As always, we're diving deep into the music that influences our favorite band, and this week's pick is a legendary classic that you won't want to miss. In today's episode, Luke and I wrap up our series on influential albums by spotlighting Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell." Luke shares how discovering this album on vinyl during a tough time in his life offered both solace and inspiration. From the epic theatrics of Jim Steinman's songwriting to the relentless passion Meat Loaf brought to each track, this album has left an indelible mark on Luke's musical journey. Whether it's the dramatic spoken word intro of "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth" or the rebellious energy that courses through the entire album, Luke's insights will make you appreciate this rock masterpiece even more. Hello, it's me, Billy Amendola. Welcome to this week's Drum Channel Podcast. My guest today is Gethin Davies of the UK band The Struts. The Struts are one of the newer breeds of bands, keeping the rock flag flying high since 2012.  Today, Friday, August 19th, ten years later, the bands latest single, “Fallin' With Me,” is their first release on the label Big Machine. A singalong-anthem-rocker, the song has been a favorite in concert where the band has recently returned from a sold-out UK tour.  The British 70s/80s influenced rock band, now relocated in California, has four times the personality. The band features the magnetic showman/lead singer Luke Spiller, bassist Jed Elliot, and guitarist Adam Slack. Together, they have ranked up over 300 million streams here in the United States.  The new single “Fallin With Me” is produced by Jayson DeZuzio (Imagine Dragons)  The band is hard at work recording a new album and has previously shared the stage with the Rolling Stones, Mötley Crüe, Guns N' Roses, the Killers, The Who, and the Foo Fighters. Gethin says “We will be releasing our next album and we are very excited at the prospect of putting out some new music and performing the new tracks live. We will be back touring relentlessly soon in an effort to bring rock 'n' roll music back to the mainstream! See you on the road! Thank you all for listening, and I hope you check out our music.” Enjoy the podcast!

The first music Adam Slack's of The Struts remembers is Oasis in the car in England during the 90's. When he was 10 he got into Michael Jackson and bought his album BAD. His friend turned him onto Green Day right before American Idiot came out. When he saw the video “Minority” he knew what he wanted to do and started a band with a lot of Green Day influences. Watching videos, he learned how to play guitar. At age 15 his mom exposed him to 70's bands that she listened to in the 70's, which were more glam and he started listening to Slade, Mott The Hoople and T Rex. A couple years later he got away from the punk and went more glam retro for inspiration. That's when he met singer Luke Spiller in 2009 through his manager who found Luke on MySpace. Adam talks about opening for the Stones. The gig that changed everything was the first Rolling Stones gig. We managed to get that in Paris. We went over there and opened up for them in France which was insane playing in front of 80,000 people. Adam reached out to a random guy who was a YouTube guitar teacher in LA and sent him a photo in front of the stadium crowd from the Stones show who hooked him up with a guy who he knew and eventually got new management which got them going in the states. After getting tested for COVID-19, singer Luke Spiller, guitarist Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliott, and drummer Gethin Davies all moved into the Los Angeles home of Jon Levine, a producer who worked extensively on their acclaimed sophomore effort YOUNG & DANGEROUS (including the album’s chart-climbing lead single “Body Talks”). Within just ten days of couch-crashing at Levine’s house, The Struts had laid down nine original tracks and one masterful cover of a KISS B-side: a lean, mean body of work that amounts to their most glorious output to date.In an organic turn of events for a band massively embraced by some of rock-and-roll history’s greatest icons—a feat that’s included opening for The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Guns N’ Roses—Strange Days finds The Struts joining forces with a formidable lineup of guest musicians: Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott and Phil Collen, Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes, Tom Morello, and Robbie Williams. Mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer (Panic! At the Disco, Arctic Monkeys, Johnny Marr), the result is a powerhouse album that lifts The Struts’ glammed-up breed of modern rock to entirely new and wildly thrilling heights.Despite its prescient title, “Strange Days” took shape from a voice memo Spiller recorded on the band’s tour bus way back in summer 2019. Fused with a cabaret-inspired interlude Spiller had recently dreamed up, the song ultimately evolved into the perfect vessel for the frontman’s force-of-nature voice: a tenderhearted epic that offers incredible solace in the most chaotic of times. As Spiller reveals, the making of Strange Days was a period of joyful productivity. “Every day I’d wake up at about 7 a.m., get three venti Americanos delivered to the house, go out to the backyard and smoke a couple of spliffs, and listen to the voice memos I’d recorded at the sessions the day before,” he recalls. “After the first four days or so we hit a bit of a wall, so we decided to get some beers in and just stay in the pool all day—and the day after that we knocked out three whole songs.” Throughout Strange Days, that kinetic energy manifests in the album’s unbridled spirit, an element that makes every track exhilarating. “I think because we’d wanted to make an album this way for years, all that excitement and hunger led to an immediate sort of magic once we started working on it,” says Spiller. “It was undoubtedly a magical ten days for us—and I hope when people hear the album, it gives them a taste of that magic too.”We want to hear from you! We had the opportunity to interview The Struts! In just a few years, The Struts have found themselves massively embraced by some of the greatest icons in rock-and-roll history. Along with opening for The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Guns N’ Roses, the U.K.-bred four-piece was hand-picked by Mötley Crüe to serve as the supporting act for their last-ever performances, while Dave Grohl praised them as the best band to ever open for Foo Fighters. After making their full-length debut with 2016’s Everybody Wants, The Struts now return with YOUNG&DANGEROUS — a sophomore album that cements their status as one of the most unstoppably passionate and endlessly thrilling bands making rock music today. On YOUNG&DANGEROUS, The Struts let loose with the sing-along-ready and riff-heavy sound they’ve brought to stadiums and arenas all around the world. Working with producers like Butch Walker (Weezer, Panic! At the Disco) and Sam Hollander (Fitz and the Tantrums, Neon Trees), the band adorns that sound with deeper grooves and more inventive textures, dreaming up a majestic glam-rock revamp that’s unabashedly fun but full of pure heart. The lead single from YOUNG&DANGEROUS, “Body Talks” brings that dynamic to a blues-spiked track capturing what Spiller calls “that moment when you mosey on over to someone on the dancefloor, and the music’s blaring so loud you can’t even talk to each other.” In creating an alternate version of “Body Talks,” The Struts amped up the song’s seductive power by enlisting Kesha to lend her soulful growl to a fiery duet with Spiller. The Struts also infuse some social commentary into YOUNG&DANGEROUS sending up selfie culture on the falsetto-laced epic “In Love With A Camera,” taking on trolls with the swampy and smoldering “Bulletproof Baby,” and pondering identity with the sweetly melodic “Who Am I.” And for the soaring and glorious “Primadonna Like Me,” The Struts brilliantly turn the lens on themselves. “It was written about my stage character, my alter ego,’” notes Spiller. “It’s this completely deluded guy running around his small town, all dressed to the nines—a full-on 21st century dandy going around saying, ‘Don’t you know who I think I am?’”Formed in Derby, England, in 2012, The Struts almost instantly drew a major following with their outrageous live show, and later made their debut with Have You Heard (a 2015 EP whose lead single “Could Have Been Me” hit #1 on Spotify’s viral chart). Before they’d even put out their first album, the band opened for The Rolling Stones before a crowd of 80,000 in Paris and toured the U.S. on a string of sold-out shows. Known for his lovably swaggering stage presence—the very factor that gave The Struts their name—Spiller soon inspired legendary designers like former Queen costumer Zandra Rhodes to custom-create his lavish and glittering onstage attire. As the frontman points out, that heightened element of spectacle is all a part of the band’s mission of making an unforgettable impact on the crowd. “We believe in giving our absolute all every night, because that’s what our fans deserve,” he says. “The goal is always to get everyone dancing and screaming and shouting, and to make sure they leave dripping in sweat with huge smiles on their faces."With the release of YOUNG&DANGEROUS, The Struts have undoubtedly met another of their main ambitions as a band. “One of the things we most want to do with our music is inspire young people to pick up a guitar again,” says Spiller. “We live in a time that’s very much dominated by hip-hop and dance music, and that’s a great thing, but we want to give the world a big reminder that there’s something else going on out there. This album is our way of saying, ‘If you feel a little out of place, there’s always an electric guitar—and just look at what you can do with it.’”Luke Spiller (vocals) - Adam Slack (guitar) - Jed Elliott (bass) - Gethin Davies (drums)https://thestruts.com/“Annoy people politely.”— Adam Slack of The Strutshttps://www.bringinitbackwards.com/ Tera@BringinitBackwards.com CREDITS: Theme Song: Scott Russo Design: Oscar Rodriguez Photo: Anna Lee Media

"It was brilliant, absolutely brilliant", gushed Luke Spiller, vocalist for The Struts, talking about the first show of his bands support run with Greta Van Fleet in Sydney on Tuesday night. "We flew onto that stage like a bat out of hell and it was absolutely amazing to see how receptive and welcoming the Sydney crowd was. I'm not taking anyhting away from Greta whatsoever - it's actually a compliment to their fans - but certain parts of the show felt like it was our own gig. It was brilliant. I mean, everyone was singing along and clapping their hands and I got everyone down on the floor and jumping back up... It was an absolute triumph"!Australian fans have been waiting ten years to see The Struts perform in this country, with Spiller promising the band would make up for their absence in the best way possible."We haven't neglected anyone", he laughed. "It's just been one of those things but things happen for a reason and I think now is the right time that we can make this trip work. We are coming back as soon as we can, trust me. Hopefully it will be in 2019".In the full interview Luke reveals his affinity with this country despite never having actually performed here, last years album Young and Dangerous, the reasons behind having released only two albums in ten years, future recording plans, the birth of The Struts, opening for some of the biggest bands in the world and lessons learnt from the experience and more.
