 yards. Lacazette was on target again when he turned in Tierney's cross from close range.West Brom has now conceded nine goals in its last two games, to leave Sam Allardyce's new side next-to-last in the league.WONDER GOALA five-game winless run ended for Palace thanks to a meeting with the league's worst team and a wonder goal from Ebere Eze after Jeffrey Schlupp's deflected opener.Eze collected James McArthur's pass deep inside his own half and skipped past Oliver Norwood before he did the same to Ethan Ampadu and then produced a measured curled finish into the bottom corner beyond Aaron Ramsdale from 20 yards.Palace manager Roy Hodgson played Luka Milivojevic despite his captain breaching government guidelines at a New Year Eve's party.BRIGHTON RECOVERYAfter Aaron Connolly's early opener, Brighton capitulated against Wolves — conceding from Romain Saiss' header, an own-goal from Dan Burn and a penalty from Ruben Neves after Burn brought down Adama Traore. But Neal Maupay won and converted a penalty before Lewis Dunk headed in the equalizer to secure a draw that took Brighton three points clear of the relegation zone, albeit having played two games more than 18th-place Fulham.Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo was frustrated to throw away two points having been in such a commanding position.
Manchester United got its first Premier League points of the season thanks to a 100th-minute penalty from Bruno Fernandes to finally win 3-2 in an enthralling game against Brighton and Hove Albion.Brighton opened the scoring, a coolly finished Neal Maupay penalty giving the hosts the lead before Lewis Dunk put the ball into his own net to level the scores just before half-time.Marcus Rashford's solo goal put United on top, and Brighton thought it had snatched a dramatic late draw thanks to Solly March's header before Fernandes' penalty, 10 minutes after the 90-minute mark. While it eventually secured the win, Manchester United lived on the edge, with Brighton hitting the woodwork five times during the game and had one awarded penalty overruled by video assistant referee (VAR) and another potential one waved away by the referee."We left so much space for them to play, we were not as aggressive, we gave away two goals" Fernandes told BT Sport after the game. "We have to do much better."Brighton did very well but maybe because we are not aggressive as we want. We need to recover more balls, press better, lose less possession. Maybe they deserved more. The point is score goals not hit the bar. Sometimes you have to have some luck."An up and down affairAfter being surprised by Crystal Palace last week, Manchester United was hoping to make a more positive start on the south of England against Brighton. But it was the home side who made the brighter sight, as with Leandro Trossard smashing the ball against David de Gea's left post -- the Belgian midfielder would go onto hit the woodwork twice more.In the opening two games of the season, the woodwork has stopped as many shots for Manchester United's opponents this season as goalkeeper de Gea."Unbelievable, the feeling I can't describe, we were the better team today," Trossard said. "We deserved at least a point, it's a shame. Sometimes it's just not your day."And Brighton eventually made the pressure count -- only after Mason Greenwood had a goal ruled out for offside -- as Maupay chipped the penalty, which was awarded for Fernandes' foul on the exciting Tariq Lamptey, past the despairing de Gea.It took United just three minutes to equalize though, with Dunk only able to deflect home a cross from Nemanja Matic. After half-time, Rashford's mazy run and finish gave the Manchester side the lead. However in the 95th minute, Brighton thought it has won a point right at the death, as March headed in a cross from Alireza Jahanbakhsh. But an even later penalty, spotted and awarded via VAR after the on-field official Chris Kavanagh had blown to signal the end of the match, was smashed into the top corner by Fernandes.Fernandes' goal at 99:45 minutes is the latest scored in the Premier League since Juan Mata's strike for Chelsea against Norwich in August 2011, scored in 100:03 minutes. The result would be even more painful for Brighton as it had a penalty of its own overturned by VAR in the second half, after Aaron Connolly was adjudged to have been fouled by Paul Pogba, only for referee Chris Kavanagh to change his mind."We got away with one. Maybe one point we deserved, we didn't deserve more. But the character deserved more" Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told BT Sport."Last season we had too many draws, so that is a big plus for us. You have to be happy Jose is not here to measure the goal posts."They are a difficult team to play against. We don't have the legs and sharpness, but we will get there. We have plenty of work ahead."text by Ben Morse, CNN

Phew! Manchester City have finally won the Premier League title. What took them so damned long, eh? Luckily, the Football Fives Podcast gang is on hand to run the rule over their extraordinary tardiness. It's gone Easter, for Christ's sake. Embarrassing. We're a three-piece this week. Chris Nee had to go and cause some trouble at a derby match so it's left to David Hartrick, Daniel Storey and Ryan Keaney to talk City's triumph, mull over the bizarre phenomenon of the PFA awards, discuss football documentaries and name the best footballing time of the year. (It's Christmas.)There's also a dip back into our hands-off running of the fictional club we made up once as we talk about our marquee summer signings. Will we snatch Mohamed Salah? Snare Cristiano Ronaldo? Rescue Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini from their parted hell, reuniting them in our fantastical version of Berlin? There's only one way to find out...Submit a question:show[at]footballfivespodcast.comListen to the show:Click to play / right-click to download (MP3)Import to podcatcher of choice (feed)Subscribe in iTunes // Subscribe in Stitcher
