After first joining the podcast back in episode 96, Taylor Trensch returns with a Tony nomination under his belt and a powerful performance in Floyd Collins that's leaving audiences breathless. We dive into the fascinating real-life story behind the show, his emotionally raw portrayal of journalist Skeets Miller, and how a tragic event from 100 years ago still mirrors today's media culture. Taylor shares what it's like to be the emotional center of a musical, how his understanding of connection has deepened post-lockdown, and the joy (and challenge) of performing for an audience that includes a dog with pink ears in the front row. From mental health advocacy to navigating the tension between real-life presence and online identity, Taylor gets candid about the evolution of his craft and the culture around him. He even takes us on a comedic detour into the plot of Cats (kind of) and imagines a version of Into the Woods that features Titus Burgess in every role, with the Muppets rounding out the cast. Whether you're here for the insight, the artistry, or the chaos—it's all here.Taylor Trensch is a Tony-nominated actor currently starring as Skeets Miller in Floyd Collins at Lincoln Center Theater. His past Broadway credits include Dear Evan Hansen, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Hello, Dolly!, and Matilda. He's also known for his advocacy around mental health and his commitment to emotionally resonant storytelling on stage. Connor and Dylan are joined by Taylor Trensch (Dear Evan Hansen, Hello, Dolly!). The twins are bouncing off the walls with excitement to have Taylor, a dream guest, on the podcast, having been in the audience for his professional debut performance in Spring Awakening over 15 years ago. Taylor Trensch is a star, y'all! He dishes on his extraordinary career, ranging from working alongside Gavin Creel in Hello, Dolly! to his recent two-hander experience with Cynthia Nixon. And just like that… we gagged! Connor dreamcasts Taylor in the titular role in Oh, Mary, while everyone eagerly anticipates Nicole Scherzinger's arrival on Broadway. We go down memory lane to Tampa, where Taylor's love of theatre began with (spoiler alert) Nancy's tragic end in Oliver! These three gab about their favorite divas (Bernadette! Lillias! Dakin Matthews!), Taylor's onstage wigs, and working with dogs and rats in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. We gush over Cristin Milioti, dissect the Ryan Murphyverse, and giggle nonstop. Did Taylor (as Boq) perform a triple pirouette during “Dancing Through Life” in Wicked? That's one mystery we'll never know the answer to. Be sure to see this superstar in Safety Not Guaranteed as BAM through October 20.Follow Taylor on InstagramSee Safety Not Guaranteed at BAM! Mommy issues. Performance art. Fisting. This first episode has it all.  Welcome to The After Party, hosted by Michael Kushner and Eila Mell! Celebrate the mammoth effort of opening a show on Broadway. Whether you have seen the show, watched the slime tutorials, entered lotteries, or are begging for tickets for your birthday – dive into the beginning, middle, and sometimes premature end of what it means to be on Broadway straight from the people working on your favorite shows. This isn't just an ordinary interview show – we dive in deep asking hard-hitting questions. Hosts Eila Mell and Michael Kushner will take you on an educational, yet emotional and very fun journey as you learn every detail of what goes into opening, sustaining, and closing your favorite Broadway shows. This podcast features spoilers, so make sure you're ready for them if you haven't seen the show.  On our inaugural episode, we have the incomparable Emmy and Tony Award-winner Cynthia Nixon dive deep with us into the dark, humorous, and boundary pushing new play The Seven Year Disappear.  Naphtali's (Taylor Trensch) world-famous performance artist mother (Cynthia Nixon) disappeared suddenly seven years ago. And yet, he sees her everywhere: in the faces of friends, coworkers, the guy he's flirting with. When his mother returns with few answers and a major request, Naphtali is forced to confront what he's spent years trying to forget. A funny, deeply human mystery of mothers and sons, coming of age, and coming apart.  The New Group presents the world premiere production of The Seven Year Disappear by Jordan Seavey, featuring Emmy and Tony Award-winner Cynthia Nixon (The Gilded Age, And Just Like That, Little Foxes) and Taylor Trensch (Camelot; Hello, Dolly!), directed by New Group Founding Artistic Director Scott Elliott. Previews begin Tuesday, February 6 in advance of an Official Opening Night on Monday, February 26. A limited Off-Broadway engagement is slated through Sunday, March 24 at The Pershing Square Signature Center (The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre, 480 West 42nd Street).  Learn more about your ad choices. Taylor Trensch has been a familiar face on Broadway since 2012, when he made his Broadway debut in Wicked as Boq. He originated roles in the Broadway debut productions of Matilda The Musical, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night-Time. Some of his more recent roles include Barnaby Tucker in the revival of Hello Dolly!, the title role in Dear Evan Hansen, and starring next to Ed Harris as Dill Harris in To Kill A Mockingbird. Taylor can currently be heard as Sweet William in Bleeding Love, a brand new original musical podcast radio play on The Broadway Podcast Network. Taylor has been spending his time in quarantine in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, but was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. He shares that he grew up in the same house his dad grew up in - had the same childhood bedroom, as well as the same seat at the family dinner table. When Taylor was 5 years old he performed in his first community theater show - The Wizard of Oz. He loved the movie as a child and begged his parents to take him to the audition. He says he peed his pants opening night, and “from then on I couldn’t be stopped.” Growing up, Taylor had severe allergies and asthma, which deterred him from spending a lot of time outside. When he discovered theater, the immediacy of a group of people being in a room together, getting laughs and applause, he was hooked. He shares that by the time he was in middle school, he knew he was gay. And by doing community theater, he started to become aware of the gay and queer adults who were also there, and began to see himself in them.  Playing Sweet William in Bleeding Love is a bit of a throwback for him, as Taylor took part in the original demo recordings that took place in 2016. But the main difference, due to the current coronavirus pandemic, is that no one in the cast can actually be together. Taylor records his songs, and one off lines from the bathroom in his apartment. He describes what a unique challenge it is, calling it “bizarre to try to make a specific, honest choice” as an actor, with sort of no context or ability to play off his fellow actors. There is inherent energy between cast members when they are performing together, they fuel one another. Taylor shares that part of this experience is creating that energy for yourself. Bleeding Love is a show about being in quarantine, but it was written years prior to our current pandemic. And it seems it was rediscovered at precisely the right time.  In this episode, we talk about:  His failed attempt to escape NYC during quarantine  The personal catharsis he experienced while playing the lead in Dear Evan Hansen  The two versions of self he believes are inside every theater artist Grounding himself in his life, while having Ben Platt on speed-dial and being buddies with Ed Harris  Performing with his boyfriend in Dear Evan Hansen  The end of the recent CATS film  His idea of what the theater may look like when quarantine is over Connect with Taylor: IG @knucklesandwich Listen to Bleeding Love Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. TAYLOR TRENSCH has been making a name for himself on the New York stage. From the off-Broadway revival of Rent to Broadway credits in Wicked, Matilda and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, the young talent has certainly been keeping busy. A few months after opening the Tony-winning revival of Hello, Dolly! alongside Bette Midler, Gavin Creel, Kate Baldwin and more in April of 2017, it was announced that he would be stepping into the year’s other Tony-winning smash: Dear Evan Hansen. Now, Trensch is singing and sobbing eight times a week in the emotional role that earned Ben Platt his first Tony. Get to know the young talent on Show People with Paul Wontorek.
