With President Trump's latest executive order cracking down on illegal immigration, many Christians are asking: What would Jesus do? Where do we draw the line between compassion and protecting our nation and families?Today, I sit down with Fr. Ambrose Criste, a Norbertine priest and theologian, to break down the Catholic perspective on this heated issue. We explore the U.S. Bishops' response, Pope Francis' stance, and J.D. A paper delivered to the 2019 Aquinas SeminarIn modern times there is a tendency to pit morality against intelligence, either in a voluntarist way that makes morality primarily a matter of the will or in a sentimentalist way that makes it primarily a matter of feeling. From the Thomist point of view, this is a mistake. Morality is an essentially cognitive enterprise, and hinges on the virtue of prudence – the habit of knowing the right thing to do and the right way of doing it. One cooperates with sins against prudence when one either encourages voluntarist and sentimentalist tendencies, or fails to discourage them when one has a special obligation to do so. In this paper I set out Aquinas's account of the nature of prudence and of the vices opposed to it. It turns out that there is a special connection between these vices and sins against chastity. Aquinas's account can in turn be developed into an account of the various ways one might fall into cooperating with sins against prudence. And it turns out that there is also a special connection between such cooperation and cooperation with sins against chastity. The key to understanding the special connection between sins against prudence and sins against chastity lies in Aquinas's account of the “blindness of mind” that is among what he calls the “daughters of lust.”

John DeRosa debuts his new book, One Less God Than You. If you have spent any time on Twitter, in a college quad, or at the dinner table with a freshman philosophy major, you’re probably familiar with the litany of slogans that religious skeptics employ in an attempt to rescue you from the foolish belief that God exists. Even our public schools and mainstream media often can’t help but parrot the tropes and memes that seem to leave thinking people with no alternative but to embrace atheism. How can a Christian respond? You can ignore them—but then you miss a chance to evangelize and to strengthen your own faith. You can spend years mastering theistic apologetics before you reply—but that takes, well, years. Or you can let John DeRosa (Classical Theism) help. In  One Less God Than You, he breaks down twenty of the most common atheist challenges, exposes their substantive and logical weaknesses, and shows you how to craft effective answers. Atheism is more aggressive and widespread than ever before, so we believers have a crucial task before us. Read One Less God Than You and prepare yourself to respond with the joyful truth that God is real. Questions Covered: 14:02 – If there’s more than one church with different beliefs, then which one should an atheist choose? Why should they join a church when people of faith are confused?  17:50 – Why don’t you use the argument of miracles to convince people about the existence of God?  23:15 – What is the best way to answer an intellectual atheist who talks way over my head?  30:16 – How can I respond to people who claim to be Catholic, but they don’t believe and follow Catholic teaching?  33:30 – How would you answer, “If God is all good and all powerful, then why does he allow so much evil and suffering?”  42:20 – I come from an atheist family.   Apologies for the sound quality today; Zencastr wasn’t working, so we recorded on Zoom, and even then there were problems with the audio especially in the latter half of the podcast.   The question we take up at the beginning of the Easter season is this: Why has Western society gone to such pains to throw away the best thing going, intellectually and otherwise?   In his ongoing podcast research, Paul has come across the Pat Flynn Show, and listened to some really good interviews with Fr. Robert Spitzer (a TSSM interviewee) and Ed Feser (whose talk at the 2018 Society of Catholic Scientists conference was the topic of one of our most popular episodes). Bob Spitzer’s interviews in particular were some of the most inspiring things I’ve encountered recently and really led me to propose this series of conversations with Bill about how Catholic Christianity is the best way of looking at the world.   Of course, Western society has drifted hard away from its roots in classical Greek and Jewish/Christian heritage. Ireland is the most recent example of a society, one of the last to retain a semi-traditional cozy relationship between the Church and the state, now deciding to punish the Church for the crimes of the hypocritical members of its clergy by trying to erase its very history. Progressivism in general replaces traditional dogmas with dogmas-of-the-day, and the record up to this point has been pretty dismal.   We spend some time discussing the roots of what the contemporary West seems to consider its greatest achievement, modern science, in the critical tradition of Scholasticism (knowledge of which was practically the first thing to go after the Reformation began the process of intellectually punishing the Church). We would do better to have a broader memory of the Scholastic tradition even among us Catholics...to recall that it was a movement in which Thomas Aquinas was embedded, rather than remembering only him. In our time as well we don’t need single hero figures, we need a community. The scientific community knows this very well.   We go on to consider what this fraught term “dogma” really means. The Christian dogmas are really testimony, and they can’t change without repudiating the unrepeatable testimony of the events of salvation history. This is the context of the warnings at the end of the Apocalypse of John, “cursed be he who adds or takes away from the words of this book.” As Chesterton and many others have pointed out, these dogmas are not a straightjacket but a foundation and structural members that allow us to build both intellectual structures and actual human lives that don’t sink into the morass of changing human inventions. Admittedly there are many Christians, Catholics included, who seem to take comfort in the false idea that the Bible, or Tradition, provides us all the answers we could possibly want to know and there is no need or use in further growth. That is not the teaching of Jesus when he commented that the Spirit would [future] lead us to all truth.   The high Middle Ages confronted the question of harmonizing Aristotle with Jesus Christ. This was both a creative and a logical process that led to great works of criticism and synthesis… excellent practice for the scientific process as we now know it.   A reminder that the Society of Catholic Scientists Conference is approaching June 7-9. Registration is open through May 15.

The new phrasing declares that the death penalty can no longer be applied in any case, anywhere in the world no matter the crime. Is this a legitimate “development of doctrine” as the Pope’s supporters affirm? Are Catholics now required to give the “religious submission of mind and will” to this new viewpoint of the Roman Pontiff, which, according to Vatican II’s Lumen Gentium 25, applies even to papal teaching that is not ex cathedra? Can the new Catechism be changed again? Associate professor of philosophy at Pasadena City College, Dr. Ed Feser, believes it can and, should, be rescinded. The teaching as now phrased seems to openly contradict, not merely amend or develop, the 2000-year-old support for the death penalty in some cases. This is one not to miss.   In this episode you will learn: Why, from the Bible, the Church fathers and doctors, and many saints, and sacred Tradition, the Catholic Church has traditionally supported the death penalty How the death penalty can lead to the repentance and redemption of the condemned The perils of letting vicious criminals continue their evil acts inside prison The strongly held opinion of Pope Francis that even life sentences are the practical equivalent of the death penalty, and therefore morally unacceptable How you can understand what the next steps might be in light of a worldwide effort to encourage the cardinals of the Church to revisit the Catechism reboot   Resources recommended in this episode: By Man Shall His Blood Be Shed: A Catholic Defense of Capital Punishment  by Edward Feser and Joseph Bessette 2004 CDF Statement on Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger Lumen Gentium 25 (“The Dogmatic Constitution On the Church,” Second Vatican Council) Capital Punishment and Roman Catholic Moral Tradition by E. In this episode we begin a series of recaps and discussions of the issues brought up by individual lecturers at the Society of Catholic Scientists conference on June 9 and 10. We start with Ed Feser's keynote, "The Immateriality of the Mind." Feser's objective was to highlight how our ability to be rational, and in particular for our thoughts to mean something unambiguous - even in the face of our inability to express ourselves in a completely unambiguous way in our spoken or written words - makes it difficult to maintain a purely materialist / physicalist view of human minds and therefore of the universe they inhabit. At the outset he noted that rationality tends to occupy less attention in philosophy of mind and matter than two other properties, consciousness and intentionality, which seem widely taken as more difficult to explain by our contemporaries. For ancient and medieval philosophers, however, rationality was probably the clearest indication that the human mind is not some sort of solely physical mechanism. Feser presents an argument via James Ross (Thought and the World) to try to bring this older consensus into the mainstream. It can be presented thus: Formal thought processes can have an exact, unambiguous content. Material signs and processes never have unambiguous content. Formal thought processes must employ an element not dependent on materials signs and processes. We discuss Feser's points and a few of our own in favor of the two premises: our inability to be sure of the content of arithmetical symbols used outside our own range of experience, the ambiguity of translating ancient languages like Linear A, and the absurdity of believing I can't ultimately know what I'm thinking about.

Arguments for God’s existence are all the rage, as Ed Feser exemplified well in the last two episodes. But what about us? What’s our nature as humans? Do we have a soul? How can we know that the soul is immortal and not just a few pounds of electric meat between our ears that produces cool experiences like a mythical God? Very few modern thinkers are devoting a lot of time to the question of the soul and whether it’s immortal. Plato thought so, as it most Greek philosophers. Certainly the Bible affirms it. The Patrick Coffin Show | Interviews with influencers | Commentary about culture | Tools for transformation

Fog of confusion has settled over the Catholic Church on a number of fundamental teachings in the last 50 years. This is the certainly the case with capital punishment. Countless Catholics have been led to believe that “the death penalty” is morally equivalent to abortion, and many documents from the episcopal level have appeared urging Catholics to vote against laws supporting it. The late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago tried to square the circle with his “seamless garment” approach. While Catholic moral teaching does belong to a whole tradition and thus can’t be segmented into separate silos, the net result of the Bernardin proposal has been further confusion. Did the Catholic Church change her teaching on capital punishment under Pope Saint John Paul II? What about the informal remarks by Pope Francis? What does the Bible say about it? Are there conditions under which a Catholic can still support capital punishment in good conscience? Enter Dr. Ed Feser, co-author with Joseph Bessette of a substantial guide to these questions and more. It’s titled By Man Shall His Blood Be Shed: A Catholic Defense of Capital Punishment, and you owe it to yourself to become familiar with what was once unexceptional and ultimately unquestionable. In this interview, Feser tackles the main objections I threw at him based on the many denunciations of capital punishment I have heard in my life. Finally, a voice of clarity and reason speaking to an issue so prone to emotion and sentimentalism.   Don’t forget to Subscribe to the show in YouTube, as well as the podcast so you can get the weekly show updates.
