The Caucus of Rank and File Educators (CORE) led by Karen Lewis, a charismatic high school chemistry teacher, was elected to lead the Chicago Teachers Union in 2010. Lewis was a brilliant, transformational labor leader, and CORE developed a forceful form of social justice union organizing they called “organizing for the common good.” They foregrounded the best interests of the child, and they insisted on raising issues beyond wages and benefits, standing up for the arts, libraries, and nurses in every school as well as for the rights of families and the broader community. Among CORE's early initiatives were starting a research department, and moving staff away from exclusively servicing the contract toward ongoing organizing of parents, community members, and teachers together. We're joined by Elizabeth Todd-Breland, an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and author of both the award winning A Political Education: Black Politics and EducationReform in Chicago Since the 1960s and the recently released memoir, I Didn't Come Here to Lie, written with the late Karen Lewis and published by Haymarket Press.

Wall Street tycoons wake up to realize that their guy Trump is a lunatic. Ben riffs. Elizabeth Todd-Breland talks about I Didn't Come Here to Lie, the new book she co-wrote with the late, great Karen Lewis, former president of the Chicago Teachers Union. Who, among many other things, galvanized the national labor movement by leading Chicago teachers on a strike against Mayor Rahm. Why did mainstream Chicago hate her so much? And why are so many of these same haters trying to re-write history about their relationship to her? And more, including...Ben compares Karen to Harry Truman, a comparison that's not nearly as nutty as it sounds. It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with author and labor organizer Jane McAlevey about the UAW's recent progress in obtaining tentative agreements with the Big Three automakers, as well as the state of U.S. labor organizing writ large. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's bombing of Gazan refugee camps, international backlash to Israel's ongoing ethnic cleansing, more GOP infighting, labor action, Trump's legal cases, a suit against realtors, Biden's student loan program, and the continued need for humanitarian aid in Ukraine, before touching on Wolf Blitzer's astonishment as he interviews an unapologetic IDF spokesperson on the recent bombing of refugee camp in Gaza. Jane McAlevey then joins, walking through her insider perspective on the evolution of the labor movement over the last three decades, with the Chicago Teachers Union's election of Karen Lewis in 2010 marking a major turning point in the raising of worker expectations across the US, planting the seeds for a renaissance of worker action over the next decade, before the Pandemic slammed a brief lid on growing discontent, ramping up the pressure on the working class and resulting in the post-COVID explosion of labor action across the US. Next, McAlevey focuses in on the UAW's particular journey over the last decade, beginning with an assist from the DOJ with an investigation into the corruption of UAW leadership forcing the union structure's hand in holding a direct election of the next union president, a choice that – when joined with low voter turnout – saw the election of Shawn Fain (despite extended pushback from remaining leadership). Moving into the era of Fain, McAlevey explores what we can learn from the UAW's incredible militancy, and addresses the biggest errors she sees facing modern unionization attempts, before she, Sam, and Emma assess the rulings coming out of the NLRB, and the valuable (but limited) impact they can have. McAlevey also tackles both what the UAW's strike won, and why that victory was so important, before wrapping up with what's on the horizon for labor organizing in the US. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma talk about AI and copyright, watch the footage of Code Pink's protest of Blinken, and address the absurd and enraging conflation of anti-zionism and anti-semitism. The MR crew also shares some bigfoot stories, watch Mike Johnson and Tulsi Gabbard present their bigotry on Fox, and Joe Rogan and Elon Musk invent a perpetual smoke-blowing machine. Plus, your IMs! In January of 1993 Karen Lewis and her daughter Lauren returned home to Amarillo Texas from a shopping trip the two had taken to Dallas. It was Super Bowl weekend and the two were expecting to see David, Karen's husband and Lauren's father-knowing that he, as a fan of the Dallas Cowboys - who had been playing in the Super Bowl that year, would more than likely be watching the game. However, they were shocked to find instead of David there were two fresh sandwiches in the fridge, the VCR tape still recording, David's wedding ring and watch on the counter, and David Glenn Lewis- missing. David Glenn Lewis's case would go cold for the next eleven years, but even when the family had answers to what happened to him the answers only actually led to a series of far more questions. This is one of the most baffling missing person cases I have stumbled across and I have a feeling you might feel the same way when today we ask the question what really happened in the case of David Glenn Lewis? December 8, 1941 came like a storm as the Japanese aircraft began bombing and strafing Manila and other American outposts in the Phillippines Island, at that time an American colony. For Karen Lewis, the daughter of an American accountant for a gold mining company, it started out as an adventure - leaving the mining camp at Baguio to head for safety in Manila. It quickly became much more harrowing - three years of confinement in Santo Tomas, a Catholic University just across the Pasig River from the city proper, along with 3,000 other mostly American and English detainees. Karen was 9 years old at the time, and witnessed the resilience and determination of the adults to organize a highly functioning and organized community, with school, dining halls, sanitation and entertainment under the watchful eye of their Japanese civilian commandant. But when he left after a year and was replaced with a military commander, things took a darker turn, and discipline often proved brutal and rations dwindled down to starvation portions. News was hard to come by, but filtered through hidden transistor radios as the Allied offensive pushed the Japanese back through the South Pacific to the gates of Santo Tomas, shortly after MacArthur's prophesied return. We talk about her daily life in the camp, how it was organized and how it functioned, as well as the odd coincidences and humanity from detainees and guards alike. Lewis gathered up her story along with three other women for "Interrupted Lives: Four Women's Stories of Internment During WWII." The well-known painter and stalwart of the Ojai Studio Artists has lived in Ojai for 30+ years and stays active with gatherings of Santo Tomas survivors. We did not talk about Joe DiMaggio, Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon or William Howard Taft.

Jesse Sharkey, Beverly J. From red states to blue states, Chicago to Arizona, teachers are rising up to challenge vouchers, privatization and racially disparate school funding schemes. Why have teachers been able to turn the tables on the austerity program and charter industry in such a short period of time? What about teacher unions are strategic within the national and global economy that allows them to exercise such tremendous power and success across geography and circumstance? Join president of the Chicago Teachers Union, Jesse Sharkey in conversation with Beverly J. Silver, one of the most foremost scholars on the strategic power of teachers' unions. Silver has studied the last 150 years of union power and ascertained some common threads that made miners, steel workers, auto-works, and now teachers so capable of shifting the narrative and balance of power in capitalist countries throughout the world. ---------------------------------------------------- Speakers: Jesse Sharkey was appointed president of the 24,000-member Chicago Teachers Union on September 5, 2018, replacing retiring President Karen Lewis. A member of the CTU since 1998, Jesse has been a champion of workers' rights throughout his career, believing that the Union's true power comes from the strength of its rank-and-file and their willingness to fight for the betterment of Chicago's public school students, families and communities. Beverly J. Silver is Professor of Sociology and the Director of the Arrighi Center for Global Studies at Johns Hopkins University. She has written widely on the contradictions and limits of historical capitalism, major waves of labor and social conflict, the social foundations of world hegemonies, global inequality, and prospects for a post-capitalist world. On today's show, a report from the frozen ground in Texas as Rick Levy, president of the Texas AFL-CIO, talks with The Rick Smith Show about the real reason the power grid failed there this week. Then we've got two reports from Australia: in the first, Radio Labour on challenges facing workers in Australia's energy sector, and then on Solidarity Breakfast we'll hear about a new report on the health of truck drivers. It may not be that surprising but it's certainly shocking. Next up, we go to the UK for the UnionDues podcast, which features a fascinating Thought for the Day on employee surveillance in an age of home-working. Back in the States, Labor Radio on KBOO explores the issue of hero pay for grocery store workers and from Building Bridges Radio, a Black History Month Special as Nikole Hannah-Jones from the “1619 Project” reminds us that there's little that defines the United States that doesn't somehow have the legacy of slavery at its foundation. We wrap up this week's show with the latest Labor Radio Podcast Network member profile from Empathy Media, this time with Tanya Hutchins, host of Activate L!VE from the Machinists union. We start off with a couple of very short clips from the latest Belabored podcast; in the first you'll hear Celine McNicholas of the Economic Policy Institute on Joe Biden's labor agenda and then we'll hear Karen Lewis of the Chicago Teachers Union, who we lost recently. On this episode of Labor Express Radio, we celebrate an agreement between the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and Chicago Public Schools on a plan for an at least safer return to schools than what CPS was originally demanding. It is a victory for the union who had fought hard to ensure the safety of school personnel and students alike during this pandemic. We also mourn the passing of Karen Lewis, President Emerita of the CTU, whose leadership and vision helped build the union into one of the most militant, progressive and powerful union locals in the nation. Our guest, Jackson Potter, was one of the founding members of CORE, the reform caucus behind the leadership of the union under Karen Lewis and Jesse Sharkey. During our conversation, we talk about how she designs her screen prints, the biggest unfounded fear about screen printing, the importance of handmade products and following her passion led to her fabric lines. In 2007 mutual funds specializing in non-U.S. stocks returned a fat 16% while funds with diversified holdings in U.S. equities returned just over 6%. In fact the foreign-stock funds have beaten domestic-stock funds over periods of two three five 10 and 15 years. Wharton finance professor Karen Lewis studies this issue in a paper titled ”Is the International Diversification Potential Diminishing for Foreign Equity inside the U.S.?” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
