As a portrait photographer, our heart sings at the thought of lighting and photographing and all the creative things that we would like to dream up for our clients, but have we considered that what our clients might REALLY want, what they might really NEED, is a Trusted Advisor to help them make sense of the portrait process and decide which images will look best in their homes?  Someone who's opinion they can trust.  A guide for every step of the process. In today's podcast with Jed Taufer, we talk with two seasoned photographers, Kathryn Langsford and Lara Blair, about how they made the transformation from camera-for-hire to positioning themselves as an expert to serve their client in more complete and better ways.  As we discuss the evolutions of their businesses, you will hear about the pitfalls and mistakes they have made on the road to finding the value that comes from being the expert and Trusted Advisor that your clients need; mistakes that you can learn from and avoid in your own business.  Join us for this final (and my favorite) segment of our Pixels to Product series with Jed Taufer - where we dive into PROfiles of making change.   Timestamps: [02:21] The issue with selling a product for digital files in photography. Portrait photography is an art. The ability to capture something beautiful with your camera is truly something to be treasured and shared and enjoyed by others. However, for most of us, portrait photography is also a business. The way we put food on the table and support our families.  Blending photography and business can be its own kind of art. And being able to sell our art without turning into a Salesy Jerk is truly a beautiful thing. The transition from awkward salesperson to a true artist of the Sales Room comes as you ReWork your thinking. As you start to realize that the portrait sale isn't about you but about meeting the needs of the client, you can more confidently approach your sales appointments.  Thanks to a well done consultation, you can enter into the sales appointment prepared and excited to be the expert they need to guide them through the portrait buying process.  In this podcast, we talk with Jed Taufer for the 3rd segment in our Pixels to Product series. Pricing is one of those hot topics that makes most photographers squirm. For most photographers, you KNOW you aren't charging enough, but you can't quite wrap your brain around how to charge more. What if you lose all of your clients? What if other photographers think you're crazy? What if…? There are a million fears swimming around in our minds when it comes to raising prices. I know. I have had them too! But all of the growth in my business has come from shifting how I think about pricing- by moving from competition-based pricing (what everyone else is charging) to value-based pricing.  Rather than worrying about whether or not someone is going to pay what you charge, think about how you can offer your clients a service and a product worth the price tag!  Jed and I both know the feeling of fear that comes with raising prices, but we also know how it feels to be paid for the value we give. So join us today for a VALUABLE lesson that could completely change the way you think about pricing!    Timestamps: [01:14] Why pricing is one of my and Jed's favorite topics of discussion. [02:38] Negative feelings and misconceptions that many photographers have around pricing.  [06:01] The three main pricing strategies available to portrait photographers.  [08:07] Jed explains the journey that he has gone through in his business with regard to pricing.  [12:01] A key to pricing right; valuing yourself! [15:45] Problems that I have with education in the photography realm.   [16:48] Why you should stop comparing yourself to other photographers.  [19:16] Various factors that I took into consideration in order to determine my pricing structure.  [24:02] How not pricing your photographs correctly will negatively impact your relationships with your clients.   [27:44] The reaction I received from the first client I had after I doubled my prices.   [31:39] I run through the process that I went through when increasing the prices of my products.  [33:31] What clients care about far more than the price of your products.  [37:00] The questions that you should be asking yourself when determining your pricing.  [41:24] Why you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't increase your prices yearly. [43:06] How the demand for Jed's work changed when he began increasing his prices.  [47:45] The problem with the way many photographers communicate their price increases with their clients.   [52:56] Examples of better ways to explain why your prices are going up.   [56:48] How the value that you assign to your work affects the way your clients experience it.  [58:21] Jed shares a story of an artist who charges $10 000 to position his artworks in his customers' homes.  [1:00:45] What I want my clients to tell other people about my work.  [1:02:35] An overview of the conversation I recently had on Clubhouse about pricing.    Links and Resources: Do The ReWorkWebsite | Instagram Allison Tyler JonesWebsite | Instagram | LinkedIn Jed TauferThis Conversation [Website] | This Conversation [Instagram] | Instagram

To sell or not to sell? When it comes to developing a successful photography business, that is always the question. While industry experts have long since shown that there is more money in selling product, many photographers continue to prefer to shoot and burn. Why? Because making the transition to selling product feels beyond overwhelming.  But you don't have to do it alone.  In this four part podcast series with Jed Taufer (which originally aired on his podcast, This Conversation sponsored by White House Custom Color), we will explore the process of taking an image from Pixels to Product. Before we can communicate the value of what we do to our customers, we first need to learn to value ourselves, our time, and our work. Today's episode is all about value, and who better to discuss this with than  Jed Taufer, host of the This Conversation podcast, and someone who has had a positive impact on my own career. There are a number of factors which value is built upon, some of which are objective, and some of which are subjective. Jed, through his years of experience on both the studio ownership and photo lab sides of the photography industry, has created a list of game changing factors relating to value, a few of which he shares with us today.  Among other topics, we discuss mentors, minimalism, and the “hire slow, fire fast” approach Jed and his business partner and wife Vicki have adopted.   Timestamps: [0:01:02] An introduction to today's guest, Jed Taufer, host of the This Conversation podcast, and what we are going to discuss in this episode.  [0:03:16] Where a sense of value originates from.   [0:05:45] The experience I had with my husband when he joined my business.   [0:07:40] The money-saving breakthrough by using a Wacom Tablet. This is not wishful thinking; it's what genius means.Words matter—we use them to communicate. So, let's look into the word genius, its origin and meaning. Then, we can start building on genius. The word genius is made up of gen- and -ius. As the Director of Marketing, Holleigh Taufer works with her marketing manager staff who are taking care of Scorpion's clients. She gives advice, offers a fresh perspective, and helps the managers think in futures for the client. She also works closely with Google to help Scorpion clients set up Local Services ads. Previously called home service ads, Local Services ads are a new paid service Google is rolling out. What are Local Services ads? Local Services ads are different than Google Ads. They have a different platform and a different view. Local Services ads only include the business's phone number and reviews. Google has taken a close look at what helps someone make a decision about a business and is dedicated to helping the consumer find the business that will provide a solution for them. In fact, Google background checks the business, business owner, and employees of the business that is applying to place a Local Services ad. Not only that but if the job isn't done right, Google guarantees to give the consumer up to $2000 toward the project to get it done right. Why your home services business should get involved now. > “The number one reason in my book is that the lead cost is super low - > anywhere from $20-$30 for a given lead. And if you're a plumber or an > HVAC guy, you've been used to paying considerably more in Google > Adwords. So those $30 leads are incredibly cost effective and they're > really good leads.” The process has several requirements and can take around 4 weeks to be completed. Tips for making the process efficient: Make sure your employees submit all of their background checks in a timely fashion. They cannot begin the process of approval until they have all of the background checks. Make sure all of the background checks are submitted with the exact company name. Varying company names or acronyms can hold up the process. Work with a Google Premier Partner like Scorpion to streamline the process and take the paperwork off of your hands. We work directly with our Google representative on your behalf and allow you to focus on your work. Local is the priority. Google right now is focused heavily on local businesses right now. People are searching “near me,” 34 more times than they were two years ago. This is why Local Services ads are so timely and will help your business gain more quality leads. How do you get in the top 3 spots for Local Services ads? Proximity to the searcher. Responsiveness. Reviews and what people are saying about you.

“I have spent my career being the left brain support for right brain professionals. I was the technical support, the business support, the structural support. I was building structural foundations that allow creative professionals to flourish. “So most of my career was spent with graphic designers at agencies, videographers, and photographers. In the early days when technology was first coming in, I taught people the first version of Photoshop and dealt with all the issues around that. “But it's always been from the standpoint of helping create structural foundations that allow creative professionals to lead a sustainable life. For me, my passion comes from allowing people to unlock a sustainable life around their passion.” I loved this conversation with Jed Taufer about building Sue Bryce Education and the magic of what's possible in online learning communities. This conversation was recorded at The Portrait Masters inaugural Conference in Indian Wells, California, in September 2017. Today Vicki Taufer tells about what is working now in her business. Vicki has been in the industry almost 20 years now. She focuses on artistic portraiture, located in Morton, Illinois (pumpkin capital of the world). Vicki teaches internationally and values work life balance. Work life balance constantly changes and just being aware of trying to be balanced is important. She went from 300 sessions/year, 9 employees, to Vicki being the only full time employee and being more hands on. Now Vicki goes into the client’s home and does design work, producing some of their highest sales over the past 20 years. “I’m working smarter, not harder” Vicki is hopeful about our industry as she’s getting higher sales than ever, offering full service experiences clients aren’t getting elsewhere. Doing things you can’t duplicate with snapshots on phones gives clients things they are willing to pay for. Vicki tells us about what it was like starting their business 20 years ago, and what to do and not do. She received the advice “hire slowly, fire quickly” and highly recommends following that advice. She also talks about how much more profitable in person sales are than online sales and not leaving money on the table as the client doesn’t know what their images will look like large on their walls if you don’t show them. Speaker 2: [00:05] Welcome to from nothing to profit, a photographer’s podcast with Matt and Kia where each week they talk to photographers about what is working in their business now so you can swipe those ideas and grow your business faster. Good morning everyone. Kia: [00:22] We are so excited that you are here. It may not be morning where you are, but it is where we are and we are interviewing one of my favorite people in the world today. Her name is Vicky topher and she has been involved in the photography industry for almost 20 years now. She focuses on artistic portraiture and loves to photograph people, pets and she does a lot of commercial shoots as well. She is located in Morton, Illinois right now, although she shoots all over the country and she has a passion for people. Her camera journey has taken her all over the world and if you follow her you’ll see that she’s taught internationally, traveled internationally, and her goal right now is a healthy work life balance and I bet you that that’s something that we’re going to talk quite a bit about. Matt: [01:14] Well, awesome. Welcome Vicky. So tell me a little bit more. So where do you live in Illinois is like more like central Illinois. It’s a suburb of Chicago. Vicki: [01:21] Tell me more. Yeah, yeah, we are in central Illinois and the small or smaller town that both my husband and I grew up in. You know, we’ve moved around a little bit but have ended up back here. It’s about 17,000 people a couple of hours south of Chicago, a couple of hours north of St Louis. Matt: [01:39] Awesome. Yeah, I, when I was in college, my buddy, his parents moved to decatur and so we every break we have, we would drive out to the cater like and like 16 hours on had all the way out there. It was, it was actually a lot of fun, but I probably wouldn’t move to decatur, but it was, it was a cool experience to have in common. Vicki: [01:57] Right. And that’s about an Support this podcast

Have you ever stopped to think about what makes your portrait session experience different than any other portrait studio? Is it the price? The studio itself? Sexy packaging?Digital files/no digital files? None of the above? My guest today would submit that it's not about any of these things.  Differentiating yourself from other photographers is about the managing and creating the experience of capturing a moment with the people our clients love most.In this episode, Jed Taufer, a former podcaster turned Strategic Projects guru at White House Custom Colour joins us with his wealth of experience as both a portrait studio owner (with his wife, Vicky)  and a seasoned industry expert, Jed brings a unique perspective to the table when it comes to making the client experience something really special. He also tells it like it is and is very funny (bonus). Jed will inspire you to:Consider the importance of CONFIDENCE in your process–do you have confidence? Do you have a process? The transformative power of putting the client at the center of your sales. To really THINK about what we want our clients to feel and experience during their time with us. This episode will leave you feeling inspired to make your client's experience, your products, and your business as special as you can.In this episode, you'll learn:What clients really want out of a portrait sessionThe role your level of confidence plays in the processHow to determine and focus on what you want most for your clientsHere's a glance at this episode:[2:58] - Jed shares what things have looked like for him in the past few years.[4:39] - It can be tough for a photographer to shift from shoot and burn to selling finished products.[7:19] - Confidence is a really big part of the process.[9:03] - It is a disservice not to offer your clients products through sales.[12:03] - Jed describes the experience of being on the client side of things and seeing the final products and wanting all of it.[15:24] - We undervalue what the experience can actually be. It is the experience of being with and watching people they love.[17:25] - Are you using your talents in the highest way?[19:05] - You have to know what you really want. [22:24] - There are a lot of different directions you can go down when you answer the question, “What do you want?”[25:37] - You're not going to get the time back. Work towards the things you want, not the things you don't really care about.[28:13] - Building your confidence is a layer at a time.Links and Resources: Jed TauferWebsite | InstagramDo The ReWorkWebsite | InstagramAllison Tyler JonesWebsite | Instagram | LinkedIn
