Rory is joined by Nikos and Thanos for the next installment of our club histories sub-series - a conversation on AEK Athens. Founded by Greek migrants from Constantinople following the Greco-Turkish War, AEK Athens grew to become one of the most successful clubs in Greece. Their primary fan group, Original 21, are known for their anti-fascism and left-wing outlook, largely stemming from their heritage as a club founded by migrants who considered outsiders by both Turkish and Greek people. This episode covers their history, the heritage and identity of the AEK Athens support, along with Nikos' and Thanos' memories of supporting the club. But with his excellent first season at the City Ground, it has only perked the interest of more and more clubs around Europe, with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea and of course Spurs showing interest in the Brazilian. Olympiacos and Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has set his sights on more silverware after the club's “crazy dream” became reality with victory over Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final. Ayoub El Kaabi's extra-time winner secured a first major European trophy for Olympiacos in an otherwise forgettable contest taking place at the home of their domestic rivals AEK Athens. “We are very happy and proud,” Marinakis, “The people of Olympiacos have been singing about a crazy dream for 99 years. Today is not a crazy dream, it is reality, here in Greece." Let us know what you think about all todays news and is there good signs on the Nuno front, as it seems like the Forest manager might be staying at the City Ground next season, and some speculation about his future.

Today, an increasing number of sports athletes are driving personal connections on different platforms and channels – especially on social media. Sports fans are looking to athletes and other sports influencers that champion societal issues that they believe in. They view these athletes as both meaningful and personalized connections. And this trend can be seen across industries beyond sports. On a global scale, 71% of consumers involved in a survey said that they either completely or somewhat trust opinions and ads from influencers about different brands and products. But what is an influencer? An influencer by definition is anyone who inspires or guides the actions of others. That's why athletes and players are the ultimate influencers when it comes to sports. If you are a smaller club and doubting the effectiveness of your players or any other influencers, don't worry. The increased interest and trust in influencers is particularly prevalent among micro-and nano influencers. These types of influencers are those who have less than 10 000 followers on social media. Influencers with fewer followers make more personal connections with followers and thus have a greater impact on driving supporter behaviors, such as trying a new product or attending a sporting event. So you see, anyone can leverage influencer marketing, from small clubs to big ones - there is a way for everyone to win. So how can you leverage influencer marketing in a creative way? To make this a bit more concrete for you, why don't we take a real-life example? This example shows the power of clubs understanding their fans and using every single moment to really push the envelope when it comes to increasing revenue. This example is from our customer PAOK FC a top-tier club in Greece. It's February 10, 2022, PAOK is facing AEK Athens for the second leg of the Greek Cup Quarter Final. The score is 1-0 for AEK Athens and PAOK qualifies only with a draw. Only a few seconds before the referee blows the last whistle, Jasmin Kurtić, one of PAOK's best players scores! Everyone goes crazy. What a game! So what does the PAOK team decide to do? They decide to leverage their success on the field to gain more success off the field. How? By creating a campaign that offers fans the opportunity to purchase t-shirts starring the legendary Kurtić. Their e-store sales rocketed by 66% on the 15th of February 2022 compared to the best day of the year so far (11th of January) They gave their fans and supporters something “extra” to be excited about which boosted engagement across their social media channels as well. What can we learn from the PAOK FC case? That: 1. Your intentions need action We all want to win and have great success in everything we do but we have to put our money where our mouths are. And that starts with being aware of opportunities as they show up. PAOK seized a moment that some might have not realized was a great opportunity. 2. You have to understand your supporters Do you understand your supporters? Do you know what keeps them coming back to your club for more? A great solution that you can start using is the sports customer data platform (CDP). That's because a CDP allows you to: 1. store all your supporter data in one place 2. it helps you analyze that data so that you can uncover patterns in your supporters' interaction with your organization Not only that but with the insights you get from the sports CDP, you can then act in real time by setting up measurable and monitorable goals. Footy on the Med's final game of the 2021-2022 season was on the Med, but not as John and Alex have come to know it. Alex's obsession with QPR and Stan Bowles saw him travel solo to Greece for AEK Athens v Olympiacos, by way of a reprise of the Rs' great UEFA Cup run of 1977. "I'm sorry, what UEFA Cup run? Anyway I can't make it, I have to watch some paint dry," said John, but he missed a treat. Playing their last game in the Olympic Stadium before next season's return to their spiritual home (the new Nikos Gomas stadium), AEK confounded a poor season and their furious fans with a decent display against Olympiacos, this year's Greek Super League champions. Thanks to the wonderful Paola Menachem, it wasn't all Greek to Alex. Recorded at the (rather tired) Olympic Stadium in Athens, with varying sound quality, Tuesday May 17th 2022. It ended AEK Athens 2, Olympiacos 3. More info at FootyOnTheMed.com

Dimitrios Konstantopoulos is a retired Greek professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper. He is currently the goalkeeping coach for EFL League Two side Hartlepool United. After playing amateur football with Iraklis Ampelokipi, Konstantopoulos signed his first professional contract with Kalamata in 1996; he would go on to make 12 appearances in six years for the club, with a spell at Egaleo yielding three further appearances between 2001 and 2002. He moved to Portuguese side Farense after this, before joining Hartlepool United in October 2003. After making 117 league appearances for Hartlepool, Konstantopoulos opted to switch to Coventry City in 2007. However, he was unable to hold down a first team place, and, after loan spells with Nottingham Forest, Swansea City (twice) and Cardiff City between 2008 and 2009, Konstantopoulos was released in 2010 having made 31 league appearances for Coventry. He returned to Greece, spending a successful season with Kerkyra before switching to AEK Athens for the next two seasons. Following AEK's relegation, he was released at the end of his contract, and joined Middlesbrough in August 2013. Internationally, Konstantopoulos made nine appearances for the Greek under-21 side, and made his full international début for Greece in 2011; this remains his only senior cap.

Horace Jenkins an American former professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and several teams in Europe and Israel. Jenkins graduated from New Jersey's Elizabeth High School in 1993. Jenkins played one season at Union County College, before leaving to tend to the birth of his son, Hakeem. Over the next three and a half years, Jenkins worked for the United States Postal Service, as an electrician, and on the back of a garbage truck. Once he saved up some money, he decided he wanted to go back to college, and play basketball. While at William Paterson University, Jenkins was a three-time Division III Player of the Year (1999, 2000, and 2001). He was also a three-time Division III All-American. He holds numerous school records, and also was named 2001 Basketball Times Division III Player of the Year. Jenkins was also the winner of the 2001 ESPN NCAA dunk contest, beating former Division I standout Jeff Trepagnier. USC's Trepagnier, one of the college's most prolific high flyers, missed his last dunk attempt, and the 6'1" (1.85 m) tall Jenkins, had one up his sleeve, wrapping it up with a foul line two-foot leaner. Jenkins attended all three NBA pre-draft camps, but he was undrafted in the 2001 NBA Draft. In the summer of 2001, Jenkins attended rookie camp with the Orlando Magic and also received an invitation to training camp with Orlando. However, he declined the invitation and signed with Cimberio Borgomanero, a team in the Italian second league. He received a guaranteed one-year contract. He spent the 2002 NBA Summer League with the New York Knicks, and the 2003 Summer League with the Seattle SuperSonics. Horace Jenkins got his break in the summer of 2004, playing in the NBA Summer League with the Detroit Pistons. He was previously playing with AEK Athens of the Greek Basket League, with Pistons draft pick Andreas Glyniadakis. Pistons president Joe Dumars was watching a film of Glyniadakis and spotted Jenkins. Jenkins averaged 20.1 points, 3.3 assists, and 1.8 steals in 12 EuroLeague games with AEK Athens. Impressed, Dumars invited Jenkins to summer camp in 2004. In summer camp, he averaged 8.2 points and 2.8 assists per game in 5 games. That was enough to garner a guaranteed contract from the Pistons, which he signed on August 4, 2004. His contract was a one-year deal worth $385,277. Jenkins started the 2004–05 NBA season on the injured list, but he did see NBA game action 15 times. He was on the bench for the raising of the Pistons' 2004 championship banner, as well as the Pacers–Pistons brawl. Rumors circulated that he was being traded to the Chicago Bulls, and also that he was going to leave the Pistons and return to Italy. His NBA debut was a two-minute stint against the San Antonio Spurs. He scored 9 points the next night against the New Orleans Hornets. Jenkins scored a career-high 10 points on December 10, 2004, against the Atlanta Hawks. He was one of only three Pistons to score in double figures in that game. He scored 2 points in his hometown of New Jersey on February 5, 2005. Five nights later, in a rematch of the 2004 NBA Finals, Jenkins scored 8 points, in only 6 minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers. He scored 6 points in 20 minutes in his final NBA game, which was against the Charlotte Bobcats. Although he was left off the playoff roster, the Pistons made the NBA Finals for the second straight year. Jenkins was notable for being one of the oldest rookies in the NBA, and his life story was the subject of a short presentation narrated by Jamie Foxx, on ABC, during the 2005 NBA Finals. Jenkins took the long route to the NBA, working to support his family, and then playing in Europe, before signing his first NBA contract, at the age of 29. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/letssipandtalkwithfrema/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/letssipandtalkwithfrema/support

After a growth spurt at the age of 14, he switched to basketball and made a name for himself with the national team. Following his college career, Geert had a brief NBA stint with the Orlando Magic and Golden State Warriors. Hammink eventually returned to Europe, where he had a lot of success in Germany and Greece.
