The latest episode of All Things Judicial features an interview with Chief Assistant District Attorney Jennifer L. Martin who has served as a Forsyth County prosecutor since 1999. On the podcast, Martin shared about her upbringing in Stokes County and how the court led by U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren impacted her decision to become a lawyer. Later in the episode, she explored a common theme that runs through the lives of the criminal defendants that she has prosecuted during her 25-year career. "In my experience the most common denominator of my defendants are that they have dropped out of high school and that they have been born and live in poverty," said Martin on the podcast. "I know that poverty can be a factor but it is not the defining moment of your life. Poverty does not mean crime." Chief A.D.A. Martin has served in the Forsyth County District Attorney's Office from 1999 to the present, and teaches as a member of the extended faculty at Elon University School of Law and High Point University School of Law. She graduated in 1996 with a B.A. in English from Wake Forest University and earned a J.D. from the Wake Forest University School of Law in 1999.

Historical maps of Forsyth County displayed in the Wachovia Room at Old Salem's Moravian Research and Archaeology Lab. APRIL LAISSLE/WFDD County border lines in North Carolina are often far from symmetrical. That's especially the case for Forsyth County, which is certainly not a perfect square. That had listener John Strong wondering: “Why do Forsyth County's southern boundaries look like Swiss cheese?” WFDD's April Laissle spoke to Martha Hartley, the director of research at Old Salem's Moravian Research and Archaeology Lab, to find the answer. Diagram excerpted from The North Carolina Atlas: Portrait of a Changing Southern State. “Forsyth County's distinctive outline is a product of history and nature," Hartley says. That history is centered around the Moravian Church and its purchase of 100,000 acres of land in 1753 in the backcountry of North Carolina. Hartley says they named their new colony Wachovia after the Wachau Valley they knew in Austria with its similar rolling landscape. The Moravians chose the land due in large part to the richness of water resources. “The Moravians were thinking about the long term, they were thinking about a place that would support their plans for congregations and long-term stability," says Hartley. "And so this water, this amazing Muddy Creek system that is the backbone of Wachovia, is fed by thousands of springs and smaller tributaries. And when you think about where people are going to live in the 18th century, water is life." Wachovia was situated in Rowan County for the first 20 years the Moravians lived there. But by 1771, population growth prompted colony leaders to create Surry County by splitting up Rowan. But, they drew a dividing line right through the center of Wachovia, worrying the Moravians. “So the Moravians petitioned, and the line was redrawn in 1773, and it was redrawn by the Moravian surveyor. The southern line of Forsyth County is mostly from this particular moment, and it included the southern boundary of Wachovia, the distinct form that we see today.” Both the southern and eastern lines of present-day Forsyth County came mostly from the split that created Surry County. For the next 18 years, Wachovia sat in the southeastern quadrant of Surry County, but by 1789 the population had reached another tipping point. “As the population continued to grow, there was a need for people to be close to their county seat and courthouse, because that's where all the business is done, and it's a powerful place," Hartley says. So, Surry County was cut down the middle, with the eastern half becoming Stokes County. The lower western side of Stokes was generally drawn along the Yadkin River. Rivers made logical borders because they had to be crossed. The divide that would finally establish Forsyth County as we know it today didn't come for another 60 years. “In 1849 Stokes County was cut in half. And the lower portion, which contained Wachovia the whole while, was named Forsyth County after Benjamin Forsyth, a local statesman and war hero who was fatally wounded in the War of 1812," says Hartley. From there, leaders had to decide where to place the county seat in the new Forsyth County. “At that time, Salem was a center for trade and growing industry and was located in the middle of the new county, the logical place for a county seat," Hartley says. "But Salem was a theocratic community. It was a religious place, and church leaders did not want a courthouse in Salem with its courthouse business and places of execution. So within the Salem town lot, they sold 51 acres in the northern part for the new county seat, which was ultimately named Winston.” The borders of the county have stayed more or less the same since then. The original Wachovia tract still fills the middle of it. And in many ways, Winston-Salem's city limits reflect Wachovia's historic borders. In local news, The Watauga Democrat reports police are looking for a suspect who ran a cyclist off the road. The incident happened on Jefferson Road, off 4-21, when a black pickup truck with a trailer attached passed too closely to the bicylist. This caused the person on the bike to run off the roadway causing injury. The extent of those injuries is unknown at this time. The suspect was driving a black pickup truck with an attached trailer hauling tires. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers or the Boone Police Department. In state news, WRAL reports a wildfire hits a remote area of North Carolina. Dakota Paris, a forester of the N.C. Forest Service said the fire at the southern tip of Sauratown Mountain began sometime Tuesday morning. For reference, this is happening in Stokes County, approximately 40 minutes north of Winston-Salem. Crews used bulldozers Tuesday to create a fire break and protect homes nearby. The fire is burning in an area without access roads for vehicles. The recent warm, dry weather, coupled with low humidity, is making controlling the fire difficult. For now, firefighters are using rocks and leaf blowers to contain the fire. In national news, NPR reports a Capitol Rioter who hit a police officer will spend three years in prison. Scott Fairlamb was sentenced Wednesday and will likely become a benchmark for dozens of other Capitol rioters who engaged in violence. These charges stem from the Jan. 6 attacks on the US Capitol. Fairlamb was the first person to be sentenced for assaulting a law enforcement officer during the riot. His prison term is the longest among 32-riot related sentences handed down so far. Over 650 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the Jan. 6 riot. This afternoon's weather report is brought to you by Boone Weather dot com. Expect cooler temperatures this afternoon with decreasing clouds. High temperatures will top out around 56 degrees, with low temperatures falling to around 35 degrees.

What challenges do North Carolina farmers face in making the best use of new technology when they lack affordable high-speed internet? And what's being done about it? In this episode of Farms, Food, and You, two farmers and two broadband professionals talk the need for high-speed internet and what's being done to expand access.GuestsBeverly Mooney operates Millstone Creek Orchards in Ramseur with her husband, Nick. The 80-acre farm was started by her father as a retirement occupation. He planted fruit trees and opened the farm to the public for you-pick operations, hayrides and picnics. Today, the farm produces blueberries, blackberries, peaches, grapes, pumpkins and pecans – “a little bit of a lot of things,” as Mooney puts it. It's also a popular agritourism destination. Robert Knight grew up in Rockingham County, the son of a teacher and a lineman for a power company and the grandson of two tobacco farmers. He spent most summers working on his maternal grandfather's farm in Stokes County. After graduating from high school in 2004, he started farming tobacco. The next year, after the tobacco buyout that ended federal quota and price support programs, he turned his attention to grains and timber. Now he's begun to explore agritourism opportunities for his seventh-generation farm.Kenny Sherin serves as both state coordinator of broadband access and education and Randolph County director for North Carolina Cooperative Extension. He grew up on a family farm in fast-growing Union County. Recognizing the development pressures, his father encouraged him to find an off-farm job. Sherin went on to earn a doctorate in rural sociology and community development from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has worked for Extension in both Missouri and South Dakota, and he returned to North Carolina in 2019.Jeff Sural is broadband infrastructure director for the North Carolina Department of Information Technology. He grew up in Greensboro and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a law degree from Western Michigan University's Cooley Law School. He spent 15 years in Washington, D.C., in policy and legislative liaison roles. The broadband infrastructure office he leads works to expand and enhance broadband access to all North Carolinians.

I was honored to have as my guest, Representative Amos Quick, III (D) of North Carolina. Rep. Quick talked at length about the status of the redistricting in NC as our state waits for the Supreme Court to decide whether they will hear a full appeal from NC's GOP of the re-drawn district lines. Rep. Quick also spoke at length about North Carolina's challenges in education, detailing his goals for improvements. He outlined that the four pillars of his work to encompass: Education, Employment, Environment and Empowerment for the citizens he represents. Discussing the need to bolster our NC Law Enforcement, he detailed his legislation to support "whistle blowers" within our police departments - protecting them from retaliation. He discussed how greater transparency, training, and awareness of inappropriate policing strengthened good policing and enhanced support for the police from the community. He discussed the recent controversy surrounding the pipeline, proposed to be built in NC and off shore drilling discussions and how these could potentially impact our water systems and outdoor recreational facilities. He championed the need to recognize the residents of Stokes County, North Carolina who continue to be forced to purchased bottled water due to the contamination levels in the water supply in this geographic area. Rep. Quick further presented the need to empower women and all voices within our state who may not be fairly and equally presented and repeatedly acknowledged fellow House Representatives such as Jon Hardister (R), Pricey Harrison (D) and Senator Gladys Robinson who he has worked with to write legislation. He lauded the need for bi-partisan legislation and team work to fairly and equally represent the people of North Carolina.

Some of the highest peaks in the Sauratown Mountains can be found here including Moore’s Knob, the tallest point in Stokes County, where you can enjoy the 360° view from the observation tower.
