Together, they take a deep dive into crate digging, both in the literal sense of flicking through dusty vinyl sleeves and in the modern-day algorithm-fueled digital rabbit hole of obscure musical discoveries.

Marquee Moon, the debut album by Television, released in 1977, is widely regarded as a cornerstone of punk rock and post-punk. With its angular, intricate guitar work and poetic lyrics, the album broke away from the fast-and-furious energy of typical punk, offering a more artful and complex sound. The title track, "Marquee Moon," with its extended guitar solos, became a defining moment in rock history. The band's interplay of guitars, especially between Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd, along with Verlaine's distinct vocal delivery, made Marquee Moon a critically acclaimed work that continues to influence musicians across genres.Listen to the album Apple Music Listen to the album on Spotify What did you think of this album? TELEVISION – MARQUEE MOON with special guest Will Sergeant. This interview took place before and after we listened to the vinyl album. 'Marquee Moon' is a revolutionary album, but it's a subtle, understated revolution. Without question, it is a guitar rock album – it's astonishing to hear the interplay between Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd, but it is a guitar rock album unlike any other. Where their predecessors in the New York punk scene, most notably the Velvet Underground, had fused blues structures with avant-garde flourishes, Television completely strip away any sense of swing or groove, even when they are playing standard three-chord changes. Marquee Moon is comprised entirely of tense garage rockers that spiral into heady intellectual territory, which is achieved through the group's long, interweaving instrumental sections, not through Verlaine's words. That alone made Marquee Moon a trailblazing album – it's impossible to imagine post-punk soundscapes without it. Of course, it wouldn't have had such an impact if Verlaine hadn't written an excellent set of songs that conveyed a fractured urban mythology unlike any of his contemporaries. From the nervy opener, "See No Evil," to the majestic title track, there is simply not a bad song on the entire record. And what has kept 'Marquee Moon' fresh over the years is how Television flesh out Verlaine's poetry into sweeping sonic epics. Stephen Thomas Erlewine.  With special guest WILL SERGEANTWill is best known for his work as songwriter and guitarist with Echo & The Bunnymen with whom he has recorded and performed world-wide for thirty years. He also has long-term ties with the experimental side of life, in the fields of performance, recording and the visual arts. Here he talks about his life as a Bunnyman and more besides before waxing lyrical about his favourite album – Television's ‘Marquee Moon.' Ryan Walker was in the interviewer's chair. This event took place on 14th December 2023 in the Pigeon Loft at The Robin Hood, Pontefract, West Yorkshire. Never Mind the Bullocks, Rocket to Russia, Animals, Low, My Aim is True, Heroes, Rumours and yes, Aja all came out in 1977 and Television's Marquee Moon might be the best of all of them.  It's punk but atmospheric, arty but accessible, full of attitude but emotional, catchy but virtuosic.  It's the masterpiece that hides in the shadows, sneaks up on you and then stays with you for the rest of your life.  We find a variety of ways to express this sentiment over and over again for an hour and half.  Enjoy!     RIP Tom Verlaine  RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening    Omertà 68  Zero Days Without Incident https://open.spotify.com/album/6jtAeF8OGvPnDcOtdBc1Zc?si=LhRq8f1HQ8WumIHu4wLqpQ   Sunn O)))  Metta Benevolence BBC6 Music https://open.spotify.com/album/5Y8LeGLMZnHXicnAwmMr3j?si=kWxajMlFT4CLjNESK2OMmQ Altar https://open.spotify.com/album/0v2IQBEPQqlKFiAa5rj1AC?si=SkkiFjTfQiaY8hF4pU6Fig   Bernard Purdie Purdie Good https://open.spotify.com/album/2A3zUHI72wEKSxMTJBsuh2?si=S1RpS2xLQvGsYGDxIlcXFA   The Best of Mod Jazz https://open.spotify.com/album/51NkEaKdNj3m2ncmFXW7wY?si=mLF4gegbR9q5k9GmIpEYNg   The Greg Kihn Band  “The Breakup Song” https://open.spotify.com/track/3gHyNUxOEZq4VltRl2xUW4?si=3586a1ed7dd044a3   huntsmanhill.com huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   HHPP Amazon Affiliates Store https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/06/09/hhpp-store/   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRw Academy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c   Omertà 68:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/6dfiCa0qTlbPQUrqtIkStS?si=6SCjNtXbSO2xRBDuBKJelQ

On this week's podcast, we have another “Listener's Choice,” the 1977 debut by Television - Marquee Moon.  Recorded in the fall of 1976 and released in February of 1977, Marquee Moon was a critical darling and a minor hit in the UK. Music fans in the US outside of New York were indifferent. Which is unfortunate because Marquee Moon is an album worthy of attention.  Over the melodic yet solid rhythm section of drummer Billy Ficca and bassist Fred Smith, duel lead guitarists Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd bring their own distinctive styles to the band's music, and create something unlike anything coming out of New York or anywhere else at the time.  Add Verlaine's quirky vocal whine, and you have one of the most incredibly innovative and unique albums ever recorded, and one that influenced the music of late 20th century well beyond the limits of its commercial success. Sadly, Tom Verlaine passed away on January 28, 2023. He was 73 years old.

Freehand guitarist Matt Sweeney (heard in the Red Dead Redemption 2 soundtrack, Skunk, Chavez, and more) guests on this episode of CrossFade! He picked “John, the Wolf King of L.A.,” the first solo record from The Mamas & The Papas founder John Phillips, because of its hauntingly beautiful arrangements and its dark underbelly. The discussion focuses on how such sunny-sounding music can hide such sinister stories, and what that says about the man who embodied it all. Host Matt Helgeson chose “Marquee Moon,” the debut album of American rock band Television – a true guitarist’s record and a through-and-through groundbreaking rock album that would help shape punk, pop, and art rock through the late 1970s and ‘80s. It opened both Helgeson and Sweeney’s eyes to the depths that rock riffs can plumb – there’s stuff on this record that even they can’t figure out to this day. CBGB...Late 1970s...The birthplace of punk rock in New York City. Television was all up in it...at the ground floor. Join us as we dive into their debut full-length album "Marquee Moon" from 1977. Alongside Blondie and The Ramones, Television was lumped into the punk rock category, and for good reason...but their jazz-improve guitar stylings and sporadic vocals placed them on the other side of that punk rock coin.

Bill and Brian welcome journalist/Jersey music expert Jim Testa () to talk about Television's Marquee Moon (1977, Elektra). Emerging out of the CBGB "punk" scene, Television struggled to find mainstream success with their quirky rock and only put out two albums before calling it quits (a third followed in the 90s after they reformed). Despite this, the band has gone on to be critically well regarded and highly influential. Jim Testa, who has been writing about music since before the release of this album, tells us about the early days at CBGB and discovering this music as it was released. Bill, Brian, and Jim discuss the Ramones, what the heck post-punk is, how Television is completely unique, what Robert Christgau had to say about the album, the quality of Tom Verlaine's voice, the strange rhythms in the songs, a little on what Brian thinks sounds "angular," what cinematic sounds like, Suicide (the band), and much more as we make our way through the album track by track!

If you are sitting at a bar after recording a podcast, and you are trying to explain to someone what your podcast is about, Television quickly becomes a “who’s on first”. It’s really hard to tell someone what you are doing a podcast about when you say Television and you immediately have to say “the band” Television…which is weird cause nobody EVER says “television” when referencing a television, they say “T.V…" I’m pretty sure in 1977 that folks were also saying T.V. and that makes Television (the band)’s choice to name the band Television both punk-rock and anachronistic (probably what they were aiming for)… Anyway, I wish I smoked weed cause that way I could explain that last paragraph away… So…Kevin last minute had to fly away to some other land, and Ryan and I held it together this time…With the help of Producer Mark we, by the grace of god, did it. Get "Marquee Moon" yonder there Amazon Coming Up Next time on somebody likes it: UGH UGH UGH UGH UGH UGH…bad bad bad nightmare bad…it’s called “Steely Dan”…I can’t even write “somebody likes it” in caps, cause it still hurts me…it…hurts. It…hurts…like the slow spread into your belly after getting kicked in the huevos (that means eggs in espanol, eggs meaning testes)…NEXT STOP: AWFUL TOWN.
