Welcome to this week's The Struts Life—and oh, what a treat we have for you! Today, we're pulling back the curtain on something fans have whispered about for years: Luke Spiller's secret musical. Yes, it's real, it's magical, and it's every bit as brilliant as you'd hope. The story begins in the Victorian-esque town of "Clevedonahue," inspired by Luke's own childhood in Clevedon, and follows James Walker, an orphan whose inheritance sets him on a fantastical, rock-infused adventure. Luke spills all the tea about crafting this world, from writing songs in a tiny garden outhouse to recording quirky sound effects with his family and cat. It's part radio drama, part musical theater, and all Luke's unique vision. Plus, we share an exclusive song from the project and chat about his upcoming solo shows and Struts releases. Boston Globe movie critic ODIE HENDERSON joins us to talk about his new book, BLACK CAESARS AND FOXY CLEOPATRAS: A HISTORY OF BLAXPLOITATION. For this, Odie has programmed two equally stony but very different examples of the film movement that further funkified the 1970s. First, Shakespearean actor William Marshall brings dignity and pathos to the title character of the horror classic, BLACULA from American International Pictures in 1972. (Where would this podcast be without AIP???) We debate how to pronounce the name of BLACULA costar Thalmus Rasulala and Odie explains why Count Dracula is a redneck. Blaxploitation musical interludes, cool Los Angeles locations, and just how scary this classical horror movie really is are also discussed at length. Then Odie chooses the strangest and trippiest Blaxploitation movie of all time for our B-feature with DARKTOWN STRUTTERS (1975), and yes, Bob concedes that it's even weirder than HUMAN TORNADO!!! Which means is pretty f--in weird, stoners. You will want to be high AF for this sci-fi, funk, disco, biker-babe slapstick comedy all mixed together with subversive social satire. It melted all of our minds so bad that we don't even know what movies are going to be in our next episode! The ancestors were definitely telling the filmmakers how much spice to put into this one, and it was a lot. We went long for this episode so it violates our unwritten rule that no episode of OMFYS should be longer than a b-movie, but Odie has a lot to say and all of it was terrific and deep. What do you cut out? NOTHING! In our extended opening segment, Odie explains his personal connection to Blaxploitation and recalls trips to the grind houses of New York's 42nd Street (the Deuce) during his childhood. We also got a great fan letter from Larry Clow and Cory and Odie give him awesome ideas of things to do during his upcoming trip to Los Angeles. Thank you writing to us Larry! Hey Strutters! This week is monumental as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of "Everybody Wants." Originally released in the UK on July 28, 2014, this debut album has shaped the band's trajectory despite initial challenges. Remember the iconic single "Could Have Been Me"? It's still rocking hard! We take a nostalgic trip down memory lane, revisiting the tracks that didn't make the 2016 US reissue and discussing the bittersweet differences. As always, we're diving deep into the music that influences our favorite band, and this week's pick is a legendary classic that you won't want to miss. In today's episode, Luke and I wrap up our series on influential albums by spotlighting Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell." Luke shares how discovering this album on vinyl during a tough time in his life offered both solace and inspiration. From the epic theatrics of Jim Steinman's songwriting to the relentless passion Meat Loaf brought to each track, this album has left an indelible mark on Luke's musical journey. Whether it's the dramatic spoken word intro of "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth" or the rebellious energy that courses through the entire album, Luke's insights will make you appreciate this rock masterpiece even more. So, grab your headphones and let's get lost in the music together. Don't forget to leave us a review and join our official Strutters group on Facebook to keep the conversation going. ABE PARTRIDGE sounds older than his chronological age, and there’s a very good reason for that – he’s packed a lot of living into his 37 years. This troubadour grew up in Alabama, moved to a rural enclave of Kentucky, and served with the Air Force in Qatar in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon his return to the states, he turned his attention to being a singer/songwriter & creator of folk art paintings. Partridge draws listeners in with a combination of southern gothic storytelling and a dark humor reminiscent of the late Townes Van Zandt – delivered in a gravelly tone that conjures up images of Tom Waits in his barstool warming days. Partridge is currently putting the finishing touches on a new album he is recording with Nashville guitarist/producer Shawn Byrne. NORA JANE STRUTHERS has written "some of the most quietly powerful narratives within the new wave of Americana artists," says Ann Powers of NPR Music. Born in Virginia, raised in New Jersey and living now in Nashville, Strutters has built her career on these kinds of songs. There’s an honesty and energy to Nora Jane’s stage presence; a vulnerability that is part and parcel of great artistry. In one moment, she joyfully leads the audience in a dance party ... in the next, she lays her soul bare for the world to hear. Her new album ‘Bright Lights, Long Drives’ finds the poetry in the everyday and in life’s little miracles. ABE PARTRIDGE sounds older than his chronological age, and there's a very good reason for that – he's packed a lot of living into his 37 years. There's an honesty and energy to Nora Jane's stage presence; a vulnerability that is part and parcel of great artistry. In one moment, she joyfully leads the audience in a dance party ... in the next, she lays her soul bare for the world to hear. Her new album ‘Bright Lights, Long Drives' finds the poetry in the everyday and in life's little miracles. Back from vacation, we cover last week’s trip to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, the laws and rights of having animals on our property and Comic Mom weighs the pros and cons of getting a shock collar for her dog Roscoe, and ponder if Roscoe’s trespassing on a cataloger’s property prompted a boy scout popcorn boycott. Next, we discuss broken windshield solutions, gun training for teenagers in school, and if lobotomies for criminals is a good idea. That spilled into a discussion about what rights a person should lose after serving the sentence for his crime and do we really need to know where sex offenders live? If so, why don’t we need to know where every criminal lives? We also take a look at life as a felon, is it really that easy to rehabilitate yourself when you have to check that box on an application and if you can’t vote but pay taxes, isn’t that taxation without representation? Finally, we close with Comic Mom’s story about an acquaintance involved in a teacher student relationship, what an MRS degree is, the sluts of Meredith College, the Strutters of what is now Texas State University, and a little about the Super Bowl.

What most folks don't realize however, is that Michael actually got his start in the industry based off the fact that he is an NWTF World Turkey Calling Champion. Of [...]
