Do theists have any good arguments at all? Not according to Richard Dawkins. He was recently interviewed by Alex O'Connor, aka the Cosmic Skeptic. When asked what good arguments he had encountered, Dawkins replied that theists (including Christians) have no good arguments. Zero. Zilch. Zip. If that seems like a pretty bold statement, you are not alone. Andy, Steve, and Wes came together this week to offer their reactions to both O'Connor and Dawkins, and to hash out some of the implications of such an extreme statement.
Join me in a new conversation with Alex O'Connor as we discuss a range of topics, including Jordan Peterson, Ayaan Hirsi Ali's journey into Christianity, my bafflement at how Alex could stand three years of studying the non-subject of theology, the fear of death, and other things.

Alex O'Connor is a YouTuber, writer and a podcaster. Grappling with difficult moral questions is a part of human life, but in the age of Wikipedia and ChatGPT, are we now outsourcing our morality? Are people becoming less moral over time? Join me as I have a conversation with @CosmicSkeptic about free will, and whether or not free will is dependent on the existence of God.
This week on Unbelievable we return to the topic of free will. Following the debate between Ben Shapiro and Alex O'Connor, Christian apologist Tim Stratton got in touch to say he took issue with some of Alex's arguments against free will. Indeed Tim noted that Alex agreed with Ben Shapiro that if there is no God, then there is no free will. Tim Stratton develops the argument in a spirited debate with atheist philosopher Alex Malpass, hosted by Andy Kind. Alex Malpass has a PhD in philosophy from the University of Bristol, and these days specialises in philosophy of religion, but also metaphysics and logic more generally. He runs a podcast called Thoughtology and an infrequently updated blog called the Use of Reason. Alex Malpass has published in various philosophical journals including the International Journal for the Philosophy of Religion. For Alex Malpass's book: History of Philosophical and Formal Logic: From Aristotle to Tarski go here Tim Stratton holds a graduate degree in Christian Apologetics from Biola University and a PhD in theology from North-West University. He is a professor at Trinity College of the Bible and Theological Seminary and the author of Human Freedom, Divine Knowledge, and Mere Molinism. He has also recently contributed a chapter to a book entitled, Faith Examined: New Arguments for Persistent Questions, Essays in Honor of Dr. Frank Turek. Stratton has coauthored multiple academic journal articles (most notably with J.P. Moreland) related to the topics of libertarian freedom, the problems of evil, and also responding to the Hiddenness Argument. To find Stratton's popular level work, find his videos on YouTube at FreeThinking Ministries and his blogs at FreeThinking Ministries.com or FreeThinkInc.org. His X handle is @TSXpress. Can you be a serious scientist and believe in God, and even believe in miracles? Tom Rudelius never thought much about God until his brother, a new convert to Christianity, challenged him to explore faith. Tom, now a rising young theoretical physicist based at Durham University in the UK made a journey to unexpected faith, through subsequent doubt and anxiety, and ultimately to a firmer, life-transforming allegiance to Jesus. Phil and Tom wrestle with creation and cosmic origins, the problem of evil and suffering, the compatibility of miracles with science and the plausibility of Jesus' resurrection. Phil Halper is an atheist, and Youtuber who's interviewed leading physicists from Stephen Hawking, Sir Roger Penrose to Alan Guth for his YouTube series Before the Big Bang. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and published several papers in peer reviewed journals on the Problem of Animal Suffering and has a new film on the subject which features other leading atheists such as Peter Singer and Alex O'Connor. Taking on Phil is Tom Rudelius author of 'Chasing proof, finding science'. Fresh from post doctoral research at UC Berkeley Tom is now Assistant Professor, Mathematical & Theoretical Particle Physics at Durham University, UK. Tom completed his undergraduate work at Cornell, earned a doctorate in physics at Harvard, and has conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. His research focuses on string theory, quantum field theory, and early universe cosmology. The Irish Blood Transfusion service is calling on the people of Clare to make urgent life saving donations in Shannon today. It comes as the group will be holding clinics at the Treacy's Oakwood Arms Hotel between 4pm and 7pm where they will be particularly seeking stocks of type 0 Negative blood. There are currently just 3.7 days of the stock available in the country , which is used to treat patients in emergency situations. IBTS Recruitment Executive and Broadford native Alex O'Connor says all donations will provide help to those who need it most.

In the second part of their discussion based on the book Coming to Faith Through Dawkins, theologian Alister McGrath and YouTuber Alex O'Connor discuss where we may be heading in regards to religion and atheism. Faith or Atheism: what's next? Recorded on 9/11, 22 years after the tragic events at New York's World Trade Centre, which in many ways provided a catalyst for the New Atheist movement, they discuss why New Atheism has lost its appeal, what some of the new concerns and questions are and whether anything will replace it. Alister shares the evidence that compelled him to move from atheism to Christianity and Alex contemplates what it might take to convince him that God exists. Unbelievable? delves back into history and asks Did new atheism fail? with one the world's best-known theologians Alister McGrath debating Oxford-educated philosopher and wildly successful YouTuber Alex O'Connor. Prompted by a new book Coming to Faith Through Dawkins which published on 29th August 2023, the book edited by Denis Alexander and Alister McGrath gathered other intelligent minds from around the world Australia, S. Africa, Egypt, USA, and the UK to share their startling commonality: Richard Dawkins and his fellow New Atheists were instrumental in their conversions to Christianity. Despite a wide range of backgrounds and cultures, all are united in the fact that they were first enthusiasts for the claims and writings of the New Atheists. But each became disillusioned by the arguments and conclusions of Dawkins, causing them to look deeper and with more objectivity at religious faith. The fallacies of Christianity Dawkins warns of simply don't exist. "This is a novel book: real-life stories of people who have actually come to faith, not in spite of but through Richard Dawkins. It must be his own worst nightmare!" - William Lane Craig Alister McGrath is a former atheist who discovered Christianity while studying the natural sciences at Oxford University. He has held a number of senior appointments during his career, including Professor of Historical Theology at Oxford, before taking up the Andreas Idreos Professorship of Science and Religion at Oxford, from which he retired last year. He also served as President of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics. McGrath is one of the world's best-known theologians and apologists, and is the author of the internationally acclaimed textbook Christian Theology: An Introduction, which has been translated into twenty languages. With his wife, he wrote a critique of Richard Dawkins's God Delusion which became an international bestseller. Later this year, he will publish a new textbook entitled Christian Apologetics: An Introduction. McGrath has three earned doctorates from Oxford University, in the natural sciences, theology, and intellectual history. The Irish Blood Transfusion Service is issuing an urgent call for people in Clare to participate in donation clinics on the outskirts of Ennis. The service needs to collect an extra 400 donations per week for the month of June, as it currently has provisions for just 3 days of blood supply, which is well below it's intended stockpile of seven days. IBTS last month issued a Pre-Amber Alert, meaning hospitals are being encouraged to conserve blood supplies amidst an immediate national shortage. A clinic will take place in St. Josephs GAA Doora Barefield this afternoon and Thursday at 4:50pm until 8:10pm and Broadford native & IBTS Rectruitment & Retention Executive, Alex O'Connor says that they need new donors more than ever.
On Tipp M's evening news, The 5.45: Blood stocks in Ireland are getting critically low - while we are not at an amber warning just yet, the Irish Blood Transfusion Service has issued a Pre Amber Alert. But what does that mean - and what is the impact? Sometimes it is easy to hear this and get on with your day but what if you are one of the people in need of a surgery that could be cancelled due to low supply. Alex O'Connor is the Donor Recruitment and Retention Executive for our region and he started by outlining to Sheila Naughton the current situation:
Christopher Hitchens was an Anglo-American writer, journalist, literary critic and essayist. Not a thinker who one can characterise easily, the one thing linking all Hitchens' writing and his utterances- he was a formidable debater- was his opposition to totalitarian thought. This often sparked controversy- especially his views on Islam and his support for the War in Iraq- but for all the descriptions of him as a shallow contrarian, the authenticity of his opposition to totalitarian ideologies cannot be denied. My guest today is Alex O'Connor. Alex is the founder of the Cosmic Skeptic YouTube channel and associated blog and podcast, where discusses issues principally related to ethics and religion. As well as Hitchens' life and work, we discuss the future of religion in Britain and the wider Western World. Does science have anything to say about our freedom of choice?Looking for a link we mentioned? It's here: https://linktr.ee/philosophyforourtimesA famed experiment, by Libet in the 1980s, led many scientists and philosophers to argue that free will was an illusion. Despite the experiment being challenged at the time and in recent studies, its legacy persists. Many materialists still contend that free will has been shown to be illusory, supporting their belief that humans are merely biological machines. We often imagine that experiment settles the matter, but should we instead conclude that our interpretation of experiment is a function of our desire to believe its outcome? Or can empiricism really determine the existence or non-existence of free will?Prolific British writer, philosopher and co-founder of The Philosophers' Magazine, Julian Baggini, renowned Australian philosopher of science, Peter Godfrey-Smith, and leading British neuroscientist and UCL professor, Sarah Garfinkel, argue about empiricism and its role in determining the existence of free will. Friends, one major theme appearing throughout the teachings of Pope Francis is the danger of technocracy. In his 2015 encyclical, Laudato si', he coined the term “technocratic paradigm,” using the term five times in the encyclical. Should we be concerned about our technocratic society, one dominated by tech and science and which, in turn, aims to dominates nature? That's what I discuss with Brandon Vogt today on “The Word on Fire Show.” A listener asks, what's the difference between the Protestant and Catholic understandings of the Church? Episode 53– Show NotesWe start with an argument from our series on 50 Arguments for God's Existence. This time“The Argument from Degrees of Perfection” by Catholic philosopher Peter Freeft. The following link gives a summary.https://peterkreeft.com/topics-more/20_arguments-gods-existence.htm#4We try our best to do the argument justice while discussing how it doesn't work for us.Somehow we drifted into mentioning the recent debate “Theism vs Atheism” between Jonathan McLatchie and Alex O'Connor. Here's the link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnIQFI1pYLM This idea of God's Perfection led us on to this pair of questions:1) Would a perfect God create a perfect world?2) Is this world perfect? It opened up what the Bible says on God being perfect, which is not just Jesus's words in Matthew 5v48 “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” The Old Testament Yahweh doesn't come across as perfect. We enjoyed the anger management in Exodus 33v3The classic Christian response to why our world isn't perfect while God is perfect is the Fall and Adam and Eve. We go back there again (sorry).
