Rod Dreher On The Rise Of Totalitarianism In The West & Lessons From Soviet Dissidents

So what you're saying is...

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2021 40:14

This time on #SWYSI, we are joined by Rod Dreher, senior editor at The American Conservative and author of the New York Times best-seller "The Benedict Option", one of the most discussed religious books of the last decade. Rod's newest book is called: "Live Not by Lies: A Manual for Christian Dissidents" (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Live-Not-Lie...) In this book, Dreher draws on the wisdom of Christian survivors of Soviet persecution to warn American Christians of approaching dangers. "For years, émigrés from the former Soviet bloc have been telling Rod Dreher they see telltale signs of soft totalitarianism cropping up in America--something more Brave New World than Nineteen Eighty-Four. Identity politics are beginning to encroach on every aspect of life. Civil liberties are increasingly seen as a threat to safety. Progressives marginalize conservative, traditional Christians, and other dissenters. Technology and consumerism hasten the possibility of a corporate surveillance state. And the pandemic, having put millions out of work, leaves our country especially vulnerable to demagogic manipulation. In Live Not By Lies, Dreher amplifies the alarm sounded by the brave men and women who fought totalitarianism. He explains how the totalitarianism facing us today is based less on overt violence and more on psychological manipulation. He tells the stories of modern-day dissidents--clergy, laity, martyrs, and confessors from the Soviet Union and the captive nations of Europe--who offer practical advice for how to identify and resist totalitarianism in our time. Following the model offered by a prophetic World War II-era pastor who prepared believers in his Eastern European to endure the coming of communism, Live Not By Lies teaches American Christians a method for resistance: - SEE: Acknowledge the reality of the situation. - JUDGE: Assess reality in the light of what we as Christians know to be true. - ACT: Take action to protect truth. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn famously said that one of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming totalitarianism can't happen in their country. Many American Christians are making that mistake today, sleepwalking through the erosion of our freedoms. Live Not By Lies will wake them and equip them for the long resistance." #RodDreher's "Live Not By Lies" is available from Amazon and all good book shops: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Live-Not-Lie... --------------- SUBSCRIBE: If you are enjoying the show, please subscribe to our channel on YouTube (click the Subscribe Button underneath the video and then Click on the Bell icon next to it to make sure you Receive All Notifications) AUDIO: If you prefer Audio you can subscribe on itunes or Soundcloud. Should hate crimes be treated differently or more severely than other crimes? The shocking murder of Sarah Everard has focussed national attention on violence against women. But should mysogyny be a specific hate crime? The charges brought against the suspect in the Sarah Everard case are for murder and kidnap. Is that sufficient? Or should the murder and kidnap of a woman be treated differently from the murder and kidnap of a man? If misogyny were a hate crime, what would it cover? Whistling and cat calls on the street? Lecherous remarks? By whose/what standard is this to be judged? More broadly, how is it possible to know how much a person's actions are motivated by misogyny or any form of hate? Are all domestic abuse cases mysogynistic? Andrew Doyle, author, satirist and creator of the social media sensation "Titania McGrath", returns to the #SWYSI sofa to discuss his new book: "Free Speech And Why It Matters". (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Free-Speech-... ) Free speech is the bedrock of all our liberties, and yet in recent years it has come to be mistrusted. A new form of social justice activism, which perceives language as potentially violent, has prompted a national debate on where the limitations of acceptable speech should be drawn. Governments throughout Europe have enacted 'hate speech' legislation to curb the dissemination of objectionable ideas, Silicon Valley tech giants are collaborating to ensure that they control the limitations of public discourse, and campaigners in the US are calling for revisions to the First Amendment. However well-intentioned, these trends represent a threat to the freedoms that our ancestors fought and died to secure. In this incisive and fascinating book, Andrew Doyle addresses head-on the most common concerns of free speech sceptics, and offers a timely and robust defence of this most foundational of principles. Known for his appearances on the Joe Rogan Experience, Rubin Report and, most recently, Jordan Peterson's podcast, Prof. Gad Saad is a world-renowned Canadian evolutionary psychologist at Montreal's Concordia University. He also hosts ‘The Saad Truth’ YouTube channel. In this episode of "So What You're Saying Is..." (#SWYSI), Prof. Saad discusses his best-selling new book, "The Parasitic Mind: How Infectious Ideas Are Killing Common Sense". This fascinating work exposes how an epidemic of idea pathogens are spreading like a virus and killing common sense in the West. He argues that, as a result, the West’s commitment to freedom, reason, and true liberalism have become endangered by a series of viral forces in our society today. Serving as a powerful follow-up to Jordan Peterson’s book "12 Rules for Life", Dr. Saad unpacks what is really happening in progressive safe zones, why we need to be paying more attention to these trends, and what we must do to stop the spread of dangerous thinking. Dr. Saad dissects a multitude of the concerning forces (corrupt thought patterns, belief systems, attitudes, etc.) that have given rise to a stifling political correctness in our society and how these have created serious consequences that must be remedied - before it’s too late. As the 1871 Ku Klux Klan Act is invoked in a lawsuit against former President Trump, we revisit our conversations with author Natonne Elaine Kemp about White mob violence of the Reconstruction Era. And what is happening in Texas? The same week that the U.S. lands a rover on Mars, residents throughout the second largest U.S. state don't have clean water and hundreds of thousands are still in the dark and in the cold.   Plus more headlines: Post Trump impeachment... Justice for four Colorado activists who fought for Elijah McMclain: Lillian House, Joel Northam, Terrance Roberts and Eliza Lucero... This week in history... Parler back on... Newsclick battles on... Helen is the founder of 'Counterweight', the newly launched "Citizens Advice" service for "culture war casualties". to quote from their website: "Following the death of George Floyd and the BLM protests, new policies and training programmes based on Critical Social Justice ideology suddenly began to be introduced into workplaces, universities and schools. "Many people who found CSJ at odds with their own principles spoke out against this and were formally censured, disciplined or fired for voicing their conscientious objections to the new orthodoxy. Many more self-censored for fear of such consequences. "Thousands of such individuals began to seek help and advice from people who had spoken publicly about the threat to liberal societies posed by Critical Social Justice. We created a Discord server so that we could triage the incoming appeals, prioritise people facing immediate danger of disciplinary action and provide practical information, support and resources to people with less urgent problems. "Individuals can most effectively resist authoritarian impositions of Critical Social Justice beliefs when they thoroughly understand CSJ and can confidently articulate their principled opposition. Dave Rubin, host of The Rubin Report & author of "Don't Burn This Book", returns to "So What You're Saying Is..." to discuss identity politics in the West and what lies ahead for America under a woke Biden presidency. In Biden's first few weeks in office we have seen cabinet appointments and executive orders steeped in identity politics, such as insisting that womens' sport be open to trans competitors. Dave Rubin talks about the state of Trumpism in the USA and whether Trump or a similar figure will be able to carry the movement through to the next election. Rubin believes key elements of Trumpism (patriotism, resistance to critical race theory and the woke agenda etc. etc.) must be saved and carried forward. With almost every institution now dominated by woke ideologues and ideology, Rubin believes the only solution is to start creating new, alternative, non-woke institutions. This is a massive project that would need to cover every imaginable institution, from schools, to tech companies, publishing houses or even banks. How can this be achieved? What do the non-woke need to do? Dave Rubin says opportunities will arise and these must be seized. He is doing this himself through his https://locals.com/ platform, which aims to provide a free speech safe haven where videos and material can be hosted beyond the reach of Big Tech. This time on "So What You're Saying Is..." Peter Whittle is joined by Andy Ngo, an American journalist best known for covering the extremist Antifa ("Anti-fascist") movement. While the term "Antifa" has become well known in recent years, most people know little about this far-left movement of anarchists, communists and other radicals. When Ngo was attacked in the streets by Antifa in the summer of 2019, most people assumed it was an isolated incident. But those who'd been following Ngo's reporting in outlets like the New York Post and Quillette knew that the attack was only the latest in a long line of crimes perpetrated by Antifa. In his eagerly anticipated new book "Unmasked: Inside Antifa's Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy", Andy Ngo tells the story of this violent extremist movement from the very beginning. He includes interviews with former followers of the group, people who've been attacked by them, and incorporates stories from his own life. This book contains a trove of documents obtained by the author, published for the first time ever. As a result of his investigations, Ngo was forced to flee his hometown of Portland Oregon due to Antifa death threats. Ngo is editor-at-large of The Post Millennial news website and has published columns in publications such as the Wall Street Journal and The Spectator. This time on "So What You're Saying Is....", Peter Whittle is joined once again by Brendan O'Neill, editor of Spiked Online and a columnist for various national and international publications. A lockdown sceptic, Brendan believes the tier system is horrendously damaging. He also finds the phrase "the new normal" unbelievably scary, believing it should worry us all. When people assume almost total control of our lives to the extent that they tell us when we can leave our house, who we can hug at Christmas, when we can travel and go to work, when we can go to pubs and restaurants and what we must eat whilst we are there, they are not just going to relinquish that. There are a lot of people who like telling people what to do, and they've had a real taste for authoritarianism over the past year and it will be a really big wrestle to take back our freedom from those that took them away. Covid & Class: The attacks on pubs in particular reeks of classism, Brendan O'Neill argues. But also during lockdown those who were comfortable probably had a pleasant experience, living in their larger homes, with their secure jobs and the ability to order food from companies such as Deliveroo. Meanwhile, for the rest of society life was unbearable. Lockdown revealed an important class divide -- one which was not refelected by the (middle class) media. Brendan also believes that Boris has bottled it on the culture wars. His silence during all of the momentous events of the past few months (Black Lives Matter, statue controversies, legacy of Churchill and the singing of Rule Britannia at The Last Night of the Proms, national institutions auditing their collections based on connections to slavery etc.) should be a major source of concern for everyone. Nevertheless, he thinks the Tories still have time to retain their advantage over Labour because Keir Starmer and Labour are far too woke and out of touch with the Red Wall. What is "The Great Reset"? An initiative of the World Economic Forum, the WEF describes it as follows: "There is an urgent need for global stakeholders to cooperate in simultaneously managing the direct consequences of the COVID-19 crisis. To improve the state of the world, the World Economic Forum is starting The Great Reset initiative." But what does this really mean and how might it affect nations and people? What is the intention of the Great Reset and why is it so controversial? Is there more to this than meets the eye? Should we be concerned? Joining us on #NCFCounterCulture to discuss this are: * James Delingpole, writer, journalist, columnist and Executive Editor of Breitbart London * Ben Sixsmith, a writer and contributor to The Spectator & Quilette who has written extensively about The Great Reset. Peter Hitchens: The Left's Long March Through UK Institutions Is Complete

So what you're saying is...

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 13, 2020 42:03

In the earliest stages of Covid-19, Peter Hitchens was one of the few public voices who was opposed to the lockdown and the tactics that were being employed. As time has proved him correct, he regrets but is not surprised that he has not been afforded greater media exposure during this crisis. He thinks it absurd that there has been so little proper criticism or opposition to the government's measures and that journalists are so placid in their questioning of ministers. Most of these meausres are neither proportionate nor of much use, yet the public have embraced them wholeheartedly. This he believes is akin to doing things out of supersitition. The government, he argues, has embarked on the biggest and most expensive propaganda campaign in peacetime, to concince the British public to commit acts of enormous self harm that were wholly disproportionate and unjustifiable in relation to the severity of the pandemic. He wonders what lies ahead for transport and big cities if people are no longer commuting in to city centres and if office space declines, with all the knock-on effects that will have for businesses that depend on offices and office workers. He points out that no-one should be surprised by public institutions such as the National Trust and British Library becoming involved in political controversies such as Black Lives Matter. This was always going to be the result once the left had completed its "Long March" through the institutions. The left's silent revolution is a fait accompli, and now they are enacting and reacting in accordance with their ideology. He explains that much of the current "social justice" and culture war problems we see today originates in the Equalities Act of 2010, an Act brought in by the Labour Government but one which the Conservative Party -- which by this point had become a Blairite Party led by the Blairite David Cameron -- did little to oppose. "If I were under 30 I'd have left (Britain) long ago", Hitchens states. "I've never seen a country more finished -- and I've seen some finished countries." The problem Britain faces is that with our 2 party system (which Hitchens supports), it is impossible for a new party to rise up until there is a vacancy. This is how the Labour Party emerged to replace the Liberal Party -- and this is the only way that the Conservative Party or Labour Party will in turn be replaced. News From The Front Line In The UK Culture Wars -- Save Our Statues Campaign Update

So what you're saying is...

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 11, 2020 28:17

On this week's #NCFCounterCulture we provide an update on the "Save Our Statues" campaign, which was launched during the summer of Black Lives Matter attacks on historic British statues. Topics discussed include various official "audits" of collections in order to identify individuals with alleged links to slavery and the slave trade, however tenuous or risible these might be. These range from the Welsh Government's survey of historic statues to the British Library's review of figures including such unlikely -- and implausible -- characters such as Oscar Wilde, George Orwell and the poet Ted Hughes. In London it has been revealed that Sadiq Khan's commission on statues etc. has already cost £250,000. This means that Londoners are footing the bill for these politicized reviews. On the positive side: The National Trust has had a huge decline in revenue due to collapse in both new and renewing memberships. The National Trust's review was also criticized by the head of the Charity Commission, who said that charitable organisations should not involve themselves in such divisive issues. The application to remove the listed statues of Thomas Guy & Sir Robert Clayton at, respectively, Guy's & St. Thomas's Hospital have been removed following receipt of some 600 public complaints (due in part to the campaigning of Save Our Statues). Government ministers have been speaking a bit more vocally and positively on these cultural issues. What we need to see now is some form of legislation or other means of formal protection. The panel: Peter Whittle, Founder & Chairman of Save Our Statues Richard Bingley, General Secretary of S.O.S. Robert Poll, Online & Social Media Coordinator for S.O.S. Emma Webb from Civitas, Executive Member of S.O.S.
