What is Indexed Universal Life Insurance? Is it something you should consider investing in? Are the rumors you've heard about it true? In this episode, Andy Panko (of Tenon Financial) and I dispel 7 myths that are circulating about UILs and we cover what you need to know to make an informed decision about the insurance product. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... What is Indexed Universal Life Insurance? [1:46] Myth #1: It's a secret the wealthy don't want you to know about [4:30] Myth #2: The IUL cost is lower than a well-managed mutual fund [7:34] Myth #3: IULs can give you a tax-free retirement [10:18] Myth #4: An IUL means you can be your own bank [12:20] Myth #5: Life insurance is a tier-one asset for the banks [16:04] Myth #6: IULs are better than 401k plans [19:31] Myth #7: IULs are a “can't lose” monetary asset [23:59] Should you consider investing in an IUL? [28:24] What is Indexed Universal Life Insurance? Indexed Universal Life Insurance is often pitched and marketed as a retirement income tool under a host of other names. It's a complicated product, often sold via misleading information. At its core, It's a life insurance policy with a death benefit that can build cash value within the policy. You can take loans against it and money out of it. Some of the benefits can be used toward long-term care expenses. It can be a useful and multi-purpose product. However, misleading claims are often made about these policies during the sales process. Myth: The IUL cost is lower than a well-managed mutual fund An IUL is a multi-decade-long product. It's a lifetime commitment. The up-front fees are large. It can be more than 10% the first year and 6–8% beyond that. By the time you get to the 10th year, the fees can be lower (under 5.5%). I bought an IUL and the up-front costs were 17% for the first year. When you blend it out over the life of the product, it will not be as low as a managed index fund. It's not reasonable to expect. And you're not actually invested in index funds—you get exposure through the insurance company buying options on the underlying index. Myth: An IUL means you can be your own bank You aren't borrowing money from a bank. And the money in the policy continues to earn interest. You can borrow against the IUL and use the money however you'd like. But it's no different than if you took a home equity line of credit against your house. You still own the house and it's full price appreciation but you have a loan collateralized by your house. People will say that Walt Disney founded Disney because he borrowed against his whole life insurance policy. People insinuate that Disneyland wouldn't exist without an IUL. All said and done, he took a $50,000 loan against his life insurance policy but it was only 0.66% of the total capital required to launch Disneyland. Life insurance wasn't the missing link. Myth: IULs are a “can't lose” monetary asset The cash value of your account earns interest and it will never be lower than zero. However, you can't own that cash value in isolation. There are annual fees associated with the policy. Even in the years where you get 0%, you have fees and costs that will cause your cash value to decline. That is still losing money. Most of them also have a commitment period. If you want to walk away with your money, you'll likely get charged a hefty fee to do so. If you hold the product for the rest of your life, you will in time have more cash value than you put in. But in the early years, you will have less money than you put in. Insurance products are designed to be long-term. The people who sell these products are paid on commission. So surrender penalties reimburse the insurance company if the policyholder bails out early. Should you consider investing in an IUL? Listen to hear what Andy factors into the decision-making process. In this episode, The Annuity Man and Andy Panko discuss: How advisors should construct their fees The complexity of decumulation Making the plan as good as it can be Cryptocurrency is a lottery ticket Key Takeaways: The work isn't linear to the asset size; advisors shouldn't make more money just because assets go up. In the same way, advisors shouldn't be paid less just because the markets go down. They're still doing the same amount of work and providing the same services. Investment management, even good investment management, has become increasingly cheap, easy, and commoditized to do and do well. Decumulation is much more complex. Clean off excess dirt with a damp towel or give mushrooms a quick rinse and dry. Cut bigger mushrooms into similar-sized pieces. Don't cut them thin as they will shrink up while cooking. Meaty thick pieces cook best! Give Them Some Room: Don't overcrowd your sauté pan, you need plenty of room for a good sear. High Heat: Turn the heat up to medium-high and allow time for your oil/butter to get hot before adding the mushrooms. Look for the shimmer of the oil. Keeping the heat up will help moisture evaporate quickly giving you a beautifully caramelized mushroom. If mushrooms are giving off lots of moisture keep the heat going until it's gone. Over washing will contribute to the added moisture. The term “sauté” means high heat …little oil. Let's Do This : Clean and slice mushrooms into similar size pieces. Don't cut them too thin, as they will shrink while cooking. Heat oil and butter in a medium to large pan over medium-high heat. Look for the oil to shimmer before adding the mushrooms. Add mushrooms and toss in the oil quickly. Cook mushroom for 3-5 minutes. Stir and allow mushrooms to finish cooking for a couple more minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Large mushrooms can take a little extra time. Deglaze and Season: After a good sauté you'll notice some bits of the mushroom clinging to the bottom of your pan. There's a whole lot of flavor there that can be infused back in by a simple deglaze. To capture the flavor add a splash of liquid at the end of the cooking process and stir it all up. Simply, add a few tablespoons of water, wine, stock, cream, or sherry to the pan after the mushrooms are done cooking. Keep the temperature up and stir until the liquid evaporates. For Added Flavor: Use garlic and herbs. Turn heat down to medium-low and add last minute of cooking. Wonderful herbs to try are thyme, parsley, and rosemary. Fresh lemon and or lime To Make Ahead: Mushrooms can be sauteed ahead of time and stored covered in the fridge for 3-4 day. Reheat in a skillet until warm. To Freeze: Freezing may change the texture of sauteed mushrooms. After cooking, freeze mushrooms flat on a cookie sheet. Once completely frozen transfer to a freezer-safe container. Thaw and reheat in a pan over medium heat. Deglaze: Add a few tablespoons of water, wine, stock, cream, or sherry to the pan after the mushrooms are done cooking. Keep the temperature up and stir until the liquid evaporates.

Sisters and business partners, Marti Lieberman and Pamela Lorden, own and operate The Mac Mart in Philadelphia. Although the venture began without any former training or background in the business, Marti started The Mac Mart to create a job for herself after graduating college, and was soon joined by her sister. The inspiration? A decadent mac-n-cheese that she made for her own graduation party was a huge hit, and food trucks were an up-and-coming trend at the time. Years later, the business has grown into multiple cart locations and a brick and mortar spot in center city...with a lot of happy mac and cheese lovers enjoying every cheesy bite!We then climbed aboard the Moshulu off of Delaware Avenue in Philadelphia, speaking with the General Manager, Michelle Delp. Michelle knows all the in's and out's of the Moshulu, having worked there for 16 years, so when it comes to knowing the history and stories behind the Old cargo vessel she's certainly the perfect guide! After taking an optional champagne-toasted tour, you can enjoy some of the menu options like a raw bar, plentiful seafood options, along with steak, chicken, and more! And if you're looking to celebrate an event or holiday gathering--the Moshulu is the place to be! With sweeping back-drops of the Delaware River and Ben Franklin Bridge, you can taste your way through the night. And be sure to check out at least one of the five bars for you favorite cocktail or mocktail. Whether you're there to celebrate an event, enjoy a lovely dinner out, or grabbing brunch with friends, the Moshulu is a great place to experience in Philadelphia! And we'll leave you with an indulgent treat, as we speak with co-owners Timothy Roquemore and Andre March of Afrika Bar. Creating something nice while doing good certainly hits the sweet-spot for anyone, and Timothy and Andre are doing just that. Both owners have worked within the fashion industry, so they're connoisseurs of what looks and tastes high-end. So the pair ventured to create an indulgent chocolate that will play off your palate with a variety of tasting notes, all sourced from small farms in Africa. Through their company's sales of both chocolate and branded fashion, they are able to give back to those farms to help support fair wages and sustainability practices. So if you are searching for a chocolate to enlighten your senses while doing good, try some of the chocolate from AfrikaBar.com!

Fellow financial advisor Andy Panko, CFP®, RICP®, EA joins Evon on the podcast to dive into the ins and outs of Indexed Universal Life (IUL) Insurance. In a recent explosion of marketing and sales on the internet, this highly complex insurance product is often touted as "THE" product you should own above all others.Andy and Evon provide an objective review of this type of life insurance, diving into how the product works, how it's different from other types of life insurance, ways that the policy may not go as expected, downsides and considerations, as well as when it makes sense to own such a policy. Lastly, we do a bit of "fact or fiction" on common marketing lines used to sell these products. Hopefully this episode helps optometrists make more educated decisions around what can be a complicated insurance product.Have questions on anything discussed or want to have topics or questions featured on the show? Andy's Bio:While studying toward a finance degree at the University of Delaware, I decided to work toward a career helping others with their finances. I didn't quite know what that job would look like, but I figured it must exist. I assumed it would involve helping and educatingIn my senior year at Delaware, I interviewed at a few of the large household name financial services companies for roles they called "financial advisor." I assumed those would be the sort of financial planning careers I was thinking of. Unfortunately, I quickly realized those jobs were not about giving financial advice or guidance. Instead, they were just commissioned sales positions to sell the companies' products - life insurance, annuities and mutual funds. I was completely turned off by that and gave up on trying to find a financial planning job. I ended up getting a corporate job at a large insurance companyAfter graduating college in 2000, I spent the next 19 years working for multiple global insurance, banking and brokerage firms. I worked in functions that involved the creation, risk management, trading, portfolio management and financing of many of the insurance and investment products and strategies used throughout the financial services industry. My roles included pension risk management, investment management, securities financing and investment fund analysis and diligenceAlong the way I went back to school - in 2004 I earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Rutgers Business School. I've also taught multiple semesters as an adjunct lecturer for the finance department of Rutgers Business SchoolIn 2016, I had an experience that reignited my desire to do personal financial planning. My mother was transitioning into retirement and was trying to figure out how best to claim her Social Security benefits. After getting different answers from different people - including different answers from within the Social Security Administration itself - I dug in and helped her research the relevant laws and regulations. We ultimately got to the correct answer and she was able to make the best claiming decision for her and her circumstancesAt that point, the proverbial light went off for me - helping people make decisions about their retirement finances was what I was supposed to be doing with my life. Since that point in 2016, I committed myself to getting educated on all things related to financial planning for retirement. In that journey, I obtained the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ ("CFP®") designation, the Retirement Income Certified Professional® ("RICP®") designation and the IRS Enrolled Agent ("EA") licenseIn 2019, I left the institutional investment and banking world to launch Tenon Financial. I also started a separate tax return preparation and filing company, Tenon Tax Preparation. And I remain committed to sharing knowledge and helping educate others- AndyAndy's Social:Twitter: @TenonFinancialLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andypanko/

You should be able to fit them onto two large cookie sheets. Panko plain bread crumbs, 8-ounce container Liquid from 1 can of low sodium chick peas Ground flax seed meal Red pepper flakes, basil, oregano, garlic powder Pasta sauce (see recipe), remove from freezer the night before Homemade Bread (or a healthy one that you can buy) - see recipe Directions Peel eggplant, and cut lengthwise into ½ to ⅝ inch thick slices. Microwave the slices for 5 minutes on high on each side to remove water. Use hand towels to help absorb moisture. This will take a while. This avoids the salt method in most eggplant recipes. Once completed, pour contents of liquid from can of chickpeas, along with some ground flaxseed meal, and some water (1 to 1 ½ ounces) into a bowl with a flat bottom and stir. In another bowl, pour about half of the container of bread crumbs in, and add red pepper flakes (¾ teaspoon tops), oregano, basil, and garlic powder, and stir to mix in. Bathe the eggplant slices in the liquids, then transfer to the bread crumb mix, making sure to cover both sides of the eggplant slices. At the halfway point of this process, the liquid used to bind the bread crumbs to the eggplant will overtake the bread crumb bowl. You'll need to discard it, and add the other half of the bread crumbs, along with the spices to coat the remaining eggplant. Place on to the baking sheet, and cook in the oven that has been preheated to 400 degrees for 20 minutes, convection setting if you have it. At that point remove from the oven, turn, and replace back into the oven, switching the sheets from top to bottom, and vice versa. Cook 20 more minutes. It is possible they may need to stay in a little longer to get them crispy. You can eyeball this. Better a little over cooked than under cooked. Toast bread, and heat pasta sauce. Serve with pickle and chips. Can be eaten as an “Eggplant Sammy”, or with a knife and fork.

Today we welcome XYPN member Andy Panko, CFP®, RICP®, EA, founder of Tenon Financial, to XYPN Radio. Andy always knew he wanted to be a financial advisor—but the harsh reality of financial planning opportunities (or the lack of them) for a fresh college graduate was discouraging. So, Andy spent the first 19 years of his career working in insurance, banking, and brokerage firms. It was in 2016 that Andy discovered XYPN Radio and realized that his dream of helping others with their finances could be a reality. Andy spent the next three years preparing to launch—and that preparation really paid off. COVID soon followed Teton Financial's 2019 launch. Rather than seeing this as a roadblock, Andy took it as a sign to double down on his marketing efforts, and it paid off handsomely. He got his first client in June 2020 and quickly reached capacity at the beginning of 2022. Andy is truly passionate and candidly talks with us about his growth and how he has worked to intentionally build a high-efficiency solo practice. If you're interested in working with clients to and through retirement and building a great firm in the process, this is the episode for you. Sometimes knowing what you don't want, and having the experience to understand that, can help you create a clear vision of what you do want. Advisors should have a niche or specialized focus with their practice, but what if you could focus on what you're truly passionate about? In this episode, Andy Panko from Tenon Financial joins the show to share how it's possible to do things on your own terms and grow a practice without having to focus on selling. Listen in as Andy shares how he became an advisor that people saw as a trusted and knowledgeable expert by creating a Facebook group and focusing on sharing his knowledge and expertise. He'll also share how tax planning has provided his clients with value and why it's important to educate yourself and others. https://bit.ly/3g2sjyt
We usually have a good idea of where our interviews will head. However, sometimes we discover a more interesting story the longer we talk. That happened today. We thought we would we would be discussing advisory fee structures. Instead, we learned how Andy Panko, owner and financial planner at Tenon Financial built a half million dollar a year practice starting with a private Facebook group in 2019 and a strong commitment to fair pricing. Take good notes! Links mentioned: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andypanko/ https://tenonfinancial.com/
Andy Panko is the owner of Tenon Financial, a virtual independent RIA that oversees $70 million in assets under management for 43 retired client households. Andy was able to reach his client capacity goal in only two short years by leveraging a Facebook group that he created to share his expertise directly with the types of clients that he wanted to serve. Listen in as Andy shares how he was able to leverage his Taxes in Retirement Facebook Group to grow his firm, how he inadvertently created a virtual firm through the process, and why he first structured his firm with a flat-fee model to clearly project his revenue potential. We also discuss how he was able to build his initial list of members to his Facebook group, why he created a list of advisors that have similar focuses to refer prospects to, and why he chose not to take on any more clients—even though his Facebook group is still gaining momentum.
