Episode 739: What is Trump Promising to Big Donors? Lindsey Graham in the MAGA Crosshairs

Ring of Fire Radio with Sam Seder and Mike Papantonio

This week on Ring of Fire! At his fundraiser this past weekend, Donald Trump promised the crowd of wealthy supporters that he would fight to keep their taxes low if he gets back into office. This was part of his sales pitch to ensure that they give him money for his campaign. The wealthy class doesn't care about his coup attempt or his criminal charges or the threat he poses to the country - all they care about is saving a few million dollars a year on their taxes. The company that is backing Donald Trump's fraud trial bond has come under fire from prosecutors, and Judge Arthur Engoron has even scheduled a hearing with the company to determine if they can even afford to post it. And now new reports have found some serious discrepancies with the actual contract that the company produced for the bond that could result in it being completely thrown out. Lindsey Graham wasn't happy with Donald Trump's recent comments about letting states decide what rights women are allowed to have (Lindsey wants the federal government to take those rights away,) and this prompted Trump to go nuclear against his former friend. But it didn't end there. Later in the day, Trump decided to finish off Graham for good, and Trump said that he takes the blame for Graham existing in the Senate because his endorsement is what saved his career. It is safe to say that, for now, this relationship appears to be over. A federal judge has taken the unusual step of sending a letter to the "friends and allies" of a convicted Capitol Rioter, warning them to stop saying that the man did "nothing wrong" and to stop condoning and downplaying political violence. While the letter was supposedly meant for the convict's inner circle, it read more like a warning to the Republican Party itself that continues to downplay what happened on January 6th. All that, and much more, on this week's Ring of Fire Podcast!

Trump Launches Brutal Attack Against DeSantis That May End Him For Good

Shortly before Ron DeSantis took the stage last Thursday to be publicly humiliated by California governor Gavin Newsome, Donald Trump's campaign team got on social media and launched a brutal new attack against the Florida governor that could end up ruining his entire political career. Trump's team called DeSantis an "OnlyFans wannabe model" and then said that he was "thirsty AF" for attention, which is why he was debating Newsome in the first place. Farron talks about this brutal attack and what it means for DeSantis' future. Also, a convicted Capitol Rioter that is serving a 55 month sentence for his actions on January 6th has written a letter to the courts asking for a compassionate release. In the letter, the convicted rioter says that he learned his lesson and that he was manipulated at the time by both Donald Trump and Fox News. But the question is whether this person has ACTUALLY learned anything and has gotten the right help, or is he trying to just get away from an unpleasant situation? And Democrats in the Senate late last week voted to issue subpoenas to two high-profile Republican donors that have been at the center of the SCOTUS payoff scandal. Accountability apparently doesn't sit well with Republicans, as the Republican Senators on the Judiciary Committee staged a walkout in protest of the subpoenas. This isn't about a political vendetta or bad legislation - this is about making sure that our highest court isn't corrupt to the core, but answering that question is just too much for the GOP.Finally, an appeals court handed Donald Trump a significant defeat on Friday, agreeing with a lower court's ruling that the former president CAN be sued in civil court for the events of January 6th. Trump is facing several lawsuits from injured parties that day, and now that the cases have repeatedly been given the green light, it could spell financial disaster for Trump.

A campaign aide for Donald Trump's 2024 presidential run has been identified as one of the members of the mob at the Capitol on January 6th. The man threatened police officers, and a video shows him saying that he "works for the Republican Party" and that he is "going to attack." It is not clear if the man entered the Capitol, and so far no charges have been filed against him for his actions that day. Also, a pair of right wing hosts on Real America's Voice are having to defend a recent interview that they conducted with "Donald Trump" after allegations emerged that they were actually talking to an AI chatbot. The hosts swear that they were talking to Trump, but the former president's campaign has not confirmed whether it was actually him. The network is now going to launch an investigation to find out what exactly happened. And Sarah Palin just can't stop herself from saying the dumbest things imaginable while pretending to be smart, and she outdid herself in a recent Newsmax interview when she claimed that DEMOCRATS are the ones behind the impeachment push to take down President Biden. Palin claims that Democrats want to limit their liability in 2024 by getting rid of Biden, but reality has already proven that Republicans are pushing this. And finally, Donald Trump has gone completely berserk after New York attorney general Letitia James revealed in court filings that he over-inflated his net worth by as much as $2 billion. James made the comment based on all the evidence that she has acquired and reviewed over the past year, but Trump got on social media to not only say that he's super rich, but also to accuse James of "defaming" him.

During an interview on Joe Rogan's podcast this week, comedian Jim Gaffigan was forced to dismantle Joe Rogan's conspiracy theories about the Capitol Riot when Rogan claimed that it "is a fact" that the federal government had plants that provoked people into attacking the Capitol. Rogan also hinted that the man currently suing Fox News for calling him a fed plant may have been a plant, which could open Rogan up to serious liability problems. Also, a Texas man has finally been arrested and hit with felony charges over his alleged involvement in the Capitol Riot. The man was seen in footage pushing and grabbing at police officers as he pushed his way into the building, but it was the way that he was caught that might make him the dumbest (alleged) Capitol Rioter that we've seen to date. And finally, before Donald Trump went in for his official arrest and arraignment, he sent out a post on Truth Social where he essentially threatened everyone in the country that isn't on his side. Trump said that "Soon it will be our turn" to use the DOJ to go after his enemies, a claim that should be used against him in his upcoming trial. The man is on a path of revenge, making the prospect of a second term even more terrifying.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied having any intentions of using nuclear weapons in Ukraine but described the conflict there as part of alleged efforts by the West to secure its global domination. A new U.S. defense strategy says China remains the greatest security challenge for the United States despite Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine. The U.S. economy grew at a 2.6% annual rate from July through September, snapping two straight quarters of contraction and overcoming high inflation and interest rates just as voting begins in midterm elections in which the economy's health has emerged as a paramount issue. Average long-term U.S. mortgage rates topped 7% for the first time in more than two decades this week. President Joe Biden has announced that al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Kabul. Biden is hailing the operation as delivering “justice” while expressing hope that it brings “one more measure of closure” to families of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. Kansas is having the first test of voters' feelings since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade. Its voters were deciding Tuesday whether to allow state lawmakers to further restrict or ban abortion. The measure is a proposed anti-abortion amendment to the Kansas Constitution and voting on it coincided with the state's primary, when the electorate typically skews conservative and Republican. The Supreme Court has certified its month-old ruling allowing the Biden administration to end a cornerstone Trump-era border policy to make asylum-seekers wait in Mexico for hearings in U.S. immigration court. The sparse entry records that justices voted 5-4 that the administration could scrap the “Remain in Mexico” policy, overruling a lower court that forced the policy to be reinstated in December. The Ohio Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty for a man convicted of killing a couple whose house and dog he was caring for while they were away on vacation. Death row inmate George Brinkman was convicted of the 2017 deaths of Rogell and Roberta John and sentenced to death by a three-judge Stark County panel. A Texas man convicted of storming the U.S. Capitol with a holstered handgun, helmet and body armor has been sentenced to seven years and three months in prison. The sentence imposed Monday is the longest so far among hundreds of Capitol riot cases. New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge hits another home run, lots of trades in major league baseball, and Deshaun Watson gets a six game suspension. Another round of rainstorms are hitting flooded Kentucky mountain communities. The rain fell Monday as more bodies emerged from the sodden landscape, and the governor warned that high winds could bring another threat — falling trees and utility poles. Thirty people have already been killed amid the rising water, and hundreds of others remain unaccounted for. Gov. Andy Beshear said that death toll does not include some recently recovered bodies. California officials say two bodies were found inside a charred vehicle in a driveway in the wildfire zone of a raging blaze that is among several menacing thousands of homes in the western U.S. The McKinney Fire in Northern California was burning out of control Monday in Klamath National Forest. The Department of Housing and Urban Development is providing $2.8 billion in fresh funding for homeless services organizations across the country. Gas prices have been falling, but for how long? Prices are below $4 gallon in more than half the gas stations around the country. But as prices decrease, demand may increase and slow prices from falling further. Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson was suspended for six games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy following accusations of sexual misconduct made against him by two dozen women in Texas during massage treatments. The White House is making more than $1 billion available to states to address flooding and extreme heat exacerbated by climate change. Vice President Kamala Harris is set to announce the grant programs Monday at an event in Miami with the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other officials. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is proposing new regulations that would force food processors to reduce the amount of salmonella bacteria found in some raw chicken products or risk shutdowns. The proposed USDA rules announced Monday would declare salmonella an adulterant — a contaminant that can cause food-borne illness — in breaded and stuffed raw chicken products. The Vatican says Pope Francis will travel next month to Kazakhstan. It's possible that he could meet there with Patriarch Kirill, the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church who has justified Moscow's war in Ukraine. The first ship carrying Ukrainian grain has set out from the port of Odesa. The departure of the ship laden with corn follows an internationally brokered deal that is expected to finally allow large stores of Ukrainian crops to reach foreign markets and ease a growing hunger crisis. The Major League Baseball trade deadline is always a stressful time of year for the league's 30 general managers. Add COVID-19 vaccination status to the list of concerns. The Toronto Blue Jays have the toughest constraints as the only team in Canada. Federal regulators are giving Boeing the green light to soon resume deliveries of its big 787 airliner. In local news, The Watauga Democrat reports police are looking for a suspect who ran a cyclist off the road. The incident happened on Jefferson Road, off 4-21, when a black pickup truck with a trailer attached passed too closely to the bicylist. This caused the person on the bike to run off the roadway causing injury. The extent of those injuries is unknown at this time. The suspect was driving a black pickup truck with an attached trailer hauling tires. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers or the Boone Police Department. In state news, WRAL reports a wildfire hits a remote area of North Carolina. Dakota Paris, a forester of the N.C. Forest Service said the fire at the southern tip of Sauratown Mountain began sometime Tuesday morning. For reference, this is happening in Stokes County, approximately 40 minutes north of Winston-Salem. Crews used bulldozers Tuesday to create a fire break and protect homes nearby. The fire is burning in an area without access roads for vehicles. The recent warm, dry weather, coupled with low humidity, is making controlling the fire difficult. For now, firefighters are using rocks and leaf blowers to contain the fire. In national news, NPR reports a Capitol Rioter who hit a police officer will spend three years in prison. Scott Fairlamb was sentenced Wednesday and will likely become a benchmark for dozens of other Capitol rioters who engaged in violence. These charges stem from the Jan. 6 attacks on the US Capitol. Fairlamb was the first person to be sentenced for assaulting a law enforcement officer during the riot. His prison term is the longest among 32-riot related sentences handed down so far. Over 650 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the Jan. 6 riot. This afternoon's weather report is brought to you by Boone Weather dot com. Expect cooler temperatures this afternoon with decreasing clouds. High temperatures will top out around 56 degrees, with low temperatures falling to around 35 degrees.

A man who pleaded guilty to breaching the Senate chamber during the US Capitol insurrection was sentenced Monday to eight months in prison in a closely watched case that could influence how hundreds of other rioters charged with the same felony are punished. Paul Hodgkins, a 38-year-old Floridian, is now the first Capitol rioter charged with a felony to be sentenced. He pleaded guilty last month to obstructing congressional proceedings -- specifically, the counting of the electoral votes, which he helped delay by storming the Senate chamber on January 6. He spent about 15 minutes inside, wearing a Donald Trump shirt and carrying a Trump flag. The sentence is less than the 1.5-year sentence that the Justice Department asked for. Hodgkins was seeking probation. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

In this episode of FEVER DREAMS, hosts Will Sommer and Asawin Suebsaeng welcome HuffPost reporter Ryan J. Reilly, who dishes on some of the wildest, least expected, and flat-out dumbest ways alleged U.S. Capitol rioters have been handed over to the feds. Some are, intentionally or accidentally, snitched out by their wives or significant others. Others get screwed by people who hated them in high school. Others get arrested following the help of amateur “Facebook stalkers.” Additionally, Suebsaeng takes the listener into a strange, dark ride through Donald Trump's “voter fraud” tipline, complete with deranged tales of dick pics, pornographic Trump deep-fakes, and “a hell of a lot of buttholes.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

One of the alleged Capitol rioters has asked a judge for permission to holiday in Mexico while awaiting trial. The accused, Jenny Louise Cudd, made the request to continue with a planned work visit to Mexico later this month, despite awaiting trial on charges she took part in the US Capitol on 6 January. According to court documents obtained by USA Today, the woman will not be able to travel to Washington DC, the nation's capital, under the conditions of her release. She asked a magistrate on Monday if she could leave the United States and holiday in Mexico's Riviera Maya, with prosecutors taking “no position” on the request. It remains under consideration.
